  • "The food was very good, prices were reasonable and the ambient was very friendly and casual. I'm planning to come back with my family."

  • "The food is bad period. The short rib taco is the worst taco I ever ate. The paella is over seasoned. This place, the food does not match the price. Also the waiters always rushing you."

  • "I had quite an exquisite time while dining at Joya with an old friend. The service was prompt, I was never left wandering where my server was and my glasses (both alcoholic and water) were never empty. Meaghan was our server and I have to say she did a great job. We ordered the Tapas sampler and were not disappointed, delicious every last bite of it! The Seville Spied is an EXCELLENT cocktail that I would recommend for anyone that likes vodka ;-) The dinner and drinks were so good we thought we might as well splurge on desert: pineapple cake with vanilla ice cream. YUM. I must say everything about the evening from the service, to the actual food, to the setting was top of line. Will definitely be visiting again."

  • "The four of us enjoyed the evening at Joya very much. The food was really tasty and service quite good (for being seated in the back of the restaurant where patrons are often ignored!). We'll go again and will recommend it to others!"

  • "JOYA AS ALWAYS WAS FABULOUS. THANK YOU TO THE STAFF!"

  • "Everything was fine, but nothing special. Food was good, not great. Service was friendly but mildly intrusive, and ambiance was lovely (on a summer evening open to the street)."

  • "First time at Joya. Pleasantly surprised. The cerviche (three type sampler) was excellent -- each fresh and different tastes. The salmon was cooked perfectly -- the squash was grilled and juicy. Although the restaurant was busy and atmosphere was lively, we felt relaxed prior to our concert at Bing. We will return."

  • "We were seated inside so it was a bit noisy. The guacamole and varied chips were excellent!! I was disappointed that my glass of wine was overpriced for the very small amount/splash served by the glass. The hanger steak and paella entrees delicious and good sized. My daughter thought her sangria was delightful, tasty and chock full of fruit."

  • "The food is tasty and consistent! Loved the short rib tacos, the crab cakes, the scallops and the tuna tartare!"

  • "It was an ok dinner. We ordered the tapas sampler plate and the sea bass. The tapas plate included: rock cod ceviche, spinach croquetas, chorzio, white corn empanadas, and some other things that I don't really remember. The ceviche was the best and it was fresh and had the right balance of sweet and tangy and salty. The croquetas were decent, but I wouldn't really order again. The chorzio was good, not overly greasy, but it could do with less oil! The empanadas were bland and mostly dough. The sea bass entree was pretty small and it was a bit overpriced for the portion. However, it was cooked very nicely and it was extremely tender. Overall, pretty expensive for the portion sizes but if you order right, it'll be worth it."

  • "The hostess (either Darrel or something similar to that) plain rude. When we asked to have a private corner as a couples so we can enjoy the food and have a nice conversation, she regretfully rejected the table choice and told us that it is only available for 4 people. not even 10 min pass from that incident she offered the table to two guys with a big huge flirting smile. Lesson learned- if you are not a single, young guy avoid asking this specific hostess to accommodate your needs..."

  • "Main complaint is that they allowed a big non-service dog into the restaurant and sat that party next to us inside the restaurant. We moved to another table and the table next to the dog was left empty. The hosts should have only seated that party with their big pet dog to a table outdoors."

  • "We had a fantastic experience at Joya. The food was incredible and every dish exemplified the freshness and flavor of Latin cuisine at it's best. The service was exemplary. See my full review with photos on my blog at www.delish-dish.com!"

  • " Lunch at a Joya sidewalk table was most enjoyable, as my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the pork gambas, latin soup, beef & raisin empenadas, and beef rib tacos. Each item was very tasty and the wait staff was most attentive. It was fun eating a wide range of latin tapas while sitting along University Avenue. Joya's is a good choice for lunch when in downtown Palo Alto."

  • "Last Thursday was my first time at this place. It was a business - friendly get together with potentially new employer. Really nice place, great food and service, very pleasant atmosphere, good cocktails, definitely will come back and have already told to a few friends! Keep it up - please, not too many that combine all of the above and more! "

  • "I came here with my daughters for my birthday. We ordered some tapas and the paella. The food was fabulous, though a bit spicy for kids who are not adventurous eaters. The server was abrupt and rushed, but the support servers who cleared our plates and refilled water were friendly and happy. Wine selection by the glass is limited, much more extensive on the bottle list. My daughter thought the chocolate milk was awesome. I put that it was my birthday on the reservation and no one at the restaurant acknowledged it, not even the hostess. The food is the reason I'd go back. It was a Tuesday night at 8:00 -10:00 pm so this was not a frantic time for the waitstaff to excuse his rudeness. Not very kid friendly."

  • "Loved the food- We had the sampler and paella (takes 40 minutes to prepare). We were so amazed how flavorful everything was. The only thing in the sampler I didn't love was a stuffed pepper- It had some kind of cheese in it, but it was too much cheese for me. The red sangria was great, and the cocktail that resembled a pina colada was yummy for a dessert. The real dessert of churros were also yummy. I don't know it was worth paying that much for churros, but the experience was great. Good service and wonderful atmosphere. Highly recommended- will come back for tapas!"

  • "My brother was in town from Houston, so, it was a special night. Joya just nailed it, they listened regarding the table request and the night went flawlessly. Very good drinks too. It is my "Go To" place in Palo Alto "

  • "I like this place because it features small plates that is perfect for sharing and being social. Ambiance is nice, but a bit loud. Service is terrific. Drinks made perfectly (well made Manhattans are hard to find). Typical Bay Area too-casualness takes away from the niceness, but maybe I'm an uptight northeasterner..."

  • "Always consistent and spectacular. The food is superb and the service to match. I've been dining here for several years and always reserve this as a go to place for special guests and a night out I can ensure meets expectations!"

  • "Californian halibut was overcooked and the beet-inspired add-ons just didn't work I'm afraid. Starter (scallops with pine nuts) was OK at best - but my friend's scallop cerviche was really tasty. Great desert though. Disappointing food but maybe I just chose unwisely from the menu - my friend's two courses were spot on. Great atmosphere and a cracking bar area."

  • "The food was delicious. Had the tuna to start and then the Halibut. Once before I had the hangar steak which was fantastic too. The kitchen closes very early and the restaurant dies down early too. Unfortunately this time, our waiter was in such a hurry to get out of work. He was rude and I thought about asking for another person but didn't think it was worth the hassle. I have not had that experience before so hopefully, he was just having a bad day."

  • "Great food, Great service! We mentioned that one of the party was celebrating a birthday and the waiter brought a surprise cake with candle. The Tuna Tartar is wonderful! I had the salmon and it was fresh and really tasty. It was just a touch over done for my personal taste. I would ask the waiter to have it a little less cooked next time. (but it was still VERY tasty and good) The hanger steak was wonderful with a delicious sauce and the Jerk chicken was also great! The wait staff was attentive and very polite! I love going to this restaurant."

  • "Sat by the window - asked waiter for blanket after sunset (it gets really cold immediately), no response. Asked them to turn on the heaters, they promised to do that but no heat. When asked again they told the heater is actually not working. Asked again to switch tables, then they finally offered to close windows. Also got bill before finished ordering last drinks."

  • "We've been to Joya several times and it's been one or our favorites. Every time we go, we contemplate ordering nothing more than several tuna tartares and crab cakes....they are that good! Unfortunately, this visit was severely disappointing. The windows were all open at 9pm and it was freezing cold, our server was completely absent the whole night, and the food was abnormally disappointing (churros were cold and not fresh, NO tuna tartare available, unbearable margarita, soggy chicken skewers, and terribly bitter kale). The spinach croquetas were delicious, as were the crab cakes, as usual. Our busser was on it and very good, not the server though. Usually EXCELLENT experience at Joya, but definitely not this time. "

  • "The host staff and the server were really cold upon arrival. The server however became very friendly as we got closer to paying. Really fake nice. Not sure what that was all about. The food was really good and some of it outstanding. I would go back and try it again and see how the service is but not return it the service was not improved. There are so many choices of good restaurants in Palo Alto that it does not make sense to go where the service is bad."

  • "We've eaten here several times and not been disappointed yet. We love the small plates and the salads, as well as the cocktails and the interesting wine list. This time I ordered a glass of wine not to my liking (forgot to ask for a taste first), but the server comped it with no complaint and I reordered. That's the kind of service I like. Just bring a jacket if it's the evening - the doors could be open to the outside and the lively street view."

  • "My husband and I ate at Joya once before, eating at the bar because we had not made reservations. Food and drink were great, so we resolved to visit again. This time, I made reservations and we were given our pick of seating. As it was a warm night, we sat outside with our companions, a couple who recently moved to the Bay Area. Again, the service, food and drink were all superb! Three of us shared the Paella Classico -- piled high with shellfish, calamari, chorizo, and chicken, and more than enough for three. Well worth the 40 minute wait! This is my new favorite restaurant!"

  • "I find this restaurant to be a great place to meet someone on a first or second date. It has a vibrant atmosphere, lively, energetic, great decor ( a slice of SF). The food has great presentation but although I have only eaten off of the bar menu (not sure if it's different than the table menus) I found it lacking in taste. The food service was lacking too. I usually order two small plates together which should come out at the same time. They came out about 15 minutes apart."

  • "Lovely greeting. Wonderful atmosphere. Top grades to our servers. Every dish was beautifully plated and delicious. We loved the atmosphere and decor. But it's all about the food that really makes this a repeat restaurant. Thanks for a lovely meal. We'll spread the word to our friends."

  • "We loved the ambience here. It is a great place for a special occasion. The food was a little too bland for my taste. Service was very good until we got our entrees. Then our waiter seemed to have forgotten our existence. Overall I would go back just for the general atmosphere."

  • "This place is really nice for tapas and bigger plates. We had the cevice combo to start. I preferred some over others, but this is a personal not a restaurant thing. The camerons in cream sauce with home made chile tortillas was really excellent. Also had jerked chicken which was good as well. Definitely would come back here."

  • "We have dined here twice. Food is OK and looks mouthwatering based on the menu descriptions. Food was a bit greasy and average in our opinion. The cocktails were flavorful and interesting."

  • "Didn't eat anything we'd send back, but nothing was done really well. Ordered a couple ceviche dishes first. Both were too sweet - one had pineapples and the other oranges. Fish was not the star of the show, which is unfortunate since that's why you order ceviche! Better to go to Reposado. Next: Argentinian hangar steak with cilantro chimichurri. The meat was perfectly cooked (medium rare) on the inside, but the outside was a bit too charred. And while I love chimichurri, they go a bit overboard on the salt. Fleming's, though overpriced, does this much better. Mixed drinks were okay. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but based on these items, we won't run back."
