John's Grill has been a San Francisco tradition since 1908. This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammetts, The Maltese Falcon.   • "Had a wonderful meal in late June at the classic John's Grill. The paneling and mid-1900 era pictures on the wall were fun to view. Ambiance was great, a good balance of energy but quiet enough to hold a conversation. Service was excellent and the food was really good. We also appreciated their flexibility with rescheduling our dinner reservation. We will definitely return there when in SF again!"

  • "There are so many trendy restaurants in the Bay Area that sometimes it's easy to overlook the classic joints that have been around for years. Took my wife here for her birthday. I chose this place because I remembered a romantic dinner we had there 25 years ago. The only small negative is that our table for two was very small, but I understand it because the place isn't that big. Service was excellent. Both the waiter and the busboy were very attentive and friendly. Food was very good. I doubt most people even know who Jack LaLaine is, but the salad named for him is fantastic. The grilled snapper was perfect. They also make a perfect martini."

  • "Walked by Johns grill on the way to and from the convention I was attending. Sign jumped out out to me as old school San Francisco. My wife and I tried it. It was as I thought it might be, and more. Food was great and well priced. Had their New York,came out perfect. The live jazz playing while we ate finished off a great night. Will be back next time in town!"

  • "The place was packed and the tables were a little close but the food was prepared to order and served quickly! We started with salad and oysters, yum! For dinner I had a ribeye done medium (slightly on the rare side) and my gf had a new york cooked the same. Our steaks were perfect, cooked thoroughly but still a little pink n bloody! The accompanying veggies and potatos had a really nice seasoning to but not too much so as to hide the flavor of the food, also cooked topeffection. Great menu, wine list, specialty drinks, desert menu, etc... Servers were courteous and attentive as well. Wonderful dining experience, we will DEFINITELY be coming back!"

  • "We were hungry after a long day of shopping and felt like good steak to satisfy the craving. I remembered the John's Steak, what a beauty! I ordered it and bowl of what I think is the best clam chowder in the city...I mean the best. My wife had the petrale sole, which was so moist and flaky I was jealous but I have to say my steak is a can't miss favorite. I highly recommend this place not only for the food but for everything about it, the history, service and location."

  • "Food was pretty good but not great. I had the fish which was really good but it had a sauce of shrimp and crab meat that was lumpy, tasteless and cold. My wife had a steak that was so thin it would have been impossible to cook medium rare, therefor the steak was a bit over done. However it was better than the fish! Service and food was better when we ate downstairs last time!"

  • "Service was wonderful.....oysters were great as was the seafood salad although I feel that it should have been abit more "cold" as it was not . Shrimp cocktail was the best or one of the best that I have had ever....Ciopino was to hubby's liking.....my filet was overlooked and the Bernaise was TOO salty. Other thing that bothered me was the baked potatoe "fixings" came already prepared in those little cups.......sort of lost some ambiance there.....and the food (entree) was just NOT hot! Veggies, baked potatoe and steak were just warm.... BUT I would try them again...just think that they are leaning more on their "past" performances and need to keep a closer eye on quality. Again....service and decor and location was great."

  • "John's Grill is somewhat of an institution, and given the look and feel of the restaurant, I can see why. It definitely has that early 20th Century rich, solid, dark wood, moneyed feel to it. But that's where the nostalgia ends. We ordered mussels as an appetizer. All of them didn't open, which indicates to me, they weren't as fresh as we were led to believe. We ordered the Roquefort Salad; it was overdressed. I ordered the seabass, which was broiled. It might have tasted great, if it hadn't been covered is some sort of sauce. (I can't tell you what it was.) My friend ordered the Porterhouse steak, which she liked very much. I won't go back."

My wife's steak ( medium) was perfect but mine was delivered medium to well done. Upon reflection I should have sent it back but being pressed for time didn't. No complaints about the quality and taste of the food though and the ambience was great."

  • "We met two newly married friends, visiting San Francisco, for lunch hoping to give them a "taste" of the City. They will be residing in the UK, met in Italy. We were a tad disappointed on two counts: first, the noise level was so high we were leaning over our dishes to hear each other at all and even then it was a challenge; second, the food was a disappointment. I only ate a portion of my Jack LaLanne salad and the other entrees were lack luster. My husband has eaten numerous times at John's Grill and thought perhaps the weekend menu differed from the one on the weekend. He was truly disappointed in the menu offerings. We did enjoy the history and went on to have a look at City Books with great delight."

  • "We crossed the Bay Bridge from San Leandro for a special occasion. Our son graduated from 8th grade and he loves seafood and pasta. This is one of my favorite restaurants. He ordered the Lamplighter. So did my younger son and my daughter order the fried prawns. So I guess it's a little kid friendly with some of the dishes, but for older kids not little ones. We had a nice time."

Our server was friendly. The food was okay, but not nearly as good as other steak restaurants. I'm glad we tried it, but we probably won't go back."

Not the caliber of restaurant I remember. Used to rave about this place. Sad to see it down to a mediocre steak house rather than the gem it was."

  • "They walked us right to our table the second we walked through the door-on a busy Saturday evening. The server was prompt, offered good recommendations. The food service was astoundingly fast, faster than I thought would have been possible. Both dishes were excellent, though; the steak was cooked perfectly through the entire steak, and the pasta dish was full of flavor. The server was attentive but not overbearing. The atmosphere was excellent, especially as a big fan of Dashiell Hammett. The live jazz-played through the speakers on the bottom floor-was good atmosphere, & not too loud. The background noise was equally balanced: we carried on our conversation perfectly. Highly Recommended. Pricy, but good for a special occasion like ours."
