I am not an expert on service, other than I know when I get exceptional service. The service we had was fine; however, it was not any better than a high level chain restaurant (Moreton's etc.), and it was not exceptional. Given all things, the service at a competing steakhouse in Riverside is consistently better than what I experienced at Joseph's.
The food WAS exceptional. The steaks were cooked to perfection (all orders were medium or medium rare & cooked perfectly). We all had the filet, and the quality of the beef was prime. The creams brûlée was served in a soup bowl. A fine dining restaurant in a college town? Don't even think about it -- until now! Who would have thought that a wonderful restaurant having terrific food, great service and a charming atmosphere would be hidden in plain sight. Each table is surrounded by a curtain, making it very private. We tried 4 differant appetizers. The onion rings were excellent, as was the fried Boursin. Two of us ordered the lobster, and felt it was tough, and dry, especially around the edges. Was also fishey tasting.
