I went recently to NYC and followed the Zagat slavishly (DBGB, Publix, American Kitchen, Modern et al); the only restaurants with EQUAL or slightly better in Zagat food rating were the Thomas Keller, Daniel Bouloud and Mario Batali flagship places at 4-7 times as much expense as Johannes and almost impossible to get into. Good work!! Of course we will return - how about a branch in Hermosa Beach?
The waiters and waitress were excellent, giving attention only when needed. Before going there, we thought it might be overpriced and stuffy. It wasRestaurant Week, so a good time to give it a try. I ordered from the Restaurant Week menu, my husband off the regular one. Both of us had wonderful meals. I had an outstanding(!) cerviche in coconut milk, lemongrass, and ginger sauce. Then a very generous portion of beef tenderloin in wine demiglace. My husband had a roasted beet salad, and for an entree the chicken wienerschtzel, which he said was wonderful. Our deserts (mine a chesnut flan, husband's a dried-fruit bread pudding) were a little disappointing---not sweet enough. But overall, a great meal. It is in fact the best meal that we've ever had anywhere in the world. Johannes, the owner, prepares dishes that are exceptional, the presentation also exceptional, and the tastes linger on the tongue for a long time. This meal, priced at 38 dollars for Restaurant Week, was priceless and could have easily been a bargain at 100 dollars or more.

We shared an amazing Endive salad and a cold avocado/cucumber soup garnished with crab. Yummy!
Since we were both in the mood for "comfort food", we both had Schnitzel. Mine made with veal and my friend's, chicken.
Crispy and very flavorful. The meat was not over cooked and was moist and tender.
For desert, they brought out a large plate with "Happy Birthday" written in Raspberry Coulis. This is our favorite and best restaurant to eat at in PS. The food is absolutely the best and we have tried numerous items on the menu. The service is always great and they are very friendly. The ambience is very relaxing. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone that visits PS. A visit in PS without a stop at Johannes just wouldn't be the same. Johannes deserves 5 stars all across the board. All the food is great but my favorite item is the Escargot. This trip I also had the Wiener Schnitzel and it was delicious. The servers are always courteous and knowledgeable - my only complaint; I've repeatedly experienced inconsistent service due to a lack of adequate coverage for the number of seated tables.

The only issue is that it can get quite loud in the front room when it is packed (as it was on this night). So conversations can get quite difficult when the restaurant is full. The other areas of the restaurant probably aren't affected as much by the noise.
