A word from JoLe
JoLe is a Contemporary American Restaurant owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Matt and Sonjia Spector, chef and pastry chef, respectively. JoLe is the couple's second restaurant venture. Their first was the wildly successful, Matyson Restaurant in Philadelphia. The menu changes daily and is designed for flexibility: guests can pop in for a few a la carte dishes, or settle in for a multi course tasting menu that they design themselves. This lends itself well to the casual wine country pace. Matt uses organic, locally farmed ingredients as much as possible. Sonjia's desserts are updated versions of things her mom and grandmother made. Everything on the eclectic wine list is offered by the glass, half bottle, or bottle. The beer list is also fun, consisting of a wide variety of microbrews. JoLe also offers a full bar, specializing in small batch liquors. Even without reservations, bar and chef's counter seats are available on a first come, first serve basisContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "We didn't know what to expect when dining at Jole. What we found was masterfully prepared food in a totally non-pretentious environment. The waiter was incredibly helpful in explaining the options. We choose to create our own tasting menu and I'm so pleased we got to try so many of the delicious options. A special vegetarian risotto was created just for me and it was probably the best thing I've eaten all year. We skipped wine and went for the specialty cocktails which were amazing and paired really well with the food. I would eat here again and again."

  • "My husband and I ate here while on a getaway weekend in Calistoga. We both agreed it is one of the top restaurants we have been to (and we used to live in San Francisco). The restaurant has a casual laid back feeling but the food is by no means casual. We were very impressed by all the complex flavors. It was so yummy!! We did the four course tasting (you get three small plates and a dessert each or four savory) and loved it. Highly recommend it. Looking back though we probably would have done four savory dishes instead of three savory and a dessert. I hate to say it but the next night we ate at Bottega for dinner and the bar had been set so high by JoLe that we can't say we enjoyed it as much."

  • "I've been coming to Jole for years, but this meal was perhaps the worst ever. The appetizers and desserts were great, but the main courses were disappointing. I still plan on returning, but was surprised at how underwhelming the entrees were. They just weren't super tasty."

  • "This is our second time eating at JoLe. Both times food was outstanding, service was perfect. Definitely recommend to friends and family!"

  • "We had multiple courses of interesting food paired with wines that mostly we're new to us. We expect the best ingredients from CA restaurants but the quality at JoLe seemed short of our expectations. Maybe it was the "interesting" preparation. It was worth a try."

  • "Dining at JoLe was a wonderful experience. We were a party of four and the food was excellent, the ambiance was perfect and our server was very attentive. We like the fact that it's small plates so that you can try several different dishes. Joshua took very good care of us and saw to it that all of our needs were met. We would definitely return."

  • "always a treat to dine at JoLe from selecting your own course configuration, to turning over the pairings to their excellent and knowledgeable staff."

  • "Bland, boring and over-priced! Don't waste your money or time. Service was well below average too. Go somewhere else!!!!"

  • "After a long day of great wine tastings we went to JoLe's. The food was fantastic, with tremendous flavors and smells. The presentation was beautiful and the portions were moderate- not huge. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable and made some excellent recommendations. The cost for everything was a bit steep but that is Napa. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "3 members in our party and we each ordered a different tasting course level 4,5, & 6. Right off the bat their willingness to allow us to do that vs. other restaurants we've been to that highly discourage this got our attention, well, it was actually the 2nd thing as we perused the menu and couldn't decide on how many of the unique items to order. So, we ordered 15 unique items and every one of them was worth having and many were simply AMAZING (boar, sweetbreads, duck, brussel sprouts, asparagus, sugar snap peas, ....) Somm Josh and our server John were not only very knowledgeable but also super friendly which is another huge bonus in a high end restaurant where frequently it can tilt towards pretentious."

  • "This place has potential if owners control the process better. The best things about that place: 1. Good ideas on the menu and execution. 2. Wait staff cares very much about the place. 3. Very cute atmosphere. Negative: 1. The hostess is a little lier and that left bad taste in my mouth 2. My swordfish was terribly overcooked. The cream brûlée was simply out of the fridge if you know what I mean. 3. The prices are not in line with delivery. The bottom line. I hope the owners pay attention because I want to go back to that place many times as a regular in Calistoga. It definitely has potential to become the best dinning experience in Calistoga."

  • "I have been to JoLe several times and food was consistently good. However, this visit the service was I attentive and poor. Our waiter was much more interested in chatting with a local winemaker at the bar than being attentive to her tables."

  • "We had a delicious dinner with Jole's iconic octopus (we don't eat spicy food so order it without the chorizo), the quail and duck. My husband said it was the best duck he ever had. We finished everything off with a decadent peanut butter mouse with chocolate. This is our go to restaurant in Calistoga. The service was very attentive and accommodated our request to sit side by side."

  • "Have eaten at JoLe at least 4 times prior to the other evening and this is first time I was disappointed. The sauce that accompanied the scallops did not have a lot of flavor and the duck was the most disappointing as there was grizzle on all pieces and not the soft, meat you expect from a "confit" type preparation."

  • "Food was deliciousness! But for the high price, a larger dinner portion for each meal would be appropriate.love and support farm to table...but it doesn't have to be so wxpensive."

  • "Food was ok, small portion for a full order, and came to table luke warm. Service was good. I should have sent my meal back, but didn't, so I was at blame for not saying anything. A let-down from our meal at Perbaco in San Francisco two nights earlier. A bit disappointing and definitely not a place to cargo-load before the Napa Marathon."

  • "When we asked if Grey Goose was available for a martini the server pointed to the menu and said, "You need to look at that." Nice and helpful and such a great start to our celebratory dinner. (NOT!) The dishes were small and expensive for what they were. After dinner we ordered a latte and asked if they had vanilla. She curtly replied, "This isn't a coffee house." She now has four fewer customers as we will never return."

  • "The only thing going for this restaurant was the great food. The service was poor and fake. Not just our server but everyone working expressed a "I don't care about you" attitude. From the time we sat until the time we left was 2 hours and 40 minutes. We were so ready to leave after the first hour. Bottom line, tried this place once but will never go back again."

  • "Like the title suggests my girlfriend and I had an outstanding experience. We waiting 10 minutes after our reservation time and another couple was doing the same. After letting them go in front of us, as they were freaking out, the sommelier gave us a complementary champaign while waiting the two minutes remaining. We then proceeded to have the most amazing dinner and experience from a phenomenal staff and extraordinary food. I can't wait for another chance to get back to Calistoga!"

  • "We ate at JoLe several years ago and just loved it. Coming back again, we wondered if it would be as good as we remembered. It didn't disappoint! We got the 4-item tasting menu with wine pairing, and each of us got different items. All of our dishes were truly amazing. Each item was thoughtfully approached with interesting preparations that weren't over done. The braised sea scallops and seared salmon served in a light miso broth were my favorites, unless you count the scrumptious chocolate flourless cake with toffee crunch on top, served with espresso ice cream. Great selection of wines for pairing with each dish."

  • "Lively spot in downtown. Interesting menu with a flexible pick your own tasting menu. Everyone went home happy."

  • "Dinner was good; pairings were a bit odd. Just when you found something you thought you'd like on the menu, they paired it with something that didn't seem like it would be a compliment to the main ingredient. Too many dishes with a "pumpkin" flavor. Portions were generous; wait staff was great. Turn off the air conditioning. We were placed at a table where cold air was blowing directly on us. Staff was very good about letting us move - but then at least one to two more couples were seated at the same table and also asked to be moved. Comfort level, temperature wise, in the restaurant was a challenge."

  • "Went here from a recommendation from the owner of our favorite wine bar in Philadelphia...owner is a friend of his. Made our reservation a month ahead of time for 8:45 on Saturday night. Arrived and the only table available was right in front of the door...which was just in the way...people coming in for dinner would stand right there and it also caught the draft from the door. So we asked for a new table and they told us it would be a bit...which was fine. We waited and two seats became available at the food station counter...which was fine. Service there was extremely slow and not very personal Brussel sprouts and cauliflower were both very good. Entrees just so so...desserts were very yummy. Wasn't disappointed but prob won't go back."

  • "When on Valentine’s Day for dinner (always a dicey prospect), and of course they were busy. That did not take away from the wonderful service. But the joy of the evening is the food. Each dish was a delightful exploration of complimentary flavours, with a few surprises thrown in. For this evening we dined a la carte, although in future visits (and there will be more) I would be sure to try a tasting menu. I want to explore everything that these talented chefs have created."

  • "We've been to JoLe many years ago and were delighted to see that it has survived the fallout from the downturn. Calistoga is not in the heart of the Napa wine country so it takes a bit of doing to 'get here', especially driving down dark country roads--but you'd be missing out by NOT trying it. All plates we ordered were both inventive and satisfying. JoLe serves medium sized portions and (IMO) are best if shared! On a side note we thought the wines were quite expensive($18 was a mid-point) we'd liked to have seen more in the $9-11 range. That said, we had and were absolutely delighted with the quality of one of the cheapest selections--although we noted that a few other diners got a larger pour!"

  • "My sisters and I were in Calistoga to celebrate our birthdays and wanted a great meal and fun night out after a day of hiking and thermal baths. JoLe was an easy walk away -- great warm ambience, terrific service staff, beautiful menu. Loved the option to treat the menu as a tasting menu or a more traditional menu. Food was interesting and delicious. Very nice wine selections. Our server was knowledgable and had great energy and was attentive without being intrusive."

  • "JoLe packages an excellent experience, but somehow it feels a little false. The food is just a bit fussy. Does a duck breast really need a quesadilla with it? I know I'm whining, but it just all seemed very packaged and designed to impress. I just like to eat. I don't need big portions, just give me some simple flavors. I might go back, but Calistoga offers a wide variety of restaurant choices."

  • "After a day of wine tasting we were not going to make it to 7pm when our reservation was. We got there at about 5:30 very hungry. We were able to sit at the bar and enjoy a fabulous dinner. I had the cauliflower which was very tasty. I shared some of the scallops and brussel sprouts. What a fun place."

  • "Rush, rush, rush to order, then try to get the waiter for anything else - forget it!! Strange combo of flavors and tastes - far out Calif cuisine - no one dish would you want a whole order of. Way overpriced for what you get. Nice atmosphere though."

  • "Every January we celebrate my birthday with an overnight to Calistoga for the hot springs and dinner at JoLe. Neither ever disappoint. We had the Kale Soup which is one of the finest bowls of soup ever prepared and enjoyed it even more this year. The braised short ribs were outstanding (large portion and slow-cooked to perfection) and the swordfish perfectly cooked and complemented with an interesting red pepper sauce and tiny cubes of eggplant with raisins. Such a pleasure to know that a restaurant is reliably remarkable."

  • "It wouldn't be fair to rate the restaurant as I was not feeling well, but my husband liked the food, but would not go back. The food was not memorable. The service was excellent. They accommodated our need for a quiet corner and were very attentive, even offering me something for my stomach pain. We had eaten at a very nice restaurant the night before and so, in comparison, this food suffered....It was good, just not "good enough" in the competitive restaurant industry!"
