JulianGood for a special occasionWe celebrated our wedding anniversary at Julian with a wonderful meal and excellent service. The atmosphere was casual but not loud. The staff were friendly and attentive but not overbearing. We both had trout and agreed it was delicious. We would recommend Julian for any occasion.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMKC, MO's best-kept secretjames-beard, award-winning chef, celina tio, does it right. comfy, casual atmosphere & well-appointed, minimalistic decor complement the fare, prepared with locally produced meats, fishes, & fruits &vegetables. loved the house-smoked salmon, deviled egg crostini, arugula salad with fried duck egg, & oysters on the half shelf. the trout with a rice pilaf & the garganelli in a delicate marscapone sauce with sweet, english peas & julienned asparagus were outstanding. the wine list is modest, but terrific. it's selection of domestic & imported wines does not overwhelm. especially liked the brut sparkling rose from new mexico & enjoyed the trimbac gewürtzraminer from the alsace. not least of all was the competent & unobstrusive service. perfect!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMMust go!I have been going here for 6 months. The food is always fresh and very good. The chef and entire kitchen team put out a lot of effort and it shows. The dining room is nice, try to sit in the back room or patio if nice weather. I am sad to leave K.C but even sadder I will no longer have this reliable place to enjoy a meal!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMJulianJulian's creative menu provides a good choice for discriminating diners. Of special note were the Bowl of Mussels from the started menu. The slightly briny poaching liquid was a lovely counterpoint to sweet and perfectly cooked mussels. I can see our party of four returning soon for a couple of orders. The corn crepes which pillowed the lovely scallops was another highlight of the evening.
The sensible portions are a welcome change from restaurants that seem to feel they will be feeding a team of lumberjacks.
Overall a lovely experience for two senior couples celebrating anniversaries. We will be making more visits.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMbrunchI loved the brunch burger......it was wonderful! Also love the bloody marys. Excellent service and great food!6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMSundays are best!We dined at Julian on a Sunday, when Chef Tio serves her version of family style... no menu, you eat what she feels like cooking. She called us prior to our reservation to make sure we were aware of the style of her Sunday meals and made sure there were no food restrictions that she needed to keep in mind. My husband has quite a few food allergies, and Chef Tio took them all into consideration swapping out 2 of the 4 courses to accommodate. The food she made that night was AMAZING!! I would highly recommend Julian to my friends, especially on a Sunday.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA wonderful eveningOur party of 4 thoroughly enjoyed the evening at Julian's. Our appetizers, chicken pate with pickled blackberries, bowl o' mussels, crispy fried chicken and local lettuce salad, were the perfect size taking the edge off of our hunger but not filling us so that we could not enjoy our entrees. Each entree (seared trout, the lamb rueben, the sauteed beef and the salmon in pouch) was incredibe. We followed our entrees with dessert and coffee. We left feeling that very comfortable fullness after a delightful meal. We will definitely return.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMBirthday DinnerFrom the time we came in the front to leaving the restaurant, the staff was very inviting and friendly. The dinner was amazing from appetizers to dessert, you must have the sautéed Beef for dinner!5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMElegant cuisine, corner comfortVery high quality meals, beautifully prepared and presented by a friendly staff. Over the top elegant meals in a neighborhood corner comfort.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFriday nightHomemade sausage appetizer was outstanding. Wine list is limited but good quality. Trout main plate was fresh and perfectly cooked. Wife had scallops that melted in mouth. Ambience is plain but service and food more than made up for it. I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's Day BrunchJulian has a very relaxed atmosphere with a wait staff who dress in tee-shirts and jeans. It is a good place to go if you are looking for a tasty, laid-back meal conducive to light conversation. The kitchen is open and located right next to one of the dining areas but the flurry of activity there did not seem to be disruptive. The wait staff was courteous and attentive, the meals were served in a timely manner but not rushed and we were able to enjoy each course. The smoked salmon and deviled egg appetizer served as a brunch selection was wonderful and the grilled trout was also quite good with a nice crispiness on the skin making it easy to eat with the fish. I am not normally a big trout fan but this I would definately order again.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful BrunchI took my Mother to the Julian Mother's Day Brunch a few weeks ago. Though the menu was limited for the special event, there was no shortage of great options. As a vegetarian, I was able to find something for each of my 3 courses, starting with the Asparagus Salad. The Asparagus was perfectly prepared with a lovely lemon tarragon cheese. I love with Chef Tio does with her herb infusions. For my main course, I had the seared trout. Trout is my favorite fresh water fish and this was cooked perfectly with the ideal sides and seasons. I ate every bit.
My Mother enjoyed the white gazpacho and crispy short ribs.
Lastly, we were quite full by dessert time, so the server was very kind to box up our desserts to take with us.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMI have been to a lot of restaurantsI have been to a lot of restaurants and this is probably the best food I have eaten locally and abroad. I took my mother for Mother's Day and we both enjoyed every course. No complaints about any of the food we sampled. I am still thinking about the salmon deviled egg crostini that we had for appetizers...smoked salmon, creamy deviled egg salad...delish! The outdoor dining was a great experience as well...nice quiet atmosphere for enjoying a beautiful May day.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMChef Tio is a treasureChef Celine Tio continues to create wonderful food. The menu changes from time to time and her flavor combinations are great. My new favorite is the pate with pickled blackberries. The wait staff is efficient and friendly without being in the way. We enjoy watching the action in the kitchen.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat FoodWe ordered pretzel sticks and gouda cheese sauce, I really wanted to try the cheese sauce. They were out of pretzels so they brought us some cheese to try it was excellent. The service was fun and light and we enjoyed our time there.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGet the Cheese Cake for Sure!Chef was nice to come to our table and thank us for coming and ask how things were!! Great little find in Brookside, great food...fun unique changing menu...the cheesecake was insane!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe mussels and bread puddingThe mussels and bread pudding was fabulous! I think the bread pudding is the best one I've had EVER! Chef Celina was also very friendly and came to our table to ask how we were doing and how our food was tasting. I even asked to get a picture with her and she was more than happy to do so. We also came on a good night because they had a special of 3 courses for $30 and any wine bottles $75 were half off. Awesome deal! I would definitely come back here.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSunday is by far the bestSunday is by far the best night to eat at Julian unless you are a picky eater. You get delicious creations from the chef - what ever she wants to make. Its an exciting experience.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMMade the reservation on theMade the reservation on the way, which made us a little skeptical. Didn't really know anything about the place. What a neat place, and the chef even brought out our food. Salad was tasty, trout was very good, even the skin. We will go back!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was a small place, butThis was a small place, but the food was spectacular! The chef competed on Iron Chef and even took a picture with us. The Mussels, scallops and salmon were great.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSaw Chef Tio compete on IronSaw Chef Tio compete on Iron Chef America and was on a business trip to Kansas City so wanted to try her restaurant. Food was excellent and great choices for every course. I would eat there again the next time I am in town.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best in the city. One of the best in the city. Cool hip scene that makes me feel like I'm eating in Chicago and not KCMO.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went on a Monday night,We went on a Monday night, and what good luck that was! On Monday nights it's 1/2 off bottles of wine less than $75 and you can get a 3 course (app/main/dessert) meal for $30! Chef Celina Tio brought the food out to the tables herself and to top it off the food was amazing. We got the housemade sausage, salmon crostinis, beef, scallops, cheese plate, bread pudding and the mac and cheese to go. I would recommend everything!!!4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMNot crowded for Easter brunch. Not crowded for Easter brunch. Delicious food and great service. It was refreshing to go to a place that offers superb meals without the did-I-dress-appropriately-for-the-place worry in the back of your mind. If you're in the Kansas City area, you will do yourself a tremendous injustice if you don't eat at Julian.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous first time to Julian.Fabulous first time to Julian. I live that you can just go for a great burger or go all out for an anniversary dinner.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMChef Tio is amazing. FoodChef Tio is amazing. Food was outstanding and the entire staff made us feel very welcome. One of my top picks for a restaurant in U. S.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst visit but not our last! This was our first visit to Julian, but it won't be our last! The dining area was small but intimate and the food was DELICIOUS! I had scallops that were seared to perfection and my husband's beef was cooked perfectly. The plates are small, but filling and left us room for dessert. My husband had chocolate ganache with stout caramel that he really enjoyed and I had the coffee panna cotta with chocolate sauce which was very, very good. We can't wait for spring so we can dine outside.
Chef Tio was very friendly and engaging.
Overall, a really great experience.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMHidden KC gemSmall restaurant in Brookside. Wine list with some good finds. Homemade pretzel sticks with gouda sauce were great. Also tried the homemade sausage which I enjoyed. Tried the imported italian pasta, pork belly, chicken confit and pork shoulder. Everyone at table had great things to say about their meals. We decided to try panna cotta and bread pudding for dessert, they were both good. Our server was attentive and informed. Chef Celina even came by our table and chatted.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMy companion and i ate thereMy companion and i ate there on a friday night when the weather was unusually warm for March, allowing us to eat on the patio. It was lovely. The patio is close to the intersection of several streets, so if you're looking for a quiet place, this isn't it. we love to people watch, so we enjoyed it. Food was delicious. We had the pretzel sticks with smoked gouda dip, i had the sauteed beef and my companion had the scallops. everything we had, down to the salads and accompaniments, was delicious. Desserts were delicious and portioned sensibly. wine list allowed for some adventure and wasn't too expensive. We'll go back.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst of hopefully many visitsMy wife and I were taking a weekend trip to the Country Club Plaza before she started a new job and we chose Julian because of the menu that was listed on the OpenTable web site. The food was amazing, the flavor combinations were exceptional, providing balance, enhancement and enjoyment.
Our waitress Sarah was attentive and a lot of fun
Spoke with the chef on the way out and look forward to going back3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMJulian's is a terrific placeJulian's is a terrific place to eat - food is always great & ample servings. The chocolate ganauch (sp?) is - as they say - to die for. My only wish is that the chairs were a bit softer. I will be back.1/21/2013 12:00:00 AMcelina always does an outstandingcelina always does an outstanding job which is why this was our 1st pick for restaurant week.
