A word from Jsix Restaurant
Jsix is an American restaurant featuring small plates of fresh, local farm-to-table produce and sustainably raised meats. We feature community dining tables, a spacious bar and lounge in a comforting, neighborhood atmosphere. Our head bartender, Nate Howell, stocks the bar with quality-focused American spirits and mixes a mean drink. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We were a fairly large group of 8 which allowed me to sample several things. The food was utterly mediocre - tasteless ceviche and fried avocado, bland halibut, overcooked steak. The server was mostly absent and downright confrontational. The wine list is minimal (and they were out of my first two choices). Don't understand how this place survives."

  • "We were celebrating a birthday, plus just couldn't choose from the new and impressive menu, so we decided to splurge on the 5-course tasting menu with wine pairings. I'm so glad we did! We received special courses "off the menu," each accompanied by a generous half-pour of wine. All five courses and wines were separately introduced and explained to us at tableside. Each plate was a taste sensation and we tried wines we would not ordinarily have ever selected ourselves. What a fun and entertaining way for a foodie couple to spend our special evening.... the cocktails are superb, as well! We hope to be back soon and I would definitely recommend the tasting menu here."

  • "Everything was beyond our expectations! Quality of food was exceptional and fresh! We had gluten free needs and it was catered to with pleasure! Service was wonderful. Chef came out to meet us. Halibut was the best we have ever had! This place is impressive!!"

  • "Food wasn't great - meat wasn't tender, pairings seemed conceptual rather than spot on, noise level was incredibly loud, and it felt like people were wandering through on their way to the hotel. Service was slow and seemed almost resentful when we asked for refills on water."

  • "Food and service ( Michelle) was very good, but the music to much to take loud and heavy didn't relax a bit Too much Driving Modern music. Chef Christian can COOK, Eat your Organic Vegetables!!"

  • "While visiting San Diego, my husband and I met up with two friends for dinner. We picked Jsix based on some of the reviews on open table and were not disappointed. This play was one of the best meals we have had in a long time! Our server was attentive and friendly and he did a great job with a couple of wine pairings. The food was outstanding and it was nice to be able to thank the chef as he walked around checking on the tables. The halibut and the pork meatballs were two of our favorite dishes, not to mention the strawberry tart for dessert! I would highly recommend this place to anyone interested in a great food at a reasonable price."

  • "trendy, nicely designed decor. it's a hotel restaurant though, which I didn't realize when booking through OT! went for Sunday brunch on a special occasion and the menu was minimal. Parking in the area was tough. Nothing super special about it, but a good basic breakfast."

  • "So happy checking Fodor's resulted in trying Jsix. I was actually looking for a restaurant with more vegetarian selections, but the organic description intrigued me as well as the dinner menu selections. With the service and food so enjoyable, I would never have guessed Jsix had only been open a month."

  • "If you're looking for a large breakfast of pancakes with bacon or a couple of eggs with bacon, toast, etc, this is not the place. There's an egg white omelet and many different options for a yogurt parfaits, but not much "standard " breakfast food. Service was fast and friendly."

  • "I've been to this restaurant five or six times and always order the Chef's Mercy. It's a 5-course tasting menu. I get it with the wine pairing. You can tell the chef if you have any food allergies or significant aversions (e.g., I don't like Ginger), and then just be surprised with each course. It has never disappointed. And it's always more food than you can eat. I usually take most of the main course home."

  • "Because of the vibrant bar scene, rooftop access, and its service to the Hotel Solamar, the restaurant side of JSix remains under-appreciated. Its diverse menu of select organic foods and wines is a welcoming, refreshing change from larger, tedious menus of other downtown establishments. The service really shines. I recommend reservations due to its smaller size, and the crab cakes and pork chop!"

  • "What a special and delightful surprise! We will make this a dinner destination whenever we are in San Diego."

  • "I had to meet an out of town friend for a business lunch and needed a quiet place to talk. The restaurant made a special salad for me and it almost came the way that I wanted it. I had requested no pine nuts but the salad came with nuts anyway (they were fine but not on my diet). My colleague had a hamburger which he claimed was terrific. It came almost raw and was sent back to the kitchen with great apologies. I was almost done with my salad by the time the hamburger re-arrived. I was a bit surprised that they didn't comp us for at least part of the meal."

  • "Had dinner at the newly remodeled JSix on Friday night. First off, the renovation is incredible... great ambiance and feel throughout. The craft cocktails were incredibly creative, well balanced and unique, all inspired by different parts of the country. The food was amazing; highlights for me were the crab pancakes, the raw organic sweet pea salad, and the braised rabbit and spinach pasta. Each dish was a fresh and innovative, and I loved that the ingredients are locally sourced. Our server was fantastic, he checked on us gracefully throughout the night . We have been looking for a great upscale dining spot downtown that isn't just another steakhouse chain, and finally found it at the new JSix! Absolutely delicious!"

  • "Dinner at Jsix was amazing. The renovations look great and the food is delicious. Matt was a great server and very knowledgable about the new menu and beverages. I would suggest the smokes salmon salad as an app and the halibut or steak for a main. This is one of my favorite restaurants downtown. Keep up the great work Jsix!"

  • "This eclectic restaurant, aptly named for its location on the corner of J St. and Sixth Ave., prides itself on locally sourced and organic ingredients whipped up into tasty dishes that are a fusion of local and modern American cuisines. The space is located adjacent to a trendy hotel (where you have to go if you need the restroom - the only downside to this spot) and resembles a lofty warehouse. The menu is not expansive, but there seemed to be something for everyone at our table. I'll happily return the next time I'm in town."

  • "I've been looking forward to the re-opening with high hopes, and our dinner experience on 2/21/14 did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in, we were constantly wowed by the stellar service. The interior is very inviting and surprisingly a bit quirky, and we loved all of it. For the most part, the starters and appetizers (strawberry salad, taro chips/green strawberry salsa (a bit flat) chicken meatballs bathed in a symphonic broth, and crab pancakes with generous heapings of crab meat) we shared were both innovative and delicious. Both our entrees, halibut and chicken, were flavorful, moist, and delectable. Looking forward to a return visit!"

  • "We are New Yorkers from Manhattan and we are foodies so our bars might be a bit high... The Great, Good, Bad, Ugly: The Great was the service...our waitress was fabulous - knew the menu extremely well and was able to explain nearly everything on what is organic, gluten free, veg/meat options The food was Good not Great...all the dishes were presented well but none of them had a wow factor. It was my mother-in-law's birthday and we had probably 5 starters and 3 entrees so we had a good subsection of the menu. Our favorite item on the menu Rainbow Beets or Crab Pancake... The Bad and Ugly was the location of their restroom...they didn't have one. You had to go outside into the hotel next door through the lobby and hang a left...???"

  • "Kimpton Hotels have exciting restaurants. Unfortunately, this one disappointed. Perhaps they are working out the bugs in newly redesigned space, but it didn't work. The lighting was awful. One side of the restaurant was brightly lit, while the other side was dim. Made it awkward to know where to sit. Food was good, but not great. I had pork chops and grits. Tasted good, but not memorable. We ordered chips and dip, which were innovative, but two few chips with too much dip. The place has good bones and an innovative menu. Unfortunately a lot more details need to be thought through."

  • "Snap Pea salad and Rainbow Beet salad - both are not to be missed! Appreciate the half orders SO very much. You can try all the light fare to share with a friend on the half order. The Steak Salad also looked great for a boost for your immune with rainbow quinoa and spinach salad. The bar menu - Big Sky is not to be missed."

  • "I was staying at Hotel Solamar. It was a prefect place for a quiet night for dinner. Service was great as was the food. A definite return the next time I am in San Diego."

  • "We had wonderful food and service at JSix, but there was one confusing thing. My daughter and I wound up ordering identical dinners--a particular salad (very yummy) and a pasta dish. There were 2 sizes for the pasta dishes, but we didn't specify, nor were we asked, which size we wanted. When it was delivered, the waiter said, "here's your large pasta order." It was certainly NOT large--which did leave room for dessert, but it made me wonder what the small size would have been. Then I thought maybe they assumed I was splitting the large order with my daughter, though nothing had been said to this effect. I didn't give it a lot of thought at the time, nor did I study my check carefully--too busy talking and then getting to a function."

  • "By far the best meal I have EVER had. We were adventurous and went with "The Chefs Mercy". Every course was expertly prepared and paired with beverages. The New York strip with Duck fat Potatoes was amazing! Jason, Lexy and Jared made the evening special for both of us."

  • "We meet for a late breakfast on Friday morning after Thanksgiving at J6. We were seated immediately upon arrival and our waiter was on top of our service as soon as we sat. I had the Steak ang Eggs, it was delicious! Everyone in our party of 6 enjoyed their breakfast selection. We're local and live downtown, we're definitely going back to J6 for breakfast. PHD"

  • "we went on a kimpton 3 course tasting and wine special. everything was excellent. my entre, the braised short rib was the best (short rib) I've ever had. also good to note is that bottles of wine are half off on Wednesdays. service very good starting with the maitre d who stopped by a few times to make sure we were enjoying everything."

  • "Great first impressions and nice ambience. Food was good with nice range and choices, all tasted very fresh. All this was unfortunately overshadowed by really poor service from our waiter - we had to ask other wait staff or the hostess for everything - could we please order (after 20 mins) and where was our food (after another 40 mins) and I only got the check after several requests when we stood up and started walking towards the door."

  • "We like to eat at J6 once a year or so. It has never disappointed. It is always, tasty and imaginative "comfort food" that is nicely served and convenient for guests attending conferences."

  • "We heard this place was great and we'd been wanting to try it for awhile. We had the opportunity with friends last weekend and we were not disappointed. We ordered off of the Tasting Menu and couldn't believe how much food we actually got for the money, but more importantly how impressive the quality of the food was. Nothing was ordinary. Try the squash blossoms stuffed with risotto, or the black fettucine for an appetizer and the scallops, short ribs or pork chop as an entree, but don't forget to order the cafe mocha creme brulee with pistachio toffee on the side for dessert. You will not be disappointed and all of the wine bottles are only $35 across the board, but better yet, only a $15 corkage fee and you can bring up to 3 bottles!"

  • "This was a fun spot for a big group. We were celebrating a birthday and they even gave us a champagne toast and dessert! I've never been treated so well in a large group setting. The food was fresh and vibrant, don't pass on the short ribs! The only thing I can say is the acoustics aren't great inside so it was a little tough to hear everyone talking but otherwise a fantastic group dinner spot!!!Our service was amazing!"

  • "I will accept half of our less than wonderful dinner since we talked about ordering the 'chef's mercy' tasting menu and almost didn't do it.... but then we did. The first two courses, and the amuse, were really lovely. After that, things fell apart. The diver scallop (course 3) was a pretty presentation, but the acidity of the pickled vegetable ribbon 'pasta' was overpowering and ultimately pretty harsh. The next course was not any better, and dessert was a lunky carrot cake that I ate around to get to the really delicious part of the dish: the marscapone 'paint' on the plate and the butter pecan ice cream. Service, however, was really great and we had a friendly and attentive waitress. She made the night!"

  • "Food was average. Passed a request through the waitress asking the Chef to make the salmon a little spicy. Was served the fish grilled plain and a side dish of a clump wasabe (no soy sauce), some Kim Chee, and a Thai hot sauce. Very poor response"
