A word from Joshu-ya Brasserie
Joshuya Brasserie was launched in 2011 by Rising Star Chef Jason Kwon from NYC. The brasserie offers two unique seasonal menus focusing on edo style sushi and California inspired tapas.

Current menu highlights include Day Boat Scallop Risotto, Braised Octopus, Monterey Bay Calamari, Hamachi Tartare, Kobe Steak Frites...

In addition to our seasonal brasserie menu, we also offer a bar menu, which features maki, tempura, gyoza and other traditional japanese sharing dishes.

  • "My recent dining experience at Joshu-ya was very good. My friend and I enjoyed the great food and friendly, attentive service. There is something on the menu for everyone. Sushi was inventive and contemporary, the non sushi items were prepared and presented with care and the staff was friendly, especially our server who was knowledgeable and sincere. I will definitely return. Dishes to try include the fries in duck fat, Kobe sliders were perfectly cooked with a hint of Kim chee (a perfect condiment), and we really loved the mussels with chorizo. Kudos to the staff for a fine evening!!"

  • "Our waiter was MIA throughout. We had to flag another waiter down, who said he would let ours know we were ready to order. Our server then came by a few minutes later with water, and told us he would come back to take our order. Another 10-15 minutes went by, when we finally flagged that 1st waiter down again, and asked him if someone would PLEASE take our order. He responded incredulously, "He hasn't taken your order yet?!" and was nice enough to then do so. All in all, it took 25 minutes before we could finally order, and that was only because we asked. TWICE. The food is good, but the poor service from our waiter was unexcusable. Obviously not all of the waitstaff is like this, because the guy who actually helped us was great."

  • "We were late to our 11.30 reservation; arr'ved at 12, the host was still busy setting tables and there were 5 flies happily roaming in the room and the host did nothing. There were a bunch of dead bugs on the rim of the window. The toilets are awfully dirty and the waitress sprayed an obscene amount of Lysol inside that made me worried when I took my child to the bathroom. The pricing of the menu is also ridiculous. They have the 3 samples for $40 option but if the 3 selections add up to less than $40, they charge you $40 anyways! Seared scallop risotto tasted good but the "risotto" brown rice was as hard as barley. The service was sparse, we could hardly flag down the waiter once they put down the food."

  • "I decided to order a house dish and opt out of sushi which was a HUGE mistake. I had to send the dish back and decided to get sushi which was well worth it! Although the sushi chefs were a little sloppy with their role making, the portion sizes and combinations were delicious! The patio is also a relaxing atmosphere especially as the sun was setting with the space heaters. Warning: the wait staff isn't the friendliest. "

  • "I took my boyfriend here for "date night." It was my second time going, and if I had ordered sushi the first time I went, I probably would have not come back. The food is good, but for the price it isn't anything special. A plus is that they accommodated me both times when I was late for my reservation and our waiter was great! He really knew his stuff. Though that is true joshu-ya is short staffed and both times we had an awkward experience waiting for a table and not getting a menu until asking. the food came out randomly Throughout dinner and the gyoza we ordered never came. Over all a nice evening but nothing special and probably won't go back now that I've tried most of the menu. "

  • "First time diner, and overall the food was good, the service so-so, though I think it mostly related to the slow kitchen, which led to a long drawn out dinner, and uneven timing on delivery of food items to the table (mine came 10 minutes before my other guest's dinner). The sushi was very good, the hamburger / roasted bone marrow sublime, and the soba noodles with pork belly average (pork was way overcooked and dried out, negating the beauty of the fattiness of pork belly). For dessert, we had the sesame creme brulee and it was very good. I'll likely give the restaurant one other shot and see how it goes."

  • "Service very slow and unfriendly and we had to keep getting up and fetching things (menus, soy sauce) ourselves from other unoccupied tables, or going to the staff behind the sushi counter to ask questions. Restaurant was almost empty so bad service hard to understand. Food good and nicely presented."

  • "As a request per my sister who was graduating, she wanted to dine in at Joshu-ya for a celebration lunch. We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and the host promptly got us a table. Due to the typing limit, I'll just get down to the nitty gritty. Food: Miso soup- Luke warm Bone-marrow Burger- Did not come with bone marrow, was told by server that they put a small salad to compensate for that, to me a bed of cheap greens is not equivalent to marrow Teriyaki Chicken- Cold Sushi- Arrived 50 minutes after ordering Service: Waited longer than 15 minutes to place order When marrow issue came up, server said" he was told to tell us that they take $4 off (not even trying to make up for their mistake) Overcharged for an unserved dessert "

  • "I booked Joshu-Ya based on high diner ratings, and sadly it was only "So-so". The biggest disappointment was the service level. The restaurant was not crowed when we arrived, and yet the waiter was unable to coordinate getting us drinks within ten minutes of each other. Seriously, a round of Ice tea, Coke, and waters isn't that hard when the restaurant is 1/3 full. Some arrived in 5 minutes, and others we had to ask a third time for. This lack of organization continued through apps and main entre.... Forgotten dishes that were "Coming right up" came 15 minutes after the rest of the food. So, I can not blame the kitchen given the experience on the drinks. Food was above average, but not "Great". Overall, It was ok. but I wont return."

  • "A wonderful pre-comedy show meal. A group of four went before a performance at zellerbach-which is walking distance from the restaurant.We shared some delicious fish tacos, and a lovely caprese salad with burrata cheese-not to be missed. The mussels were also delightful. Our nigiri was wonderful-rih Chutoro, Hirame, and Wild Aji! The chocolate cake and Creme brûlée finished us off and we were ready to get in some laughter. Remember to try some sake-the local organic sake and unfiltered sake were delicious!! An both are out of Berkeley!! Thanks so much to the delightful waitstaff who were so accommodating and knowledgable. We will be back soon!!"

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant. I selected it based on Open Table and Yelp reviews and it lived up to expectations. I asked for recommendations from the maître d' and our waiter. Based on the recommendations, we ordered the Kobe beef sliders, Hamachi tapas and one of the sushi rolls with tempura. Our waiter told us that would be more than enough food for 2 and it was. We could not finish all of it, but we wanted to. In short, the food was excellent, the service was excellent and I'm glad we had a reservation. When in Berkeley, we will make a beeline back to this restaurant. It's great."

It was a bit of a gamble, I was taking my 20 something daughter and niece so looking for something delicious, fresh and also appealing to younger people. We we all very pleased - sat outside under the heat lamp, food was fantastic and ambience had that "cool" factor the kids liked. Definitely recommend this place!"

  • "It has been years since I'd been to Joshu-ya. For whatever reason I had been reluctant to re-visit. However, going to an event near Cal it seemed like the perfect pre-event dinner restaurant. IT WAS. An easy walk to the event, and back again. (We found parking near the restaurant, perhaps only because it was early.) But Joshu-ya has its own parking. The sushi was outstanding, the service terrific (we had made a reservation) and our view of the waterfall mellowed things out despite the fact that we had miscalculated and arrived with only an hour to spare for dinner. It was enough. We'll be back!"

  • "The food was excellent! I ordered the porterhouse, spicy crunch roll-all delicious. A great fusion of Japanese and continental cuisine. My date and I finished with the tempura brownie and thr creme brulee....WOW! I know to save room for dessert for sure next time I come. Highly, highly recommend the creme brulee."

  • "This was our second visit. We had six people, having made a reservation through Open Table, which saved us having to wait in a line that went out the door. Last time I had a risotto with scallops that was wonderful. This time I had braised pork belly tacos which were very tasty. Unfortunately, along with the excellent food, the other consistency was the anemic service. We were seated quickly and asked for our drink orders. From then on the waiter was seldom seen and the wait for our food after ordering was way longer than just busy could explain."

  • "Some things were great, like the sashimi. Maybe the best I've ever had. The potatoes fried in duck fat were amazing, but stayed with us for many hours. My dinner companion's burger came out medium well instead of medium. The food didn't all come out at the same time. Some of the sushi was good but not great, while the mackerel nigiri was too salty to eat. Didn't get a chance to try the black sesame creme brulee, so would go back for the sashimi and that. Wait staff seemed like inexperienced students, although they were trying. Definitely make a reservation for dinner."

  • "The food was well presented and very tasty. This was our first time, having found Joshu-ya online when looking for a nearby place to eat before a Zellerbach performance. It was a Wednesday night and I didn't expect the restaurant to be as busy as it was. Our waiter was attentive, but not always around when we needed him. I expected some new takes on Japanese standards, which we got, but did not expect the risotto dish which was excellent. We'd happily go back."

  • "Another fantastic night out at Joshu-ya! This evening me and a good friend began with sushi. The succulent sashimi is not to be missed. The Chutoro is exceptional, and the Aji was a treat. Presentation was so detail oriented and gorgeous that it was hard to begin eating, but not so hard that we didn't. The new steak dish followed our sushi, and what a steak!! A bone in combination if filet mignonette and NY strip-how can you go wrong? It was absolutely bursting with flavor, thick and juicy, and enormous. At our gracious server's suggestion we finished our meal with the Panna Cotta, which was a treat. We so enjoyed every bit of our night. Thank you again Joshu-ya!"
