Diner Reviews
  • "I was staying at Massanutten and was surprised to find the charming Joshua Wilton House a short 20 minutes away. The food is flavorful without being pretentious and everything tasted fresh. The cocktails were fine but the starters (fried risotto stuff squash blossoms and short rib filled ravioli) and entrees (sea scallops and huge pork chop) more than made up for it. It's in a great converted Victorian era house and very quiet with light music playing over the speakers. I would definitely return and would order the same again but would maybe have my pork cooked for an extra minute. The server was nice, personable, and helpful but I did wait a bit longer than I wanted to here and there. Overall: charming and delicious."

  • "We had an excellent meal here -- party of three, all happy with most everything served. The plates have gotten less fussy and over-busy, with more emphasis on quality ingredients and the right accents. Particularly excellent were the mussels, the duck, and the pavlova. Ours was a meal worthy of the house's grand, traditional setting (front room to the right of the entry hall). Service was able and attentive, reception warm and ready. We have come here for decades, and I'd say the restaurant is presently at the acme of its history."

  • "We stayed the weekend and enjoyed the entire experiance The breakfast only served to guest was exceptional The diner chef used top quality ingredients and served a tasty meal But with too many flaws to be concidered exceptional The venison was raw I did request it be a bit more rare than medium But it was raw Tasty but raw The appetizers were good but a bit clunky The creme brûlée was ok but the top burnt slightly Over all I would go back for the service and attentiveness of both the entire staff The have a decent wine list nice stems and their wines are stored and served properly Expect a good meal with great service but not a five star dining experiance Price ing was fair across the board"

  • "This was our third visit, this time for our anniversary. It is about an hour and fifteen minute drive from Lexington but well worth the trip. We have some 3 and maybe a 4-star or two restaurants here but nothing that comes close to the Joshua Wilton House. Everything about it is first class. We will return again!"

  • "We selected this restaurant from the internet based on the photos, description, menu, and location. We were scheduled to appear in a Civil War reenactment event on Saturday at Grand Caverns and decided to enjoy our stay by spending Friday night in Harrisonburg. We greatly enjoyed oysters for appetizers, Barren Ridge merlot, pork chop dinner, soft shell crab special dinner, and creme brulee for dessert. Our waiters were professional, friendly, and timely. The hostess was friendly, engaging, and efficient. We will definitely dine at the Joshua Wilton House restaurant when we are in Harrisonburg in the future."

  • "Excellent meal and service. Our party of six (6) agreed that it was one of the best dining experiences we've had anywhere. We all travel extensively and will highly recommend the Joshua Wilton House to others. Although we had some difficulty getting to the restaurant causing us to be 20 minutes late for our reservation(i.e. - Mapquest does not refer to Cantrell Ave. as now being named Martin Luther King nor were we not aware of Main St. being one-way going north at Courthhouse Sq.) the staff was still very accommodating upon our arrival. We'll all be back again! "

  • "Beautiful Inn & restaurant on main road in Harrisonburg, VA. We were impressed from the moment we pulled up. We had a wonderful table in a small windowed alcove. Specialty drinks were excellent & fun. Meal was superb. The salads were delicious, filet mignon melted in your mouth. Others had scallops and salmon they said were cooked to perfection. Desserts were small but also delicious. Wait staff was also excellent. Very formal and professional. Can't wait to go again."

  • "We were very pleased to find such a wonderful Easter brunch. The food, service and setting all exceeded our expectations. The staff was friendly and helpful. We are planning to return and try the dinner menu."

  • "Easter Brunch was amazing. I had the beef tenderloin over quinoa for an appetizer...melt in your mouth delicious. For my main meal I had the salmon. Also wonderful, and finally for dessert I chose the lemon ricotta cheese cheescake. I opted for the wine pairing with the meal and it was well worth it. Each wine selection paired well with my choices. Their were four in our party and we all tried something different. No one was dissappointed. I will definitely be back and tell others about it."

  • "When visiting my daughters at James Madison University, one of the perks is to also have a wonderful dinner at the Joshua Wilton House. Saturday's dinner did not disappoint. Most often when dining I stick to my own favorites, but I am not afraid to try something new when I go to the Joshua Wilton House. This time it was the brandazzo (sp?) with spinach risotto. It was excellent. The filet mignon was wonderful also, as always. "

  • "The restaurant is located in a very elegant old house. The food was not only as elegant looking as the restaurant but the taste was perfect. Can be compared with great restaurants around the world. It is perfect for special ocasions and the service was excelent. Definitely one of the best restaurants i have tried in US. Worth to visit."

  • "I dined here for what the show "Parks and Recreation" would call 'Treat Yo Self Day.' It was the best dining experience I have ever had in Harrisonburg. Amazing food, polite and attentive waiter, and a beautiful environment. Worth every single penny. Once I walked outside, I called a friend and recommended it."

This was my first time dining at Joshua Wilton House and I thank the staff for providing my wife and I a memorable dining experience on our 8th wedding anniversary that we will not forget. • "We dined as a family group of six adults for a special occasion. Personalized service in the lounge as well as the dining room - creative cocktails, nice winelist, innovative food choices, sophisticated ambiance. It will be our first choice when we are back in the area. Hopefully, the salad wiith grilled figs will still be on the menu. Our group also enjoyed the scallops, duck, grilled pork chop with mushroom risotto, and filet mignon entrees. All were wonderfully prepared."

  • "In town on business, and we're told this was the "only" place to go by a local colleague. Wonderful service from the moment we arrived. Terrific food and ambiance in a very nice setting in an old home. Quite a gem for a relatively small town. Had the duck breast on top of a hash of sweet potatoes and celery root. Fantastic! Wish I lived closer - would be there every week."

  • "Food was excellent. Noticed the prices are more accessible (a salad $$10 is the same as in a dive bar as to price, yet awesome-er. The dessert was not to my liking, but I'm not a fan of dessert anyway. Typos courtesy of phone not ignorance btw."

  • "Very awesome for a special night out for middle class folks that couldn't normally frequent here. Money saved was money well spent for this awesome dining experience."

  • "As an anniversary dinner, our expectations were fully met or exceeded. The beautiful setting and superb service has no equal in Harrisonburg. We dined during the downtown restaurant week and felt we got an excellent value. The crab cake and hanger steak were both delicious. Serving sizes were great, not overwhelming yet plenty. I don't have to feel too guilty about eating too much."

  • "The food was wonderful, our server was professional and personable and the atmosphere was beautiful. We can't afford to make this our regular place to eat out but it's great for a special occasion. We would definitely recommend to others. Thank You!"

  • "I am a regular here. Best dining experience in Harrisonburg."

  • "Third time dining here. We only had the option of the prix fixe, much to our chagrin. Food was overall delicious, but the limited selection left us wanting more. Our wine glasses were left to empty a couple of times (the wine bottle is removed from the table, requiring the waiter to fill the glasses - rather frustrating). Host staff was pleasant and capable as usual."

  • "Very much enjoyed all courses of our meals, everything was done to perfection and served at the proper temperature. Our waiter was very attentive and tended to all our needs and more. The steak was cooked perfectly, medium rare, and was easily cut with a butter knife, all food from appetizer to desert were absolutely delicious with ample portion sizes."

  • "My wife and I had a fabulous Valentine's meal at the J.W. House. The crab bisque was rich and delicious with tender hunks of crab meat. The scallops were cooked to perfection, and the cassoulet was the best I've had outside of France. The service was excellent."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The four course menu was good and I like the idea of a fixed menu but I did not walk away feeling as thought I got my $75 worth. The food was tasty but not really "special". I could order it at any quality restaurant on any night. The depth of flavors and the complexity of the dishes was just not there. The filet was top quality meat though as were all the ingredients. Everything was fresh."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We were there for our first Valentine's Day celebration as a married couple. The waiter, who I assume was new (as he could pronounce neither "ratatouille" nor "gravlax") seemed to forget all about us after dropping off our coffee and placing down the dessert menus, disappearing entirely for a good half hour plus. If we had wanted coffee with our dessert, that would have been impossible. Since the snow was coming down fast, a bit of speed would have been appreciated, as we were anxious to return home before the snow became a problem. In addition, the wild bass special was not fresh - it tasted quite fishy, and the rack of lamb had an over-reduced sauce and came with lousy, mealy potato wedges. We were not terribly impressed."

  • "What a great experience! Food was great from beginning to end. Restaurant is in an old historical house, very Victorian. Great atmosphere, great service on a busy night, and we made it through dinner with a 4 year old and 20 mo old in tow. Menu was diverse, and delicious. Atlantic salmon was WOW, and scallops were perfect. Great night and restaurant, will be back if out this way again."
