A word from John J Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel
During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him.

We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants.

As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant.
All of our meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs.
Our produce is local organic or chemical free. We use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs.
We also provide sustainable seafood and support sustainable fisheries.

  • "This is an outstanding restaurant in the heart of Lancaster. Creative and delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts that used in-season ingredients throughout. Local meats and vegetables are prepared in with the flavor of "ethnic" dishes from Asia, the Mediterranean and more. The outside eating area was private, pleasantly quiet and roomy. I would recommend the outside option if the weather permits - you will never know there is a busy road nearby. I'm looking forward to a return visit!"

It was interesting for us that we know many of the farmers that produce the food. They source all fresh, seasonal food. You won't find anything artificial here!"

Only complaint was that the server knew very little about the wines on the wine list, other than offering a taste of one that was available by the glass.   • "We loved JJJ so much that we intend to go back within the week (we're on vacation and cant miss out on going twice - it will be a while until we can get back.) The food was farm fresh and amazing! We tried lots of small plates so we could try more. You know the chefs are amazing when they can make liver and onions a dish that you'll order the second time around (we weren't sure if we'd like it, but just had to try it! It was phenomenal!) The staff were super friendly and helpful when we just couldn't narrow down our options and even coursed things out for us, so we tried thw best dishes together. (My husband and I just shared everything.) My recommendation: if youre in the area - Go to John J Jeffries!"

  • "Our server was excellent-friendly, very attentive without being overbearing and quite knowledgeable of the menu. The appetizers were very good-I had the liver and fried onions and thought it was excellent. My wife had the soup combo which was also very, very good. The main dishes were a little disappointing. The pork plate had the pork a bit tough and the cod dish had the cod a little slimy on the inside. Overall we enjoyed the meal but would probably not rush back to this restaurant."

  • "My wife and I are locals but haven't been to John Jeffries in years. We had an excellent waiter that jumped right in to tell us his favorites and was pleasant and timely throughout the evening. We were hungry, but when you get a night out without kids, you want the evening to last! We stuck with ordering small plates which were creative, delicious and fairly priced. Ordering two separate small plate orders, we were able to share and extend the evening. It also gave us a great exploration of the locally sourced offerings. Great experience and would highly recommend."

The atmosphere is very comfortable -- nice seating, quiet noise level, a sense of privacy, but a bit dark. The service was very attentive but not annoyingly so. Only 2 minor complaints -- we had to request olive oil (as opposed to butter) for the bread, and the waiter's assurance that the wine I ordered was not sweet turned out to be not quite so, although I enjoyed it, and I'm sure I could have sent it back for something else if I'd wished. Nonetheless, these were very minor matters in what was otherwise a truly outstanding dinner that lived up to our recent experiences of food in France. It was different, but at as high a level."

  • "My daughter and I were recently in Lancaster on a mother-daughter shopping trip and dined at John J Jeffries. We arrived 15 mins. early had no problem waiting at the bar enjoying their signature margarita which was outstanding. Our table was ready at our reservation time and we were quickly greeted by our waitress who explained the menu and specials. My daughter decided on 2 small plates . . . a cucumber/tomato salad with mozzarella and also the tacos. I opted for the a pork dish which consisted of a Johnny Cake topped with pulled pork. My meal and my daughter's was absolutely outstanding. We could have come back the next night but decided to try another restaurant. Outstanding food and ambience. We loved it!"

  • "While my wife and I have dined at John J Jeffries on previous occasions, the dinner this past Sunday evening reminded us to consider it more often, even though it is almost 30 miles from our home. The food was delicious, especially since we focused on items from the local farms. I never realized potatoes au gratin could be that good! In addition the service was excellent -- elegant but congenial. While we had our own server to focus on our table, when he was busy with other tables, another server subtly moved in to take care of the next move. Over all, the entire experience was a delightful way to celebrate our wedding anniversary."

  • "We have not been to this restaurant in a few years, and decided to revisit. The food is very good, I appreciated the vegetarian options. Was surprised that the vegetarian stuffed pepper was $20 and only had one pepper, would suggest adding another pepper or moving the dish to small plates, I was starving after dinner! The server was very good even though he brought the wrong appetizer, he apologized when he realized his error and did not charge us for the dish. The female bar tender at the bar was miserable and ignored us most of the time which kind of put a damper on our romantic night out, but the drinks were good and well, I guess we all have bad days. If you are a foodie, you will love this place, give it a try!"

My wife went vegetarian and had a great stuffed pepper. I had the steak and it was cooked perfectly. The staff also did a great job of recognizing my wife's birthday and giving us a very nice table."

  • "Spent a girls weekend at the Lancaster Arts Hotel and enjoyed one of the best meals any of us had ever had at the adjacent John J. Jeffries restaurant. The weather was extraordinary for late July, so we ate on the outdoor patio surrounded by lush flowers, a trickling waterfall, and soft lighting. Every one of our appetizers, entrees and desserts was perfection -- truly fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious. Our server was always nearby should we need anything, but was careful not to be intrusive as we had way too much to chat about since we don't get together often enough. All in all, there was not a single negative to the evening . . . and I'll be returning soon, with my husband this time!"

  • "Have not been to JJJ for a year and have no idea why. The food was imaginative, service impeccable, and outdoor venue awesome. Always leave the restaurant feeling that I ate an inspired and healthy meal. Food, no matter how fine, will never warrant a return visit without similar service and their service is "spot on". The wait-staff performs as a team - a grade A professional team. When in Lancaster do yourself a favor and visit this outstanding restaurant and, weather permitting, enjoy the outdoor venue."

Many small plate options and this is how are table proceeded to try a number of terrific dishes including the steak tartar. The Tres Leches dessert was one of the best I have had.   • "Although there are a plethora of eating establishments ethnic and otherwise, in Lancaster, pa., we have found it difficult to find a restaurant that can surprise us serving excellent food with a varied and creative menu. JJ Jeffries is the only one we frequent on a regular basis. We are particular, and are disdainful of restaurants that insist on rather boring menu's, devoid of any sign of creativity. In fact, most non ethnic menus are suspiciously alike."

  • "My fourth dinner at JJJ. This place is always a home run, the food is exceptional, and the local aspect makes me happy. Our server was informed and accommodating, always there when we needed him and not there when we wanted privacy. The fried green tomato and ceviche small plates were outstanding, matched by the long-roasted beef dish which we shared for the main course. The bar made the lemonade berry drink for us with champagne only, as we don't drink spirits. Sat outside by the stone wall, in view of the fountain, such a lovely setting, and out of direct sunlight."

The menu selection is thoughtful as the ingredients used are fresh, local and there a significant presence of pastured, grass fed meats or wild seafood. Not only are you enjoying a fabulous meal, you are also really nourishing your body."
