Diner Reviews
  • "We reserved a table in the back but no table was available there when we arrived so we had to sit in the front. Food was good. Service a bit annoying. We felt rushed out. People came over every two minutes asking if we wanted anything else."

  • "We basically ordered Tapas plus one sushi roll. The BBQ pulled pork was best., but everything was well done (as in "good")."

  • "Go for the fresh food if they haven't "run out" or "guess we haven't updated the menu with the changes." Service was horrible and by young, inexperienced, half wits."

  • "Definitely a great place to eat. There's a variety of prices, so don't let the first menu scare you."

  • "Some things were great, like the sashimi. Maybe the best I've ever had. The potatoes fried in duck fat were amazing, but stayed with us for many hours. My dinner companion's burger came out medium well instead of medium. The food didn't all come out at the same time. Some of the sushi was good but not great, while the mackerel nigiri was too salty to eat. Didn't get a chance to try the black sesame creme brulee, so would go back for the sashimi and that. Wait staff seemed like inexperienced students, although they were trying. Definitely make a reservation for dinner."

  • "The food was well presented and very tasty. This was our first time, having found Joshu-ya online when looking for a nearby place to eat before a Zellerbach performance. It was a Wednesday night and I didn't expect the restaurant to be as busy as it was. Our waiter was attentive, but not always around when we needed him. I expected some new takes on Japanese standards, which we got, but did not expect the risotto dish which was excellent. We'd happily go back."

  • "Another fantastic night out at Joshu-ya! This evening me and a good friend began with sushi. The succulent sashimi is not to be missed. The Chutoro is exceptional, and the Aji was a treat. Presentation was so detail oriented and gorgeous that it was hard to begin eating, but not so hard that we didn't. The new steak dish followed our sushi, and what a steak!! A bone in combination if filet mignonette and NY strip-how can you go wrong? It was absolutely bursting with flavor, thick and juicy, and enormous. At our gracious server's suggestion we finished our meal with the Panna Cotta, which was a treat. We so enjoyed every bit of our night. Thank you again Joshu-ya!"

  • "We decided to try Joshu-ya and were extremely impressed. The food was phenomenal. I highly recommend trying both the tartare and pork belly tacos. Both sushi rolls we ordered were fantastic as well. Great place for sharing and you will not leave hungry."

  • "If you have time and money, you should go good restaurant. If not, you should choose other options. If you expect best quality of service and taste of foods, you will be disappointed."

  • "My office-mates and I love this place, as does my family. The food is beautiful and fresh, and the service is impeccable. It's close to campus, but not so close that it's mobbed at lunch."

  • "This is my place to refill before a concert at CAL Performances. They' ve never let me down even when I was late (traffic) for more than 30 minutes. The tapas are delicious, the sushi are fresh, the service is friendly and very accommodating."

  • "What a meal!! I was absolutely blown away with everything my partner and I ate. Gem dishes that are not to be missed are the Hamachi Tartare, the Lamb Sliders, and the Sashimi Combination. The hamachi Tartare blew me away. The avocado, hamachi, and jalapeño sauce came together in a delicious party in my mouth. The sliders were rich and hearty with a delicious Greek yogurt sauce. The Sashimi was so fresh, thick cuts of melt in your mouth fish filets. Make sure to save room for dessert, as the Black Sesame Creme Brûlée is a treat! Service was also top notch! Everyone we interacted with was pleasant and attentive. I am already planning another visit to try more of their innovative and unique menu. Absolutely Fantastic!!"

  • "We had a 4:45 reservation for 5 people and one dog! Sat on the patio. uncomfortable chairs, but they have outdoor heat lamps :) Food and service very good. We had small plates not sushi. When it was time for us to leave and catch a performance at Cal, the line and wait was 1.5 hours! Great location in Berkeley, central, but just enough off of Telegraph to not be crazy!"

  • "The fish quality here was outstanding. We ordered an albacore tataki from the sushi bar as well as a hamachi tartar from the kitchen. They were both prepared differently (Japanese, French) which was a party for the taste buds. My friend loved her Rissoto, which was so pretty to look at. We loved everything and will be coming back to eat here soon."

  • "I ate here a few weekends ago with a friend for the first time, it was quite busy with people standing waiting for tables almost all night. The noise level was a bit high with a few groups of college kids, but still very cute restaurant with intimate seating areas. We loved our burgers and the sashimi was some of the best in the Bay. I would recommend to make a reservation in order to be seated promptly on busy nights. We are coming back to eat here to try other tapas on their ever changing menu."

  • "I had recently found this place on Open table while looking around for new places to eat in the East Bay and stumbled upon this hidden gem of a restaurant. We tried the Tapas sampler where we chose three different tapas items on the menu. We ate the Mussels con Chorizo which was very rich and tasty, the Hamachi Tarar which tasted great as well as beautifully plated, and pork belly tacos which were some of the best I have every eaten. In addition to great food, we were waited on by great service staff, who were very friendly and knowledgeable. I look forward to eating here again soon!"

  • "Their seafood is so fresh it is like it just came from the ocean. Delicious. Duck Confit Risotto, best duck I've ever had!"

  • "Mid-week dinner for two. Opted for the $45 3-dish (small plates) special. 'Spanish octopus' was disappointing in that we found very little octopus buried in a plethora of diced and pan-fried potatoes; potatoes meant to resemble octopus. The remaining two dishes were more honestly prepared and tasty. Service was in a shambles. One waiter was left to cover far too many chores, discharging most valiantly. Might be wise to appear before or after the 'dinner hour.'"

  • "My boyfriend and I were sat on time and enjoyed miso and hot sake to start. We ordered 3 sushi rolls, all delicious! We will be back!"

  • "Great place! Unfortunately they were out of many of the menu items we ordered. I expect that this was a temporary situation, however, and would gladly go back."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "The food was great. The service was OK. Our waiter showed up when he pleased and we didn't get one of our items we ordered until we asked for it three times and had already ordered dessert. Our waiter was more interested in the table full of college girls that were buying cheap, rather than the table full of adults that ordered everything on the menu and were willing to spend a lot of money..."

  • "All of the above plus extremely reasonably priced. You receive a lot for your money. Ambience - needs a lot of work. Dingy, restroom needs paint etc."

  • "Went out with my husband and 15 month old boy to this place during Berkeley restaurant week. The staff was friendly and helpful, brought us a bowl of rice to keep the little one entertained. Both my husband and I love miso soup and we thought that our complimentary soups were delightful, more flavorful and less salty than other places. The waiter gave us an extra round of soups as well! We had sushi, sashimi and a lamb burger (plus mochi and tiramisu). The burger was delicious and so was the sashimi salad (sesame-miso dressing). Some of the sushi sampler choices were a bit underwhelming (classical - tuna, salmon, mackrel) and some I did not like (raw scallop, ew). Classic rolls like caterpillar were great. Planning to return soon"

  • "We ate there on an uncharacteristically no-crowd night (maybe Tuesday night after 8:30 is the ticket). The pork sliders are amazing."

  • "Good food, but a bit spotty on the delivery. One person's entree (sushi) was forgotten and didn't show up until everyone else had finished. Their waiters should have been more on the ball, I think, given that the place was mostly empty. But it's a college town, so maybe that's to be expected. Otherwise we enjoyed it and had a very nice dinner."

  • "We had ktems off the small plates menu and the sushi menu. Food was very good. Ambiance is bare bones and service is just ok. But the food is solid."

  • "This was a great find, a mix of terrific sushi and sashimi and cooked western dishes done expertly. It was a delightful experience all around. Service was great and the pace of delivery of each item was terrific."

  • "This place has good reviews so we decided to give it a try and were not disappointed. We ordered from the tasting menu (choice of 2 small plates and 1 large for $40), every dish was excellent and the portions for the small plates were surprisingly large. We chose the Scallop Risotto, Scallop Cerviche, and the Gallegos Octopus (small plate menu), and the Mussels con Chorizo and Pork Belly Soba for our main courses. The setting is a bit funky, in a good way, and fitting for a UC Berkeley neighborhood, the service was friendly. The only drawback on our visit was the uneven pacing in the kitchen. The first dish/course took 20+ minutes to arrive, then the second and third dishes/courses arrived together. We will definitely return."

  • "On New Years Day, we had celebrated New Year Japanese family dinner there instead of cooking at home. The food was good, but they run out of items on the menu that evening. We were a little disappointed because some of our favorite Japanese items were not available. We had reservations for 9 people, but we had to wait almost 45 mins before they were able to seat us and they appear to be a little disorganized. Anyway, food was good from what we can get, but restaurant a little disorganized. We may try again on a non-holiday and see what happens. ."

  • "Went with the family for a post Christmas lunch. The $40 2 small plate and 1 large plate could easily feed 2 people. The service was good. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. We also had a few sushi rolls and they were very good. The only negative part of our lunch was that some items on the menu were not available. I guess we will have to go back to try those dishes in the near future. I would recommend this place to my friends."

  • "Had made a res for 8 coworkers for our holiday get together. The restaurant was not too busy, a few empty tables, but everything took over one hour to get even our appetizers or a bowl of miso soup. After tracking down someone to acknoledge us we finally got our water glasses refilled while we waited. Understand that places get busy and short staffed, but someone should have told us it would be one hour before we got our food, or brought out some edamami (which we had ordered) to tie us over. Food was very good, sushi rolss, sashimi were were fresh. The tempura was some of the best I have ever had. Really crispy and not greasy or soggy. everyone enjoyed their meal. I will definitely go back. Staff was apologetic afterwards."

  • "We went for tapas but since most had shellfish which my mother is allergic to, we went with sushi. The sushi boats are phenomenal! One bite and you know you have been served a high quality grade piece of fish. The colors in the presentation were dynamic. Not your average duplicate tasting bite within the same roll. Each slice had a unique look or flavor. Delicious!!!!! All soy is light sodium. Great outdoor seating as well."

  • "We had a lunch meeting at Joshu-ya and it was our first visit. Our party ordered the pulled-pork "samich", the chicken and pesto sandwich, Bento, and sushi. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was not very polished, but the guys were friendly. All of us commented on how nice they were. Our only complaint was that we chose Joshu-ya because they're listing said they had a parking lot. This is a gross exaggeration at best. There are a few spaces, all filled by non-patrons, and you can't even turn around to get out. So if you go there, which I recommend that you do, don't count on parking in the lot. Park on the street or go a couple of blocks to the north and park in the public garage."
