A word from John J Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel
During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him.

We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants.

As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant.
All of our meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs.
Our produce is local organic or chemical free. We use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs.
We also provide sustainable seafood and support sustainable fisheries.

This was our first time along with our friends and found the food to be very good, however the portions were a bit small and honestly for a 34.00 ribeye I didn't expect it to be so fatty. I've definitely had better for less. The service was great and very friendly. We arrived about ten minutes ahead of our reservation and had to renain standing at the doorway in the noisy bar area for about ten minutes and that was not enjoyable. I didn't quite understand that since the dining area was open and several open tables since it was early.

Food, service, ambience, were all outstanding. The salad with poached pears was one of the best ever ! Their insistence on local sourcing really seems to pay off in terms of the quality of the food.

My husband and I ate here on Friday night. It was our second time here and it did not disappoint. We both had a wonderful pumpkin soup to start that was wonderful. Hubby had the steak for his entree which he enjoyed and I had the lamb shank that was to die for. The meat literally fell off the bone and the sauce was out of this world. The food here is from farm to table!

We chose John j Jeffries from their attractive web site and positive reviews. Our goal was to try someplace new to celebrate our 43rd anniversary. We were not disappointed, as this is a fantastic restaurant with a very unique menu and service that is second to none. We each ordered Salmon off the large plate and it was very delicious, cooked just right and presented well.

Dinner was so incredibly good on the first night of our stay at the hotel that we went back for our second night. The steak tartare appetizer was crazy good (ask for little or no siracha if you don't like heat...it doesn't list that ingredient on the menu) that we ordered "the truth" (full dinner size portion) the next night. Wow! So fresh, tender, flavorful. Really a delicacy. We also had the braised lamb shank (terrific), duck, poached beet salad, spinach salad (all great) and the vegetarian dish. Neither of us is a vegetarian. It just sounded so delectable that we had to try it. We were wildly impressed with the combo of flavors. This is a must-go when in Lancaster...or make a special trip. It's worth it!

My wife and I enjoyed dinner at the John J Jeffries recently and were impressed with the food and presentation. Staff were knowledgeable and efficient, and the food was for the most part wonderful. I had two small plates, the Shanker beef tacos and the Jim bim bop. She had the shrimp dish and we finished off with a flourless brownie and the chevre cheesecake. The only part of the meal that I had any reservations about was the taco dish, which while well seasoned was too greasy for my taste. The bim bop was very good, lots of interesting flavors and textures while the brownie was also terrific as was the cheesecake.

This was our first time dinning at John J Jeffries. It was my wife's birthday treat and she had been wanting to dine here since reading a short history of the restaurant. We were not disappointed. The food was amazing; the service wonderful, and the ambiance perfect for the occasion. We would especially recommend JJJ for those who are Gluten intolerant or vegetarian; there is something on the menu for all tastes...five stars all round!

This is truly one of the hidden (or not-so hidden) gems of the city of Lancaster. Nestled inside the Arts Hotel, this truly farm to table restaurant is a hit. The menu is full of choices for all types of diets and preferences. Everything is served with a thought to presentation and taste. I really enjoyed the pumpkin soup and the pheasant. The wait service is top notich and the overall noise level was good for a Saturday evening in October. I strongly recommend this restaurant to those who are big on sustainable agriculture and ways to go back to a time when food was not wasted and effort went into working with area and local farmers. The owners/chefs have incorporated a solid way to have a good meal with farm fresh ingredients!

I had friends come in to town from California and others who were local but never been to JJJ. They wanted to go somewhere nice with good food and service. Although there are a few restaurants in Lancaster that qualify, I put JJJ high on the list. We weren't disappointed! The whole evening was fantastic and we intend to go back next time they're in town! (One of the most professional servers I've encountered!)

One of the best restaurants in Lancaster, PA! Don`t expect a mass quantity of food just great food, great service and great drinks. We prefer organic, non GMO, fresh non processed food so if your looking for big quantities of food and cheap drinks head on down to the Hungry Hefner...you know the place...large crowds, noisy, kids running around, bathrooms that need to be tidied up, etc. Big bonus, they serve till 10PM, most places in town roll in the sidewalk by 8 or 9 PM!! 4 stars in our book!!

What a great find! Our first visit to this restaurant. I wish we lived in Lancaster so we could eat here often. Loved the varied and creative drink selection and the dining menu gave lots of food choices for vegetarians. The food is farm to table and it is so fresh! Loved having a taste of soup and bread as a pre dinner treat from the chef. The service is outstanding, the servers really pay attention to your table and your needs.

Our dining at John J Jeffries was fantastic! I had read a lot of great reviews and I figured the food couldn't possibly stand up to my expectations, but everything was so delicious it exceeded them by far! The place was certainly hopping - we had to wait a few minutes to be seated even though we had a reservation, so make sure you make one. The Steak Tartare is one of their specialties, and I would highly recommend trying it if you're adventurous enough. I rarely eat meat, but it was so well done that I ate almost the entire appetizer! We tried some of the house cocktails, and they were fabulous as well. Everyone left pleased and in a great mood. I'm already planning to dine there again as soon as possible!

Especially outstanding were the heirloom tomato gazpacho with marinated fresh shrimp and the honey lavender crene brûlée. Wahoo was very good; Jim bim bob was good but next time I will order something more local.

This ranks among the best restaurants I've eaten in anywhere. Having lived in or near NYC, Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, and being a fan of fine dining that's saying something. Very imaginative menu using locally sourced, organic foods. We stayed with the small plates, ordering four which as it turned out was one more than we might have but it's hard not to try everything. What I saw of the large plates looked equally amazing but I'll have to wait for a return trip, which is definitely in the works.

Came to JJJ with my special someone to celebrate our recent engagement. The menu options were so unique! We could've made a meal by just sharing the small plates. Particularly loved the duo soup and peach tres leches cake. The farm to table connection is apparent by featuring Linden Dale cheeses and Skinny Park Juice teas. Unfortunately our waiter was lackluster compared to the waiters at the two tables adjacent to ours. He didn't offer any suggestions and showed little enthusiasm for this unique Lancaster dining establishment.

I arrived 15 minutes early for my reservation was told there was one party of 2 waiting ahead of us. Great! We took a seat at the bar and ordered two glasses of wine within 15' of the hostess. After enjoying the wine I notice lots of people being seated and asked the hostess if she had forgotten us. She honestly said that she had, and seated us within 5 minutes of that, 30 minutes into the evening. She just seems to be a frantic person, had trouble with the computer system, and was assisted in seating by a 12 year old girl who wasn't dressed for a nice restaurant. The house cab was not very good. The food (the salmon over rice and seasonal veggies) was fabulous. Service was great. -> Stand near the hostess! The 'line' is her waiting list.

This restaurant has two dining areas. They sat us in the small room in the front by the door which had no ambience at all. We had a great waitress who was professional and knowledgeable. However our main courses turned out to be very disappointing. Although the chef wants to be very innovative the dishes are very midiocer.

My wife and I had dinner there while on vacation. The menu and concept sounded great! However, the appetizers (steak tartare and calves liver and onions) tasted "off." The steak meal was good and cooked well, but my wife's coffee encrusted lamb steak tasted like what I would imagine a hardworking laborer to taste/smell like. It was nasty! The best part about the meal was my "Dougie's Dark and Stormy" to which I had 2!!! Not to mention the next day, my wife and I had some stomach issues!!!

We had a wonderful meal at JJJ. Food was delicious, service was fairly attentive (servers cover for eachother), and the overall setting was pleasant. It was a varied crowd though. I think we were expecting a more fine dining audience, but there was a few children and some casual patrons in attendance. Could be due to move in weekend at the college. Overall we definitely will return. Highly recommend.
