Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent service and food that made a special occasion more so."

  • "Julia's in the Berkeley City Club, named for the renowned California architect Julia Morgan who designed the club and over 700 other unique buildings, has transformed itself into a high-cuisine restaurant. The chef comes from a Spanish family that has been dedicated to fine food for generations. He has trained the kitchen staff and the wait staff to an impressive professional standard. The dining room, like the rest of the club, is far beyond charming. Every detail, including its decorations, was specified by Ms. Morgan, who often took long trips to Europe to find each elegant item. No other restaurant in the Bay Area can, in my opinion, offer Julia's integration of refined food, service and ambiance."

  • "After many years of mediocre food at the Berkeley City Club, Julia's is now one of the excellent restaurants in Berkeley. The atmosphere was always great but even that has been tweaked by the management. Hidden on the second floor of this lovely Julia Morgan building, Julia's shines like a beacon near the campus. It perfect for dinner before one of the numerous cultural events in Berkeley. Before a play or a concert, you will dine elegantly. The food is seasonal, fresh and delicious."

  • "Julia's presents top quality cuisine in a beautiful and relaxing setting. It feels like the old world, but the food is anything but tired! We had superb salads, the butter lettuce and the heirloom tomatoes--every ingredient excellent in both. The king salmon entree was cooked perfectly, absolutely fresh, and served over a fresh corn base that enhanced the salmon filet. Two fruit desserts were amazing. It was quiet on a Thursday night (which we very much appreciate), but it might get noisy when full due to the tile floors and high ceilings."

  • "Our dinner was perfectly delicious. I had the Paperadelle pasta with Duck appetizer, with a peach/ hazelnut salad with the best vinegatette I have ever had -it was so good! My husband had the Roasted Chicken, which was perfectly seasoned with roasted vegetables. We were all delghted with our food and the service is very good also. The building by Julia Moegan is a site to see. So much attention to detail. Reminded us if Hearst Castle which she alsk designed. This is a must go, eat and see. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Beautiful room in Julia Morgan's Berkeley City Club Castle; elegant presentation; excellent food. A wonderful place for a gracious lunch or dinner where it's quiet enough to talk with ease and feel pampered. Very special experience. Will recommend to all my friends."

  • "I went to Julia's with my wife for a night out. We had the corn soup and grilled squid appetizers and shared the risotto and peach empanada for our entree and dessert. Everything was excellent, with the risotto and soup as particular standouts. The server was friendly and helpful, and the wine list was good but very reasonably priced. We had drinks, a bottle of wine, and went home stuffed for less than $100. Highly recommended."

  • "What a wonderful surprise - discovering this historic Julia Morgan building AND enjoying a delicious dinner in its restaurant. The food was excellent, as was the wait staff, especially our server. The restaurant maintains a great ambiance: the staff is very attentive without being intrusive. The atmosphere has an old-world formality without being stuffy and embraces a casualness without sacrificing elegance. I look forward to future visits."

  • "My daughter and her boyfriend moved to Berkeley recently, so I booked a stay the Berkeley City Club and made a dinner reservation at Julia's to treat them. This historic dining room is absolutely gorgeous, and the drinks and dining were first rate. The service was very good. All in all a wonderful experience, and I plan to return!"

  • "This is in the beautiful Berkeley City Club, designed by Julia Morgan. The atmosphere is elegant, the food well-prepared, and the staff friendly. We had gone some weeks ago, and really wanted to go back. Both visits we went with friends, and everyone was impressed with the menu and loved their meals. I loved that they had a whole section on the wine menu of half bottles. We will definitely return, and so will the people who came with us."

  • "I can recommend all the lunch items I and my guests have tried at Julia's so far but the prix fixe three course lunches on the shaded terrace (only on Wednesdays during the summer) are an especially good bargain in a wonderful setting at $26 (for BCC non-members) or 30% less for club members."

  • "Our visit was on a slow night; July 3. The four of us took BART to downtown Berkeley and walked 6 blocks to the Berkeley City Club (Julia's is located inside). The building alone is worth visiting. Julia Morgan designed this building to be pleasing to the eye in every direction. Looking out a window one sees art in every form. The bar and separate restaurant are intimate, quiet, and peaceful. Meals we ordered were excellently prepared for taste and visual. Liked the fact that the food was not covered in salt. Seasoning was subtle and flavorful. If there was background music I wasn't aware of it. It was nice to chat with good friends and not have to scream. The service was impeccable. Hardly new the wait staff was there."

  • "A great surprise to find such excellence in a historic setting not previously known for fine dining. I have been there three times for lunch and dinner and found the food now worthy of this classic setting. Julia would have been pleased and I suspect Alice would as well. Most of all this is a gorgeous work of architecture now graced with the prospect of fine dining all worthy of much public support."

  • "This was a really nice place in the middle of Berkeley that I didn't even know existed although I live two miles away. The soup was the best-- portions are fairly large, so share things to save room for desserts."

  • "With the new chef this restaurant has become top rate. On 21 June I had the best halibut I've ever eaten anywhere - exquisitely cooked and delicately, flavorfully seasoned - outstanding! And what could be beter than to eat in a Julia Morgan designed dining room in a historic Morgan building?!"

  • "What a find, located in a medieval castle! Quiet, perfect for conversation. Excellent, creative food. Interesting blends of flavors. We had duck ad risotto. Jessica was a perfect, attentive waitress. Unique experience. We will return."

  • "Service not to the standards of previous times we've eaten here. When I order a bottle of wine, I expect it to be chilled if a white wine - ours came to the table quite warm. I expect the wine to be presented at the table to confirm it is the wine I ordered, opened at the table and for me to be given an opportunity to taste the wine - ours came already opened and was unceremoniously poured full throttle into our glasses. Since we are being charged an 18% service fee, then the service has to be at that level of cost - and it's not. When the check was brought to the table, the empty plates were not even removed. If I'd had discretion in tipping, it would have been more towards 10%."

  • "My wife and I had our private anniversary dinner at Julia's and were quite pleased. Nice selection of appetizers, entrees and deserts. Well presented, attentive (but not overbearing) service. Not our normal type of venue and being in Julia Morgan's historical building made it indeed a special occasion"

  • "This was a college graduation celebration for my daughter, which included her fiance, my son and daughter-in-law (who flew in from DC) , my husband and me. We had driven 300 miles for the weekend and wanted this dinner to be special. I wanted the food to be amazing, the location to be significant, the service warm but unobtrusive and the surroundings quiet enough to have a long conversation. Julia's was everything that I had hoped. My daughter was thrilled and the rest of the family was impressed. The dessert menu was so enticing that we decided to order one of everything and share. The entire meal was prepared with care and presented with attention to the aesthetic. We truly enjoyed the evening and would highly recommend."

  • "This restaurant is located in a beautiful building designed by Julia Morgan, the same architect who designed the Hearst Castle. It is stunning setting, combining Moorish and European elements in an imaginative Art Deco format, with vintage lighting fixtures and lovely fresh flowers. The food is elegantly and simply prepared, and lives up to the setting. Very romantic and appealing."

  • "I have lived in Berkeley for many years and had once visited the Berkeley City Club, but this was the first time I had eaten at the restaurant. It is really lovely, and the four of us were charmed by the room and pleased with our meal. Service was friendly and gracious, and we enjoyed the whole experience. Will definitely go back."

  • "This restaurant is set in The Berkeley City Club so just going there is a treat to explore the Julia Morgan designed building. Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful, bringing us a sample of two wines when we couldn't make up our minds as well as providing information about the events at the Club. The food was Very Good (I have yet to use Outstanding for any food rating so Very Good really is)- our table had the lamb chops and the salmon both cooked perfectly."

  • "Recently had an occasion to celebrate my friend's 65th Birthday with a lunch at Julia's. Despite almost a full restaurant with one server - our lunch arrived timely and was beautifully presented, hot and delicious .The wild mushroom/pea risotto was cooked perfectly. The rolls were steaming hot with a generous portion of butter. The grande finale was a lovely banana cake with a candle presented to my friend complimentary from the Chef. I could not have asked for more, Thank you ! "

  • "not wait to get us out. They kept rushing to and by our table , took our plates while food was still there. Then we wanted to sit back for just a bit with coffee and tea. Mind you not forever, but just a wee bit after our meal. Oh the scowls they gave us. The restaurant had said they were completely booked. However the restaurant was filled with empty tables. Only a fourth of it was filled. The ambiance cannot be beat, but the service, if that is the norm would keep me from going back. The food was okay, but the eggs on my Benedict were over cooked. The yellow was hard. So sad it turned out like this as I was really looking forward to Mother's day at Julia's."

  • "The entire dining experience at Julia's was exceptional. The food was perfectly prepared. Service was exceptional. We were especially pleased with complete willingness for us to split two appetizers and the entre' with no charge and not a blink. The result was a dining experience that was just right."

  • "Julia's continues to expand their creative talents: delicious food & wine, excellent presentation, friendly & timely service. Historic architecture provides a wonderful ambiance. It's no wonder so many weddings take place there. Be sure to check the Berkeley City Club activities & entertainments that are available in the same building as well. We have dined there at least twice a year for a number of years & have never been disappointed."
