A word from JoJo
JoJo offers relaxed yet elegant dining on two floors of a quaint, turn-of-the-century brownstone on the Upper East Side. The first of Jean-Georges’ restaurants in New York City, this neighborhood gem opened in 1991 to rave reviews. It was voted best new restaurant of the year by Esquire magazine and has retained its three-star status from the New York Times for 21 years. Regarding the name, JoJo was Chef Jean-Georges’ nickname as a young boy. Jojo is a hospitable setting for a casual dinner, special occasion, or private party. Guests can feel comfortable in jeans or in evening attire. The contemporary French menu still features some well-loved original dishes, including the Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The Restaurant Week menu was delicious and the portions were very generous. The staff was very friendly and welcoming."

  • "My partner and I dine at JoJo fairly often, and when her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters were in town for restaurant week we thought it would be a wonderful place to dine. Great as it always has been, in our estimation, JoJo was even better on this occasion. The restaurant week menu was a superb combination of flavors, textures and the wonderful dark chocolate cake JoJo is famous for! JoJo has become a "don't miss it" for anyone who wants to sample Jean-Georges Vongerichten's talents without the difficult of getting into Jean-Georges!"

  • "Turn a corner onto a quiet street, enter what looks like a private home and go back and sit in a small banquette. Then have some of the best food you will ever enjoy. Be prepared to spend some time, though, service takes it time. No wonder JoJo is full of locals, especially at lunch taking advantage of their prix fixe menu. It's a great three course deal with many choices. If you are in NYC and want a taste of Upper East Side living, here is your opportunity."

  • "The food was outstanding, especially the soup. I'll definitely go back there."

  • "had been craving this place for a while so I have some expectation. I have to say I am fairly disappointed, the antipasta didn't arrive at the same time, which is something very basic. My soup is like a cucumber ginger coup, which taste ok, but the presentation is poor. The berry and the cucumber slide look sad and the waiter poured the soup in. The chicken was over-cooked. Dessert was really good so that makes up a bit of the disappointment. Overall the experience is only OK."

  • "Disappointing evening at JoJo. Arrived just before our 8:00 reservation and were seated promptly. Ordered a bottle of wine and then ordered the salmon on the Restaurant Week menu only to be told that there was no more salmon. The skate that was substituted was not good and the chicken was overdone. Classic JoJo chocolate cake was, as always, delicious. Hadn't been to JOJO in a few years and not sure I would return. Lower level is very dark and dated."

  • "The menu for restaurant week was very good and better yet, so was the food.In past years, many of the restaurant week menus are just fair..not the case. Our table was near a window as requested and it was very pleasant to look out at the trees and brownstones in the neighborhood. I appreciate the fact that the restaurant honored my request."

  • "JoJo is a beautiful restaurant, with a very professional staff and what seems to be a wonderful menu. We say "seems to be" because the Restaurant Week menu, which drew us to JoJo in the first place, was not the same at the restaurant as it was online. The choices turned out to be so simple, and in one case, so poorly prepared that if we closed our eyes, we would've thought we were trapped at some bad wedding reception in Hoboken instead of one of New York's most elegant establishments."

  • "Great food, ambiance, and service. When the restaurant called to reconfirm asked the lady if we could be seated in the upstairs room by the window. She said she would try and the table by the window was available when we arrived. Great service and effort from her and we thank her. Food here is always outstanding. Great tuna roll and superb gaspacho to start and great veal Milanese as our main course. This is an outstanding restauarnt in a very lovely setting whether you sit upstairs or downstairs. Very highly recommended"

  • "I had to see a doctor at Sloan that day, which always makes me uneasy. Since it was restuarant week I thought I would take advantage of it. My daughter worked at Perry St during her time at NYU, and JoJo was near my appointment. The food was just ad good and any other Jean-George resturant I've been too. The menu is prefect, and the service outstanding. We had a wonderful lunch and will be returning."

  • "The address and setting is Upper East Side, the diners for lunch appeared to be older tourists and younger Asians. I was not amused to see/hear the cell phones at the adjoining table but we weren't bothered by loud conversation as they never talked just texted and stared, as was the child in a stoller who watched a movie that although inaudible had flashing images that were hugely intrusive to ambience. Service was good, waiter was knowledgeable and articulate. Food was good but not special. We had lunch at Babbo for my birthday and it was much better (with much worse service). If I needed lunch in the neighborhood, I'd consider stopping in, but I don't anticipate booking there again. Uncomfortable chairs that need to be re-stuffed!"

  • "We have arrived the restaurant 10 minutes before JoJo opened. Although there were staffs in the dining room, no one came to greet us or let us know that we may need to wait a bit. During the meal, we have asked for extra bread but it took 3 requests before we finally got it. The service of JoJo was below standard but the food was good."

  • "The portion of salmon was extremely small. The soup was wonderful. I ordered coffee and was never ask if I wanted a second cup."

  • "Not inexpensive but worth the treat. The food is reliably good to excellent, servers are friendly and capable, and the upstairs is charming, especially near the windows. I have not eaten downstairs, but it seems fine, too."

  • "Having just moved into the neighborhood, we decided to give JoJo a try. We came here a few weeks ago, enjoyed the food and decided we would come back. It was restaurant week. WHAT A MISTAKE! The restaurant was crowded and the tables were so close together, we thought it was a communal table. The food was fair, tasteless and unsatisfying. The wait for the food to come out was interminable. It took over 20-25 minutes for dessert to come out and by that time, we were too annoyed and tired to eat it, so we asked for it to go. The dessert portion was smaller, since they did not include the ice cream that came with it. On the positive side, they did comp us for 2 drinks for our inconvenience. Probably will NOT go back."

  • "I have eaten at JoJo's for many years. For some reason, perhaps because it was restaurant week, the food on my most recent visit was way below par. The salmon was swimming (perhaps I should say drowning) in a sauce that was not at all tasty. Numerous cherry tomatoes covered the sauce. It was not a successful dish. I cannot say that I would recommend this restaurant based on the food, although the staff was gracious and friendly and the atmosphere is charming. But I am very interested in a restaurants's food. Perhaps when restaurant week is over, the food will return to its usual high quality."

  • "This has been one of my favorite restaurants for a long time and they have never failed me with their spectacular food and service. From business lunches to celebrating a milestone birthday with 25 family and friends to a romantic dinner."

  • "Great ambiance, food, wine, and service. The best spot in New York for a truly romantic dinner. Also allows a full evening sit down instead of a race against the clock. A super experience...A plus."

  • "Had not been here for a while. Pleasantly surprised...the food is still of high quality and the service pleasing. This continues to be a New York find."

  • "Restaurant converted townhouse that needs a bit of a facelift. Ask for a seat on the second floor front. Rest of the restaurant is dark or subterranean. Staff friendly."

  • "We had only been to Jojo for brunch but had such a great experience we thought we would try dinner. It was delicious, great portions, service was perfect and we didn't feel rushed. The only minor complaint was that the cocktails were tiny- so much ice and just a few sips. tasty but small. Try the chickpea fries- outstanding!"

  • "We went here for a special birthday. The server we had was inexperienced and lacking in any special attention to us. The restaurant (although attractively pictured on their website) does not look that special in person. The bar is very limited. And if only to make our experience worse, they sat a "motor mouth" next to us who never stopped talking and ruined any ambience the restaurant offered."

  • "The restaurant charges quite a lot for very average food. My friend and I had dinner here and it was almost completely empty. It was early but still.. The ambiance is as unimpressive as the food. Can't complain about the service. But there are so many good restaurants in NY- this one is not worth the time."

  • "Enjoyable birthday celebration. One food mishaps was corrected and the party was given complimentary drink at end of meal. Classy thing to do."

  • "We needed to eat early to make a curtain, two out of four were disabled, everyone was accommodated and both food and wine--a lovely Gewurtztraminer from Alsace--was perfect for all. We've been coming back to JoJo's for many years, and this evening provided all the evidence why."

  • "Went for a date with my girlfriend. Food was nothing short of amazing. Started with the bread, reminiscent of a baguette in paris. Then on to the Sweet Pea soup served out of a tea pot. Delicious and wish that I had a whole tourine of it! Then the tuna app. Perfect. She had duck, and I had lobster. The duck was presented so perfectly, and the puff pastry with the fois gras had the perfect crisp and there was just enough sauce left over for it. The lobster was A-MAZE-ING! Perfect portion. The fingerling potatoes were cooked perfectly, but the roasted corn, thank you for putting so much, it set the lobster off. It was like popcorn at the movies. I cant wait to go back. Im salivating as I re-read this!"

  • "We eat out here every time we're in New York- the quality of the food is completely reliable, the menu updates and is always seasonal, and the experience of the charming brownstone and friendly professional service is always fun. And the chocolate lava cake of course."

  • " Jean George's first restaurant is still a favorite of ours. Pumpkin soup and then chicken for me, risotto of some kind for Dale. All desserts are yum. Staff is terrific. It was quiet last night and we got into a discussion about Shakespeare offerings in NY with our server who was really knowledgeable. I know this sounds unprofessional but it really wasn't."

  • "I went to JoJo's by myself as I was visiting from out of town. It is a charming restaurant and the food was outstanding. I had the halibut with steamed vegetables. It was piping hot and the garlic lemon butter sauce was truly delicious. I had the blueberry crumble for dessert and practically licked my plate. The service was excellent, attentive, prompt, courteous, but unobtrusive. I loved this restaurant!"
