Diner Reviews
  • "Every bite was an event to savor. The food was exquisite. The service was wonderful and delightful. Eating there was an experience not to be rushed but enjoyed thoroughly. "

  • "I dined here for what the show "Parks and Recreation" would call 'Treat Yo Self Day.' It was the best dining experience I have ever had in Harrisonburg. Amazing food, polite and attentive waiter, and a beautiful environment. Worth every single penny. Once I walked outside, I called a friend and recommended it."

  • "An outstanding dining experience. This was my first time dining at Joshua Wilton House and I thank the staff for providing my wife and I a memorable dining experience on our 8th wedding anniversary that we will not forget. Awesome service, outstanding food and beverage selections, and great ambiance. I recommend highly to friends and family. Thanks again."

  • "A quiet, romantic setting in an historic Inn. Great place to spend a special occasion and enjoy uniquely prepared cuisine."

  • "We dined as a family group of six adults for a special occasion. Personalized service in the lounge as well as the dining room - creative cocktails, nice winelist, innovative food choices, sophisticated ambiance. It will be our first choice when we are back in the area. Hopefully, the salad wiith grilled figs will still be on the menu. Our group also enjoyed the scallops, duck, grilled pork chop with mushroom risotto, and filet mignon entrees. All were wonderfully prepared."

  • "In town on business, and we're told this was the "only" place to go by a local colleague. Wonderful service from the moment we arrived. Terrific food and ambiance in a very nice setting in an old home. Quite a gem for a relatively small town. Had the duck breast on top of a hash of sweet potatoes and celery root. Fantastic! Wish I lived closer - would be there every week."

  • "Food was excellent. Noticed the prices are more accessible (a salad $$10 is the same as in a dive bar as to price, yet awesome-er. The dessert was not to my liking, but I'm not a fan of dessert anyway. Typos courtesy of phone not ignorance btw."

  • "Very awesome for a special night out for middle class folks that couldn't normally frequent here. Money saved was money well spent for this awesome dining experience."

  • "As an anniversary dinner, our expectations were fully met or exceeded. The beautiful setting and superb service has no equal in Harrisonburg. We dined during the downtown restaurant week and felt we got an excellent value. The crab cake and hanger steak were both delicious. Serving sizes were great, not overwhelming yet plenty. I don't have to feel too guilty about eating too much."

  • "The food was wonderful, our server was professional and personable and the atmosphere was beautiful. We can't afford to make this our regular place to eat out but it's great for a special occasion. We would definitely recommend to others. Thank You!"

  • "I am a regular here. Best dining experience in Harrisonburg."

  • "Third time dining here. We only had the option of the prix fixe, much to our chagrin. Food was overall delicious, but the limited selection left us wanting more. Our wine glasses were left to empty a couple of times (the wine bottle is removed from the table, requiring the waiter to fill the glasses - rather frustrating). Host staff was pleasant and capable as usual."

  • "Very much enjoyed all courses of our meals, everything was done to perfection and served at the proper temperature. Our waiter was very attentive and tended to all our needs and more. The steak was cooked perfectly, medium rare, and was easily cut with a butter knife, all food from appetizer to desert were absolutely delicious with ample portion sizes."

  • "My wife and I had a fabulous Valentine's meal at the J.W. House. The crab bisque was rich and delicious with tender hunks of crab meat. The scallops were cooked to perfection, and the cassoulet was the best I've had outside of France. The service was excellent."

  • "The four course menu was good and I like the idea of a fixed menu but I did not walk away feeling as thought I got my $75 worth. The food was tasty but not really "special". I could order it at any quality restaurant on any night. The depth of flavors and the complexity of the dishes was just not there. The filet was top quality meat though as were all the ingredients. Everything was fresh."

  • "We were there for our first Valentine's Day celebration as a married couple. The waiter, who I assume was new (as he could pronounce neither "ratatouille" nor "gravlax") seemed to forget all about us after dropping off our coffee and placing down the dessert menus, disappearing entirely for a good half hour plus. If we had wanted coffee with our dessert, that would have been impossible. Since the snow was coming down fast, a bit of speed would have been appreciated, as we were anxious to return home before the snow became a problem. In addition, the wild bass special was not fresh - it tasted quite fishy, and the rack of lamb had an over-reduced sauce and came with lousy, mealy potato wedges. We were not terribly impressed."

  • "It was a lovely evening at Joshua Wilton House. Food was amazing and service was prompt. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "What a great experience! Food was great from beginning to end. Restaurant is in an old historical house, very Victorian. Great atmosphere, great service on a busy night, and we made it through dinner with a 4 year old and 20 mo old in tow. Menu was diverse, and delicious. Atlantic salmon was WOW, and scallops were perfect. Great night and restaurant, will be back if out this way again."

  • "We have come up from Staunton every year since 2003 to celebrate our anniversary. Our expectations are high and we have never been disappointed. We have been a few other times with friends and family and have always enjoyed it."

  • "You don't need the first course to become satisfied with the quantity of food. Try the JWH salad or date salad, both very good. My salmon had seared with a crusty side that was superb. The pesto orzo on which it was placed was immensely enjoyable."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner but I had made plans with the staff to bring special recognition to the couple who we hosted for their wedding celebration with something special with their dessert. It did not happen. I had spoken to staff that afternoon to make sure they were aware of the celebration. Our waiter did not offer any specials when he approached our table to take our order so we asked for them. And 2 of us ordered specials! Overall, it was still a very nice evening. The Wilton House food never disappoints us but I was disappointed that the special recognition was not given. I did not say anything because I did not want to embarrass our guests. We are regular customers and we will visit again soon."

  • "My best friends daughter is attending JMU (she is a freshman). While in VA we picked her up for dinner and took her to the Joshua Wilton House. The restaurant is beautiful, the service was fantastic and the food was fabulous. It was definitely a few hundred steps above the college dining hall food she's been eating. I would recommend this place for a special occasion or a romantic night out."

  • "I think the food at the Wilton House is usually better than it was last night. They offered a six course special for New Year's Eve. It really wasn't a six course dinner and the selection was limited. I will go back again and again, but probably not on New Year's Eve."

  • "Have always loved the food but disappointed that we had requested a special table and was placed in a noisy room and it was cold in the room. Our request was not acknowledged in any way. We use the restaurant for special occasions frequently and special accommodations were not taken into consideration. We could have changed our times so that we could have had a better table."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by a couple we had met a few weeks prior to New Years Eve who live in the area. They knew that we were driving from New Jersey to Louisiana and would be spending New Years Eve in Harrisonburg, VA and thought we would like a really nice place to say goodbye to 2013. Wow, did they suggest a great place. They had a 6 course meal which was delicious. My husband and I chose different items for three of the courses and we both raved about our choices. If I ever visit the area again, I will definitely pay another visit to this establishment."

  • "This was our first visit to Joshua Wilton House and we were greatly impressed by the quality of the food and loved the fact nearly all is locally supplied. Service was excellent and the atmosphere of the old dwelling was great. It's a great place to go for special meals, too expensive to dine frequently for our budget but was prices were still reasonable for quality of food, service, and surroundings. I'm sure I'll recommend this restaurant to others and hope to return myself."

  • "We booked a reservation and have no regrets. Exceptional service and food. My wife and I have dined at a number of "fine" restaurants in locations ranging from Seoul to Montreal to New York City and a host of locales in between but in terms of the food and the service this is one of the two best we have ever enjoyed--and the finest in the US."

  • "We wanted an elegant ambiance for my son's graduation and engagement dinner with family. The Joshua Wilton house was exactly what we were looking for! Excellent service and food. We would go again if ever back in the area!!! Fabulous!"

  • "We are regulars at this restaurant converted from a mansion into a B&B. By regulars I mean we go there on special occaisions since it is kind of pricey. Food is always great as is the service. We did book a table in one of the front rooms near a fireplace but were told upon arrival that they had a large party taking it up. While somewhat disappointed we still enjoyed a great dining experience as usual."

  • "my steak was wonderful my wifes fish was not very good the price was redicul;ious for what we had but the main problem was the service was horendous our waiter was training a guy and i sure hope he doesn't turn out like our waiter we have to get someone elses attention everytime we needed soemthing when we arrived we were seated and no one came to oofer drinks or anything for a good 15 minutes and it only got worse from there"

  • "Though this is a third time I have dined at the Joshua Wilton House, the food never ceases to be wonderfully unique and tasty! However, the best part of my last two visits was the young man who waited on us. I had the same waitor for my last two visits, and his extremely kind, professional demeanor, knowledge of the menu and food, and special efforts made both my birthday visit with my hubby AND this recent visit with my friend extremely special outings!!! Outstanding food without outstanding service will cause food to lose a bit of it's flavor, and Joshua Wilton House has truly attained this aspect of great dining coupled with great service!"

  • "Service was great, food was tasty. Plenty of quality dishes. The tables are on top of each other so sometimes you feel like you are in someone else's conversation but it is still quaint and romantic."

  • "While staying at Skyland Resort on Skyline Drive we just had to drive down to Harrisonburg and have a meal at the wonderful Joshua Wilton House. We had been there several times and had high expectations and were not disappointed. The restaurant is part of a B&B and is located on the first floor of a beautiful old Victorian house in Historic Harrisonburg. The entire staff is terrific and the food is prepared with style and great care. Especially nice is you get to eat at your own pace with no one rushing you from one course to the next. Overall, worth the trip and we will be back."

  • "We live in Florida and visit Harrisonburg occasionally to see family. We think Joshua Wilton is the premier eatery in town and always make a point to have dinner there when in the city. Drinks, food and service are all outstanding. The chef does a marvelous job with unique creations, and we have found the service to be unfailing."

We felt welcomed in your establishment and will definitely be returning! The food was top notch and we couldn't have asked for a better meal. Thank you!!"
