A word from Johnny Utah's
In July 2007, New York welcomes Johnny Utah's, the urban cowboy experience, to Rockefeller Center. The Johnny Utah's experience begins with cuisine full of flavors & spices which embody the real meaning of Southwestern food. With hearty recipes of our cultural ancestors, Johnny Utah’s will offer a menu full of zesty Texan BBQ ribs, savory steak fajitas, & authentic Mexican tequila.

Almost every seat in the house has a view of the dining room’s main attraction, Manhattan’s only mechanical bull. Showcasing the full essence of the Southwestern theme, the beast is theatrically surrounded with cascading metal chains & burning candles that echo “rings of fire,” signifying the celebration of the icon. The interior was designed as an interpretation of an old western mining shaft with salvaged antique tiles & pony-hide furniture. Johnny Utah’s is sure to serve as an ideal location for both delicious Southwestern food & drinks, & late night reveling & bull riding.

Diner Reviews
  • "On july 31, 2014 i went to johnny utah with my husband and teen age grandchildren. It us a great fun place and is geared to the mid twenty to early thirty age group. It was lively and is more of a drinking place than an eating place. I ordered the ribs and took one bite and didnt eat them. The girls loved the sliders and wings. My husband had the steak sandwich. Maybe mine was just a bad choice. Overall we had a great time. Wish i was younger and my grandchildren wished they were older. Great time."

  • "Ok food, but the coctails were the best. Too much noice but the bull-riding was fun."

  • "This place was a good choice ONLY because of its location: steps away from Radio City. I had a show to attend afterwards. i would never come here if I didn't have a show at that venue."

  • "Basement dive close to Radio City, as I was seeing Aretha Franklin that night. 1st disappointment: we had just flown in from Hong Kong and were dying for a real Bloody Mary. "We're out of Bloody Mary mix," said the waitress. Apparently there wasn't a real bartender who knew how to make one without the mix. I settled for a Guinness, which had a decent bishop's collar. The fajitas were tasty, although it took far longer than necessary to prepare them. Second disappointment: When we asked for the dessert menu, we were warned "We only have the first two - we're out of the other three." Really? Third disappointment: I needed cash to pay for the car ride back to Philly, but the ATM was broken. On the other hand, Aretha was terrific."

  • "Went with a group of co-workers and had a great time. The food was average but the drinks were on point. The shots were put in a tiny plastic cup that is smaller than the ones you use to rinse your mouth with at the dentist. The overall crowd was very energetic and fun. Not to mention the bull which was pretty intimidating at first but well worth it. "

  • "I've been to Johnny Utah's in the past and it's not a bad place but this visit we didn't have such a great time. The hostess was on the phone when we arrive and didn't even give the courtesy "one moment" signal and talked away for at least 2 more minutes. We were then seated and it took time to get water and menus. However what made this evening a no-go was that soon after we got the menus it felt as if not only the heat went out but a door was open or the AC was on! It got cold and breezy. We looked at the table to the left full of guys and they all started pulling on hoodies so we knew it wasn't just us. We asked the waiter if we could move and was told it was cold everywhere. We left. I was not staying to eat in my coat."

  • "Loud, food is average at best, go for the bar scene and the bull, but not much else."

  • "the restaurant has a terrific ambiance we enjoyed the entertainment other customers provided riding the bull. We ordered ribs and steak but they were out. their soft drink selection was very limited. The waitress was too busy and only came to our table once. we ordered margaritas and they were like soft drinks we had to send them back. if you want to have a drink and have fun with a mechanical bull this is the place not otherwise"

  • "Made reservations here as location close to Radio City Music Hall. Saw the 2 pm show + had time to walk around Rockefeller Center = St. Patrick's, storefronts + tree etc. Waked to entrance + had to go down the steep long flight of stairs to be told about the elevator in hotel next door! I had to climb up the stairs to go with my friends to hotel to go down to restaurant. My reservation advised restaurant handicapped patron included in my party. Feel a note about the hotels elevator should have bee included in my reminder e mail...also restaurant should put on their website."

  • "I regret spending even ten minutes at this location. This was the worst restaurant I have ever experienced. While I do understand that this is a tourist attraction, it should not prevent the company from providing a good experience. The food was nothing special. While making the reservation, I was never informed that we were only allowed to stay in our table for 2 hours, and while this does not sound that bad...it took about 1/2 hour to get drinks from the worst service member I had the displeasure to know. She rarely showed up to the table, made us feel like we were Inconveniencing her. My friend had a happy hour margarita, and when I told her there was no tequila, our waitress said, what do you expect? Worst experience EVER"

  • "Fine if you are going for drinks/happy hour. Food is nothing special at all - I actually think Applebees is better. Waitstaff is lacking- I brought my opentable certificate to redeem and they made us wait 30 mins and pretty much argued that they had never seen one of them before and didnt know what to do with it. They finally accepted it but made us late to the show we had after dinner. I wont go back."

  • "The waitress stated that many of the menu items were no longer served. and we heard the table next to us exclaim, "well then what IS on the menu". we wont be going back anytime soon."

  • "Hilarious if you are ringside to the mechanical bull. My husband and I happened to chose a Friday evening 2 weeks before xmas to go here and at first we almost walked out. The place was packed and the hostess was focused on signing up people to ride the mechanical bull. However once we finally got someone's attention that we had a reservation they moved a group seated with just drinks and gave us what turned out to be almost a ringside seat. We ordered nervously. The salad was actually fine, as was the ribs. The only total miss was the mac and cheese side I ordered. It is a basic BBQ and comfort food menu. Along with the amusement of watching people attempt to stay on the bull it was fun place to eat.Not for foodies"

  • "Touristy Pub Food. Lively Atmosphere. Was there at Christmas, must have been 50 Santa's on a pub crawl. Lots of fun."

  • "We ate dinner here on our trip to Midtown NYC for Christmas season. I was initially a bit concerned about bringing my son to a place that was touted as a hot nightspot with a Mechanical Bull on premises. But most of the food reviews I read were very favorable and it's proximity to many of the sites we planned to see made me give it a shot....OK.. This place is NOT appropriate for kids. It is literally wall-to-wall highly intoxicated 20-somethings (most of which were festively dressed as Santas and his scantily -clad helpers). The noise level is deafening. This is a bar that happens to have table service. It is like being invited to a college frat party.Needless to say, my wife was much less than pleased about my choice. With that said, I"

  • "If you are having a party, are under 30, like super-loud music, mechanical bulls and excessive drinking, this place is heaven. Fun for an event or something totally new, this tourist trap does have "decent" food, kind servers (but service is SLOW as it's hard to move around) and a high energy vibe. It's NOT for conversation or fine dining...bachelor parties or events are 'perfect' for this or if you just miss the south."

  • "I had a really, really good time even though I didn't think the drinks were that good and the food was a little pricey for the taste but the atmosphere made up where the food and drinks left off. I would go more often if the food and drinks improved though. I would recommend for a good time out if you didn't want dinner and only needed a few drinks."

  • "Don't be mislead about the restaurant or the food. This is a bar with food. Your feet will stick to the floor. Burgers are pretty good and the place is fun just know what you are getting into."

  • "My daughter had the chicken fingers, (there was no kids menu but they were happy to accommodate her) and they were great! My son had the sliders which he wasn't entirely crazy about, but the fries were delicious. My husband had the ribs he said they were very good. I had the chicken fajitas and they were the best thing I have had in a restaurant in a very long time. We did not care for their version of the spinach artichoke dip, too much tobacco and too watery. The decor and ambiance was great. There was a mechanical bull, unfortunately no one rode it. There was a very cool room in the back that used to be a vault, still had the old safe deposit boxes...very cool. Did not care for the rest rooms-co-ed."

  • "Nothing special or fancy, catering mainly to visiting tourists. However, the "comfort" food was decent and overall our experience was good."

  • "Food was great, watching people ride (fall off of!) the mechanical bull was very entertaining, and we had a "ring side" seat."

  • "Great food and good service. Very energetic. Fun to watch people ride the mechanical bull. That takes sum guts. But is looked like fun. Highly recommened."

  • "Do ever go before 7:00pm. The mechanical Bull doesn't go on until then. The place is not that nice when the lights are not dimmed for the evening. I would not recomend for kids unitl the bull is on and working. All in all not bad."

  • "Food was not good. I will not be returning to J.U. I over paid on food that wasn't good at all. Actually the food cost more than it's worth."

  • "During the week, bull riding is nonexistent. For my first time there, I was disappointed. Happy Hour is nice."

  • "In this case I tried Johnny Utah's for lunch...definitely not a lunch spot. It's really great in the evening for happy hour and/or dinner, but not a good lunch spot during the week. And for being a TexMex place they need to spice things up a bit - food was kind of bland."
    Dined on 3/15/2011
  • "I had a reservation, and the table we were given wasn't very good. We were placed under the big projection television, with the projection screen hanging between two people at our table. It made getting up and down very difficult. The lighting by the table wasn't great and we had a hard time seeing the menus. But overall, we had a nice time and the food was delicious."

  • "You come to Johnny Utah's for the mechanical bull, but are then surprised that the food is actually good. It is convenient to NBC studios, and seemed to be a popular spot for groups celebrating birthdays, meeting after work, or visiting NYC for the first time. A good experience overall."
    Dined on 2/18/2011
  • "Johnny Utah's was awesome. Great waitress, DJ, and food. The drinks weren't too pricey and the mechanical bull is so much fun. All the girls that went out with me loved it and are planning on going back."
    Dined on 2/11/2011
  • "Johnny Utah's is a southwestern menu. I took two customers for an informal lunch thinking that it would not take the afternoon. Wrong! Table management was poor and the place was not that crowded. I suspect the kitchen, not the food server, messed up. The pulled pork sandwich that I had was only average. Would I visit Johnny Utah's again? No, with all the choices in NYC, this one falls at the bottom. If you are looking for a cowboy place with a riding bull and all of that, this might fit the bill for a fun spot, drinks, bar food and laughs."

  • "The food was much worse than when I have been previously, worst ribs I've had in New York."

  • "Went to watch the Jets playoff game, and the place was packed. There was more then enough seating for everyone, and a ton of T.V.'s. The food and service was great, everyone was very friendly. They also have great drinks specials!!"

  • "Salty food. Waitress not very attentive. Overwrought decor. Aged and dated decor"

  • "The food was tasty, but you're really there for the ambiance, which can be summed up by the following: there is a mechanical bull in the center of the restaurant. Great after work happy hour spot. Went on a Friday and there were 2 bachelorette parties. The service was a bit sparse at first, but the manager was very attentive and we were happy. Only planned to stay for some apps and a few drinks. Ended up staying for hours and riding the bull. Great time!"

  • "We came to Johnny Utah's last minute for a quick bit to watch the Jets game. Because of the fun atmosphere we ended up staying 3 hours! The food was ok but nothing to write home about. I got the Mac and Cheese and was able to bring home half of it for lunch the next day. Our waitress was really sweet and attentive. We were seated right next to the mechanical bull ring which was great! The bull operator is really a talented man who switches the songs and bull movements for each rider. Will definitely be coming back again!"

  • "It's the home of NYC's original mechanical bull so it's hard not to have fun watching customers get thrown off the bull (of course when no one is riding it’s just like being at a Chilli’s). I wouldn't call it a family or kid friendly place but it's great for a group hang out with friends after work. It's very energetic and LOUD. The mixed drinks are pretty good. The menu is basically southwestern style comfort food (not really a place for veggies or dieters). The food isn't Bobby Flay level cuisine but it’s pretty good (much better than the average bar food). All in all Johnny Utah's is an amped up bar version of a Chilli's - Friday's - Applebees style restaurant."
