Diner Reviews
  • "Chose this restaurant for a special occasion dinner and loved the food/wine list. Was disappointed with the choice of seating - seated near the door and a noisy TV in the bar and only later discovered more seating in the rear of the restaurant that we were not offered. Liked the timing and spacing of food courses but would have liked to order another glass of wine and never got that opportunity. Dishes we particularly liked were the pretzels and the bread pudding for dessert."

  • "The food is excellent, and there's a great beer selection. Go on Sunday nights for the 3 or 4 course chef's choice. Never been disappointed."

  • "Great food, friendly service, and warm ambiance. A visit at our table from the chef is always appreciated, and Chef Tio never fails to deliver. Don't miss the lamb reuben sandwich--it's phenomenal."

  • "We had dinner on the patio before seeing a show at Starlight. This was our first time at this restaurant, although our son and wife have strongly recommended it. We agree with their recommendation and will be back."

  • "My wife and I decided to have brunch with her sister's family. Having kids is sometimes hard looking for a nice cozy place where you can enjoy good food and still be able to manage kids . We our daughters with us , one almost 3 y.o. and the almost 7 months plus my 3 y.o niece . They provided us a nice place where we sat and did not disturb the other customers . Front of the house , waitresses and the chef was really warm and welcoming .. Good was great , my wife loved the dish she picked the tofu scrambled with grilled veggies and she loved it and I was happy with my Cuban Benedict. Our daughter got the Mac and cheese and almost finish her bowl.Lastly the orange cheesecake was amazing !! We are looking forward to our next visit !!!"

  • "The lamb reuben sounded really creative. But instead, the lamb was overcooked and rather tough. Scallops were a bit too salty and nothing notable. Limited menu."

  • "We had our brithday at Julians it was the most fun we had in while. Our server Bill made our dining a little entertaining. We will be back for just because " date ". Yes after 20 years of marriage we still have date night. Thank Chef Tio. The food was outstanding. This is one of the few places were we dine out and "clean" our plates. If you have not been to Julians then it's time to go."

  • "Large patio perfect for an outdoor Father's Day brunch! Food was very good and we will be back to try the dinner menu!"

  • "Julian and Chef Celina Tio are fantastic! The Brunch Burger and the Eggs Your Way with drop biscuit and sausage were great. Sausage is a good portion with lots of flavor. The burger has a fried egg on top with homemade hollondaise. The restaurant also makes their own ketchup which is great on fries or burgers!"

  • "Was very disapointed in food verses $'s spent. Fourth trip to former great rerstaurant but something has happened to what was a good local restaurant. Probably won't be going back."

  • "The waitress forgot about us multiple times, as well as the people at tables around us. We had to stop other employees a few times to get things she forgot to turn in that we ordered."

  • "We were seated immediately and the waitress was very friendly. However, we asked for indoor seating and had a table next to the open "window" kitchen. The ambiance was that of a small town diner and certainly not on the same scale as the prices. The food was average and nothing to go back a second time for. Perhaps dining outside would have had a better feel but due to the limited selection and the cost of the meals I would not return."

  • "It was a Tuesday night and we were the only people in the restaurant - the food was very good - the wine list needs a little work."

  • "It is awesome to have such a quality restaurant in the Brookside neighborhood. The menu was affordable, well designed, provided great a combinations of options and flavors. The waiting staff were friendly and efficient. A great way to celebrate a special occasion without going overboard."

  • "Wonderful food, great service. The outdoor seating was great and 1/2 price bottle of wine."

  • "The menu was creative, thoughtful, and (most importantly) delicious! The Chef created a a wonderful selection that pleased everyone in our party (including two children). We have various food allergies, and the Chef accommodated us easily and gracefully - we even got dessert (which almost never happens)! We couldn't have asked for a better Mother's Day Brunch!"

  • "Love Celine Tio on Food Network and was really looking forward to Julian's. Ambience and presentation are great but the food is not worth mentioning. Salmon deviled eggs were ok, nothing special; menu mentioned toasts as an accompaniment but they weren't on the plate. My pork shoulder was tender but not memorable. My husband's chicken was salty - literally no taste but salt. We had the Pale Ale mac and cheese as a side - again so salty as to be inedible and completely unremarkable. Given a choice, I'd opt for a box of Kraft mac and cheese. We skipped dessert. Soooooo disappointed "

  • "My fault. Hoped to order off menu, but they only had a prefixed menu for Mothers' Day. It would be beneficial if that information is more apparent when making reservations. It was more food than I wanted. I would have picked another restaurant if I'd known. Server was absent, inattentive."

  • "Hopefully those considering dining at Julian will read this review and select a different venue. Where do I begin? The whole experience was expensive and disappointing - especially after Julian received very positive ratings on Open Table. Beginning with the ambiance...our family dressed nicely only to have our server dressed in jeans and a T-Shirt. The interior decor was more "diner-like" than anticipated. The food took a very LONG time to arrive and the dining room was half full. The server seemed a bit clueless and unwilling to accomodate any special requests (my daughter was on a special diet). The food portions were VERY small and clearly not worth the price. MUCH better dining choices exist in the KC area! "

  • "Mother's day specials were excellent plus specialty house red and white wines, where were really lovely. INterested colors and textures of foods, taste was terrific and exciting. We sat on patio and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves all the way through the experience. "

  • "We have eaten at Julian for several meals -- lunch and dinner. The pasta with shrimp and peas, the vegetarian meal and the arugala salad were all ok, not memorable at all. We live in the neighborhood and want to like it more. Good space, service fine, but we probably won't go back unless we start hearing great things from friends."

  • "My first visit. The food was very good. Service was a little slow. Waitress had too many tables. Menu was very interesting. I had a lamb reuben, which was excellent."

  • "we had wanted to sit outside because the weather was perfect, but that is first come first serve, so it was full.. we did have a nice seat inside and there weren't many people in there, so it was quiet. Food was delicious and we had a super friendly waitress.. got a bottle of sparkling wine for our Anniversary and it was great.. perfect amount of food, didn't leave totally stuffed.. highly recommend!"

  • "We decided to try Julian on a very rainy day. The place was virtually empty for lunch and I assume it was due to the weather because the food was great. The bowl of mussels were outstanding, the lamb reuben just good due to the lamb being slightly dry (although the house made pickles and coleslaw were delicious). The waitress here was so nice, walking us to our car with an umbrella when the rain just wouldn't quit. I would definitely recommend that anyone in Kansas City who loves good service and who enjoys unique takes on traditional dishes try Julian."

  • "The Spring menu is wonderful! The service is always great, and the Chef is so friendly. We look forward to returning to try other things on the menu because it's truly hard to choose just one. Julian is always the best choice for a night out with great food!"

  • "Menu selections not exceptional. Food was good but bland. "

  • "While all of the items, especially the entrees are always great at Julian, sometimes you just need a great cheeseburger. This is the place to go in Kansas City. My favorite is with smoked gouda, mushrooms and bacon. And great crispy fries come with it as well."

  • "My friend Jennifer and I took part in Julian's first pig roast of the year, and once again Chef Celina Tio went whole hog with preparation and presentation. Delicious pork and excellent side dishes were plentiful (the curry and grape potato salad was a standout for me), and an outstanding time was had by all."

  • "Could not ask for a better experience. Everything was perfect. Accomodating and friendly host, expert server and first notch food."

  • "Great food in small portions so it's easy to get an appetizer, entree, and dessert. However, both men at the table thought the portions were too small. It's expensive, but what you get is perfectly prepared. We ate in the back room while the sun was setting and the tables were arrange so on half of all people in the room faced the window. This silhouetted my dining companions. It was a major detractor from the ambience. The server did eventually pull down the shade, but I think if the tables were simply turned 90 degrees the problem would be solved. There is an open window to the prep area which was both annoying and interesting. The food and prices suggest an upscale dining experience, but the room and dress are quite casual."

  • "Seemed as if Julian was a bit hassled the night we dined. Not sure what was going on, but the meal was off with regard to taste and atmosphere. Was good, but usually is excellent."

  • "I made a lunch date to meet a new business friend at Julian's. The service was great and the food the best. It was quiet enough to hold a great conversation and there was no rush even though it was the lunch hour. Made for a very nice relaxing business lunch. I will return."

  • "I have wanted to eat at Julian for so long, so I was so excited about going. Our appointment was on a Friday at 7 pm. When we arrived I noticed there were more employees than customers- that should have been my first clue. We ordered drinks then pretzels as appetizers. It was terrible. It appeared that it had been microwave. When we explained this to the waitress she quickly told us that there were no microwaves. We decided to leave. My friend was told that Julian was a hit or miss as far as the food and service. My experience was definitely a miss. We will not be going back. We went to restaurants around the block and they were all very busy."

  • "My wife and I went there on a Friday evening. It was not crowded at all and all the staff was very friendly. We had seen Chef Tio on the Next Iron Chef and after we found out that she was from Kansas City we just had to come experience her restaurant. The food was amazing. There is not a large selection, but that's a good thing because they take the time to make great food. I had the Pork Belly and my wife had Scallops. Both were amazing. Definitely a place we'll be going back to!"

  • "Not overly impressed with the food, the service and especially not the setting itself. Had expected more. The outdoor dining might be nice, given the right day/time, but inside is sort of ordinary and noisy - nothing special. We were disappointed after having planned to try this for quite a while...."

  • "Whenever we go to Kansas City, we live in Wichita, my husband and I make a point to have an evening at Julian's. We usually order whatever the waiter/waitress suggests and have been WOWed every time even if it is something we thought we didn't like. It is quiet and romantic but not stuffy or dressy. We just left and can't wait to return!"

  • "Our first visit was during lunch, and we left not clearn on why Julian has a good reputation. Thanks to a Christmas gift card, we made a second visit, this time for dinner. And it was a completely different experience. Both our dishes were excellent, as was the starter salads and dessert, and the wait staff was friendly and welcoming. It was a snowy night, and there were many empty tables, so maybe we got extra attention. But I don't think so. I think we saw the real Julian -- the one with great, satisfying food with a welcoming, warm ambience. We'll be back!"
