Diner Reviews
  • "We found out when we arrived that it was the first night of the new menu, but we would not have known it otherwise. Service, food, hospitality were all great. We will be back!"

  • "I booked a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday. I was a little skeptical, 4 courses for $30? And BYO? I was expecting either the dishes to be tiny or not mediocre. The theme of the menu was mediterranean. We each ordered an item we could try/share. I was definitely surprised with everything that came out. I enjoyed everything: The Sheppard's Salad and Shrimp Pil-Pil we stand out starters. I had the Lamb. I expected the dish to be 'spicier' but the lamb itself was extremely tender and delicious and the whole meal was very filling. Let me finish by complimenting the pastry chef. OMG desserts...They gave us an extra dessert for my bf's birthday. They were all incredible! Service was friendly and attentive. Definitely would come back!"

  • "This is a restaurant school and feedback is important to them. Ambience is less than average: large open room with no cushion for sound. A few tables in a large room does not make for an intimate or exciting experience. Waiter tried hard, but was not accurate about the food. Food was interesting, but spotty. My dining partner loved it. I thought it lacked good texture and flavor and wasn't terribly impressed with several of the courses. I liked the innovative ice cream desert. Because it is a restaurant school, the owner wanted honest feedback. When we gave our opinion, he gave us back the groupon that I had used, telling us to come back. So our meal was free. That was a very nice gesture and we will go back to try it again."

  • "The staff was very pleasant. The ambiance & service was good. The portions were very adequate, but my food had very little taste. I don't like spicy food, but the steak had almost no taste and the whipped cream served with the strawberries was also tasteless. My wife' Cauliflower soup was excellent, as was her Greek salad, and her Phyllo custard dessert were good."

  • "It was a lot of fun for adventurous foodies to try different foods from different countries. No one rushed us to leave. We were able to talk, enjoy food from various countries we had never had before and decide whether we wanted to travel to those countries! Our waiter could not have been more friendly and personable!"

  • "with groupon you can't beat this deal especially on the way to the Phillies game. I would go back if convenient. I don't live nearby."

  • "I'm so glad that this restaurant was featured on Groupon. JNA has become our semi-annual get-together with friends. There's always a nice selection of food, and everyone is so accommodating. The current menu of Mediterranean fare offered courses from four countries. We each (the four of us) ordered something different, and all were very happy with our choices. The meal was delicious. What a great find!!!"

  • "We went to JNA for our twentieth anniversary celebration. The food was excellent, with choices from many different countries. There were plenty of good choices for all four courses. Yum."

  • "The service was poor. I felt we were ignored. I asked two different servers for a straw three times before it was finally brought. The Shepard salad was missing lemon and olive oil. The pieces of vegetables were supposed to be chopped into small pieces, they were not. The soup was tasty but my Turkish husband has never heard of such a soup. The lamb was good but the bulgar or whatever it was was undercooked. This was supposed to be a very special Turkish dish. It was not. The dessert was supposed to be quince, it was pear. Please look up Binhur for Turkish recipes and maybe do an internship in Turkey to learn about service!"

  • "The Mediterranean menu gave us choices we enjoyed, and Jay's service style shows his student excellence. We like returning to JNA for seasonal menu variety."

  • "Decided to dine here with a Groupon that was purchased. This restaurant is located in the same building as the culinary school. The Meals are prepared by the students. The ambiance was nice. The dining area was sectioned off with decorated dividers so to some this may be a bit low-scale, but this did not bother our party of 4 at all. The noise level was certainly quiet enough that you didn't have to exert effort to be heard. The timeliness of service was excellent. There was endless rolls as the students prepare them earlier in the day. There is a varied selection of cuisine from different parts of the world but mostly of the Italian variety. You get a 4 course pre fixe dinner (Salad, Appetizer, Entree, Dessert). Food was Great!"

  • "Great deal, good food......... But expect little atmosphere . This is a school where students strive to please. Four of us went to dinner. Each of us ordered something different and each of us was extremely pleased. In fact, we commented that all courses(the night we were there) were in cases better than food we had paid double for at named restaurants in the city."

  • "Our daughter bought us a groupon coupon for dinner at JNA. We went a couple of nights ago and were extremely satisfied with all aspects of our experience. The service was impeccable, the food from the Mediterranean menu of the evening was interesting, and finally the food was outstanding. This was our first visit, but it won't be our last. "

  • "We hadn't been to JNA for a couple of years -- we have to remember to make a reservation early in the week! It was the same fine service and delightfully varied cuisine as we've had over the years. Everyone is so nice, the service good, and the food delicious and served promptly. We'll definitely try the next menu!"

  • "They have a menu that changes every 12 weeks. There are several choices for each course. We all tried different items and we enjoyed every one. The service was very good and the food was excellent. The dining room seats about 35-40 and the noise level is very low. "

  • "Overall JNA does a great job considering that this is a school and the students are doing the cooking, serving, etc. We've been there several times and plan to keep going back. There are hits and misses but for the money it's a great night out and BYOB. We just had the Mediterranean menu and it was very good. The service was slower than in the past and the hostess not really observant but I think she was new. However when the place is full one server and one hostess are not enough. They need more people on the floor. "

  • "That pretty much sums it up! There's interesting choices for all four courses (I will now add cinnamon to my carrot salad), the servers were very attentive, and everyone there was very friendly. We plan to return!"

  • "We eat here frequently (menu changes seasonally) so we never miss a new menu. This is a real treasure - low prices; quality food; charming wait staff. All prepared and served by advanced level students who are closely supervised by professional staff. Can't miss dining experience. Weeknights only."

  • "My husband was not sure about eating at the culinary school but how was he surprised. We had great service from the time we entered the door. The fixed prix menu add enough variety of food to please anyone. The server was excellent and knowledgeable about the menu. We will be returning. Their menu changes every eleven weeks. Great outing for us."

  • "This is our second time going to JNA, the service and food is always great. It is a shame that with all the resturants in the city that give average service and average food at high prices, it is a school that produces great food and service. The price is unbeatable."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "The food is wonderful. Absolutely delicious. I cannot believe it was done by students. I had fish with browned butter for entree, it was done in perfection, simple, straightforward, and divine. The price is incredible: $25 for 4-course. The menu is short, but this is not uncommon among small BYOB restaurants. It is BYOB but also has a wine list, which is convenient. The service is not bad. One waiter was more professional than the other. The place is not fancy, but perfect for an ordinary going-out night."

  • "My husband and I recently had dinner at JNA Institute. We received a group from a relative for the holidays. Our server was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the food on the menu. The pace of the courses was good. We did not feel rushed. The food was cooked perfectly and we both really enjoyed our meals. We also were given a tour of the kitchen and were able to speak with the head chef. We have already recommended it to several people. We will definitely visit again."

  • "It was a nice evening and the staff is very friendly. It is a teaching school where the students are the servers/chefs. So you have to be mindful of that. Overall it was a lot of fun. It is neat to see someone learning through the course of the meal. You get treated to a 4 star meal for fraction of the cost. However at times you need to be patient with the students if something goes a little wrong."

  • "everything was good on the four course french menu. The crepes were awesome. So , was the dessert. good service."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "the concept of the students cooking is fun and it is the most reasonable meal ever with even the wine inexpensive-4 courses; they could not be nicer and I would go again-our particular night the soup and bread were amazing and the crepe delicious; sadly both the bread pudding and the pork were overcooked and dry-but the Philly weather was bad and they were probably understaffed--there was ample choice and the tips go to scholarships so go eat enjoy!!"

  • "Food was excellent. We will be back. We all had a very good time."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "We went to experience different foods and we each ordered different meals and tasted each others. The soups were excellent. As for the rest, some things were over seasoned (vegetables) and some were under seasoned (bread, meat in stew). We understood that the food was prepared by students, and it was satisfactory, but there is definitely room for improvement. We are going back when the menu changes to try again."
