  • "All around a hidden treasure. What a great setting for a quiet lunch. Food was well presented and flavorful. Staff gets an A+."

  • "What's not to like in this glorious building and dining room designed by Julia Morgan - you can even pretend your a guest at San Simeon if you're into that sort of thing. (Julia Morgan was working on San Simeon at the same time she was designed and overseeing the construction of the City Club)"

  • "Special evening with excellent service. Like eating in Hearst Castle! Very tasty food."

  • "A little on the pricy side but quality of food and service are not to disappoint. The beet and goat cheese appetizer was really flavorful, as well as the pea & mushroom risotto with mint in it, that was interesting! and deserts: rhubarb strawberry 'empanadas' with crème fraîche ice cream, yummy! I have to say that I wouldn't call the main dish I had a risotto, not sticky enough! But it was still delicious! Accompanying cocktail and wine made for a great evening followed by the play at Indra's theatre right downstairs in the Berkeley City Club. When will a combo dinner+theatre ticket be available?"

  • "the unique setting in the magnificent Berkeley City Club sets this restaurant apart. The tables are well spaced and beautifully set with fresh flowers. There is always a huge decorative bouquet in the center of the room. The menu is always seasonal and features a nice variety of offerings. The food is carefully prepared and well presented. It is a gourmet dining experience. Wine list is good, with plenty of well priced items. My one complaint is that service tends to be slow if one is trying to finish in time for a concert or theater. A shame, because the desserts are fantastic and last time I was there, there wasn't time to get dessert and be at the concert on time."

  • "Set in the beautiful City Club its a wonderful experience, especially if you have no other occasion to attend events there. The dining room is gorgeous with spectacular wooden beams, concrete arches, and leaded windows. It feels like going out to dinner in an earlier age. After dinner be sure to explore the magnificent rooms and library and certainly don't miss what must be the most beautiful indoor pool north of san simeon. The food is solid if not spectacular and it fits in perfectly with the surroundings. A really nice dinning experience in berkeley."

  • "We were a party of four out for pre-theater dinner. We liked the ambience, we thought the food from appetizers to dessert was very good, nicely presented without being overly fussy, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. In short, we will probably be regulars."

  • "I looked for a restaurant that would be close to Zellerbach and found Julia's. I am a foodie from the get go and was more than pleasantly surprised at the service and food. The salad was dressed perfectly - always looking forward to another bite...And the flat Iron Steak was beyond my expectation. The presentation was beautiful and playful and the steak was both seasoned and cooked to perfection. I am frequently disappointed at how it shows up when I ask for rare - Not here! My waiter (Stephani) was pleasant and attentive. I was there early so I really don't know about the noise level when the dining room is full. ....the place has the feel of an old time women's tea room.....quite a delightful place! I look forward to returning!"

  • "we seem to come back for special intimate lunch or brunch events. We enjoy a table for four as its easy to have conversations while enjoying the fresh and carefully prepared foods - without any feeling of being rushed. The ability to take in the history of the building by being able to walk about before or after the meal adds a special touch."

  • "Such a great building! We thought about having our wedding here a while back, but at the time the food didn't have a great reputation. But now, the food is fabulous, to judge by our recent dinner. Entree was best I've had in a long time; appetizer and dessert were excellent. A very special place. If I was getting married this year, I would seriously consider the Berkeley City Club. And I definitely plan to return to the restaurant for more delicious food. It is too bad that the entrance is so unwelcoming at street level, with no indication of a restaurant, but an ugly intercom button and forbidding looking hidden reception area until you turn the corner after entering."

  • "In a town that is filled with incredible restaurants and tough food critics, Julia's is a gem. The ambience is incredible, you are surrounded by Julia Morgans beautiful designs, which were very elegant, but comfortable as well, The service was old school and very professional and they went out of their way to make my birthday dinner one to remember. The food was premier, all the dishes we ordered were delectable. My 13 year old daughter enjoyed it too, especially the fabulous "pom-frites"! The only thing I could say that was negative at all is that it was a bit chilly in the lofty dining room. I would recommend Julia's to anyone for any occasion or just for a wonderful dinner."

  • "Our overall experience for the 4 of us was excellent. The dining room and the interior of the whole building are strikingly beautiful, thanks to Julia Morgan. Most of the food, appetizers-entrees, desserts, coffee - was extremely good, and all was very attractively served. One salad and one entree (duck breast) was to my taste extremely salty, everything else seemed close to flawless. Service was excellent and attentive, once an apparent confusion that left our table ignored for the first 10+ minutes had been resolved by the waitstaff. All in all, a very enjoyable experience for a special occasion."

  • "This was a lovely surprise. We had read about the restaurant and the chef and decided to give it a try. First, when making the Rs over the phone, the woman was extremely nice. When we got there, the woman turned out to be the manager. Ryoko was gracious and made us feel comfortable and welcome. The food was very good, in all aspects. My wife had the duck and I had the pork chop, both were excellent. Nothing overdone, just tastefully prepared, plentiful and delicious. Our guests had the swordfish and chicken, which both said were also delicious. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, no complaints. My only complaint was that their espresso machine was down. Regular coffee was quite good, though."

  • "Nice quite resuturant. Steak was excellent swordfish just so so. The accompanying beans were way too salty. Generally this restaurant is veru skimpy on the accompanying veggies and carbs. Good service and main courses about $26 each well priced. Very limited menu."

  • "Excellent cooking and service for our large group of 8. Good portion size. Only complaint is the chairs. Too shallow for comfortable sitting but they are authentic to the building which is historic."

  • "We visited Julia's restaurant for the first time recently. The room is lovely, but unfortunately the food is really mediocre. And because of the high ceilings, the noise level is very high, even though the room was half empty when we were there. Every sound echoes. The one redeeming thing was our attentive waitress, though it took at least 15 minutes before anyone approached our table."

  • "We dine here before sporting events at Cal--it is a lovely, quiet setting to start an evening. The food is very good. We especially liked the beet salad, sea bass, rack of lamb and kumquat cake with ice cream. There is a good selection of reasonably priced wines."

  • "Julia Morgan's intricate designs contribute both to the beauty and function of the restaurant! The service was OTT!"

  • "Wow! Four foodies came to dinner and were were smitten by the chef's work. We went on a slow Wednesday night recently and at first were somewhat disappointed by a smallish menu. Then the magic started...we ordered a broad selection of dishes - salads, pastas, mains and desserts and relished every bite. We were started off with an amuse bouche appetizer(compted) which was stunning as well.. It's an adventure to get to the restaurant - beware of tough parking especially with any UC Berkeley events going on at the same time - we parked in the garage on Durant. The front door to the historic Berkeley City Club is barely marked, and locked. You get buzzed in like visiting Oz, and then the restaurant is on 2nd floor."

  • "The experience at Julias will be remember for a long time. The ambiance in this historic Julia Morgan designed building is exquisite. It is elegant and serene. The he attentive service from Tony, assisted by Hunter, was absolutely top-notch; friendly but professional, with all questions answered and all dining needs met. Food and wine recommendations were spot on. From the five main courses, we chose the grilled pork chop with organic polenta and brussel sprouts, and the crispy chicken breast with creamy grits. Both were delicious, as were the sides of roasted organic beets and celery root soup. Other entrees included rack of lamb, petrale sole, and bavette steak. There is a very nice wine list and a full bar. Prices are reasonable."

  • "Fair inexperienced hostess and waiter...altho pleasant. We only had lunch, but it was delicious. The parking is nonexistent...they have a lot....for members only. Street parking is not available with so many residents and so much construction. There is paid parking across the street for $9.00. I would suggest going once to see the Julia Morgan Bldg."

  • "We truly enjoyed our first dinner at Julia's. The food and service were very good, and being in a beautiful historical building added to our overall pleasant experience. If you want to see a historical building and plus have a good meal, this is a very nice option."

  • "Besides the fresh and beautifully presented menu items it was a pleasure to take a friend from London to this very special location. The restaurant is in the very room where my parents wedding reception was held in 1938. Berkeley certainly needs and deserves an elegant and refined eating establishment and this is it."

  • ". . . kinda says it all. The food was quite good, service attentive as expected. The building itself is a gem, the room of the restaurant, however, is stark. Much could be done to improve the space. There are many fine restaurants in the area, and this does not stand out. But if you're in the area, definitely a good meal."

  • "It was Berkeley Restaurant Week so we went for a $20 3 course lunch with limited but tasty-sounding choices. Part of the charm of the Julia's is being in the City Club, and being able to soak in some of the atmosphere both in the room and within the building. The food was nicely prepared and presented; service slow but polite/attentive-we had three different servers-we did come on the late side for lunch. There were only 3 tables occupied and noise level was comfortable; as the room is all hard surfaces I imagine the noise level could become "energetic". Tablecloths, a small full fresh bouquet on each table, and a large floral arrangement in the center of the room-all very tasteful. Overall a good experience in a memorable setting."

  • "We decided to have dinner here before going to the theatre (Cal performance). Food was decent and the staff were friendly. Manager, however, refused to honor 10% off for theatre goers and demanded to see the theatre website that indicates the discount. We obliged. It's not clear why the manager was so stubborn and disrespectful to the diners. It was a pleasant dining until that disagreeable experience."

  • "The risotto with mushrooms was fantastic. My pork chop was not quite as flavorful as I would have liked. Service was excellent. A very pleasant Julia Morgan dining room and the acoustics were such that you could have an easy conversation. I would go there again"

  • "Great food, quiet dining room, excellent service, prices not too bad! If you're looking to extract yourself from the noise of the south (U.C.) campus area in Berkeley, Julia's is the place."

  • "Four of us dined here before a theatrical performance also at the Berkeley City Club. We enjoyed salads, followed by four entrees (porck chop, sole, rack of lamb, and gnocchi with short ribs) and we shared two desserts. The only downside was that the gnocchi dish was too spicy for the orderer, though she had discussed it thoroughly with the waiter beforehand-- his assurances that it would not be too spicy were, well, inaccurate. We ended up happily sharing our meals, and those of us who could enjoy the pepperiness found the gnocchi dish quite tasty. The dining room is a lovely space, as is the rest of the BCC. As one of us said afterward, it was like being transported to Europe, having driven only minutes from home. We will be back."

  • "From the moment you set foot in the restaurant you are treated as if you are a valued guest. Wait staff was attentive and each course was fabulous. The Julia Morgan building is beautiful and such a pleasant location to eat a relaxing dinner."

  • "Julia's is a gem in the middle of the Berkeley foodie scene that is refreshing because of it's throw back style. From another era but thoroughly up to date. We are missing old "clubby" places like this that are still quiet and you can actually talk to your dinner partner. Food was very good. The server was good with out being overbearing."

  • "The food is innovative and delicious. Good apps and salads, pastas, and meats. Our server was Jessica, who was terrific! Great place for dinner before a Cal basketball game! Parking is tough, but you only park once. The room, designed by Julia Morgan is stunning. Also great for lunch"

  • "The building is historic and beautiful. Fun to wander around before or after the dinner. Nice, cozy bar. Wonderfully decorated dining room. Excellent, fresh local food prepared impeccably. Imaginative menu. Informed, warm, professional service staff who are not in your face or no where to be found. A great balance. Could not have been more happy."
