I wanted to eat here to see and be in a space designed by Julia Morgan. The building was fantastic. The food -- we had a steak and athen salmon were very good. Both cooked perfectly, but not over the top memorable. I would go back but I would not run back.

We knew it would be good, because two friends recommended it based on separate dining experiences. Even with high expectations coming in, they managed to impress. The service was fantastic. For example, our desire for four plates served one at a time as four courses was not only met with a smile, but they plated each up separately without us asking. We had a wine that was amazing, and not expensive. All four plates were fantastic. Well done!

The Berkeley Club is a beautiful historical hotel. Our table was next to an open window in the dining room, which we appreciated because it was hot outside but pleasant inside. Dinner was prompt and service was excellent-friendly staff. My friend's tuna was over cooked and she expressed to the waitress that she preferred her tuna more rare. The waitress removed plate and returned later with tuna, cooked rare-excellent. I had the Risotto, which was also very good. Warm bread was brought to table before dinner was served, which we enjoyed with our wine. Service was great and we had a very pleasant evening there.

We were totally surprised by this restaurant. I was looking for a restaurant close by Zellarbach Hall at UC Berkeley. It's an old building but the ambiance was superb. The ladies had chicken and the men had lamb chops. Both were delicious. Definitely a place that we will visit in the future simply for the food. Executive Chef Alaun Grimard definitely deserves five stars.

We were recommended Julia's the night before and wondered why we have never gone. Friends claimed it was one of the great dining spots of the bay area. My son was in town and he said he'd like to go to CPC for his birthday dinner... called, couldn't get in till 10pm. Hey, what about Julia's? What a grand surprise! Exciting to enjoy totally refined french cuisine. All the dishes we ordered from fish, steak, to vegetarian were a delight to the palette. We had just returned from France, dining in Paris and Burgundy and this was just as grand....at a fraction of the price. Go! Eat! Enjoy the Berkeley City Club and the elegant food and service.

  • FIX THE CHAIRS - PLEASE!?

In “hindsight”, celebrating our anniversary, we had a wonderful experience with the exception of uncomfortable chairs! Our server–Jessica answered our myriad of questions with aplomb. She even had Chef Grimaud offer his recipe for the romesco sauce served with the squid appetizer. Our dishes included pungent beet salad, entrees of chicken prepared 2 ways and roasted lamb rack with its savory chimichurri sauce. My only negative was the accompanying eggplant and julienne “okay-flavored” red bell peppers were overdone for my taste. For dessert a shared dee-lish piping hot berry cobbler with a refreshing scoop of corn ice cream. The Chef was very kind to comp our dessert! Possibly because of our intended plan to FIX THE CHAIRS crusade? Enjoy!

I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday lunch on the terrace at Julia's recently. The Julia Morgan Berkeley City Club is an historic architectural gem, and Julia's location within such a beautiful building was a real highlight of the restaurant experience. The menu choices were inviting and seasonal, and the food was delicious with fresh ingredients and local sourcing. The waitstaff and service could not have been better - appropriate attention without being cloying or hovering, but with real concern about our comfort and enjoyment of our meal. It was very civilized to be able to talk without shouting over the din of noise found in many restaurants today! I would definitely return to enjoy the special atmosphere of Julia's again.

We went to Julia's for our first wedding anniversary and they knew exactly how to make it special for us! We were served complimentary champagne immediately upon being seated. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and also knew how to avoid being intrusive. The food was very good, although the menu is limited for vegetarians and for those who avoid seafood. At the end of our meal, the server brought out homemade corn ice cream for us with a candle and offered to take a picture. We had a wonderful time and we loved the atmosphere. We definitely would go back for future events. The building is also very unique and fun to walk around in.

Julia's in the Berkeley City Club, named for the renowned California architect Julia Morgan who designed the club and over 700 other unique buildings, has transformed itself into a high-cuisine restaurant. The chef comes from a Spanish family that has been dedicated to fine food for generations. He has trained the kitchen staff and the wait staff to an impressive professional standard. The dining room, like the rest of the club, is far beyond charming. Every detail, including its decorations, was specified by Ms. Morgan, who often took long trips to Europe to find each elegant item. No other restaurant in the Bay Area can, in my opinion, offer Julia's integration of refined food, service and ambiance.

After many years of mediocre food at the Berkeley City Club, Julia's is now one of the excellent restaurants in Berkeley. The atmosphere was always great but even that has been tweaked by the management. Hidden on the second floor of this lovely Julia Morgan building, Julia's shines like a beacon near the campus. It perfect for dinner before one of the numerous cultural events in Berkeley. Before a play or a concert, you will dine elegantly. The food is seasonal, fresh and delicious.

Julia's presents top quality cuisine in a beautiful and relaxing setting. It feels like the old world, but the food is anything but tired! We had superb salads, the butter lettuce and the heirloom tomatoes--every ingredient excellent in both. The king salmon entree was cooked perfectly, absolutely fresh, and served over a fresh corn base that enhanced the salmon filet. Two fruit desserts were amazing. It was quiet on a Thursday night (which we very much appreciate), but it might get noisy when full due to the tile floors and high ceilings.

My husband had the Roasted Chicken, which was perfectly seasoned with roasted vegetables. We were all delghted with our food and the service is very good also. The building by Julia Moegan is a site to see. So much attention to detail. Reminded us if Hearst Castle which she alsk designed. This is a must go, eat and see. You will not be disappointed.
