Diner Reviews
  • "I would have given this place an overall 1 star. The food was genuinely awful, a turkey meatloaf that had the consistency and flavor of whole-grained toast with a side sauce that seemed to have come straight out of a jar. My friend had buttersquash ravioli that came in a generic broth and overall had no flavor. I picked this place last minute because of the good OpenTable reviews, which honestly makes me reevaluate whether I'll ever rely on the app again. I was embarrassed to have chosen this place. On the positive side, the ambiance is fine enough and the waiter, though neither my friend nor I could understand his English, was very nice."

  • "The $30 prix fixe is a great deal with many choices of appetizer, entree, and dessert."

  • "Josie's is a great place for vegetarians and non vegetarians. We went with a large group and there was something that appealed to everyone. I love the healthy options and the complimentary sweet potato puree and bread is super yummy."

  • "Very good food; very good service. very convenient if you are going to the Beacon Theatre."

  • "Josie's used to be one of my favorite restaurants but I was deeply disappointed this time. The restaurant was one of the few places that served healthy food that wasn't boring. This time the food was boring and bland. The calamari were fresh and had the perfect soft, not chewy, texture but they lacked any discernible flavor. The stirfry with tofu was similarly bland. I did eat there on a Monday night and it is possible that the B team was in the kitchen and the food would be better on other days. I was please with the service was attentive but not overbearing."

  • "We found Josie's while looking for a place to have dinner before a show at the Beacon Theater. We were very pleasantly surprised that this restaurant is just next door and offers all natural and organic food. The place isn't fancy but the food was prepared beautifully and tasted just as good. I had the special dinner of skirt steak over salad. It was excellent. We will definitely be back when we are in this neighborhood"

  • "I love their crusted tuna but, this time, got in in the salad. It was good and the tuna was fresh but I forgot that the tuna would be cold. I prefer it warm to hot, even though it is cooked rare. My friend had the chicken teriyaki plate. She has a big appetite but was full and couldn't eat the whole thing. I love their grain bread but shouldn't have eaten as much as I did. All in all, it was a good meal. I go there whenever I'm in that neighborhood. I miss the one that was on the East side before the 2nd Avenue subway construction started."

  • "It is always sweet to find a Manhattan restaurant that has a menu that is creative and tasty to one's palette and affordable."

  • "They had a kid menu, but the kid portion sizes are small. Kids ordered pasta and chicken fingers, the latter of which was overcooked and not very flavorful. The adult meals were pretty good. It was nice to know the ingredients are all fresh and wholesome. This is a restaurant on our back up list for returning."

  • "We were trying to squeeze in a good meal between Holiday events on July 4th, and Josie's was perfect. Delicious healthy food, and our waiter got us in and out quickly without making us feel rushed."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at Josie's very much. The food was delicious, with very innovative sauces and use of vegetables and fruits. The service was quick and attentive."

  • "I like the menu selection tho i wish they had more specials. Comfortable and comfortable noise level. you can actually have a conversation though it was full. Good wine."

  • "Although conveniently located near Beacon Theater, the interior seemed diner-like and the menu while having decent choices ... The food was not even diner quality ... Bland without and flavoring or what you would expect eating in NYC. Best part focaccia bread. Should have went to Hummus Place across the street instead !"

  • "Nice place and I'm sure others may like it. My food -- the grilled chicken -- was just very bland / bad tasting."

  • "I went to a show at The Beacon Theater on my own and was looking for a Vegetarian Option given that I primarily prefer Vegetarian Options. The menu is diverse to make both vegan/vegetarians and meat eaters options as well. The added convenience it's right around the corner from The Beacon Theater. Make sure to make reservations because it appears to be a popular spot. My only critique is that I ordered wine and it was a small glass, in the future I will probably order a cocktail."

  • "Went for Sunday brunch and were the only ones there. It was delicious with lots of menu options. We had the organic blueberry pancakes and southwest burrito. We definitely left full and happy. :)"

  • "Our "foodie" nieces, visiting from England, loved it. It's consistently on target with good veggie options(one of them is veggie) as well as fabulous choices for the rest of us."

  • "Though I often have 1 million things to do, I really wanted to make room in my schedule to praise Josie's restaurant for a wonderful Father's Day experience! We opted for the prix fixe and each one of the three of us, my friend, his daughter, and I, were delighted and completely satisfied with our food choices. I had the filet mignon and it was perfection! My friend loved his pork chops, and his daughter, her salad. I had to taste of my friend's squash soup and it was amazing! We shared an excellent red wine and all opted for the ice cream pie with graham cracker crust. Yummy! We must go back there more often! And to boot, it didn't break the bank!"

  • "Josie's is perfect for us neighborhood vegetarians and pescatarians, and it's a place where meat-eaters seem pretty happy, too. I was last there pre-concert on Thursday and had perfect, sushi-grade, beautiful tuna in a salad. Presentation lovely. Salad got boring, tuna not. My friend tried the all-natural turkey meatballs with angel hair pasta. Though it was a huge entree, she said it was only so-so. There is also a butternut squash pasta dish that is fabulous. I'll be back, every hopeful."

  • "Josie's most compelling feature is its location on the UWS and it is large so you can usually get a table. Food is pretty average, and the menu doesnt change often. Omelettes and salads are ok, but nothing memorable. Casual place for lunch or brunch and if you're into organic food, that is a plus."

  • "I have eaten here on many occasions, but this time the food that I ordered was bland, as was the food of my partner's. "

  • "While the food was good it was in my estimation over priced. Such as three small dumpling appetizer for $9, feta and few veggie omelet for about $14 and salmon lunch plate special for $20.50 with a small bit of salmon, scoop of sweet potato mashed and some broccoli with no special treatment. But the soup was delicious and not too badly priced for $5. The pricing may be better for dinner, I think same menu applies not just for lunch. Hopefully the portions grow some though."

  • "As always, the portions at Josie's are filling, and the food is good. I think that they could be more imaginative in the entrees. For instance in the veggie meatloaf, instead of bok choi, they could have sauteed cabbage or something that is a little tastier. The same for some of the other dishes. It is good home cooking on the whole."

  • "I love Josie's. The food is always good and the service is friendly. One of my very favorite neighborhood go-to restaurants."

  • "Waiter was absent when he should have been attentive. Food has gone down hill this past year. Kinda boring menu. Needs new items."

  • "We chose Josie's because it was right around the corner from the theater we were going to. The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing, but the tables are uncomfortably crowded together. Although there is a full bar, there was only one Chardonnay choice by the glass and they couldn't make a blended drink at all. Appetizers were tasty and hot which was lucky because we didn't get offered bread until after the appetizers came. I was looking forward to the "Shrimp Un-Fried rice", until it arrived. The veggies may have been fresh, as advertised, but they were diced into such tiny pieces, I couldn't identify if it was actually bok choy. The rice wasn't cooked through, so it was crunchy, and the shrimp had a strong bbq type sauce on it. "

  • "Went with a friend and luckily got a corner table and it wasn't too crowded (very rainy night) so the noise wasn't too bad. I had the shrimp and rice and my friend had the pork chop - both were excellent. Since it wasn't crowded, we didn't need to rush and so it was a lovely evening all around."

  • "First, Thank you for holding/honoring our reservation even though we were 45 minutes. Apps-ginger grilled calamari & roasted beet salad...entrees-grilled pork chop & shrimp 'un-fried' rice. Thai chili-seared shrimp was not at all spicy as expected and way to much brown rice for the "un-fried" rice dish; delicious, but not spicy. Everything else was AMAZING. Informed by server that all bottled wine was 20% off on Tuesdays, enjoyed a bottle of Wild Rock Pinot Noir. "

  • "There were way too many people. I suppose the management wants to make as much money as possible so they put far too many tables in there. You can't have a private conversation. The people they placed us next to were coughing over everything and the bathrooms were filthy. I will never go there again."

  • "the food is consistently good and fresh. the potato broccoli dumplings are delicious and i could eat a whole bowl of them. my only complaint is that the service is inconsistent and tends to be slow."

  • "We had a wonderful Brunch..........delicious Bloody Marys/Tuna burgers prepared to perfection. Our waitress was incredibly kind and acomodating despite the very busy holiday crowd. Every effort was made to serve timely, beautifully prepared and incredibly fresh fare."

  • "Josie's is an easy go-to where the food and service are consistently good. It's also a sure bet that it will have something for even the pickiest eaters. "

  • "Josies has become the standard in our neighborhood for good, healthy and tasty food without the usual stigmas associated with healthy food. And when the food is very good and the focus of the dining (or lunch) experience is the menu, then all other factors take second place in evaluating this eatery. Consistency is the biggest problem to a restaurant, and Josies consistency is second to none. Whatever entree you three weeks ago, is prepped and served the same way! This is rare, and the closest thing to perfection that you can ask for from strangers. And one the most gratifying factors of Josies is when you leave the restaurant. You've eaten well, healthy and flavorful. It doesn't get better than that."

  • "Good American food oriented towards healthy and vegetarian meals, although there's meat and chicken on the menu. It can feel a bit cramped when they're busy, as tables are close together. The potato/broccoli dumplings are delicious. A great neighborhood place."

  • "Josie's special scrambled eggs were rubbery , overcooked and dry. In contrast the home fries were undercooked and greasy . Service was extremely ho hum and slow . This restaurant is a shadow of the vibrant and perfectionistic place that it was in the early 2000's. I went back there for nostalgia but ended up feeling like I was eating wood in a cold and unfriendly place .Yuck . Folks, get it together!!"

  • "I was meeting friends before a show at the Beacon. It was great that we weren't rushed to order our meals as we were waiting for a friend who was about an hour late. My friend ordered a burger "medium" and it was served with a pulse. She sent it back & and told the waitress it could be done "well". We were surprised when someone else brought it back out in about 2 minutes. Still had a pulse. At that point, she didn't want anything else to eat & the waitress was great taking away the burger, leaving the fries and not charging us for it. On the other hand, the turkey burger had a nice flavor to it & the white sangria was excellent!"
