A word from John J Jeffries at the Lancaster Arts Hotel
During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him.

We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants.

As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant.
All of our meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs.
Our produce is local organic or chemical free. We use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs.
We also provide sustainable seafood and support sustainable fisheries.

Wine and drinks went well with dinner. Only issue was kids running around patio from not one but two tables. Parents issue, not the restaurants but not a kid friendly restaurant or menu either."

  • "This is the 2nd time I have dined at John J Jeffries. This time we sat outdoors shaded under a tree, which was lovely. The food is delicious and the service impeccable. The menu selection is thoughtful as the ingredients used are fresh, local and there a significant presence of pastured, grass fed meats or wild seafood. Not only are you enjoying a fabulous meal, you are also really nourishing your body."

  • " The food quality was superb, portions were generous, and the selections were different but appealing. Our server was very polite, friendly, courteous and helpful. She answered any questions we had about the entrees. We appreciated the fact that everything was farm to table fresh, and grown or raised locally. The choice of a sparkling wine or a free dessert for my son's birthday was a nice touch. The only thing I found lacking was the atmosphere, which I thought was very average. I appreciated being able to reserve a table online, and was very pleased when the time slot we wanted was available. It was very easy to book."

  • "This was our second trip to John J Jeffries. We both tried different items; again everything was outstanding. Mussels, mozzarella salad, risotto, berry salad, house cocktails. Our only regret was that we didn't savor the same things we tried the first time--no room. We will have to go again."

  • "We went for our anniversary dinner and was blown away. We had several small plates and could honestly not decide what we loved best. It was all great. Steak tartare semed to be specialty (it was very special) as was the local tomato salad, scallop serviche, and the soft taco. We had two desserts and they were both great. The service was attentive and spot on. We will be back."

  • "We are from DC and scout restaurants based on their reviews and reputation, typically we are on target with picking a good place for Date Night (which is once a week), but This Particular Friday we were really disappointed in this Lancaster Establishment and wont be back - Late Seating us with our reservation - Appetizer Tomatoes & Mozzarella was good but nothing t - Cut of Meat (steak) I ordered was Chewy, I didn't eat it gave it to my fiancé who will eat anything and the portions were small for the price $32 for Four Scallops - I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend - Hard to find something on the menu that I wanted"

  • "This was my second experience dining at John J. Jeffries. Both were for dinner. I love the menu. Being very conscious of the food that I eat....where it comes from and how it gets to the table is very important to me. So I like the vegetarian options and the fact that the poultry and meat entrees are organic and/or farm raised, grass fed, etc. I've enjoyed both of my dining experiences. Also, very good, knowledgeable staff."

  • "The reviews we read before we picked this restaurant were spot on. The food and service was excellent. We had our 4-year old with us and she enjoyed the meal too. The lobster bisque was flavorful and creamy while the shrimp risotto, beef tartare and pork kimchee salad were awesome. The highlight of the meal was the lavender-honey creme brulee."

  • "I arrived at restaurant opening. Unfortunately I was not asked if I wanted to sit outside and on hindsight it would have been a good night for that. It was disappointing to discover, after I was seated, that i could have been outside. Just did not think of it on my own. Should I have to? I ordered two small plates - a strawberry salad which was wonderful and a shrimp plate with risotto. The shrimp dish was much too salty for my taste. And the accompanying sauce was quite rich. I wanted a seafood dish but only had the choice of a totally raw Turf and Surf (which I did not want) and the shrimp dish. My bone to pick with the chef would be - how about offering a seafood small plate that is minimalistic and very healthy, perhaps salmon."

  • "Wife and I wanted a simple dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The small plates also known as appetizer are actually filling. I ordered pork belly which was amazing and wife had steak tartar also a good dish. Great starters, for our large dishes I ordered the lamb steak which tasted so.tender and fresh and wife had the broiled beef. Very juicy and tender. Service was excellent, we asked for a picture to be taken and she also offered.us champagne to celebrate once we told her our occasion. Overall fantastic dinner and services."

  • "This is a fantastic restaurant in the heart of Lancaster City. The service was fantastic - great wine and dinner suggestions, knowledgeable on the menu items, and very attentive. The food was cooked perfectly. My wife and I started with a cheese plate, which featured some great local cheeses paired with fruit, crostini, nuts. I then had two small plates that were very good: a lobster bisque and beef tartare. A few months ago, I had a plate of beef tartare at Thomas Keller's Bouchon in Las Vegas. While I still prefer the Bouchon version, the plate served at John J. Jeffries was spiced well and held it's own. I finished my dinner with the chicken plate; the chicken and sides were cooked perfectly. Overall, it was a great experience."

  • "I wanted to go to John J Jeffries because the food is organic and locally sourced - my husband and I were so pleased when everything we had turned out to be delicious too. The spinach and strawberry salad was so fresh and flavorful. I had the lamb with cauliflower and potato mash and grilled vegetables - wonderful. My husband had the braised beef and he loved it. Desserts were equally delicious. I had the tres leches cake and my husband had the cheesecake- both yummy. Service could not have been better. It was an overall great dining experience. We are looking forward to returning."

I wasn't able to have a conversation with my wife on our anniversary because every 2 minutes the waitress was asking us if everything was ok, or if we needed anything, or refilling water or something."

  • "John J. Jeffries came well recommended and the meal we had was quite nice, but ... I was not impressed by the flavors in any of the four small plates and dessert we shared. The food was well prepared; but there simply was not the expected star quality. The shrimp in the shrimp and grits were quite small. The lobster in the lobster risotto was a bit chewy. The beef liver was quite flavorful and acceptably tender for beef - not calves - liver. The Jim Bim Bop take on Korean Bi Bim Bop was interesting - especially the use of Forbidden Rice instead of white rice - and nicely spiced; but lacked the variety of ingredients found in the traditional dish. The Trigger Cake dessert was like the rest of the meal; good but not especially notable."

  • "From the moment my fiance and I walked into the restaurant, we felt the professionalism and welcoming feel from the staff. As a first timer at this restaurant, I was impressed to say the least. The hostess gracefully seated us and the flowers that I had delivered prior to were perfectly placed on the table as requested. Kimberly, our server, was relaxed and very professional. From her first introduction I knew this experience was only going to get better! Excellent service, excellent drinks, excellent food (dry-aged sirloin!!!) and let's not forget the desserts! Amazing experience for our one year anniversary, would certainly recommend. Will be returning in the fall this time for the hotel for our wedding night. Can't wait!! Thank you JJJ!"

  • "We went for a special occasion and because we had a gift card, otherwise, it would not be a restaurant we could afford. The food was good but nothing extra ordinary except that you know it is locally grown and organic, which is always more expensive. Portion size was good for those who watch their portion size and it was filling. The servers were the BEST! They were attentive but not obnoxious and wonderful about telling you the entrée selections. Atmosphere was a bit noisy with the bar, would have been quieter without the bar so close. The restaurant area was just right with noise level and it was quite full the night we were there. Overall the experience was wonderful and a place for special occasions."

Service was the best as expected and server was happy to help with questions. They definitely play on the organic thing a bit much but it worked on me. Good place to impress a date."

  • "This was our first visit to JJJ, and it was our 5th anniversary. The staff was very friendly and provided everything we needed. We went for dinner at 6pm on a Saturday night. The food was a little more daring than what we normally eat, and it was delicious. My wife had the salmon and loved it. I had pork gorditas that were fantastic. Dessert was different and good as well with a lavender and honey crème brulee, The French pressed coffee was also excellent. It was fairly quiet as we started dinner, and the dining room started to fill up towards the end. It was a nice atmosphere, and I think we'll try the outdoor seating on our next visit."

  • "My wife and I had a 7:45 reservation that was confirmed with a call from the restaurant. They also asked if we wanted to sit outside, which we did. We got there a few minutes early, and were told it would be about five minutes before we would be sat. Five minutes turned into twenty minutes of us sitting at the bar by the host's station. Eventually we were led to our table, which was inside, by an employee's young daughter. Service while we were seating was okay, but nothing to write home about. The food was very good. I had the duck and my wife had the steak tartare. The duck was good, although the delay in seating us meant I got duck leg instead of breast. It was cooked well, and the small salad and sauce complimented it well."

  • "We loved the farm to-table emphasis from the cocktails to the dessert. Each of us four had different cocktail, different small and large plate. Each was outstanding. Loved the Jeffries Mule cocktail with great kick of fresh ginger. I had the pork belly with fried green tomato appetizer and duck entree-both well presented with an extraordinary accompaniment. Very large portions; we will all be enjoying our entrees again tonight. One of the desserts we chose was simply fresh strawberries--local, in season. I don't think I can go back to imported store-bought berries again. They were heavenly. "

  • "One of our frequent dine out together couples and we had a free Wednesday evening recently, and we suggested John J Jeffries, since they had never been there. The weather was cooperative, do we dined on the patio. The food was amazing, from the appetizers to desserts. The wine list still included a nice Riesling from a Schuylkill county, PA winery, so that was part of the dining package as well. The food is always fresh, and as local as is possible. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who desires a great, freshly prepared meal at a reasonable price."

The farm to table food was first quality and excellently prepared. Service was just right, attentive without being fussy. I would seriously consider making the 75 minute trip from our home for a special occasion meal."
