A word from John J Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel
During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him.

We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants.

As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant.
All of our meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs.
Our produce is local organic or chemical free. We use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs.
We also provide sustainable seafood and support sustainable fisheries.

  • "*Food was o-k *Ambience was o-k if you don't mind sitting in front of a door with a drape in front of it to hide the door. *Music for "Fine Dining" was Louder then it needed to be.(It should be played just loud enough to hear when the restaurant is relatively quiet. *Called around 1pm the day of reservation to find out if I could bump my reservation from 5:30-6pm.Was told only if I sat outside. We kept the 5:30pm time slot to keep the inside room.WE got there around 5:30, @ 6:30pm they were still asking people who were walking in,Do You want Inside or Outside seating? * Next day we ate ate CHECKERS,Great meal & Service,Nice ambience.would highly recommend over John j Jeffries."

  • "Get ready for a great dinning experience. If it's not rated 5 stars it should be. Started with the some of the best cocktails we have ever had at the bar then moved to the main dinning area. The small plate of lobster and muscles with grits is out stranding. Fried oysters are simply divine . Main course of scallop and grits was the best we ever had. Olivia our server made the intire evening a memorable one ..I would not only compare this restaurant to baltimore's Chareslstons but I would say they have edge. "

  • "We visited John J. Jeffries for the first time with some friends who were visiting from out of town. What a great experience! The food, ambience, and service were excellent. We shared several appetizers. The lobster grits and Shanker were outstanding. Really delicious, well prepared and presented. The dinners of pheasant, salmon, duck and grass fed steak were all cooked to request, seasoned, and presented very nicely. The service was excellent. One of our guests has a food allergy. The server did an outstanding job, knowing the menu and guiding our friend through the various menu options. Lastly an evening dining out would not be complete without dessert. The Maple Crème Brule and Sorbet were to "die for" ! We'll be back."

  • "We dined at the John J Jeffries for the first time, our daughter had recommended it. The food and service were great. The waiter took time to explain the menu items and the food did not disappoint. This is a resturant we will dine at again."

  • "Food is fresh, farm to table style so due to this format the menu often changes so if you look on line, there may be other items offered the day you actually go. Service was great and food delicious"

  • "Had a great meal to celebrate my wife's birthday at John J Jeffries. Too many fun things on the menu to try, but highlights for the group were Pork Belly Love small plate, beet and bacon salad, and the pheasant and duck entrees. Outstanding all the way around. My "4" overall is due to issues on the wine list. List the vintages please. A little more robust wine selection would have been appreciated."

  • "This restaurant is particularly known for its fresh, organic local foods. The meals are artfully and tenderly prepared and are delicious. The ambiance is elegant without being stuffy. Our server was solicitous without being intrusive. We have dined there many times and have always found it to be consistently excellent."

  • "Our small plates were delicious, Pork Belly Love and the 3 tacos. The pork belly was done especially well, tender with delicious savory flavors. For our entrees we had the Jim Bim Bop and a gordita. The Jim Bim Bop was very close to the bib bim bop I grew up eating. The rice was overdone, but Korean food is hard to make, so I'll give them some slack. For dessert we had the Flourless Chocolate Cake. It was so good, I don't think I would try anything else because it might not live up to this cake. The cake was smooth, almost melting in your mouth and airy despite its dense appearance. The cake was the best part of our meal, for sure."

  • "They say they are farm to table and they were. The ambience is unique in the Lancaster Arts Hotel which is itself a very cool destination. The serv ice was really attentive and enthusiastic. The food was different and nicely done. We're from Philadelphia and found the portions to be much larger than one would find in equivalent places here. Some people might like that, I found it slightly daunting. But these guys don't just do sustainable local food, they also do wine, so that was interesting as well. We drank a local wine and had a local port with our cheese. All surprising and fun!"

  • "I had a business dinner and it was our first time at the restaurant. All the food was good except my steak which I felt was close to what I might get at Hoss's. My customer enjoyed his meal and we especially enjoyed the ice cream for desert including Singing Dog Vanilla which was exceptional!"

  • "The menu was not huge, but that didn't make a difference as everything was delicious! I ordered the pork and my partner, the steak. You will appreciate the natural deliciousness, and your senses will too. My partner was basically licking the plate and I was begging for recipes. It was a dark, romantic, and a busy atmosphere so make reservations. We had a full meal with coffee/ treats for 2 persons and it came to about 125 without tip. No complaints...it was THAT good!!!"

  • "Our server, Heather, a student at Millersville, was terrific. Friendly, helpful, courteous and interested in making our dining experience enjoyable. She was very solicitous to our daughter, who was celebrating her 21st birthday. Food was beautifully prepared and presented. Good lighting and tablesettings. We will definitely return."

  • "My son and I were visiting F&M nearby and met up with friends that were also visiting the college and staying at the neighboring hotel. I've been dining in Lancaster for 40 yrs and have to say that the dining options have come a long way! John J Jeffries is a great example of that. The decor leveraged the great brickwork of the building and the food was interesting and well prepared. A definite "do over" for many occasions."

  • "Chef Carson and Cavanaugh rolled out simple hamburgers but in their unique way. Such a common food made into a delicious feast. There is nothing I would not try that these two chefs make. 100% spot on every time. Great food great friendly service. A Lancaster must eat location."

  • "We like the attentive service, menu choices not found everywhere, and a kitchen that really respects its ingredients. The menu offers many small plates as well as larger entrees. The salad of beets, poached carrots, and bacon was delicious. The small plate featuring lobster, mussels, andouille sausage, and tasso ham with grits was a flavor explosion -- wonderful! My companions loved the steak tartare and the mushroom bisque. This was our third visit and we are looking forward to going again."

  • "this restaurant is known for getting food locally when possible and organic all the time. most of the items on their menu were GF. i ordered 3 small plates and felt too full to finish even though they were small, and two of them were veggies. i got stuffed but knew that i was full of goodness."

  • "Four of us dined here after a quilt show in Lancaster. We mainly chose to eat the small plates, consulting with our amazing server on what to choose. At our request, she chose the order of serving the small plates, and we were delighted. The food was all interesting and delicious, the pace leisurely, and the service perfect. Nice wine list, too. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys good food and a lovely setting."

  • "This is a nice restaurant in an area of the country not known for a plethora of find dining. Food was very good but it could be great. oo much demi glace over the vegetables. A lot of restaurants do the food pile with the meat on top and veggies underneath. drowns the flavor. Tasting soup was a root veggie but not available . Just a tasting. I would have ordered it. How about selling a small bowl of the tasting item for a few dollars and see if you want to add it to the menu? Ribs were covering the french fries and cole slaw so the fries were not crispy and neither was the coleslaw. Dessert was delicious. Coffee is served in french press but press is plastic. Most people do not like to use plastic and hot liquids due to leaching."

  • "The meal of mushroom-onion bisque, beet salad, and tenderloin steak was one of the best we've ever had. The food was fresh and prepared with that extra flair that you can't do at home! From start to finish, the waiter was attentive, friendly, and helpful. He even brought us a sip of a type of vodka that we hadn't had before to taste. We felt as if they truly appreciated our business and were glad that we were there. A trip back is in order!"

  • "JJJ continues to consistently deliver with excellent food in a localvore farm to table method. I had the venison which would normally have been a courageous choice but I knew they would have a deft hand. All in our group had excellent entrees, prepared with care and precision. The environment can be a little bit crowded which can mean noisy if folks are actively engaged in conversation. That's the one thing that can make JJJ a less than ideal spot."

  • "We have enjoyed yet another delightful meal at John J Jeffries. This time since neither of us had eaten duck before we choose the duck appetizer and were very pleased as it will allow us to enjoy duck as an entree in the future. We do enjoy the quiet unhurried atmosphere and look forward to our next meal."

  • "This is the second time we've eaten at John J Jeffries and were disappointed again. Wine by the glass is limited and although I tried both the cab franc and merlot, neither was noteworthy and were actually hard to distinguish between. My husband was drinking mixed drinks and not wine, otherwise we could have ordered a bottle and then had a bigger selection. We ordered multiple dishes from the small plates menu and the recurring theme in most of the dishes is too much of the tangy ingredients. I get the whole need to balance with acid, but the greens were so tangy that I actually puckered up with distaste when eating them in the Duck Prosciutto and the Fried Shrimp plates. They try, but miss the mark. Staff is great."

  • "Long time friend from New Jersey met us here for a getaway weekend including staying at Lancaster Arts Hotel in same building. Everything was excellent. Hotel is really cool and John Jeffries food is excellent and on a par with any foodie restaurant anywhere but at same time nicely laid back and reasonably priced."

  • "Though this restaurant is beyond our normal geo-realm, we tried it because we were in the neighborhood for a concert. There were so many attractive items on the "small plates" menu, we made an entire meal of "small plates." The food was incredibly good ... And creative. Just as important, it was very reasonably priced. We WILL return!"
