Diner Reviews
  • "Restaurant is far too noisy. Chicken very tasty. Apple dessert too doughy Service mediocre"

  • "I found out about Josie's through a Food and Wine show for Viking appliances years ago and I always said I would go to her restaurant based on the food I tried and I finally made it. The food was fantastic. I had the Wild Boar and my husband had the Bison Burger, both were wonderful. I can't wait to come back and will drive the hour drive again soon... It was well worth it."

  • "Menu is tired. Food was bland and our waiter pompous."

  • "I'd heard Josie was very good, so I had high hopes. I would say the food was spotty. I had the fish special of the evening, a winner. I began with a standard butter-lettuce salad, which they serve with grapefruit sections (delicious) and burrata (totally extraneous). My friend ordered chicken, which was dry, and my husband ordered fusilli, which he said tasted as if it had come out of a box The brightest spot was the key lime pie dessert. It is served as an individual round and was oh-so-tasty. The wine list was impressive, but way too expensive. We had brought our own, for the $25 corkage fee."

  • "I was traveling through Santa Monica on business and made a reservation completely from the great reviews Josie received from OpenTable and Yelp. The reviews were spot on - we loved it! The people we hosted from LA had never been there but told us they would definitely add it to their list of favorites. The wait staff was very experienced and helpful, the bar drinks were well made, and the food was delicious. We didn't realize one of our guests was vegan beforehand, but they were able to make a dish that was superb for him. Since I was from out of town, I was nervous about the restaurant when we drove up, since the exterior doesn't look like an upscale dining experience, but that changes once you enter. Four thumbs up from all of us!"

  • "Was excited to try Josie after seeing positive ratings and reviews. Unfortunately the food was just average. General lack of harmonious flavors, poorly constructed dishes, disappointing and flavorless dessert. Service was awkward; waiter featured the specials twice because he forgot he told us the first time. There are many better restaurants than Josie, especially for the price."

  • "Quiet, accessible, wonderful food with great service, this is a very special restaurant."

  • "Service was terrific as always. Very dsappointed in Valentine's dinner. Entree selections seemed nothing special from menu choices we'd seen & had @ this restaurant before. We know portions are generally modest, but the dishes we ordered seemed particularly minuscule. High price not warranted this night. No selection choices for desert and having been served on one plate....mini-bites when only one of us liked chocolate which was 90% of what was ON that plate...just wasn't what we anticipated! Would have been much happier with normal menu & normal prices.....@ $110/per person this holiday meal was truly disappointing."

  • "For dietary reasons, at home we are not big meat eaters. When dining out, however, we do not stick to our usual affairs...and wow, does Josie's do meat well! The quail appetizer was tender and perfect and the special short ribs with a dark kale-like greens and mashed potatoes hit all the old-home town yearnings. The seafood eaters at the table left no scallop or salmon coquettes behind. Our first-time guests learned what we meant when we said " You can't go to Josie's without ending with the chocolate bread pudding." Everything was so tasty, we had no room left....so we left with a few homemade truffles to eat later at home...We do miss the amuse bouche quiche...how sad, it was a treat for so long from this restaurant."

  • "Josie and her staff are top notch and we had excellent short ribs, close to excellent scallops, and fantastic buffalo burger. Same with very high quality first courses and a top notch bread pudding. Cheese course selections were quite good, but frankly skimpy, especially for sharing which we did. But what's with the wine list? Cheaper but not great wines and very high priced very good to excellent. We had the Hartcourt chard and superb, but where are the wines between 70 and 110?? Seems to be a set up, to get the wine that matches the quality of the food you have to buy over $100. You have done and could do better."

  • "This is my second night @ Josie. My mama, who lives in the neighborhood, has, I think been many times. I love the location. I love the feel inside. I love the loveliness of the servers and the hostess. I love the food. It was delightful, truly. Last time I made a special request to be close to the door, as my mom walks with a cane these days. They were very accomodating. I forgot to ask this time, but am certain that they would have been equally accomodating. I consider the food exceptional, and the price in fact quite reasonable."

  • "With all the restaurants in LA to choose from, we decided on Josie as it's been on our "must try" list for years, and just have never been. Everything was perfect, from amazing menu choices, flavors, wine pairings and of course the impeccable service. Saturday the 15th was also a great choice, as it was more quiet. Highly recommend Josie!"

  • "This place had me spending 300 dollars for two people on Valentine's Day. The food was OK, but wayyyyyyy overpriced. I will not be coming back here. The presentation and flavors were just OK like I said. They also overcooked the Bass order."

  • "Josie is a really great restaurant. No matter how many tables are filled, one can still hear each other speak. You can have a conversation! The service is prompt, not in your face, and all the staff are very informed. The menu is different than any other top notch restaurant. Wonderful pairings and combinations. And frequently one is brought an amuse bouche before you've even ordered a drink. So your hunger is abated whileyou ponder the menu. I love this place."

  • "All was excellent - food and ambience and service!"

  • "110 per person...you get...amuse bouche....app...entre...shared desert.... wait a minute?...$110...so, the little app is what...$30?...the small entre is what...$60?...the shared desert is what.......$20? terrible rip off, and add extra insult when it was plus $15 if you had the foi gras appetizer! The food is good here, but two people can go any other night and have a meal for $150, so why is the prix fixe $110 per person?. Might have been okay if a cocktail or wine had been provided....nope. Charging these kind of "Craft" prices ( they back it up) and delivering small portions with an upcharge has unfortunately caused us to remove Josie ( where we have dined several times) off our list. Shame. Provide value please, happy to pay for it."

  • "This has been my favorite restaurant for years and on Friday night I was sadly disappointed not only by the food but the service. They changed the menu and no longer have the tangine of short ribs which was my favorite. I ordered the NY steak from the restaurant week menu and it was so tough I couldn't even chew it. The waiter didn't come back to check until everyone else was done with their steak and my whole steak was still on my plate. I was also disappointed in the butternut squash soup for restaurant week, not the same as it always is with the apple in the middle. Definitely not worth the $55 we paid for each meal. The drinks and service were much better at Next Door! I will not go back again."

  • "the LADine program was going on on this Friday, and the restaurant was in full mode to process guests in and out as soon as possible. In particular the NY Strip offered on the menu (with a $10 premium) was average at best and overcooked. Best part of the meal was the desert. Restaurant somewhat over rated based on our experience that particular evening."

  • "One could hardly wish for a better menu or for better cooking. The decor is very classy and harmonious, at complete odds with the Pico Boulevard neighborhood in which the restaurant is located. Also, each suggested wine pairing on the evening's menu was spot-on. Josie certainly has its act together as a high-level dining experience. Saying that, I must add that while the wait staff served everything correctly, each member was at the polar end of being convivial. Not formal, starchy service -- just impersonal and detached -- like a well-trained robot."

  • "Without too much detail the food for the most part was very good. If you're the adventurous type stay away from the elk. It was poorly prepared although it's flavor profile was pretty good. The decor and ambiance of the restaurant was very nice unfortunately the service didn't match. From missing the champagne flute and not replacing the glass to struggling to order a second bottle of wine to actually getting ice in the ice water the waiter seemed very disinterested in our party. They also substituted the year of the second wine we ordered yet charged us the same price for a newer vintage. The attire of the patrons was business casual yet the manager was clad in jeans and a sweater. Our experience was underwhelming."

  • "Faux gourmet with high prices to match but food that is not so special at this restaurant. Choices are limited if you don't prefer pancetta or bacon in the main dishes. Fair presentation."

  • "Josie is a low-key, civilized restaurant. We read reviews and decided to make a reservation and try them out. We dined on a Thursday night and the room was only about 20% full, so the noise level was wonderfully conducive to conversation. The waiter was adequate, but a bit abrupt in his personal manner--this is just personality, not the character of the service in general. We had the endive salad ( above average, but not inspired), the quail appetizer ( wonderful), the fish special (barramundi-- wonderful), and the elk (which came out like a hockey puck). There are a lot of really good things going on at Josie, but there were also too many details that fell through the cracks for me to want to return."

  • "We don't come often enough. It's always a pleasure to be there."

  • "The chef and kitchen staff seem committed to providing a great dining experience, NOT because it fits into a good business model but because they want to provide well prepared fresh food to their customers.. It's what they like doing. That extra effort, the extra time in preparation, all translate into the final product and you can taste it. The dining room has a relaxed formalness to it, you realize immediately that you are in a "grown-up" setting, no kids running around, no loud drinkers. The result is that the room is QUIET, no blasting music, no TV's streaming endless sports shows. This is a place where you can actually catch your breath, settle down and enjoy a great meal."

  • "The food was very good, but the service was rather slow which was particularly surprising as it was a very quiet night. Overall though it was good and I will likely give it another try sometime."

  • "We always love to go to Josies. But this time getting a reservation was so much easier with Open Table. This is a gem of a restaurant, small, elegant and intimate. One can hear the conversation around the table and the clientele are well dressed and well mannered. We have so many restaurants to choose from in LA and this is one of the best. The food never disappoints, the wine list is very good and the service is attentive and not intrusive. There are many other far more publicized and popular restaurants around town but none which give such a warm and wonderful experience."

  • "The restaurant used to be on of our haunts... but this last trip - the food descriptions were inspired, but the food was not. The wait staff was inattentive, the host was less then a host. It might have felt a bit nicer if anyone seemed to be happy we were there. We eat there 3 or 4 times a year, but i do not think we will go back."

  • "Josie's remains one of the exceptional restaurants in Los Angeles with the relaxed ambiance of the west side. The perfect place to celebrate a special occasion with my foodie friends. Thank you, Josie! Your commitment to exceptional quality is appreciated."

  • "The Wednesday farmers' market menu is always outstanding, and it's a great deal at $35 for three courses. The wine pairing is expensive but really interesting and the portions are generous."

  • "We choose to sit in the Bar area next to the fireplace. it is a quiet area and excellent for conversation. Service is excellent - waiter, bus persons- very attentive Menu varied enough for everyone. One or more of us had the squash soup, salad, steak and elk. All were exceptional Good choices for dessert. Adequate wine list"

  • "Friends from Arizona wanted to meet us for dinner at a "halfway" point. I presented two selections, and they picked Josie. We had a nice half bottle of Qupe chardonnay while waiting for our friends. Three of us had the persimmon salad, which was quite delicious. The two ladies opted for the New York steak, which were perfectly prepared and both tender and juicy. The men had duck breast and pappardelle pasta with duck, respectively. Both were enjoyed immensely. The wine list was impressive. We asked for a recommendation for a full-bodied cabernet, which resulted in a great bottle of a 2010 Honig cabernet, probably a more perfect match with the steaks, but still worked well with the richness of the duck. Each enjoyed a different dessert."

  • "Friendly reception, attentive waitperson, and good food. While the food was good, it was not exceptional. I had the pumpkin squash soup and the duck breast. Nothing wrong with it at all, but I would not expect less from any decent restaurant. My friend ordered a salmon starter and Pappardelle with duck as a main course. He didn't care for the starter too much but said his pasta was very good."

  • "After the discovery of Josie's world, The felted, the structure of the room and the decoration transports us into a warm universe. Also the dishes and the wines proposal being rich and quality makes for a memorable romantic moment. I recommend this restaurant for those seeking voluptuousness in the mythical city of Santa Monica. Real contrast between modern city and place respecting French traditions."

  • "A very nice atmosphere. The food was excellent, as were the drinks. The wine list, however, is very pricey making a choice for a decent bottle difficult. We settled for glasses instead! Our waiter, although very efficient, was not very pleasant, i.e. never smiled or offered any comments regarding our food, etc."
    Dined on 7/27/2013
  • "Food was more than decent but given the spread of amazing restaurants in LA, about 30% overpriced for each dish. The restaurant itself was just strange-- aspiring to be an upscale french dining room but lacking both the elegance or coziness that could make it work; felt like the dentist's waiting room version of a 5 star restaurant. Also, our waiter was just OUT OF IT and would disappear for long periods of time and had strange/condescending reactions to anything we said."
