A word from Jose and Sons
We serve comfort food that celebrates our forefathers’s Mexican roots and the culinary traditions of the local neighborhood.

"Intentionally or not, with the opening of Jose and Sons the Ibarras have also created a gastronomic symbol for the cultural melting pot that our region is increasingly becoming."

"Painted around the base of the bar, in large block capital letters, are the words “HECHO EN RALEIGH.” I can’t think of a more suitable motto for a restaurant that embodies the best of our rapidly evolving local dining scene."

Diner Reviews
  • "Sat at the bar and the service was TERRIBLE! Couldn't even get drink refills, which I expect to flow with ease at the bar! Food was good though."

  • "Not going to bore you with a long drawn out review. .excellent food, very good sangria, and great atmosphere! Definitely would recommend reservations if you plan on going during the weekend. Only down side is parking. The parking lot is small and fills up quick. Either street parking or public lots nearby."

  • "The meal for 2 was amazing! The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned just the right amount. Pork and chicken were very well seasoned and not dried out at all. Drinks were fantastic. Overall, a wonderful dining experience! Would recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal."

  • "This is an interesting creative venue with some unusual twists on Mexican cuisine. Worth the adventure!"

  • "The Chef's Picnic for 2 is great way to go with a date or friend. Everything was delicious with more than enough food for both."

  • "Fantastic first visit to Jose & Sons - we will be back."

  • "This may be the best brunch I've had in Raleigh. Gigantic Bloody Mary, and the chiccaron & waffles was excellent. Everything tasted extremely fresh and service was great. I'll be back for lunch and dinner. Probably both today."

  • "Jhabari was our favorite Raleigh restaurant and we were heartbroken when it closed. We had avoided Jose & Sons, felt like we were betraying an old friend. Once we learned Jose & Sons is the same owner, same chef we had to give it a try. Excellent food with a more casual yet trendy vibe. Gone - the Cowboy Steak, quarto guacamole, and tequila flights. New - exciting cocktails, pork bellies, collards and my favorite on the menu Picnic for Two. it's phenomenal especially if you can't decide what to order. The dish feeds more than two and could easily stretch to four ppl if you've indulged in appetizers."

  • "Dined at Jose and Sons for brunch last weekend. I had been reading and hearing it was a great place. And it was mentioned in a NYT article about Raleigh. The décor is not your typical "Mexican restaurant" at all. Décor was unique yet sophisticated. Loved their motto "Hola Y'all, Mexican born-Southern raised"! That says it all. The food was amazing! Great unique brunch items to choose from on menu. My husband had Guadalajara Skillet and pronounced it best ever had. I had their famous Chicharrone and Waffles. Oh my gosh...I was hooked from the first bite! We both raved about the meal all through it. We absolutely will be back for brunch and are making plans to return for dinner soon. The setting in the old train depot is also so fun."

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner, but I can't stop thinking about the margaritas. Good tequila, fresh squeezed juices and perfectly balanced drinks for just $8?! Awesome. Loved everything and will definitely return."

  • "Loved this place as Jibarra and now we love Jose & Sons. I think this is a great concept - a smash up of traditional Mexican with Southern soul food. Tostones and pimento cheese? Fabulous! Collard-wrapped tamales? Fantastic! Also love that they are sourcing very local - Videri Chocolate Factory, Trophy Brewing, Crank Arm Brewing and Tasty Beverage. Be sure to try one of their delicious cocktails. I love the cucumber margarita as well as chipolte mango rita. YUM. Service is great too. Our waiter was always on the spot and anticipated all our needs. Do put Jose & Sons on your "must visit" list. This is a gem. We'll be back time after time."

  • "The food was good with limited options for vegetarians. This is not an uncommon issue that we run into when dining out so we are used to it. The menu is pretty limited, but the ingredients were very fresh, i prefer a little more spice, but thats a personal preference. The staff was very friendly. I will go back and check out the brunch"

  • "This is not a typical Mexican restaurant, but an upscale South American experience. I love Mexican food anyway, but this kind is different, not typical and every dish I've tried has so many different flavors, it's refreshing!"

  • "This place has great potential. Cool atmosphere, great service, interesting menu but a 90 sanitation grade doesn't cut it. Can't recommend it until that changes. Except for that BIG drawback, I believe they could easily earn 4-5 stars overall."

  • "Went there with my SO, and had a great experience. No problems being relocated when we found we would rather sit at another table, drinks were great, food was great, and the server was warm, welcoming, helpful and just generally very pleasant."

  • "Great experience. "So Long" dinner with a couple leaving the area. Great service but then it wasn't very crowded for a Thursday night. ACC Tournament may have had something to do with that. Lamb chops and enchiladas were the two best meals on the table. Nice job. Already recommended to others. Will go back for sure."

  • "We had a great time! Our waiter was awesome. He gave great drink and food recommendations as well. Great first time."

  • "Not the typical Mexican restaurant. Chef is creative and creates seasonal dishes that make your mouth water. Had the goat cheese guacamole to start. Wonderful combination. Fish tacos was great but tamales was the best I've had! Def coming back to try the rest of the menu:)"

  • "I have eaten dinner and brunch at Jose and Sons and both experiences were incredible. The ceviche is delicious and the service is top notch!"
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "The decor is laid back country mixed with festive nightlife. I loved the unique transformation from the mexican restaurant Jibarra! (not that Jibarra was bad) I had shrimp and grits-a lot of flavor pretty rich with butter I think. My husband had the steak and shrimp with rice/beans and salad. It was fresh and tasty. Only complaints were the guacamole could have used some onion and jalepeno for spice and the steak wasn't cooked well done throughout as requested. The MARGARITAS ARE PERFECTION! We will be back to try something again but can't come too much because the price is pretty high for just a regular night out."

  • "All entrees ordered off the brunch menu by our party of six were delicious! The chicharrones and waffle was the favorite."

  • "If you're looking for a taco/burrito spot or good greasy Mexican food, don't come here. They have high quality, unique, and healthy Mexican food dishes. Very tasty! Definitely will come back, it's more of a fancy Mexican food spot, great to impress with and delicious!"

  • "I dined here with 5 of my dearest friends in Raleigh while I was visiting from NYC. I had a few mango margaritas and they were SO delicious. We started with the guacamole and brussel sprouts! AHH! YUMMY! I had the Enchiladas Del Mar... SO GOOD! The rice (in my opinion) was a little dry and bland, so I added a little salsa and that helped! Our server was SO SWEET, but it was very hard to hear him, he was very soft spoken... speak up!! :) We had a great time and will be back!"

  • "...I've ever out in my mouth was the Chucharron and Waffle -- a little spicy and sweet with perfectly crispy chunks of pork belly over that amazing (gluten free) corn mass waffle. Amazing! The market guacamole with goat cheese and poblano peppers was 'lick the bowl clean' good. My dinner companion enjoyed the chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce. Very good service. Music was a bit loud, but selection was good (although wasn't expecting Joe Cocker in this setting)."

  • "Great service . Nice atmosphere . Excellent drink and tequila selection . Unfortunately the entree selections we chose were very over cooked and one was so salty it was almost not edible . Stick to apps , the featured guacamole was tasty ."

  • "What a great twist on Mexican food! Not only was the food great, but so were the margaritas and our waitress"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Brunch was delicious! Huevos Benny, Chicharrones & Waffles (so much pork), the Skillet, Shrimp and Grits, Churros with chocolate sauce, all fantastic! The chorizo in the Benny and the Skilled was so good. Also, be sure to notice that they have guava mimosas and mango mimosas in addition to the classic. Their Bloody Mary looks ridiculous! It's HUGE, comes with tons of garnishes, and a beer back. We tasted nothing bad. The only minor downside was that our server (while super nice with a great accent) was a little busy because it was a crowded brunch. It was ok though because we were stuffed and our second round of mimosas came in (what seemed like) much larger glasses. Fantastic. I'll be back to try every meal that they serve at Jose & Sons."

  • "There were four of us and none of us had a great meal. The food was just ok. Drinks were just ok, nothing special. Won't be rushing back."

  • "We took folks from out of town and they loved the neighborhood. It was a group of late 20 and early 30 somethings. The only problem is that it was EXTREMELY loud, and that stuff doesn't usually bother me."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "By far, the best ceviche in town. The chicken tortilla soup is supreme."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "Great Margaritas, good beer selection, wonderful food. Not your typical family mexican restaurant and that is just fine with me. I definitely recommend."

  • "J&S made our night! We arrived early, had drinks at the bar - really happy to see Boulevard Brewing Co.'s Tank No. 7 (farmhouse ale) on tap! After an enjoyable time at the bar, we were seated. The menu isn't huge, but still, I had to think about just what to have for dinner. For the table we really enjoyed the Tostones and the market guacamole, both very tasty and they disappeared quickly! For our entree we chose the Chef's Picnic - this is for two, but I think you could feed 3 or more! Grilled meat, vegetables and corn on the cob. It took some work to finish that, but I decided early on we would not be entertaining dessert. Very pleased with the food, the staff and the mood of Jose & Sons - this place is a keeper!"

  • "Comparing this to all of the Dos Taquitos and Cantina 18, I would say that Jose and Sonsis the best upscale Mexican food in Raleigh. The food was all great, the prices were reasonable, the service was perfect, they accommodated a large group easily and the drinks were solid. I will definitely be going back."

  • "We had the Pimento Cheese Tostones, Grilled Corn, Collard-Wrapped Tamales and Crank Arm Barbacoa. It was all incredibly delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We'll be stopping by more often, just for the corn! I will warn you, if you don't like spicy food, you will not like this. If you like extremely well executed comfort food with a bit of a kick, you will love it."

  • "Our waiter was very nice and attentive, which can go either way I feel when you have a party of 8. The chicken enchiladas and flautas were excellent. The fish tacos were too spicy for us. Margaritas were good but too pricey in my opinion."
