Diner Reviews
  • "Usually love this place. However the night of July 8 when I complained to manager re:my absolutely flat Prosecco, he argued with me and said he had poured it from a just opened bottle and begrudgingly brought me another glass, which gratefully was totally bubbly and clearly from another bottle. He said "it must have been the glass". He had NO people skills and this was the MANAGER!!!"

  • "There are a number of things that are disappointing about this place. 1. No patio. 2. Real lack of public parking in the area. 3. Summerlicious menu is made up of smaller portions of regular items. 4. Decor is 50s diner meets Captain Highliner. 5. Portions are TINY. 6. I'm easy going when it comes to dress codes, but in my view, any restaurant that has a wine list (even one as disappointing as this), should not allow their serving staff to wear baseball caps. 7. Food is not cheap, which is of course connected to the size of the portions. On the plus side, apparently the oysters were quite tasty and the servers were quite attentive. This place came highly recommended, but in the end, there are better places in the city to get oysters."

  • "It was my second visit to John's and as usual it never disappoints. They had a great summerlicious menu from which we both chose the oysters, fish and chips and lemon tart. All were a hit. The service was fast and attentive and its become a favourite spot."

  • "Excellent service. Great special 3 course lunch menu for $20! Wine by the glass a little pricey, but the beer was reasonable."

  • "We had an 8:30 seating on the first night of Summerlicious and were told, after deciding on the nicoise, that they were all out. Surprised and a little disappointed, we ordered the only other two options available. While waiting we noticed the tables seated after us got bread, but we had not received any. I could have asked for some but our waitress, after taking our orders did not return for the rest of the night. Our food came and it was perfectly acceptable. Nothing bad but nothing to rave about. About 10 minutes in, the table beside us received their orders (they had come in and ordered after us), and to our surprise the nicoise came out. Poor service the whole night really ruined the experience. Would not return."

  • "Toronto is lacking in good centrally located fish restaurants. Now we have one. Nice menu, freshly prepared and moderately priced."

  • "My friend and I went here for lunch on Saturday and were pleasantly surprised by the place. We especially liked that the patio had a secluded beach home feel to it. I especially recommend the shrimp tacos. It had such a light yet savoury taste to it, we are definitely going to bring our significant others to the place soon!"

  • "I went for summerlicious event. The Food quality was not bad, but it was not that great. It was $35 for each. Nonetheless, I was still very hungry when I finished my dinner."

  • "You can't call yourself an oyster house with only 4 - 5 types of oysters on hand. The menu lists a few dozen and only a handful available. We waited 20 mins before our wine came - after the appetizers. It appeared to be understaffed and not very friendly. We'll go back to Pure Spirits for oysters."

  • "I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and we were both a bit disappointed especially because they knew it was a special occasion and gave us lack luster service. Nobody greeted us for about 10 minutes and when she finally did it was very brief and impersonal. I did not expect this kind of service from such a beautiful restaurant. My fish and chips was okay but nothing spectacular, his lobster poutine was just too heavy and should not be served an an entree. I highly doubt we would visit here again."

  • "We were there as a party of 3, tables are quite tight, so you'll have to manage to squeeze yourself in. Our server took our drink orders, cane back with the drinks and we ordered our food. We noticed every table had a bottle of water and bread to start with. Just not ours. It was a busy night and they seemed understaffed. I moved on. A platter of oysters came and the server asked us if we needed thw sauce tray to stay, we said yes, she walked away. Same thing for next table, and server didnt even ask if they needed the sauce tray, just brought one over and started explaining about the sauces. At that point I just felt she is deliverately ignoring us. We could never find her unless she comes by. This was obviously relfected on her tip."

  • "I have eaten here before and it was pretty good. Unfortunately, not this time! Horrible service! No drink order taken for twenty minutes! No order of any kind taken, unless we stopped a passerby on the way to the kitchen. Stuck in the very back corner even though we requested a patio seat and had a reservation. We asked to move and were rudely told, the patio was fully reserved! (It sat empty all night). Honestly, the food was ok, excluding the fact that all of my oysters had bits of shell in them! I thought this was an oyster bar! They can't shuck?! Scallops were delicious if you don't mind paying $25 for three bites. Overall, I am disappointed. $400 bucks for three of us on a girls night. I'm not returning. I'm not down with that...."

  • "Had a great dinner. Food is excellent and our waiter was good, especially with the kids BUT, have the following complaints: 1) Did not bring us bread - other tables did and with hungry children, this is important - we had to ask for it ourselves 2) Steak ordered for one of the kids was overcooked - we ordered medium rare and it came medium well - so had to wait for another one to be made which is not the best when it's a kid waiting 3) We went to try the special that was on for burger week only for them to tell us that they were all out and then serve the burger special to the table beside that sat down after us. That was definitely not cool!"

  • "The manager seemed up tight. The Lobster poutine was not heated through....the cheese curds were not melted...seemed sloppy..thrown together. Like the manager Disappointing for the amount of money we spent!!!"

  • "I've been to this restaurant in the past and had a good experience however this was not the case this time. We booked at 9p.m. RSVP. It took awhile to get our drinks initially and then the service was slow for the first part of our meal. The oysters and our appetizers were great, the main entrees where less so (grilled shrimp and steak & frites). We ended up getting dessert and coffee after our meal which was around 11p.m. and they clearly wanted us to pay up and leave. We had staff come to the table every 5 mins asking if we needed any else to the point where we got annoyed and paid and left. Horrible service experience - ruined the night. "

  • "3rd time here. Oysters were great, but Zee Grill is better for that. Also, J&S doesn't have an oyster list, and the waiters don't memorize what's available, so you get the feeling they buy what they can and then FIFO regardless of variety. Hmm. Service is good, but not great. Scallops with pea purée and fiddleheads was excellent. Will return!"

  • "The food was yummie but the waitress was terrible.....the service was just plain awful! It took over twenty minutes each time we wanted another drink. "

  • "I went with a bunch of foodie friends to this neighborhood find. Food was creative and very tasty, but really small for the high price attached. The service was ok, waitress got overwhelmed with the group and missed a few appies and forgot a dish. Overall the oysters were super fresh, even though they didn't have many since it was monday. "

  • "Great selection of oysters, nice yet laid-back ambiance, good crowd, never felt rushed. We had a couple dozen assorted oysters, tried the shrimp app and the fries. The fries and oysters were delicious, the shrimp were good. I would return."

  • "If you enjoy the freshest of oysters selected daily, or anything else delectable in the straight-from-the-sea line, this is the place to come. Comfortable booths beside big bright windows are my favourite. Charming, welcoming staff. An excellent addition to the Yonge and St. Clair neighbourhood."

  • "The oysters were good, but not outstanding. Only one choice of sparkling wine by the glass, but the Guinness on tap was good and well poured. Wouldn't go back in a hurry, but would probably try again sometime. Certainly the service could be improved on."

  • "A return visit for an early Friday seating and things are already moderately busy. Our server is delightful (friendly, attentive, professional). Stellar oysters. Tailored wine list with nice selection 'by-the-glass'. Notable mains were the Arctic Char and the Mackerel Special - superb texture & flavour. ALL desserts were super. Altho tucked away at a quiet booth in the back, the ambiance becomes overly 'boisterous' (around 8 pm) as we order dessert (translation-we ate our terrific desserts without talking as it was too loud to hold a conversation). No separate bills (as requested in reservation) but that was the only small detail missed. Already making plans to return. Definitely money well spent."

  • "Well shucked and perfectly chilled oysters were a great way to start dinner @ John & Son. We ordered 3dz and they took half an hour to arrive. The resto was pretty busy with staff trying to keep up. Food was good, but the lighting was too low and we had trouble reading the menu clearly. We enjoyed the mains, lobster poutine, scallops & special of halibut cheeks & risotto My dark and stormy was nice and strong w/o being overpowering We will return, hopefully to a less frantic atmosphere"

  • "Have been here several times great neighborhood place, good food and great service always greeted with a smile and a friendly hello, food is prompted hot and tasty, plus priced fair, what else do you want in a restaurant. Great for a casual dinning or business lunch. Now with an expanded bar and take out they will be lots of fish and chips and a larger belt size. Excellent could a third location be coming?"

  • "Our Lettuce Wedge Salad, and oyster sliders were pretty good.... But the grilled shrimp, and lobster poutine both tasted off.... My husband I and were expecting it to be delish, but we both left feeling pretty grossed out. I would try it for lunch for fish and chips, but would not return for dinner."

  • "… but Thursday was an off night. Although we were there very early (7PM) when there weren't many guests, our meals took forever. People arriving after we had ordered were getting there meals before us. Our server was apologetic, but it really was a crazy long time. When entrees arrived, I sent mine back. I ordered the lobster pizza and the rice cakes were so overdone they were inedible. I hesitated at first, seeing as I have never in my life sent a meal back - but it was just so unpleasant I couldn't eat it. Again, the server was apologetic and I we weren't charged for it. I've been to John & Sons many times and I'll go there again. This is the first bad experience I've had. It's too bad that it was my birthday dinner. Wahh!"

  • "Not the tired old menu options many restaurants offer for Winter/Summerlicious, but fresh seafood and well thought out desserts. Had oysters (with a wide range of condiments) as appetizer, fish and chips (with coleslaw, lemon and tartar sauce) as main, chocolate brownie as dessert -- all good. Service was attentive while unobtrusive, which is unfortunately all too rare in Toronto restaurants."

  • "The restaurant although a little small is super cozy and has a very friendly atmosphere about it. The owner himself helped serve and went around making sure all his customers were always content with both the food and their service. The oysters themselves were so so so good! They had an amazing variety of sauces to choose from and their portions were well worth the price from the winterlicious menu! Even the little things like their fries and accompanying sauce was surprisingly way better than many other fast food and sit-in restaurants. If you are looking for a romantic feel this restaurant might not be the best place, but perfect for any social gatherings. Definitely planning on going back and recommending it to all winterlicious go-ers!"

  • "I have been here several times and its consistently good. The service is great and it has a very broad sea food selection (not only oysters as some people tend to think). I definitely recommend this restaurant if you crave seafood."

  • "This is a fantastic spot for a date. The atmosphere is laid back with a touch of elegance. The oysters were fantastic and if you don't know much about oysters the waiters is happy to create a custom platter for you. The server was friendly and helpful, and able to answer all my questions about the menu. My only criticism was a touch to much salt on the entree, but not enough to deter me from going again."
