  • "Good food but very expensive. Everything is a la carte."

  • "I had supper there on 01Apr2014 and had a 1830 reservation. I was seated immediately and waited upon quickly. The setting very lovely and quaint as there are sheer curtains between each table. I had a glass of pinot grigio to drink. Then, they brought hot bread to start the meal and their house salad, topped with a very nice lemon caper vineagrette. For my main course, I had the special: seared halibut in an orange sauce that was cooked well and had a nice citrus finish. It was delicious. For dessert, I had hot tea and a bowel of seasonal berries (have to watch my sugar intake). I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely go back next time that I am in town."

  • "Entree included a very large crisp salad and sides were big enough to share. Tables were separated by sheer curtains which made our table somewhat private. Helpful efficient unobtrusive waiter."

  • "Joseph's is a true gem, evidenced by great food, a fantastic wine menu, excellent staff, and very good ambience. Close to the pedestrian walk way and downtown hotels, you cannot miss. Careful on the blue cheese crust on your steak - they put it on very heavy. Not a complaint, just a note. And definitely clog your arteries with the decadent, but fantastic, loaded hashbrowns! I took my son there as he's a huge steak fan and we both loved it!"

  • "We took a friend out for his retirement celebration and the food, and atmosphere were great. It is a bit pricey for iowa City, but for a special occasion I would rate it hightly."

  • "The experience was way better than what I was expecting. The options on the menu were superb and the quality of the food and service was very high-end. And even better was the excellent feeling of intimacy for the especial occasion we were celebrating (my in-laws 40th anniversary). Highly recommended."

  • "How fortunate are we to have such an amazing restaurant right here in Iowa City? The food is always cooked to pefection. And.....don't miss the key lime pie for dessert. We highly recommend that you ask for Lydia to make your dining experience complete."

  • "We chose this restaurant to celebrate ours college student's birthday. Love the curtains that separated us from other diners! Gave a nice sense of intimacy. Food was very good. Sides are a la carte but generous in portion and can easily be shared. Our waitress was very attentive and informative. Would definitely go back."

  • "We are in Iowa City often but had always walked past Joseph's. Our favorite place was too crowded, so we decided to give it a try. It was fabulous! The food, the service, the drinks- all great. Do not miss out on the onion rings; they are the best I have ever had. My 18 year old son said if he had nothing ever to eat other than these rings, he would be a happy guy. We also enjoyed the beef and blue (tenderloin tips and blue cheese) appetizer, ribeye steak, salmon, crab cakes and burgers. Again, service was outstanding as well. We will be back!"

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Joseph's for our anniversary. The portions were enormous for what you would expect to find at a restaurant in this price range, which was fantastic. I got the petite filet and had to take half of it home! It had an interesting texture that I wasn't used to, but I think the red wine demiglace may have had something to do with that--I usually skip out on this but thought I might try it. All in all, personal preference and not a dig on the restaurant itself. I loved the low lighting and the seclusion of our table--perfect for a romantic date night! We were seated next to a loud group of business folks who seemed to have had a bit too much to drink, but again, not the fault of the restaurant's. Creme brulee=to die for."

  • "Joseph's is a first class place with amazing food!"

  • "Was expecting an extraordinary steak for the price. I selected a Porterhouse that was more like a small T-bone. It was over seasoned an burnt on one end. I chose not to complain as to not make an uneasy evening with my guest. Very poor steak for 37.00 and I drove from CR as well. Service was attentive and pleasant ambiance. Will probably not visit again."

  • "Came to Iowa City with my wife to see a show at the Englert. Wanted to grab a nice dinner before the show..... Nice was an understatement for this steakhouse! Everything was perfect from the ease of parking and the appearance of the restaurant to the fantastic steaks and second to none service. Ranks among the best!"

  • "Iowa City may not be the hottest city to leave or to visit, but even here we have special occasions that call for superb quality dining experience. In those moments Joseph's is the place to go."

  • "Generous portions provide ample opportunity for sharing as well as doggie bags for all. The tuna and seaweed appetizer was a wonderful fresh counterpoint to the beef and blue cheese app. Attentive and knowledgable service along with perfectly prepared steaks and a nice Pinot made for a perfect evening."

  • "Had reservations for Jan. 29th @ 6pm. Probably the worst steak I have ever been served. I ordered the large filet cooked medium, and the entire outside was a burnt crusted disaster, with the center rare, and the sauce drizzled down the sides to hide the appearance. Like eating burnt beef jerky. Our loaded hash browns were also way over cooked and burnt, and they crumbled apart and very difficult to get any on the fork. A chef should know how to regulate heat for proper food preparation, it was obvious, yours does not. Social media & word of mouth are very powerful tools"

  • "Food was great, staff was very helpful-they moved us away from a table right by the heater, which was a bit uncomfortable, to a very nice table nearby. Cocktails are excellent."

  • "I have visited Iowa City many times over the last five years and have always wanted to eat there. It did not disappoint. Filet was perfectly cooked, great sauce, crispy hash browns, wonderful salad. And a pretty darn good Cosmo too!"

  • "My husband and I ate at Joseph's on Sat. As always, the ambience is excellent. The food is expensive, but very good. The entrees come with soup or salad. We both had the French onion soup which was quite good. The dinner menu is meat-heavy with a variety of steaks that you can get with different rubs or sauces so the options are quite expansive. They also have fish and a few seafood offerings. He got filet and I got the scallops. Both were delicious. Downside - if you want any sides, they are overpriced and are served "family style". Not very efficient for a party of 2. We ordered the roasted potatoes which were burned and hard. At least we didn't get charged for them."

  • "For being a Steak House, the Ribeye that I had, and the NT Strip my wife had, we both had challenges cutting through the meat."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "Both our dinners were perfect! Prime rib was fantastic, but the size makes it enough for a family of 4 - we had to take the leftovers home and we made two more meals of them! Scallops were perfectly-cooked. Side dishes -we had mashed potatoes and asparagus - are generous - each one was more than enough for two people. Creme brulee for dessert - and again, it was perfect!"

  • "We were there early about 5:30 on a saturday night. It was very quiet an the feel was that we were the only people that mattered to your staff even after people started to fill up the place. The staff was very attentive and the food superb. The portions were generous and delicious. We will recommend your restaurant and definetly be back."

  • "Portions of sides were too large and too expensive and average in taste and presentation. The steaks were worth the price and grilled perfectly but paying several dollars extra for one of their listed salads when that is the only item included with the entree was a really cheap aspect. I suggest that the salad not be included or give a choice of which salad you wanted. Drinks seemed expensive---a Bloody Mary cost $12.00. Ambiance was nice, private, comfortable and table settings were elegant."

  • "been to my share of steakhouses, and this is not one of the best. Meat subpar. Croutons almost inedible bc of size and hardness."

  • "My previous trip to Joseph's Steakhouse was great which is why I came this time. Had some issues this time however. They tried to cook my steak 4 times never did get it right. Things also were not timely and they had computer issues. I would still come here again based on previous time."

  • "My husband of 22 years and I had date night at this wonderful restaurant. The fresh salad was a perfect start to the meal, generously portioned and the balsamic vinaigrette was wonderfully tangy and just a little sweet. The green beans were awesome. Very fresh and perfectly cooked with toasted sliced almonds. Ver generously portioned as well. My husband and I only wished we would have ordered 2 different side dishes so we could have shared and tasted something else on the menu. My petite steak was perfectly seasoned and crusted on top, cooked medium with a dark pink center. Just perfect. I only wish I had room for the entire steak. It was just a great meal. We would definitely drive the 90 miles again for our date night at Josephs!"

  • "We both loved our meals and they were very knowlegable on gluten free foods. The food was divine and the service was way about the ordinary. The private dining areas ad to the experience. We'll certainly be back."

  • "After making advance reservations for an early celebration dinner, we were squeezed into a corner with two chairs touching the adjacent walls of the corner, one chair in the door way (obstructing traffic), and one chair touching the chair of an adjacent table. We asked the hostess for another table in a less constrained location, but we were told, with insistence, that the tables were all assigned without exception. The hostess also informed us that she would send the manager for further discussion, however, for the entire time that we were there, the manager failed to show. Our waiter was forced to reach over the table to serve and buss. I had to interrupt a customer at the adjacent table to make space for me to leave the table."

  • "This was our first parents weekend and we wanted to go somewhere special with our son. Everything we had was outstanding. I had fish and my husband and son had a veal chop and steak. The spinach salad is great and a little bit different than the usual. We also had a side of boursin potatoes which were to die for. Highly recommend!"

  • "visited on 10-25-13. Arrived at 6:40 for 7:00 reservation and was told that we would be sat as soon as "the table designated for our party was done." At 7:15, I was told we should get a drink at the bar. At 7:45 they told me that the party at "our table" had finally gotten the check and "should be leaving soon." I told them that this system of designating a specific table was ridiculous and the hostess agreed and apologized for the policy. Long story short, we were now running very late for our evening plans and when my medium filet came well done and the mashed potatoes cold, we had no time to send it back. Very, very disappointed in the whole experience. You don't expect this from a so called 5 star restaurant."

  • "We enjoyed Joseph's as a romantic night out. While the table was a bit cramped and it didn't feel particularly quiet or private as promised, the food was amazing and the server was very attentive. It was very busy the night we dined since it was parents' weekend at the university. Next time we'd try a less busy time to make it easier to hear and talk."

  • "We went with some friends from South Carolina and none of us had ever tried it before so we figured we would give it a shot. So glad we did! The food was beyond delicious and our drinks were just as great. Our waiter needed a little work, but we figured he was new since he did not know much about the menus yet. Overall it was a wonderful evening and we are definitely going back again soon!"
