Diner Reviews
  • "Our visit was on a slow night; July 3. The four of us took BART to downtown Berkeley and walked 6 blocks to the Berkeley City Club (Julia's is located inside). The building alone is worth visiting. Julia Morgan designed this building to be pleasing to the eye in every direction. Looking out a window one sees art in every form. The bar and separate restaurant are intimate, quiet, and peaceful. Meals we ordered were excellently prepared for taste and visual. Liked the fact that the food was not covered in salt. Seasoning was subtle and flavorful. If there was background music I wasn't aware of it. It was nice to chat with good friends and not have to scream. The service was impeccable. Hardly new the wait staff was there."

  • "A great surprise to find such excellence in a historic setting not previously known for fine dining. I have been there three times for lunch and dinner and found the food now worthy of this classic setting. Julia would have been pleased and I suspect Alice would as well. Most of all this is a gorgeous work of architecture now graced with the prospect of fine dining all worthy of much public support."

  • "This was a really nice place in the middle of Berkeley that I didn't even know existed although I live two miles away. The soup was the best-- portions are fairly large, so share things to save room for desserts."

  • "This was a perfect spot for my recent business lunch/meeting. The food, service and ambiance were excellent. I've found a home for my local meetings!"

  • "With the new chef this restaurant has become top rate. On 21 June I had the best halibut I've ever eaten anywhere - exquisitely cooked and delicately, flavorfully seasoned - outstanding! And what could be beter than to eat in a Julia Morgan designed dining room in a historic Morgan building?!"

  • "Service not to the standards of previous times we've eaten here. When I order a bottle of wine, I expect it to be chilled if a white wine - ours came to the table quite warm. I expect the wine to be presented at the table to confirm it is the wine I ordered, opened at the table and for me to be given an opportunity to taste the wine - ours came already opened and was unceremoniously poured full throttle into our glasses. Since we are being charged an 18% service fee, then the service has to be at that level of cost - and it's not. When the check was brought to the table, the empty plates were not even removed. If I'd had discretion in tipping, it would have been more towards 10%."

  • "What a find, located in a medieval castle! Quiet, perfect for conversation. Excellent, creative food. Interesting blends of flavors. We had duck ad risotto. Jessica was a perfect, attentive waitress. Unique experience. We will return."

  • "We like the plays that are held at the city club; the restaurant in the same building is really good for the quality of the menu presentation and the environment. The food is very good, innovative and fresh."

  • "My wife and I had our private anniversary dinner at Julia's and were quite pleased. Nice selection of appetizers, entrees and deserts. Well presented, attentive (but not overbearing) service. Not our normal type of venue and being in Julia Morgan's historical building made it indeed a special occasion"

  • "This was a college graduation celebration for my daughter, which included her fiance, my son and daughter-in-law (who flew in from DC) , my husband and me. We had driven 300 miles for the weekend and wanted this dinner to be special. I wanted the food to be amazing, the location to be significant, the service warm but unobtrusive and the surroundings quiet enough to have a long conversation. Julia's was everything that I had hoped. My daughter was thrilled and the rest of the family was impressed. The dessert menu was so enticing that we decided to order one of everything and share. The entire meal was prepared with care and presented with attention to the aesthetic. We truly enjoyed the evening and would highly recommend."

  • "This restaurant is located in a beautiful building designed by Julia Morgan, the same architect who designed the Hearst Castle. It is stunning setting, combining Moorish and European elements in an imaginative Art Deco format, with vintage lighting fixtures and lovely fresh flowers. The food is elegantly and simply prepared, and lives up to the setting. Very romantic and appealing."

  • "I have lived in Berkeley for many years and had once visited the Berkeley City Club, but this was the first time I had eaten at the restaurant. It is really lovely, and the four of us were charmed by the room and pleased with our meal. Service was friendly and gracious, and we enjoyed the whole experience. Will definitely go back."

  • "This restaurant is set in The Berkeley City Club so just going there is a treat to explore the Julia Morgan designed building. Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful, bringing us a sample of two wines when we couldn't make up our minds as well as providing information about the events at the Club. The food was Very Good (I have yet to use Outstanding for any food rating so Very Good really is)- our table had the lamb chops and the salmon both cooked perfectly."

  • "Recently had an occasion to celebrate my friend's 65th Birthday with a lunch at Julia's. Despite almost a full restaurant with one server - our lunch arrived timely and was beautifully presented, hot and delicious .The wild mushroom/pea risotto was cooked perfectly. The rolls were steaming hot with a generous portion of butter. The grande finale was a lovely banana cake with a candle presented to my friend complimentary from the Chef. I could not have asked for more, Thank you ! "

  • "not wait to get us out. They kept rushing to and by our table , took our plates while food was still there. Then we wanted to sit back for just a bit with coffee and tea. Mind you not forever, but just a wee bit after our meal. Oh the scowls they gave us. The restaurant had said they were completely booked. However the restaurant was filled with empty tables. Only a fourth of it was filled. The ambiance cannot be beat, but the service, if that is the norm would keep me from going back. The food was okay, but the eggs on my Benedict were over cooked. The yellow was hard. So sad it turned out like this as I was really looking forward to Mother's day at Julia's."

  • "Small. hidden in Berkeley City Club. No signage, entrance limited; think reservatn will admit U. Menu varies & was limited to 7 entrees, plus. All sounded intersting & made in-house by chef Alaun Grimaud. My friends said better than experience at Chez Panisse. We raved of all our dishes, as Grilled Lamb rack with farro, fennel, & picholine olive relish. Glazed snap peas, Roasted beets with hazelnut picada/currants/, Broccoli w calabrian chilies, Grilled asparagus, Rhubarb turnovers. Entrees ranged $22 - 35. Full bar. Such a discovery."

  • "The entire dining experience at Julia's was exceptional. The food was perfectly prepared. Service was exceptional. We were especially pleased with complete willingness for us to split two appetizers and the entre' with no charge and not a blink. The result was a dining experience that was just right."

  • "Julia's continues to expand their creative talents: delicious food & wine, excellent presentation, friendly & timely service. Historic architecture provides a wonderful ambiance. It's no wonder so many weddings take place there. Be sure to check the Berkeley City Club activities & entertainments that are available in the same building as well. We have dined there at least twice a year for a number of years & have never been disappointed."

  • "Easter brunch at Julia's could not possibly have been more splendid. What better setting could there be than a ballroom in a Julia Morgan treasure? Lavish bouquets, beautiful linen, twenty-foot high ceilings, incomparable architecture. Prime rib, ham, salmon, lamb...not a choice of, but all. Eggs Benedict. Every single dish was exciting. Imagine mashed potatoes with prime rib jus! Sign me up for Thanksgiving! "

  • "Julia's is in the Berkeley City Club, a building designed by the famous Berkeley architect Julia Morgan. The dining room is classic Julia Morgan. You sort of feel that you are in a Harry Potter movie. The food and service were great."

  • "What's not to like in this glorious building and dining room designed by Julia Morgan - you can even pretend your a guest at San Simeon if you're into that sort of thing. (Julia Morgan was working on San Simeon at the same time she was designed and overseeing the construction of the City Club)"

  • "A little on the pricy side but quality of food and service are not to disappoint. The beet and goat cheese appetizer was really flavorful, as well as the pea & mushroom risotto with mint in it, that was interesting! and deserts: rhubarb strawberry 'empanadas' with crème fraîche ice cream, yummy! I have to say that I wouldn't call the main dish I had a risotto, not sticky enough! But it was still delicious! Accompanying cocktail and wine made for a great evening followed by the play at Indra's theatre right downstairs in the Berkeley City Club. When will a combo dinner+theatre ticket be available?"

  • "the unique setting in the magnificent Berkeley City Club sets this restaurant apart. The tables are well spaced and beautifully set with fresh flowers. There is always a huge decorative bouquet in the center of the room. The menu is always seasonal and features a nice variety of offerings. The food is carefully prepared and well presented. It is a gourmet dining experience. Wine list is good, with plenty of well priced items. My one complaint is that service tends to be slow if one is trying to finish in time for a concert or theater. A shame, because the desserts are fantastic and last time I was there, there wasn't time to get dessert and be at the concert on time."

  • "Set in the beautiful City Club its a wonderful experience, especially if you have no other occasion to attend events there. The dining room is gorgeous with spectacular wooden beams, concrete arches, and leaded windows. It feels like going out to dinner in an earlier age. After dinner be sure to explore the magnificent rooms and library and certainly don't miss what must be the most beautiful indoor pool north of san simeon. The food is solid if not spectacular and it fits in perfectly with the surroundings. A really nice dinning experience in berkeley."

  • "We were a party of four out for pre-theater dinner. We liked the ambience, we thought the food from appetizers to dessert was very good, nicely presented without being overly fussy, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. In short, we will probably be regulars."

  • "I looked for a restaurant that would be close to Zellerbach and found Julia's. I am a foodie from the get go and was more than pleasantly surprised at the service and food. The salad was dressed perfectly - always looking forward to another bite...And the flat Iron Steak was beyond my expectation. The presentation was beautiful and playful and the steak was both seasoned and cooked to perfection. I am frequently disappointed at how it shows up when I ask for rare - Not here! My waiter (Stephani) was pleasant and attentive. I was there early so I really don't know about the noise level when the dining room is full. ....the place has the feel of an old time women's tea room.....quite a delightful place! I look forward to returning!"
