Diner Reviews
  • "We both share Birthdays (same week) and celebrated at John Ash. It was incredible. The food was fantastic, the Staff was very attentive and the Chef went all out. It was a truly memorable celebration. Highly recommended!!"

  • "One of our favorite restaurants in the US. Visit every time we are in California. Food presentation and preparation is wonderful. The four of us all had different dinners; all we fresh and tasty."

  • "A delicious romantic dinner! Great wine options. Waiter was friendly and knowledgable. The duck was the best my foodie husband had ever enjoyed. My veal Pasta was to die for."

  • "It was tricky finding something open for the Fourth, but they were able to get our party of four in no problem. The waitstaff was attentive and very helpful in answering all our questions and in making sure we were as comfortable as possible. The outdoor seating area was bright and airy--beautiful! The food was well prepared--no gastronomic masterpieces but good food. We were not disappointed. The most impressive parts of the meal were the tidbits provided by the chef as we waited. They were impressive and I would have liked to see more along their lines on the menu."

  • "John Ash does not disappoint but unfortunately, it also does not excite. The service and ambience are consistently good and reliable. The food is not bad but it is not on the same level as Dry Creek Kitchen, Farmhouse Inn or Monti's."

  • "We were celebrating a birthday and found everything to be perfect: food, wine, service. The ambiance fit the occasion beautifully. We love to dine at John Ash."

  • "We received a gift certificate 2 years ago.I am sorry we waited so long to use it. It was our anniversary and wanted a very special experience. We got that and more! Outstanding! Many thanks to my niece and nephew for their amazing gift! Love you both."

  • "Very nice evening--great food with imagination, good service and a beautiful location."

  • "Another outstanding dinner meal at John Ash. Service was great and food outstanding"

  • "My wife and I spent her birthday at the Vintner's Inn. John Ash and Co was on the same property. We had heard about the inn and the restaurant from friends. The service was great, not over bearing but attentive enough. We both loved our meal and the dessert. We plan on returning, hopefully, before my wife's next birthday."

  • "The food was good not great. The ambiance was excellent. The cost was excessive given the quality of the meal. There are better choices in Sonoma County,"

  • "We've been eating at John Ash, off and on, for something like 30 years. We have had some fabulous meals there but sometimes its a complete bust. That was our most recent experience. When you eat at the pizza shack and you get a mediocre meal you say "Oh well" When you drop $300+ on a meal for four you expect something pretty nice and that didn't happen. We ordered three different entrees; two steaks, one lamb "mixed plate" and a pheasant special. Not one of the entrees was above the quality you would expect from the Sizzler or Applebees. There are so many nice restaurants in the area I'm not sure we will ever go back. The environment is nice but when paying $3.25 for a cup of coffee I expect to at least be offered a refill."

  • "The cheese board was fantastic! I had ordered the Lamb, delicious does not even describe it. Make sure you order the lamb sweetbreads to accompany the dish."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Thoroughly enjoyed the food and setting against the vineyards. Great and accommodating staff."
    Dined on 6/9/2014
  • "The food was excellent. We shared the BLT crab starter and was not to sure what to expect, but let's just say, do not skip! I had the pork special with a gnocchi like pasta. Would definitely get again. My wife had the halibut (which of course she graciously gave me a taste). Another winner! The only thing would have been a little longer cook time on the carrots. They where a little raw. Even with that said, they were very fresh. We skipped on desert (plenty full from main course). This was the perfect place for our romantic dinner."

  • "Made a reservation thru open table the day of our dinner. Excellent friendly staff. food was outstanding, as it has been on previous occasions. Nice quiet indoor table with a full view of the outdoor seating and patio. I would highly recommend this venue a great dining experience."

  • "If you're ever in the Santa Rosa area, this is THE place to dine. Located at the Vintners Inn and situated within the vineyards, this is one of our favorite places to dine. The menu is always changing and features hyper-fresh produce. The dishes are always inventive, but comforting, and the service is top-notch. Fantastic wine list, too! "

  • "I want to like ths place.....John Ash amazing....but the night we were there( a party of 6)....asked and asked for water , wine glasses.( we brought our own 3 different), bread....and food( we had theatre at 10PM.)...served at 9:30pm.....they can do better....I will give this another try and then I am done. Every one was nice....just not OK.....I hope Jon Ash is listening.....food is terrific...the other stuff really BAD"

  • "The atmosphere and views were worth the visit. The food was very good and the servers were very attentive and helpful with menu and wine choices. Its a little pricey, but I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a memorable experience."

  • "This was our first time dining here and we were also celebrating or anniversary. The dining room is lovely we had a cozy booth in the corner. The food was excellent . Service was attentive without being imposing We will be back"

  • "I was treating some friends for helping me with a move to CA and wanted it to be special. It was a perfect treat for them. They loved John Ashe; it was their first time there and they plan to use it for special occasions for family and friends."
    Dined on 5/15/2014
  • "Did not like anything we ordered. The food was too oily and really low quality. They even manage to ruin a simple broccoli. It was 50 degrees outside and they got us a table in that was almost outside and we freeze all evening. For the money they charge, I was expecting way better in every sense. I would never ever recommend this restaurant."

  • "We had a large table next to us so service got lost a few times, but the bussers did a good job of trying to fill in. Some of the food was high-end but my frittata was barely Denny's quality. The location and ambiance make it worth it though, we had a lovely Mother's Day overall. "
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "I am convinced that Mother's Day is just not a good day to dine out. We were seated at a very awkward table next to a wall and we had light fixtures literally on top of our heads. The service was less than stellar. The food was of average quality and the delivery was very very slow with no apologies for the long wait for our entrees. There was a wedding party in the back room and I can only guess that that threw off the timing in the kitchen. I would surely not recommend this restaurant. We would have been better off to have our dinner in the bar area."
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "Outstanding place for special occasions! My real score would be 4.5 stars and the main complaint is about price vs. meal execution and portion size. It's certainly worth going if you can afford it, though. "

  • "My sister and i took our mother here Saturday night to celebrate Mother's Day. It was the perfect place as we are all fans of good food, service, and atmosphere. We enjoy celebrating special occasions here. "

  • "My wife and I have been coming here for our anniversary for several years. its not the least expensive place but the quality of food and customer care is awesome. "

  • "The only thing that I would give as a negative was the ribeye was not a great cut - a bit too much connective tissue, also a bit under done. Everything else was excellent. JA is in a beautiful location! The interior and exterior seating are beautiful. JA is an excellent choice, especially for a special occasion."

  • "I give five stars for service and ambiance. For plate presentation two stars were given had the option been available. The menu for my dish: king trumpet mushrooms, sautéed spinach, Cabernet reduction, Redwood Hill smoked goat cheddar twice baked potato. Where were the trumpet mushrooms? What I received were firm, slim slices of something brownish that I assumed were mushrooms. Imagine the beauty of the plate had something resembling trumpet mushrooms (even a few halved lengthwise) had garnished the spinach. Not what I expected from the menu or John Ash. Otherwise it was a pleasant experience. The house wines were excellent."

  • "Lovely place, great food and service but noise level in garden room where we ate was annoyingly noisy! "
    Dined on 4/28/2014
  • "We went there for dinner. Good service. Food is okay but not memorable, and menu is not very imaginative. Very easy to make reservations via Open Table. (If you try to phone for reservations you get a promotional recording and are asked to leave a message at the end.)"

  • "Food and service was great - they undercooked my wife's pork chop- they sent it back (and while far from perfect) took it off the bill and added a free dessert"
    Dined on 4/24/2014
  • "The "fish of the day" was halibut, which was dry and tasteless . The carrots which accompanied were great. My husband's lamb was not given rave reviews either. Not what we expected! Also, we asked for a sommelier to help select the wine. The waiter returned saying he "was on the other side" so he helped us."

  • " On Easter at 1:00 we (2 people) were seated in the main dining room in a dark corner. I looked around and there were lots of tables opened in the outside areas and asked if we could be seated there. The answer was a "curt/rude" NO. …I pointed at a table close to ours but with more sunlight, again "NO"….. The waiter was nice, finally got some drinks and ordered. Food came out within minutes , which is great when you are starving and/or in a hurry. We were neither.. We were there for about an hour and NONE of the outside seats were ever filled. The ironic thing is I have worked as a hostess for years, including John Ash (in its original location) so aware how a hostess has to balance the seating, etc. "

  • "We took our adult children and their spouses to John Ash for Easter. We wanted something special. It exceeded our expectations as usual. During the week days, we will bring friends to the happy hour there. I guess for me, the best part of John Ash is the ambience. The luxurious accommodations, great service, and fine food, nestled in a beautiful area. It is there for us when we want to get out of the hustle and bustle of Healdsburg, yet close enough that we don't feel like we are having to drive far at all. For us, it is our hidden treasure. "

  • "John Ash remains a most pleasant, upscale restaurant that never fails to meet our expectations. The excellent cuisine is complemented by fine service with a nice feeling of the wine country while just on the outskirts of Santa Rosa. We have been dining at John Ash for many many years beginning with their first location in Montgomery Village. It remains a wonderful restaurant for special occasions as well as a perfect quick stop at the bar, known as the Front Room, for a drink and food after work or for an informal evening out. "

  • "We enjoy the many fine restaurants in the Sonoma County wine country. John Ash has been here a long time and our recent visit showed their food rates with the best. The crab fritter appetizer was the tastiest dish in recent memory, perfect in ingredients and cooking. All was good including a nice pinot noir I had never seen for $65. My wife's happy birthday gift from Ash included an exceptional mini creme brulet. Service subtle and excellent. Glad they are close to home. RGW3 - Santa Rosa "
