Diner Reviews
  • "The food is superlative and the waitstaff is pleasant, friendly yet professional and quietly unobtrusive. We have been eating here for more than a decade and have always had a wonderful meal. Our favorites include the lobster, chicken, duck and jaegerschnitzel all of which are routinely excellent. When we go there we like to sit in the smaller dining room to the left of the bar as you enter. As the light fades the garden and statuary are illuminated and it is quite peaceful. Also, there is live music on Saturdays during the summer, check their website for details. When in Ogunquit if you can only dine at one restaurant, this should be it!"

  • "Not one to comment on restaurants and I do understand that I went on a major holiday but the service was terrible. Service was very slow. Waitresses did not check on us at all and were very rude when we told them we had a question about a gluten free menu. Two waitresses kept bringing us bread even after I told them we were gluten free. The "gluten free" mussles had a giant piece of bread on the top of them. The food was okay but not for the prices. I am willing to try Jonathans one more time on a non holiday because I have heard good things about it. I am hoping it was just a really bad night...."

  • "Stuffed quail was perfect. Courses were timed just right and food was hot when served. Not our first time here and will not be our last."

  • "Coming from NYC, I honestly wasn't expecting much in little Oginquit, Main but the food was fabulous. Honestly, it took us so long to order because everything looked so good. We went for the Chef's Table Menu. I started with the Voodoo Coconut Shrimp as my appetizer and the Stuffed Quail as my entree. Both were cooked to perfection and the flavors blended nicely. For dessert we split the Banana Pudding in Filo. Yum. Next time I'm getting my own. This is a great place if your going to a show at the Ogunquit Theater. It's just a few minutes away and there was no traffic between the restaurant and the theater."

  • "This was our second time, the food was very good, but the service was bad. It's not that the wait staff was not friendly. It's that they were not attentive to our need at all. Empty water glasses no request for more wine, no follow up after serving entree as to if everything was to our liking. Appetizer dishes not collected sat on table thru most of the meal. Desert was offered after dinner we decided to order the cinnamon coffee ice cream & coffee , after 10 minutes passed and no follow up, we gave up and asked for our check. The food was $$$ which is fine if u get what you expect. I think there needs to be a little training, as to what the customers expectations are and how to meet or exceed them."

  • "I booked Jonathan's because it was next to our hotel - the Meadowmere. It was Friday, July 4th & we did not want to hassle with traffic. It was a great choice. We enjoyed our meal and decided to book it for Saturday - while we were still eating on Friday. The restaurant has a large, lovely interior. There is live jazz in the bar and they also host shows upstairs, but where we ate was quiet enough for conversation. The menu features many items grown on the restaurant's own farm. Some prices are a bit high, but we felt it was reasonable for the quality of the food. My husband splurged on the veal loin wrapped in lamb bacon. I had caramelized salmon - both excellent. From appetizer to dessert, no complaints. Great service too."

  • "We read some reviews before going and we're warned about slow service. And boy we're they right. We had tickets to a show so we begrudging booked a table 2 hrs ahead of time. Good thing we did. We were seated right away but between ordering and waiting and waiting for service to paying the bill it was tremendously slow. It took us almost two hours to dine! They had only one waitress for an entire room if tables. They need to hire more wait staff. Food wasn't bad but pricey."

  • "It is maybe a little old fashioned in a good way. Basic food, prepared well, well made drinks, and very nice servers. Our grandson loved the 600 gallon aquarium so there was a little bit of everything for everyone. Two of us did the sword fish on a bed of salad. Another had similar except with halibut. Another in our party had the filet mignon. To the bottom line: yes we would return there."

  • "Nice spot out of the tourist zone in Ogunquit. Ok wine list. Good lobster and a good vegetarian dish."

  • "We have eaten here several times and food has always been great. Unfortunately, this time our waiter was only fair. Failed to refill water glasses, did not introduce himself and seemed unfamiliar with things. We will give the place another chance and hope this service is not a trend."

  • "I went to Jonathan's for dinner prior to a 7:00 show at the Ogunquit Theater. Our reservation was for 5:00 on a Sunday which we thought would give us plenty of time to eat. Although the food was decent and the waitstaff was very pleasant, the service was unbelievably slow despite the fact that we informed our servers that we needed to be at a 7:00 show. Also, we were not given the 10% discount that we were entitled to despite showing our theater tickets. Unfortunately, by the time we realized this, we were already late for the theater and could not go back. Two hours should have been more than enough for a dinner without rushing and worrying about time. We did not even have time to order dessert."

  • "We have eaten at jonathan's many times when we are in Ogunquit and have never been disapointed with the food or service My wife has a gluten allergy and they go out of there way to accomodate her and make her feel special"

  • "The food was good; but the service was not. We had 2 waitresses. One was nice enough to take over, when the 1st one ignored us. -Initially, the original waitress was in a hurry for us to order. Then it seemed that she purposely let us sit & rot, because we didn't want to order right away. -She just seemed very grumpy. -Nice window view; but rather noisy."

  • "The food was very good and fresh. The service is basic, not too warm and pleasant. The restaurant is very noisey. It needs something to absorb the noise. For that reason, I would not want to return, if I were in a group of three or more. It is difficult to hear someone across the table from you. We would have stayed longer and had desert, but wanted to go someplace that we could talk."

  • "Jonathan's is consistant year after year. My family has eaten at Jonathan's since 1988 and we love the food, love the decor, appreciate the attentive service. Restaurants come and go but Jonathan's always satisfies. Their menu is varied enough so everyone in our party can find something delicious. They don't try to be anything other than what they are... a restaurant that keeps you coming back because you know what you will get when you go there. Great food, great service and a genuine welcome back."

  • "It was a bit noisy in the restaurant area. Food was good, nothing great. Our service wasn't good at all, but I noticed other waitstaff being very attentive. I think our waiter just wasn't up to par. We were there for an event which was upstairs after the dinner. I would recommend the dinner & show package."

  • "No need to worry about being able to enjoy a nice dinner and be at the playhouse on time. Jonathan's offers comfortable tables with plenty of space along with excellent service and friendly staff. They have a speedy kitchen serving excellent food and scrumptious desserts. You won't regret"

  • "Iceberg lettuce (yuck) salad was way overpriced! Would have preferred leaf lettuce or spring mix. Scallops tasted ok, but not covered with enough breadcrumbs and no wine or butter sauce. They sat in water, not very tasty. Food was served too quickly, so no time to enjoy the meal/evening. Our party of 4 felt very rushed. Atmosphere is nice, but will not return."

  • "We frequently book the dinner and concert, which includes dessert. The tiramisu and cheese cake were no longer offered, a big disappointment to us. It seems as if the management was cutting corners to increase profits. A cake and apple crisp did not compare. These tickets are pricey, too. Also, the baked stuffed haddock portion has shrunk significantly while the price has gone up. In all the value has deteriorated."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Unfortunately the food was tasteless for every dish - lobster, scallops, steak, salad, and bread. No spices, bland. Service was inattentive."

  • "We picked Jonathans' because their website indicated that they had gluten free options available, which my wife requires. When we didn't see anything indicated on the menus, we asked the waitress. She said that she would check. After a 10 minute wait, she returned to the table and asked for our orders. We asked again about the gluten free options and she replied, "oh, yes, there is a haddock meal." We asked if there was anything else and she said no. So, my wife ordered the haddock. The service was very slow (our water glasses were refilled when we were ready to leave)and my Cappuccino never arrived (she claimed she broke the machine, and then laughed about it). Food is good - not outstanding."

  • "The was our firs time to Jonathan's. Wait staff efficient and friendly. Portions were good. It was loud and non-romantic but not known for that."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The food quality (& quantity!) was exceptional for the price. Service was great for us (but a few tables around us seemed to wait a bit before initially being greatest by the servers...) Ambiance was nice with music playing loud enough to hear but not too loud to cause issues when trying to talk to each other. Parking was on site and easy. Will definitely return to try some of the other amazing sounding items on their menu!"

  • "Food is actually very good but waitress not so good; asked for two male lobsters: got one male/one female; asked to have lobsters cracked; neither cracked....waitress never asked if everything was okay; her assistants were more attentive than she...had to ask for extra napkins by flagging one down...meal came with dessert and waitress acted as if desserts weren't part of the package...didn't seem to pay any attention to us; it was a special 70th birthday celebration so quite disappointed by the service."

  • "I believe that Jonathan's is heavily frequented by Ogunquit Playhouse goers, so it is probably very busy on the nights on which there are shows. Also there seems to be a propensity toward an older crowd. If this is an issue with clientele, then they should probably stay away. Having said that, my husband ordered a beef entree and I ordered a fish entrees, both of which were magnificently prepared. And that is the reason why we returned for our most recent visit to Ogunquit. We went reasonably early on a non-show night and, of course, made reservations in advance. EXCEPTIONAL FOOD QUALITY, which, in the final analysis, trumps all. The serve staff was also very attentive and unobtrusive and the food was HOT. Great experience."

  • "I can be a food snob for sure but every time I come back I remember how brilliant the service is and how delicious the menu offerings are. A consistently high quality, fresh, tasty meal! From the fried oysters to the shrimp, boneless buffalo chicken with kick butt blue cheese dressing (I'm a conisseur. ) all yummy. Steaks and Salmon are very good too. Thanks, again."

  • "The night was just great! We had a very nice seat looking out towards the garden. The restaurant was not overly crowded, so things were attended to quickly. The wait staff very polite, and efficient. Have been a customer many times in the past, will be back again to see you!!"

  • "First and last visit to Jonathan's. Went following the matinee at the Ogunquit Playhouse arriving at 5:30. We were just about the first and only customers there and were seated not in the main dining room but on the glassed in porch. My husband ordered what he thought were broiled scallops, and they were in a casserole and broiled briefly before serving. The manager was very nice and did give us a free dessert. But it was a disappointment. My lamb dinner was excellent."

  • "The room was open and spacious and had a nice woodland view. Rack of lamb was generous but was disappointed by small portion of risotto stuffed in a tomatoe and not cooked all the way through. Very cozy bar, but attentiveness of bar staff was lacking. Comfortable place for a quiet meal but don't expect stellar performances from anybody there."

  • "Jonathan's is always on my list for after theater dinner...the ambience, service, food historically a treat...and love the gardens and lighting. Live entertainment This time my dinner selection was not quite as special. Ordered the Rack of Lamb with Mushroom Risotto served in grilled tomato. Risotto was very dry and overdone with herbs...mustard on the lamb a bit strong for my taste. Chef's muse soup delicious: creamed zucchini, yellow squash spinach. Bread Pudding tasty, but I should have asked for extra whipped cream. The service was ok but not the usual warm and friendly I've enjoyed in the past. Will definitely return, however, as I chalk this experience up to an "off" night - Jonathan's is usually outstanding."

  • "As noted above, everything was great. I should note to Open Table that this is your second request and I sent one in after the first request. i should also note that Open Table got the date wrong by a day. It was supposed to be 5/10 and Open Table reserved for 5/11"

  • "Took the mother of my child to Jonathan's on Mother's Day. Easier to drive to Maine and back from North Reading than into Boston and back, so we did. Table by the garden afforded nice views of busy hummingbirds. I had the lobster bisque and glazed salmon; my wife ordered the corn chowder with peppers and the Mother's Day special, an Atlantic redfish and lobster roulade. Much sharing ensued; everything was terrific, and the lobster roulade deserves a place on the standard dinner menu. Peach cobbler for dessert finished us off nicely. Very reasonable prices were the icing on the cake we didn't have room for. 3rd or 4th visit to Jonathan's including a dinner/show combo for Tom Rush. This restaurant is becoming one of our favorites.
