Diner Reviews
  • "The ambience is great, there seems to be a buzz when you walk into the place with its bar scene up front and nicely layed out dining area. However, that is where it goes down. The buzz about the stone crabs might be overated. The crabcake does not live up to regional standards. I ordered the bone in filet, and while admittedly informing me that I could have had the last of such cut for the evening, the chef charred the outside too much while the internal temp was rare. I asked for medium but could not get a do-over as I took the last cut. Also asked for truffle butter and got a poor attempt at that. The green beans and potatoes were servicable. However the staff was attentive and tried their hand at making recommendations."

  • "It started out in the lobby where we were pleasantly greeted. Every one was friendly hospitable. Our waiter and the staff that served our table was absolutely magnificent. The food and drinks were perfect - it truly was a wonderful evening to celebrate. five star."

  • "The food and device are superb. Highly recommend: seafood chopped salad, grilled fisherman's platter, and seared tuna. Be careful not to over indulge on the mini bialys."

  • "I think the service and ambience is impeccable. The main dishes were meh. The desert was amazing! Of course, I still haven't tried their stone crabs. I think is definitely a D.C. spot to see and be seen by the political and governmental movers and shakers, but if you are a bonafide foodie, then don't feel the need to go out of the way to get a taste."

  • "If you're familiar with Joe's in Miami, you'll find the DC version similar but different. The food and service are still fantastic, but the prices are a bit higher and the ambiance is a bit fancier. The bar looks inviting and takes up the entire first room of the restaurant with an upbeat, classy vibe. The option to make reservations is definitely a plus."

  • "I had been to Joe's in Chicago and I was very excited that they opened a restaurant in DC. We went for my Birthday. My wife was VERY thrilled when we pulled up. The service was great. We spent a long time at our table and our server was attentive, but never in a rush. The food was outstanding. Of course we had the largest stone crab claws and they were perfect. The seafood chopped salad is the regular chopped salad covered with a lot of seafood and it was delicious. Even though we were full, we had to try the steak, so we split a filet which was prepared perfectly and probably one of the best steaks I have had in a while. The creamed spinach is better than any other restaurants version. I am looking forward to coming back."

  • "You cannot beat Joe's for stone crabs! The oysters and sides, and key lime pie were first class. The service was excellent and the place is very nice, as part of the old bank restoration. Good plsce, classier even than the original in Miami Beach!"

  • "the food was okay...served room termperature/cold and our server never came by to check on us once the food was served so we ate it. for the prices i thought the portions were small. most of the food was tasty and i love the lettuce entertain you group for it's attention to gluten-free dining, but this time was disappointing. mediocre at best. i can't imagine when or why i would go back."

  • "3rd Joes restaurant we have been at - Chicago, Las Vegas and now D C. such a wonderful restaurant but the check in was far from The typical Joe's excellent service. I understand about their strick seating requirements -all must be available to count eyeballs! Omg can't sit down till our daughter returned from the Restroom! Greeter had already seen her. What's the difference if we gotten seated, ordered a bottle of wine and had started a very nice evening . I don't see the point here. 3 days later and still aggravated."

  • "Creamed spinach side is best we have ever had. Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection. My wife's chopped sirloin was overcooked but was moist and very tasty. Chopped vegetable salad was excellent and plenty for two adults. This was a very good place to celebrate my wife's birthday. Several other tables were doing the same either in groups or as single couples like us. She got her favorite dessert and they also provide a dessert complete with candle for her. We'll be back for the spinach side, crab cakes and king or stone crabs."

  • "Didn't care for prices and food over priced & over rated."

  • "the food was very good. Our waiter was very good but before dinner I sat in the bar area and waited over 20 minutes before someone came up to me to ask what I wanted to drink. Also, the maitre d refused to seat us until our entire party was present. Considering that 2 out of 3 of us were there exactly on time for our reservation and that we would have added to their revenue by ordering drinks while we waited, as opposed to ordering zero drinks while standing and waiting, I think this is a very short-sighted policy. Also, overall it looked like there was some sort of staffing problem."

  • "This was my first visit and I wasn't sure what to expect. We ordered the Stone Crab lunch with hash browns, coleslaw and key lime pie for dessert. It was excellent -- a great value for the price! The best part of the experience was our server, Bryan. The restaurant was very busy but we had an excellent corner table and Bryan took very good care of us! I'll definitely recommend Joe's to my many DC friends and look forward to going back!"

  • "Unfortunately, Joe's comes off more as a ripoff than fine dining. I'm not a fan of restaurants who charge separately for their side dishes and particularly those where the side dish is awful. The potatoes Lyonnaise were terrible. Isn't composing the entire plate part of the culinary art? Not at Joe's apparently. We had the stone crab claws as an appetizer and they were very good. Then the King Crab claws which were also very good, but at $70 (without any sides) is just over the top. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the seafood was excellent. But overall the restaurant is just over-priced for what they're selling. I'd also echo other reviewers comments about the lackluster service."

  • "Really enjoyed our visit to Joe's Stone Crab for my wife's birthday. Service was incredibly attentive and our meal was delicious from start to finish. The restaurant is probably too expensive for us to visit regularly, but it was perfect for a special occasion. Because of the stone crabs in particular, the menu is a little different from anything else you might find in DC. This dinner absolutely made my wife's birthday!"

  • "Ate at the restaurant for a family celebration and I couldn't be more please with the entire evening. The service was exceptional from Charles at the bar, to everyone else in the restaurant. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for good food, in a nice relaxing atmosphere, with exceptional service."

  • "This was my was my first visit but definitely not my last. The food was just awesome and I don't say that about many places. I had the stone crabs I thought it was going weird being that they are served cold but they were delicious . I also had the lobster stuffed sole not my normal taste for fish but still good with the creamed spinach and mashe potatoes. The desert is to die for pie just isn't pie anymore when you have it at Joes. The chocolate fudge pie is a must have I was in heaven. Also tried the apple pie very delicious. When you add impeccable service to that why would you not visit Joes!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 18th anniversary at Joe's. I am mobile challenged and everyone was accommodating from the valet to maitre 'd to the wait staff. It was a nice touch as we were offered a glass of champagne once we were seated. Food was excellent and cooked to our satisfaction. As a finisher, we were given a dessert with a candle for our anniversary. Top notch for a new restraurant."

  • "Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab in Washington, DC has the best stone crabs you can get outside of Florida. The service is 5-star and so is the food and the ambiance. If you're looking for a seafood treat, make your way to Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab for their chilled stone crabs with their signature mustard sauce. Your palate will be glad you did!"

  • "It was Monday, March 31 and I had been waiting weeks to introduce two of my dearest friends to Joe's Seafood. All three of us are foodies and I new that they would enjoy the food, first-class service and ambience- all in that order. We recieved all at the front desk, at the bar and from the maitre d', but that is where it stopped. From the time we sat down in the main dirning room, the service was removed, like your coat at the door! Our waiter was pre-occupied from the onset. If you are busy, having our entrees arrive 15 minutes before our two sides, was inexcusable. I had to inquire three times. In the end, the server made ammends by removing the sides & offering a free desserts. Better service would have been more appreciated."

  • "WE all had the Alaskan King Crab legs and they were the best I have ever eaten and cracked at our table and served up ice cold,. The service was the best, not too intrusive but always there is we needed something. Waiter was very professional but down to earth nice. Will go again and have already recommended to many of my friends. In fact, I have already booked a private room for a dinner party in one of their beautiful private dining rooms."

  • "Our small casual group of three was made to feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant! All the wait staff were so attentive and gave us great recommendations regarding everything on the wonderful menu! Absolutely LOVED the stone crab and sides of spinach and macaroni and cheese we ordered, as well as the coconut cream pie and key lime pie we had for dessert! Absolutely wonderful experience!"

  • "The food at Joe's is fantastic. You can't take that away from them. What is lack luster is the service. I will say that the host was kind and accommodating even though the restaurant was running 30 minutes behind on our reservation. The bartender was crude and unwelcoming. For $22/glass of champagne and the fact that I was ordering 8 simple drinks, he should have been thrilled. And if you're going to check my ID, at least say Happy Birthday. Our server was kind but not too involved. I expected more out of a server that has a table of 10 and a vastly impressive menu to represent. Blah on service but cheers for the food. We were celebrating my birthday and our engagement with a group of ten friends."

  • "Expensive but worth it. This is for a special occasion. The food was outstanding. I had Dover sole as good as the sole I had in Dover. Drink prices were normal for DC. Entrees were expensive but worth it. Strawberry/rhubarb pie was the best we have ever had. Delicate flavors, nice crust."

  • "The first visit to Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab exceeded all of my expectations. From the maitre d' to the coat check attendant to the wait staff...I was very pleased with the attentiveness to the customer. Our waiter, Ryan, sold us on every dish about which we inquired. The food selections were phenomenal and seasoned spectacularly. The cocktail and wine selections were great as well. We had quite the experience for 1.5 hours. I cannot wait to go back."

  • "A little bit of Miami Beach comes to Washington! Great seafood. Love the "fried sweets" and creamed spinach. Superb Key Lime pie. And what a convenience that they take reservations (unlike the original location in Miami Beach)."

  • "The restaurant has a good energy, but our waiter seemed like he didn't care from the beginning. He was put off that our third diner was stuck in traffic, even though we ordered drinks (many) and apps while waiting. So we weren't just hogging the table. The food was good. My steak was a bit overcooked, but I would attribute it more to the server than anything else. I will give it one more chance."

  • "Food was excellent and for the location the price was less than expected. Service was outstanding; from the dinner and wine recommendations to the attentiveness they were all spot on. There is a lively bar area that has plenty of seating and food service and then a separate large main dining area which is quiet enough to carry on conversations. Have not tried the bar food but if it's anything like the main dining area you wont be disappointed."

  • "For as many people as you have working at this restaurant, the service was slow. Your policy if not seating a party until everyone has arrived is insured and counter productive. When in Rome, do as the Romans....this is DC, not Miami, you can put the ear peices, over the top attire and poorly thought out rules away and focus on trying to cook a proper steak. 4 in out party ordered steak and none of them were good. I sent mine back only to receive a worse cut, that was drier, with less flavor. I'm a native Floridian and have enjoy the Miami location for years. That being said, this was my third visit and likely my last in DC."

  • "It seems this restaurant was only open for 7 weeks, but, yet it seemed like it was there forever. From the time you enter the restaurant until you left, the staff was professional, friendly and part of a well oiled machine. The menu had a large selection of seafood and steaks, with an ample selection of sides and deserts. Our party of four had three seafood entrees and one steak, and each was done to perfection. Our waitress Martha was knowledgeable, offered menu selections, and was very attentive. This is a great opportunity for Washington DC to enjoy the Joe's Stone Crab experience as a nice alternative to Morton's, Ruths Chris and other fine restaurants. After dining in their Miami and Las Vegas restaurants this is definitely on par."
