Diner Reviews
  • "Hey this place was amazing. From the service to the food, everything was spot on. Went on a busy friday night last minute and everyone still took the time to make me and my fami feel special."

  • "Very disappointing. The food was bland and uninspired. I could have been eating at Applebee's. The wine (by the glass) was stale and tasteless. For $$$$ pricing I would recommend trying many of the other fine places in Lexington. I've tried Jonathan's twice, 3 years apart. I won't be going back."

  • "I made reservations for Thursday night this past week. We were seated right away. It took a while to get our drinks but then our appetizers and salads came faster once ordered. The potstickers and pimento cheesy grits fries were awesome! But when it came to dinner we waited almost an hour for our entrees and by then it was almost 10:30 pm and the other guests were clearing out. When they came the dishes weren't very hot and we had NO apology from our server. At this point the night went a bit sour although the food was very good. A simple apology would have been nice but we had no explanation why it took so long! Overall great food but the service needs to be polished up a bit for a 4-5 star restaurant."

  • "Scallop hot browns were very good. Short rib special was incredible. Shrimp and grits was a good, and not too spicy. We will definitel go back to try more dishes. Top notch bourbon selection too."

  • "Splendid in every way. My companion and I were out-of-town visitors looking for quality food with a distinctly southern slant--and Jonathan did not disappoint. Sorry only that I don't live closer!"

  • "We went for the Sunday brunch. We were from out-of-town and selected the restaurant based on reviews in some of the websites (I don't recall which ones exactly - probably either Yelp or Trip Advisor.) It was fantastic! For $25 per person, we got to choose one appetizer each and one entree each and then we each got some home-made ice cream. My wife started with the pork belly app. The ginger slaw was just amazing. She then had the shrimp and grits - she loved them but I found them to be just slightly disappointing. I was trying to stay regional with my selections. I started with the burgoo which was excellent - the veggies were very fresh and plentiful and the flavor was great. I had a Hot Brown for my dinner - one of the best I've had."

  • "From beginning to end, the experience was wonderful. From the before dinner cocktails to the Hot Brown Scallop appetizer to the Kentucky Burgoo, everything was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed a grilled caesar salad. My husband is still talking about the Quail in BBQ Blackberry Sauce. The ambience was perfect for our anniversary celebration and we could not have asked for better service. For a memorable experience, I highly recommend Jonathan's at Gratz Park!"

  • "Everytime I have gone to this location for a special event we are treated well with attention paid to our gluten free diet needs and excellent selections in wine and bourbons. Jonathan is great chef who changes up the menu often enough to keep it interesting."

  • "We have gone for brunch several times and always been very pleased. Fixed price menu is very generous and has lots of options. The chopped salad with house smoked salmon was terrific. Main course shrimp and grits was the best I've ever had. Choice of three interesting ice creams for dessert."

  • "We make a point to dine here whenever we are in Lexington. What a beautiful setting for dinner. The bourbon list comes in a binder. Great selection. Our group included some picky eaters and cocktail snobs but our waiter accommodated all requests with a smile. The menu is diverse and the chef offers seasonal and locally sourced options. Unlike some "foodie" restaurants I have dined at, the portions here are not skimpy. An overall excellent experience."

  • "Johnathan has an innovative menu that builds on regional traditions but in an updated and creative way. Our meal was well prepared and served. The wine list, while not extensive, had more than adequate choices and some very interesting selections."

  • "The food was amazing and every bite was tasty and unique. Though it is pricey, it was worth every penny. My steak was undercooked, but when I told the waiter, he took it back, apologized, reheated my side and set the meal on a new plate. We sampled the desserts and appetizers, all of which were delicious. The bread pudding donuts were great!"

  • "i found Jonathan's 6 years ago when I moved to Lexington and it has been my all time favorite Lexington Restaurant since. My absolute favorite thing on the menu is the mushroom dusted tenderloin but everything I've ever had there is amazing. The grit fries are unique and memorable....one of those things I crave from time to time! I highly recommend Jonathans!!!"

  • "Food was just okay considering it is expensive. Lobster mac n cheese side dish was $15 and even though it had a hint of lobster flavor I didn't find any chunks of lobster in it. Shrimp n Grits, shrimp was overcooked, grits were average at best but sauce flavor was very good. Wife had the steak which was pretty good but not great. Really dissapointed in whole experience because it was a special occasion and was expecting a great meal but it was way overpriced for the quality at least on this our first trip there. Service was awesome at first but then we waited almost 15 minutes after eating before getting our check. Overall experience wasn't horrible, just not enough to bring us back unless someone else is buying."

  • "This was the second time my wife and I had food at Jonathan's in one week, and we love it! The service is extremely professional, the setting is great, and the food is nothing short of amazing. I especially recommend the Pork Fat Fries and thePork Fat Fried Brussel Sprouts. The former are what I imagine fries used to taste like - crispy, with excellent but not overpowering flavor. The latter will make anyone like their veggies. As for entrees, the chef likes to experiment, and the specials were great both times. We especially recommend the quail, and the mushroom-dusted stake."

  • "Driving North on I-75 we spent an evening in Lexington. After several Internet searches decided on Jonathan's and were glad we did. Well appointed room, excellent service, inclusive wine list (we chose the weekly special) and a menu that was broad but not overly large. Meal was well presented and excellent. Our only negative was that for our palates it was a little heavy on the salt...but we use less than many."

  • "Really great meal and loved the way they set up for our group of 12. We sampled almost everything on the menu and no one was disappointed in their selections."

  • "Dinner at Jonathan at Gratz Park was a meal we will never forget. My husband & I went for dinner while we were in town for the weekend. We were amazed by the excellent service. Our serve was outstanding. He was very attentive and informed about the menu. The food was delicious. We had selected entrees from their special featured menu for that Valentine's weekend. Every bite was wonderful. Make a point to save room for dessert. The caramel pound cake with caramel sauce and homemade ice cream was incredible. Next time we go back to the Lexington area we plan to visit Jonathan at Gratz Park again."

  • "Uniquely different and well designed menu, waiter had a good understanding of the various menu items and explained them well, then provided impeccable service."

  • "We stayed at the Gratz Hotel after our first day on the Bourbon Trail and Jonathan's had been recommended as a great place to have dinner. The waiter was very helpful and enthusiastic about the food and answered our questions confidently. We started with the Beef fat fries which were delicious-- my husband ordered the pork chops which were done perfectly and my daughter and I ordered several sides to share... all very good but I think the pork fat pot stickers were our favorite. The ambience is stately and a little old fashioned which was very nice. The hotel is also a great place to stay. For after dinner drinks... walk down to the Bluegrass Tavern and learn about the best bourbons in the state."

  • "I'm from North MS, and made reservations for my parents (they were traveling to Kentucky) for their 30th Anniversary. They loved it, and are still talking about it... They were extremely impressed with the history of it, and they both said the food was impeccable!"

  • "This was a most enjoyable and elegant evening .the food was superb and the setting was very special. being from Washington DC, I found the value for money to be extraordinary.I will be a frequent visitor on future trips to Lexington."

  • "We travel a lot and try to visit local establishments. Were wowed by Jonathann's first time we went. Second visit was just so-so. Nothing great, but then again, nothing horrible, but prices are too high not to knock our socks off. We were in love with their take on the "hot brown" but it just didn't hold up to our memories. Did we place it on too high a pedestal? Fried green tomato salad suffered from the quality of the tomatoes. Pulled pork pot stickers ho-hum. Lobster mac and cheese was the best thing on the table. Service was adequate and still love the atmosphere, although we had some very loud people next to us. Next time we're in Lexington we will seek out a new local place to try."

  • "Went with a couple of coworkers for lunch. I had a burger that was fine, nothing special and certainly not worth the price. Our server was not friendly and seemed flustered despite the fact that the dining room did not appear all that busy. One of my fellow diners tried lightening the mood with a joke but all humor was wasted on that guy. All-in-all our lunch was nice, but not worth recommending. You can get just as good food for half the price point at any of several other nearby lunch spots. I don't mind paying these prices but the food and service needs to make it worth it."

  • "I was visiting from Cincinnati for the evening and invited two of my friends out for my birthday celebration this last Saturday and the restaurant was excellent! The service was exceptional and the food was outstanding. Everything was perfect - thank you."

  • "We visited Jonathan's just after a University of Kentucky home basketball game a few blocks away, and the place was packed. Service was a bit stressed, but the waiters were friendly and none of the customers appeared to be in a hurry. So it was a perfect time to savor the great food and drink. Jonathan's has the most imaginative take on Kentucky food anywhere. Southern food with a continental flair? Not sure what you would call it, but there is no other place like it. Bottom line: the food is superb. And the talented bartender makes delicious mixed drinks. There is no better place in Lexington to go for a special occasion."

  • "Didn't know that they had dining room damage because of the Ice and snow storms this winter. We were seated in the bar for dinner with the regular food and drink still available. Looking forward to the renovation project to be completed. We do like the quiet dining arrangement in the regular dining room. We were still able to have a good dinner conversation."

  • "From the fried green tomato salad to the Spalding's doughnut bread pudding to the oyster stuffed filet in between, it was a rare treat in a dining experience. My wife and I have been married for 33 years and to say that this was the best Valentine's Dinner together that we have ever had would be an understatement. Simply put - PERFECTION!"

  • "This place is a gem. Our waiter Mark hit the perfect balance of helpful and patient, giving us plenty of time to choose our food and drink without pressure. I had the tenderloin and it was the best I have had by an order of magnitude. My wife had the chef's choice vegetarian, and it was stunningly beautiful and tasty, as we have come to expect from Jonathan. The last time we ate there it was for breakfast and it was the first time I had tasted Morel mushrooms. Oh and the hotel they are located in has tempurpedic mattresses!! We will be back."

  • "We have discovered going out to lunch on Valentine's Day is a wonderful way to beat the crowds and still do something special. That's why we chose Jonathans because we knew we'd get something special. And, we did. The atmosphere and the food was great as always, but on this day, the service was poor. I didn't see many staff in the dining room and the waiters/waitresses were also bussing tables, so I think they were short-handed. We had made reservations and expected the same excellent service that we have received at dinner. Disappointed for that reason, but we'll try again. Managers, please be prepared next year."

  • "It's a valentines day tradition that me and my wife visit Jonathan's. However, this was the worst experience we have had. The food was really good, but squeezing us in a corner table with uncomfortable seats was a problem. I was uncomfortable all night, and it really made the night not as special. We had the pot stickers for an App, and it was "ok." The salads are way overpriced, but good. The entrees were great. The dessert was the best part of the whole mean. The spalding Doughnut bread pudding is a must get. Overall, it was fair. I have high expectations for Jonathan's and this occasion did not live up to them."

  • "Day before Valentines date night. Food was great. Love the KY spin on food. The Ale 8 braised Pork Belly was 'the bomb'."

  • "Title says it all. The food is pretty good, but not amazing. The atmosphere is kind of classy, but more casual than I expected. Half the customers seemed like they had walked down from their rooms in whatever they felt like wearing, so it's not a place to take people you want to impress. Overall it's not bad, but definitely overpriced. Our server was outstanding though. Food was served exactly when it should have been, he helped us select a good wine, but wasn't pushy at all. Wish I remembered his name to compliment him here."

  • "Overall, an enjoyable evening. Food great, attentive service. The lighting was so dim, it was difficult to read the menu. The haughtier-than-thou host set everyone's teeth on edge and has to be replaced! A wonderful restaurant but getting a bit dusty."

  • "My husband ordered the beef tenderloin and it was exceptional! I was in the mood for salmon and it was very disappointing. The cut was strange, and the salmon was quite dry. The glaze was almost non existence. I have eaten at this restaurant many times and have always enjoyed the experience, but this was the first time any of the food was sub par. I actually went home hungry."
