A word from JoJo
JoJo offers relaxed yet elegant dining on two floors of a quaint, turn-of-the-century brownstone on the Upper East Side. The first of Jean-Georges’ restaurants in New York City, this neighborhood gem opened in 1991 to rave reviews. It was voted best new restaurant of the year by Esquire magazine and has retained its three-star status from the New York Times for 21 years. Regarding the name, JoJo was Chef Jean-Georges’ nickname as a young boy. Jojo is a hospitable setting for a casual dinner, special occasion, or private party. Guests can feel comfortable in jeans or in evening attire. The contemporary French menu still features some well-loved original dishes, including the Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Jojo's is a restaurant that captures the essence of the neighborhood it serves. A long time upper east side restaurant, the decor is classy yet modern, and the atmosphere is relaxed yet refined. I enjoy dining at Jojo's as it feels like I'm in my own world. Speaking of, the food is out of this world. There are flavor notes, especially in the salmon that is currently on the menu, that I can't identify but crave. Everything is prepared perfectly and presented beautifully. The prefixe lunch menu is the best value in town. For around $30 you can have an amazing 3 course meal from a Michelin starred restaurant in an elegant setting!"

  • "I think charging 29.00 dollars for a GLASS of wine is outrageous...The rest of the bill was in line with upscale New Youk City prices. Whe I searched online for the retail price of this wine, the average price was 43.00 per bottle. the mark up for a glass was way over the top."

  • "Decor attractive Service superior Cusine most creative in NYC have eaten at Per Se Boule Daniel Aurielle and if not all the upscale restaurants then most My statement shows that I have had the pleasure of dining at NYC finest Chef Sean Hergot is a genius"

  • "I had one dish--the pasta. I ordered the appetizer size which was $17. The waitress asked if I wanted an entrée portion, and I said sure. She charged me $29 for six ravioli swimming in soupy sauce. Way overpriced for cheese ravioli. My friend had gazpacho, which was good, and the burger. Despite it being restaurant week, we were charged a la carte for everything. They made no effort to help price-wise. Tables are tiny on the first floor, so we were jammed in."

  • "The food was great and so was the service. Unfortunately the chairs had torn seats. The restroom was shabby too."

  • "Mediocre service from start to finish; even had to fill our wine glasses ourselves!"

  • "We dined at JoJo for lunch during restaurant week. Having never been there all of us were very pleased with our choices. The food was delicious, however, the downstairs rooms where we ate was dated and in need of a "facelift"."

  • "The food was very good and service too but could be faster for lunch. This has been here for a long time and it is an old building so I wish they can do something for the ordor."

  • "A New York experience with fine cuisine and ambiance."

  • "Took my girl friend there for lunch for her birthday, did not know it was a restaurant week. We ordered from the restaurant week menu just because it was the right portion, but the service was really tepid. I have to ask three times for lime for my water, and our coffee never came. Anyway, I wish the service is better."

  • "Overall the food was mediocre (not bad but nowhere near as good as I've previously heard) and the seating was very cramped. The diner next to me and I bumped elbows a few times. I'm glad I tried out the restaurant but also extremely thankful it was during retaurant week when prices are moderate."

  • "I went with my family during the restaurant week for dinner. It is not a very big restaurant but it is very classy and romantic inside. I had a salmon dish and it was cooked just about right and their corn pudding sauce was phenomenal. I would definitely go again if I have a chance!"

  • "We eat fairly often at Jean George's Inn at Pound Ridge so were surprised by the TERRIBLE food here. The salad with asparagus had decomposing mesclun that was obvious looking at the plate. Picked out the many bad leaves and placed them on my bread plate, but our server chose to overlook the gross pile. I should have complained but didn't want to disrupt the experience of my guests at the table. Tofu dish was over salted and tomatoes in the pasta were sour. Nothing was even good let alone delicious. Also awkward--the first wine we had was corked, but the person pouring (a manager?) argued about it with my husband. Wine tasting is subjective, but this was apparent. The price was exorbitant. Worst dining experience we can remember."

  • "For the price and the rating, JoJo does not live up to the Jean-Georges reputation. Also, this is only a personal anecdote, but it seemed they placed all of the Asians on the bottom floor. If this may be true, it is in fact a discriminatory policy, one that will turn me off all Jean-Georges restaurants."

  • "quality plus!jojos wa up to its usual quality...had been yearning for a real French omelet and jo jos highlight dessert, the pavkiva,,,both were just great....would've felt better if it were on restaurant week or a choice on the PF, even if with a supplement.."

  • "Went here years ago and remembered it fondly. However, the menu offerings were not special and the prices high. My lamb chops were just well lamb chops served with a smattering of veggies. My friend's salmon was a tiny piece of fish. Also the ambiance has grown a bit tired with age. Only redeeming factor was that the noise level was minimal which is unique in NYC these days."

  • "We had the prix fixe lunch. I had the ravioli appetizer, which needed to be hotter - it was room temp. My friend's peeky toe crabcake was tasty but tiny. The salmon entree was more rare than medium rare, as I'd ordered, however, the corn pudding was the best thing about the meal - sweet & richly corny. The dessert was disappointing. From the online lunch menu, I'd thought we'd have more than 2 choices. The warm chocolate cake was tasty but not hot enough in the center & the financier was a waste of calories. I would have gotten the butterscotch pudding or crunchy profiteroles instead of the financier. Frankly, it felt as tho the kitchen just wanted to get out of there & hadn't paid enough attention to our lunch."

  • "We dined at JoJo during Restaurant Week and were very pleased with the experience. The fennel salad was nice, as were the a la carte crab cakes. The salmon was perfectly cooked and served over a delightful corn pudding. We thought the financier was lackluster but the rest of the meal was superb, including the service."

  • "We were seated upstairs and the tables were impossibly close--the person sitting at the left or right table to ours next to me were so close to me that they were closer to me then my dining companion, across my own table. It's hard not to share your conversations; and privacy is non-existent. The staff is nice, but they are so quick to remove your plate and get you the next course, even before you put your fork down. Food was good, but not what I think of as Upper East Side French dining--a feeling of calm and sophistication."

  • " We visited there with a group of five for dinner. However, the choice of menu is quite limited. For example, the Restaurant Week Menu has only two options and both of them are rather disappointing. Chicken was clocked dry and tasteless and salmon was overcooked too. Assorted vegetables for chicken are good and delicious and the corn dip for salmon was excellent. Wine list is very good. So everything is good except for main meal."

  • "1. After we finished our appetizers, we had to wait 30+ mins for our entrees! 2.I found a piece of plastic(size of my pinkie nail) in the ice cream. Our server did offer us one complementary dessert, but sorry, Jojo, it can't save you from receiving one star from me and my friends."

  • "Great for restaurant week! They wouldn't let us sit upstairs which I would have liked but otherwise reliably good food."

  • "We ordered off the Restaudant Week menu. The salmon dish with corn pudding (amazing) and cherry tomato salad was a palate of flavors, each delicious and complimentary of the others. The shaved fennel salad was very good, but not special (is it possible?). However, the blackberry financier with sweet corn ice cream (also amazing) was a delightful way to end the meal. Fine, creative dishes at Restaurant Week prices - try not to miss it!"

  • "I went here for restaurant week and so was everybody else (or so it seemed). I had the arugula salad which was tasty with the cheese and citrus dressing and the salmon which tasted amazing with the corn pudding. The dessert was the best for last-- the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Everything was delicious, but I felt the restaurant was way too loud."

  • "A friend and I decided to try out JoJo for restaurant week. The food was AMAZING. After my friend and I finished dinner we decided to talk a bit over drinks. Apparently we were holding up the table for the next reservation so we were asked to move to another table and for the inconvenience, we would get a complimentary drink. The manager who asked us to move was very respectful and nice. I will most definitely come back to JoJo."

  • "Jo Jo is a very charming restaurant nicely situated in an Upper East Side Townhouse. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. The menu was very limited - apart from Restaurant Week. Service was good but not great. While excited to experience Jean-Georges 1st restaurant, we came away thinking -- ho hum! Just not memorable and while Restaurant Week coaxed us into making a reservation - this is not the overriding factor in our determination. Menu is very limited. We were seated upstairs which is nice but downstairs is obviously the preferred positioning for regulars and those in-the-kow. Would we come back- probably not - based on this mediocre experience. The food was good but not anything to rave about."

  • "The dirty glass on the door was the first sign that things had gone downhill at this once special and elegant restaurant. The food was nothing special, bland, a little old fashioned, sad for a place where 24 years ago I had one of the best food of my life. Tuna tartare had tendons in it and no seasoning,The shrimp with corn main course was just a huge pile of corn, with some metallic tasting shrimp, and potatoes in it, bland and messy to look at. Berry soup, was just some berries in juice with a tasteless champagne sorbet on top. Someone in the JG organization, needs to check in here. Jojos is no longer up to the standards of Jean Georges, and as the flagship, I would think he would care"

  • "The portion sizes were just right and the preparations were delicious. The only fault I found was that we were asked too many times if everything was ok. We were pleased with our seating because we could talk without difficulty. Some of the other tables did not look to be sufficiently quiet."

  • "Restaurant week is tricky....I think it's a good time to try different restaurants. But is it really a value? My $25 lunch at JoJos was soso to poor. The choices at $25 are sparse -- there are many items on the menu that require $10 supplements and only two entrees at regular Restaurant Week price. Skate, a fish that looks like a stingray and most fisherman throw back is the first choice. Second was greasy chicken with hot sauce, green beans & tasteless gnocchi. The appetizer I had was a delicious sweet tomato salad with red onions. Dessert was jean-george famed chocolate cake and ice cream. The entrees were the lowest cost food items available and not prepared well. Disappointing experience and I would never go back or recommend."

It was a lovely place to celebrate our anniversary. We had brunch and their prix fixe deal was definitely worth it. Next time we will be going back for dinner."
