Diner Reviews
  • "If you enjoy the freshest of oysters selected daily, or anything else delectable in the straight-from-the-sea line, this is the place to come. Comfortable booths beside big bright windows are my favourite. Charming, welcoming staff. An excellent addition to the Yonge and St. Clair neighbourhood."

  • "Fantastic oysters. If you enjoy oysters, this is a great neighbourhood spot to enjoy them with friends."

  • "The oysters were good, but not outstanding. Only one choice of sparkling wine by the glass, but the Guinness on tap was good and well poured. Wouldn't go back in a hurry, but would probably try again sometime. Certainly the service could be improved on."

  • "A return visit for an early Friday seating and things are already moderately busy. Our server is delightful (friendly, attentive, professional). Stellar oysters. Tailored wine list with nice selection 'by-the-glass'. Notable mains were the Arctic Char and the Mackerel Special - superb texture & flavour. ALL desserts were super. Altho tucked away at a quiet booth in the back, the ambiance becomes overly 'boisterous' (around 8 pm) as we order dessert (translation-we ate our terrific desserts without talking as it was too loud to hold a conversation). No separate bills (as requested in reservation) but that was the only small detail missed. Already making plans to return. Definitely money well spent."

  • "Well shucked and perfectly chilled oysters were a great way to start dinner @ John & Son. We ordered 3dz and they took half an hour to arrive. The resto was pretty busy with staff trying to keep up. Food was good, but the lighting was too low and we had trouble reading the menu clearly. We enjoyed the mains, lobster poutine, scallops & special of halibut cheeks & risotto My dark and stormy was nice and strong w/o being overpowering We will return, hopefully to a less frantic atmosphere"

  • "Have been here several times great neighborhood place, good food and great service always greeted with a smile and a friendly hello, food is prompted hot and tasty, plus priced fair, what else do you want in a restaurant. Great for a casual dinning or business lunch. Now with an expanded bar and take out they will be lots of fish and chips and a larger belt size. Excellent could a third location be coming?"

  • "We had a delightful lunch at John & Sons Oyster House, Uptown. So much so that we are having dinner tonight at the Downtown sister location on Temperance Street."

  • "Our Lettuce Wedge Salad, and oyster sliders were pretty good.... But the grilled shrimp, and lobster poutine both tasted off.... My husband I and were expecting it to be delish, but we both left feeling pretty grossed out. I would try it for lunch for fish and chips, but would not return for dinner."

  • "… but Thursday was an off night. Although we were there very early (7PM) when there weren't many guests, our meals took forever. People arriving after we had ordered were getting there meals before us. Our server was apologetic, but it really was a crazy long time. When entrees arrived, I sent mine back. I ordered the lobster pizza and the rice cakes were so overdone they were inedible. I hesitated at first, seeing as I have never in my life sent a meal back - but it was just so unpleasant I couldn't eat it. Again, the server was apologetic and I we weren't charged for it. I've been to John & Sons many times and I'll go there again. This is the first bad experience I've had. It's too bad that it was my birthday dinner. Wahh!"

  • "Not the tired old menu options many restaurants offer for Winter/Summerlicious, but fresh seafood and well thought out desserts. Had oysters (with a wide range of condiments) as appetizer, fish and chips (with coleslaw, lemon and tartar sauce) as main, chocolate brownie as dessert -- all good. Service was attentive while unobtrusive, which is unfortunately all too rare in Toronto restaurants."

  • "The restaurant although a little small is super cozy and has a very friendly atmosphere about it. The owner himself helped serve and went around making sure all his customers were always content with both the food and their service. The oysters themselves were so so so good! They had an amazing variety of sauces to choose from and their portions were well worth the price from the winterlicious menu! Even the little things like their fries and accompanying sauce was surprisingly way better than many other fast food and sit-in restaurants. If you are looking for a romantic feel this restaurant might not be the best place, but perfect for any social gatherings. Definitely planning on going back and recommending it to all winterlicious go-ers!"

  • "Winterlicious experience was friendly amongst staff. Food was wonderful and filling to the stomach! Display of food was appealing. Really nice place to chill and catch up with a friend."

  • "I have been here several times and its consistently good. The service is great and it has a very broad sea food selection (not only oysters as some people tend to think). I definitely recommend this restaurant if you crave seafood."

  • "This is a fantastic spot for a date. The atmosphere is laid back with a touch of elegance. The oysters were fantastic and if you don't know much about oysters the waiters is happy to create a custom platter for you. The server was friendly and helpful, and able to answer all my questions about the menu. My only criticism was a touch to much salt on the entree, but not enough to deter me from going again."

  • "i begin by saying that the best and most filling part of the meal was the bread basket. Over priced and tasteless oysters, small portions plus a ridiculous Krispy creme type doughnut that the waitress highly recommended for dessert, I left the restaurant still hungry and feeling like I had been ripped off."

  • "I had the chowder, mussels and doughnuts for this year's Winterlicious (lunch). The chowder was on just a little thin/runny. I asked the server and he told us that each batch is different. The mussels were cooked well (nearly all mussels were plump). The highlights of the meal were surprisingly the desserts. The maple butter glaze on the doughnuts definitely stood out for me. The pecans gave it some crunch. My friend's ice cream parfait was unique. Citrus olive oil ice cream -- wow! Give me a tub of that!"

  • "Fantastic flavours. Well paired with the salty chips. I wish there was more of a selection of available oysters but I'm willing to accept that the limitations were due to the fact that it was a Winterlicious menu. I do hope they have more available (because the menu was quite extensive ) next time I visit. ! :). Waiter was down to earth and John even came by and chatted. He seemed very proud of his restaurant and was genuinely interested to hear our feedback. Can't wait for our next time!"

  • "Not crazy about the winterlicious menu - would have preferred more choices - and the service this time was not the best! Food was good."

  • "Our entire experience was top notch! From seating to eating, I don't have one bad thing to say. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, and friendly. One of the best servers I've had in a long time. He helped take the experience to the next level. Food was also amazing. Wine suggestion by server was perfect. Oysters had by our group were really fresh and server recommended a great selection. The brownie for dessert was to die for! Will definitely be back!"

  • "Having been around several oyster bars in Toronto, what I like most about John & Sons is that they are not just an oysters bar. They have other food that's very delicious too! The steak (even at medium) was tender and juicy, comparable with some steakhouses in the downtown core. My fish and chips were perfectly fried, the batter did not fall apart and was not too thick. The dishes were generous in both portions and flavour. My mom and I really appreciated John coming over to ask us how we heard about his restaurant and conversing with the diners. Seeing him working the floor with his staff makes me confident that this restaurant can only continue to grow and get bigger in the city under his lead. Look forward to coming back soon!"

  • "Were able to accommodate a last minute reservation. Service was good, food was excellent. Ordered the clam chowder, grilled calamari to share and the black bass special and all were excellent. Would definitely recommend"

  • "Oysters were fabulous, but the selection was less then their usual. Beet salad was tasty, but couldn't finish it after the tuna tartar trio, which was exceptional. Noise level was higher then I like, and the room was filled with women...where are all the men? With all those women eating oysters, you think there would be more then two men in the restaurant."

  • "Delicious seafood, fresh oysters, reasonable prices, huge portions, good drink menu. Friend and I had a dozen oysters, moules frites, and the oyster po'boy, we were both extremely satisfied with our meals. Has nice beach house atmosphere too, very cozy. Really can't wait to go back!"

  • "Last time we gave 5 stars because you can't give 6, this time: ditto. Large variety (12 on the night we went) of delicious oysters, and the cod in miso broth with edamame gives Nobu a run for its money. The service is not as outstanding-6-star-glorious as the food, but still very good, friendly and efficient. Room is well done, with nautical interior bits that are not tacky, which is a miracle in itself."

  • "Service was mediocre at best. My partner pointed out a spelling error on the chalkboard menu (daily specials) to the server who replied that as long as she can pronounce it, it's fine and shrugged. The heat was intolerable: it was well over 80 degrees F and we left rather than stay for an after-dinner drink or desert and coffee. Also very noisy. That said, the food was very good, the menu a little limited but if you like fish and seafood it was fine (not great) and once we got past the initially hostile attitude of the server, things on that end improved. It's a small space and it was packed which made the noise and heat issues more prominent. I would go back, but it won't be top of the list for this kind of restaurant."

  • "A few of us gathered for a late dinner on NYE at John's. I was a first time visitor, as was my wife. We had a fantastic meal. Fresh oysters to start, as chosen by our waiter for us, followed by mains and dessert. The stars of the mains were the "Tuna BLT" and the black cod. Both were excellent. Would also recommend the fries. Not greasy, very fresh. Dessert was a plate of homemade doughnuts that we all shared. A short but good wine list was fine to allow us to pick something dinner appropriate. We are looking forward to a return visit."

  • "We were looking forward to having oysters. The server was great in recommending three different kinds of oysters for us to try. The oyster po'boys were also very good. We were in the middle of our appetizer when our main dishes arrived. Our table was very small and could barely accommodate the appetizer plates and our drinks. We had to move plates around and re-arrange the table in order to fit our main meals onto our table. We had the tuna BLT and an order of the fish and chips for our mains. There was a lot of better on the fish and the tuna was a bit bland. Overall the food was good, the oysters were great but everything else was ok, nothing extremely amazing to write home about!"

  • "This is our first visit at this uptown location and it was a great experience from warm welcome great service, fantastic oysters and the best fish and chips. We also shared calamari and the lobster bowls in lettuce which were very good. Thanks to Ryan and the servers and cooks. We shall return soon"

  • "Recently had a pleasant night out with friends. Oysters were decent, need a little work on condiments, wonton chips with the tuna tartar were delectable. Tuna BLT is excellent traditional "sandwich" an elegant twist. Pan seared sea bass nicely crisped on the outside, bit salty, but flaked nicely and the lightly curried root vegetables made for a nice companion. Bill was a bit steep"

  • "My girlfriend and I went there for lunch the other day and it was fantastic. She had the chowder and the lobster roll and I had the wedge salad and the fish & chips. The food was the freshest I remember ever having at a restaurant. Needless to say we were both floored, highly recommend stopping in."

  • "This dinner was a disaster before it started. We booked a 8:00 table through Open Table. At 6:15 I received a text message asking us to return to the hostess because our table was ready. When we arrived at 8 there wasn't a table for us and the bar was taken up with diners. After 20 minutes we were seated. That's when things got bad. They forgot we were there. Our oysters arrived half an hour after we got their attention. This repeated for the salad course. When our main courses didn't appear we were told it was server error and they would be out in a minute. We had a clear view of the kitchen and pointed out that would be impossible since no one was cooking. The best part of this meal was when we left the restaurant."
