Diner Reviews
  • "This is one of our "special occasion" restaurants in Palm Springs. Never can go wrong with the amazing food. Great tasting and presented so beautifully. Service in the past has been hit or miss to a small degree, but ours was just excellent all the way around at this visit."

  • "Johannes NEVER disappoints, food and service are both amazing"

  • "One of our favorite places in palm springs. Excellent food (just like being in Vienna). The service is top notch. And we love the ambience, a great 'get away' in palm springs."

  • "Johannes is a pleasant surprise in downtown Palm Springs. An unassuming corner location, but the food is consistently excellent - not your usual "surf and turf" tourist fare. The best Wiener schnitzel I have ever had (and I just tried it at Spago in Beverly Hills). For a decadent starter you must try the spaetzle, a German/Austrian version of macaroni and cheese. I had the cold Brussels Sprouts salad - a nice light offset and a friend had the Ahi tartare and raved about it. The service was great. Some locals consider it a bit pricey, but if you want cuisine that will stand up among the best restaurants in major cities, this is one of the only places in PS."

  • "This is the best (and perhaps the only) place to get authentic Austrian schnitzel. I love their jaeger schnitzel. Their brussel sprout salad may not be on the menu but ask for it anyway. It's great!"
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "Not in the kitchen and that is a major problem. Menu has been dumbed down to make it easier for the cooks to make. And the chef/owner is nowhere to be found."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Been going to Johannes for years. I love it when you see the same servers; and house staff; this indicates that they like working there as much as you like eating there! The shaved Brussels sprouts salad is a favorite; as well as the more recently added seafood appetizer. Do *not* miss the Schnitzel!! Already have my next reservation made..."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "Missing the more elaborate previous schnitzel menu and the steady shrimp cocktail that was previously available, new items are great. Service and welcome are fantastic, efficient and warm. The cocktail menu is creative and the wine list notable. Food is delicious, varied and includes a well balanced choice between traditional Austrian Gerichte and more novel libations. Fine dining in Central Palm springs in a very pleasant cadre."

  • "Waited to give this review in hopes that time would ease the unpleasant thoughts and allow me to leave a polite review. Alas, it hasn't. Venison ordered medium rare (I requested pink, was told medium rare was as rare as they would go) arrived with one light pink and one grey chop. Would have said something, but since I was already rebuked for requesting a different champagne ("you saw me open it" after saying that I thought it was a little off - yes, even a new bottle can be off!) I ate it anyway. For the record, aside from the server, everyone else was friendly and welcoming."

  • "They have a glorious shaved brussel sprout salad. Ate off the bar menu - the schnitzel was overbreaded making it a bit tasteless. However, a fairly large portion of this. My dark porter beer cost $15! Could it be the dining room serves better food than the bar area? I've eaten here before and been much more pleased with the food than this time. I don't understand......"

  • "went 3 times in a month - obviously an excellent chef at the helm of this restaurant who has chosen a menu that uses fresh, quality ingredients expertly prepared in the open kitchen. Service is professional and warm. And the martinis are spectacular!! Overall a terrific experience!!"
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "The two soups, the mushroom from the menu, the tomato special, were everything you could ask for. The wine, a German pinot noir was priced fairly and fine. The fish - covina sea bass -- could not have been better prepared; the lobster sauce had some pieces more soggy or chewy than best quality, but the vegetables, especially the fresh peas, were perfect. The lamb chops had a rub to die for, though medium rare came out on the very rare side. Vegetables were great. We sat in the back room, which is quite different from the front room and the view of the street and the bar, more sedate, less exciting, but the food and wine are the thing, and Johannes remains one of the top five restaurants in the Coachella Valley."

  • ", Very brusque service . The hostess with very brusque rough and pushy land lacked charm. Food was good. Everything was rushed. It would've been a nice experience if it were slowed down the portions were very large Would not recommend or go back Not sure why it is so popular."

  • "As always, this an excellent place to eat and celebrate special occasions!"

  • "One of the few restaurants in Palm Springs that has good services, good food, and a big city flair. We go every time we are in Palm Springs and have recommended it to others."

  • "The food was wonderful. The best duck that I have had in decades. Great Wiener schnitzel. Large portions. Very well run and clean. Everything was great. Highly recommend it."

  • "Food was great! It took a pretty long time to get our meals after we ordered, but the server was very nice and even comped our drinks at the end to thank us"

  • "I have been going to Johanna's since 2005. It has always been my favorite place until this last visit. The food is still very good with excellent service but they lost one of their chefs to ZIN. I was disappointed with my appetizer, always get the duck with lentils. This time the duck was over cooked and lentils were hard. They use to have at least one item of wild game on menu but has now been removed. They have now moved to my second choice and ZIN has moved to my first"

  • "I've only had terrific meals at Johannes. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and the food is fantastic. Also, the central location of this restaurant makes it a perfect place to end your day after a stroll or before going out for drinks."

  • "We dine out at least 3 nights a week and Johannes is our favorite restaurant. Friendly, professional service and outstanding food every time."

  • "My wife and I had a good experience in this restaurant. Everything was very good but we were disappointed by the apple strudel. It was suggy and far from being fresh. Nobody in Austria would buy an apple strudel like that (I am from the area and know how an apple strudel supposed to taste and look like)."

  • "Had a first date there.. the date was impressed. Will go back again"

  • "Wow - ALL of our courses were fantastic! The menu is superb..  But try to order something from the nightly specials... What a treat! - We enjoyed a uniquely roasted pepper soup, mixed with the right about of sweetness & spice that made for a perfect blend for a heavenly starter.. (I later learned Johanne regularly does amazing soups..) I ordered off the main menu. The duck.  Crispy duck, prepared with blueberries!   Which was a perfect call... Wow! - I love duck and this was one of my favorite duck dinning experiences that I've tried to date... Deserts are the perfect amount & filled with decadence worthy of topping your meal off with... that & or the port we sipped on too... WE WILL RETURN!  year after year..."

  • "And great wine list. A favorite place to bring out of town guests for a special night out. Don't forget to order Spaetzeln for the table"

  • "Been here in many times and the food keeps getting better. Service is also good although servers are overworked and don't have enough time for each table. Felt rushed by our server who normally has been delightful."

  • "This restaurant is one of our favorites. The food was outstanding, as usual, and the service attentive. Unfortunately, the night we were there the kitchen was slow and it took too long to get our entrees. We hope this is a temporary glitch because we really like Johannes."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "Disappointed when put into the back room which lacks ambiance and any stylish decor. Feels like you are in hidden in a room with No Windows. If you make a reservation make sure you ask for the front room and if unable to be seated there I would recommend waiting until you can be seated in the front. Food that evening was just average we had the Escargot which was tasty but was swimming in an over abundance of sauce served on a large plate. The duck and schnitzel was good and would recommend either of these dishes. Wine list is a bit high in prices and few wines under $50"

  • "Our favorite restaurant in Palm Springs......schnitzel is fabulous.....have never been disappointed. Love to take guests because you know they will leave saying "wow"!"
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "As usual, our meals were superb. This time we opted a shared starter followed by the duck and rack of lamb. We applaud the short menu, so that each dish can be carefully conceived. The wine list and list of digestives is also outstanding. Service can be a bit slow, more in the style of serious restaurants in Europe, but that is fine by us if the end result works, as it consistently does here. We will return."

  • "We decided to order an appetizer, but were informed we needed to put our entire order in before they would bring the appetizer. That way the chef can cook everything with " perfect timing". They brought warm plates for the appetizer, but in 5-10 minutes had to come and retrieve them since they had become cold. The appetizer took a while to come, but we expected our food to arrive shortly. It took FOREVER! By the time it did arrive, we had really lost our appetites, especially for heavy schnitzel. This was a big disappointment given the fact that we arrived at 6:30 and they were not even busy until 7:30. We finally ate around 8:30. This was our first night there and were dealing with a big time change, so 8:30 was very late for us."

  • "We were seated in a back room. Would have preferred window seating. The mushroom soup was delicious. The service was slow. We will try it another time."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "We enjoyed a later evening Valentine dinner at Johannes. The front desk manager was smiling and friendly (as usual) and happily gave us a preferred table. We were delighted to learn that the full menu was available, even on VDay and ordered a variety of things to share...all wonderfully prepared, (the 1/2 Duck...wow!). Our only quibble is that our server was handling far too many tables to be attentive, and actually carried a bit of attitude to boot. Her "style" just seemed to clash with the overall PS/Johannes vibe. We were bid a warm "good evening" by the manager upon departing, a nice gesture to wrap up a mostly enjoyable dinner!"

  • "Johannes looks like nothing special from the outside, but when you enter you join a new world of exceptional service, amazing win list, and intimate dining. Take advantage of the chef's love for fresh herbs and their now classic special th Brussels sprout salad. If you like delicious sauces used to elevate the main ingredient, Johannes is your place!"

  • "We had our Christmas night dinner at Johannes during our recent visit to Palm Springs. Though the menu selection was limited for Christmas, we still had a delicious dinner with great service."

  • "Superb dining treat, second time back. Ate the Fluke and shrimp special and it was just beautifully prepared and presented. the flavors were delicious. Not forgetting to mention the hardy cocktails I enjoyed so much. Looking forward to returning again soon."

  • "Excellent food and generous portions with enough to have leftovers for lunch the next day. We always eat here when we are in Palm Springs and have recommended it to many friends."

  • "I have a small house in PS and also live in LA and Johannes is one of the few places that have the kind of quality that you get in the best LA restaurants. It's a gem and never fails to deliver. I usually end up eating there every trip I take to PS. The duck is to die for but frankly everything is good! The small intimate room makes you feel that your in a private club. Also great, well priced wine list. I'm grateful it's in Palm Springs."

  • "We ate a variety of dishes throughout the night across the menu. I ordered a special brusselsprout salad that was very tasty and fresh. Generous portions without being too large. Both fish and veal dishes were carefully prepared and well balanced in flavor. Slightly heavy on salt in the sauces. Approach is truly modern with an emphasis on fresh and light ingredients. Apple strudel for desert is traditional and exceptional, but other deserts we sampled were equally tasty. Nice wine list too. Service was good and knowledgeable about ingredients etc for our dietary needs."

  • "This is a delicious restaurant, with food lovingly prepared by an extraordinarily accomplished chef. The BEST waitres in Palm Springs, Barry, took great care of us. Standouts: Brussels sprout salad, lamb chops, and of course, the wienerschnitzel. Bravo."

  • "we have loved Johannes from the first time we dined there about 6 years ago. It is quite a trec from Indian Wells , but, we think it is worth it. the food has always been innovative, interesting and delicious! The cocktails are fun and interesting. the service is professional and attentive. we highly recommend Johannes for a fine dining experience without all the glitz!"
