Diner Reviews
  • "We chose Joe Fish knowing it opened only a couple weeks prior to our reservation. The energy was buzzing and the amount of staff was staggering. We counted 40 people in white coats. So we arrived on time at 8:45 and waited 30 minutes when finally the hostess invited us to the bar for wine and oysters on the house. We finally sat down at our table close to 10pm. While I would typically say an 1:15 wait beyond a reservation time is unacceptable, I believe the staff here, including Joe himself, wanted to ensure we had a great time and we did. I sincerely hope they can manage the pace in turning tables moving forward, but we'll cut them some slack being that they're new. Portion sizes are generous and quality was excellent."

  • "A must for seafood in Chicago. One of the best we have been to in many years. Excellent cuisine, knowledgeable staff, they do not rush the experience."

  • "Had a business dinner here last night. The decor was a refreshing change from most seafood places. There is a nice mix of hip and traditional. Service was excellent. Oysters were outstanding and the lobster risotto was excellent. Very enjoyable all the way around. It was a bit pricey but I didn't feel cheated. I will definitely go back."

  • "Our first visit was a great one! Excellent food, service and ambiance. Branzino and perch were perfectly cooked and delicious. Oysters Rockerfeller and tomato, blue cheese, bacon and onion ring (nice twist) salad were also very good. French fries cam with some great dipping sauces, but the fries were mostly small pieces, making them hard to pick up and dip. We'll definitely return to explore the menu further."

  • "Wish it was great; it wasn't. Perhaps they will work the kinks out, but there were far too many staff, bumping in to each other all over the restaurant, yet our waiter seemed to be visiting the restaurant for the very first time. Seemed entirely unfamiliar with the menu. Very friendly, as were the 2- managers that stopped by to see how we were doing, but not an experience I wish to repeat anytime soon. Location will probably mean this gets a big tourist crowd, but not nearly as good as I had hoped. Oh, the food? Pretty good, is as best as I could say."

  • "My brother was visiting from out of state. We needed a last minute delicious dinner. I got reservations on Open Table and was at the restaurant in minutes. We were seated immediately. Food was VERY GOOD but seemed over priced. I enjoyed it but I won't run back. The crab cake appetizer was HUGE and wonderful. I would order less food next time."

  • "The previous reviews were right, the service at Joe Fish needs a lot of work and the overall experience left us all quite disappointed (missing menus, empty glasses, spacey server, slow service). The food would probably have been better if it was hot, not just a warm. We were all very hungry so by the time we got our food (which came before the wine), we felt that it was just just ok. On a positive note, the bar area is nice and would be worth it to go for a drink with friends."

  • "There are dozens of steakhouses, but only a handful of truly great seafood houses in Chicago, Joe Fish has that potential, IF they can fix some of the gliches associated with opening a new restuarant, such as getting people seated reasonably proximate to their scheduled dining time...and consistent service, lots of folks running around but not many seemed to know what they were doing....AND the venue is too small based on the crowds. But the food is the real thing, fresh, good portions and not over the top pricing."

  • "Hubs and I loved the Octopus Salad. Great service. Good wine list. Love the floor to ceiling windows -- it will be really nice when the weather warms and they can open up the patio."

  • "Upon entering the hostess stand was packed with 4 people working but no one knew what was going on. Since our table wasn't ready we should have been asked to have a drink at the bar but we were told nothing and then another hostess asked us if we had a reservation. We ended up sitting at a high top table in the bar. Granted it wasn't easy to hear the waiter, or for him to hear us, because the music was a little too loud, our order was messed up Wrong food and drink were served. The food was fine but nothing stuck out as delicious. If you do go I would recommend ordering off the 'per piece' menu. The bang bang biscuit was good but the poached lobster salad had way too much dressing, or what would call mayo."

  • "Found this new spot at the last minute. Fifth day open. Amazingly well executed service and food for the fifth day. Space is great! Someone needs to look at their cocktail pricing...two dollar bump for "on the rocks" when the scotch is already a meager pour? Has potential to be a great Chicago place."
