Diner Reviews
  • "A great way to enjoy delicious food while helping young chefs develop their craft!"

  • "That pretty much sums it up! There's interesting choices for all four courses (I will now add cinnamon to my carrot salad), the servers were very attentive, and everyone there was very friendly. We plan to return!"

  • "A nice quaint atmosphere where you get to experience a variety of food with great service"

  • "We eat here frequently (menu changes seasonally) so we never miss a new menu. This is a real treasure - low prices; quality food; charming wait staff. All prepared and served by advanced level students who are closely supervised by professional staff. Can't miss dining experience. Weeknights only."

  • "My husband was not sure about eating at the culinary school but how was he surprised. We had great service from the time we entered the door. The fixed prix menu add enough variety of food to please anyone. The server was excellent and knowledgeable about the menu. We will be returning. Their menu changes every eleven weeks. Great outing for us."

  • "This is our second time going to JNA, the service and food is always great. It is a shame that with all the resturants in the city that give average service and average food at high prices, it is a school that produces great food and service. The price is unbeatable."

  • "The food is wonderful. Absolutely delicious. I cannot believe it was done by students. I had fish with browned butter for entree, it was done in perfection, simple, straightforward, and divine. The price is incredible: $25 for 4-course. The menu is short, but this is not uncommon among small BYOB restaurants. It is BYOB but also has a wine list, which is convenient. The service is not bad. One waiter was more professional than the other. The place is not fancy, but perfect for an ordinary going-out night."

  • "My husband and I recently had dinner at JNA Institute. We received a group from a relative for the holidays. Our server was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the food on the menu. The pace of the courses was good. We did not feel rushed. The food was cooked perfectly and we both really enjoyed our meals. We also were given a tour of the kitchen and were able to speak with the head chef. We have already recommended it to several people. We will definitely visit again."

  • "It was a nice evening and the staff is very friendly. It is a teaching school where the students are the servers/chefs. So you have to be mindful of that. Overall it was a lot of fun. It is neat to see someone learning through the course of the meal. You get treated to a 4 star meal for fraction of the cost. However at times you need to be patient with the students if something goes a little wrong."

  • "everything was good on the four course french menu. The crepes were awesome. So , was the dessert. good service."

  • "the concept of the students cooking is fun and it is the most reasonable meal ever with even the wine inexpensive-4 courses; they could not be nicer and I would go again-our particular night the soup and bread were amazing and the crepe delicious; sadly both the bread pudding and the pork were overcooked and dry-but the Philly weather was bad and they were probably understaffed--there was ample choice and the tips go to scholarships so go eat enjoy!!"

  • "We went to experience different foods and we each ordered different meals and tasted each others. The soups were excellent. As for the rest, some things were over seasoned (vegetables) and some were under seasoned (bread, meat in stew). We understood that the food was prepared by students, and it was satisfactory, but there is definitely room for improvement. We are going back when the menu changes to try again."

  • "The food came out timely and was hot (soup) and tasty. The service was friendly and attentive. The prix fixe menu was varied enough to satisfy our group of four. In all we had an enjoyable evening and talked about returning in the future. The only draw back was that most of our group found the chairs uncomfortable. However, this one issue will not stop us from returning."

  • "After seeing a Groupon and the ensuing curiosity, we visited on a Thursday evening. Parking was a breeze and only a few tables were seated when we arrived at 545. Once seated we were informed it was a school, people learning front of house, back of house and everyone was a student. The prix fixe offered a variety of food, 4 options for each course of soup, ap, main and dessert. Leek onion soup was delightful and creamy, french onion was alright; beets with goat cheese were delicious, seafood crepe was very meaty and creamy; brown buttered fish was lacking in a sauce and although not dry, needed something more, chicken was flavorful and juicy; custard was fantastic - bitter and creamy, choc bread pudding was delightful. Would visit again."

  • "We had a good time with friends. The menu had more choices than we expected, and the food was well-prepared. The servers were very attentive and friendly."

  • "There was plenty of food to go around. The ratatouille was out. The waiter told us after he described it and made it sound delicious. This was a slight disappointment. The butter was very salty. Other than that, the food was good. The pork was by far the best entree. It was a great deal for what we got. We would go there again soon if it weren't so far from our home."

  • "I felt that the food at a culinary school would be good. I did not expect the gourmet quality. The servers (there were many people who were attentive to us) were wonderful and JNA has done an incredible job of making you forget that you are eating at a school. Music was pleasant and at an appropriate noise level. It is truly a steal for the normal price per meal. I happened to have a discount which made me it even doubly pleasurable! I will definitely be going there again."

  • "As you enter the resturant/school, you are greeted with a warm smile and are seated almost immediatly! The menu is full of choices that all sound tempting! What ever your choice, it will be WELL worth the time spent reading the menu over and over again! The food will leave your taste buds wondering if you could ever replicate this dish in your own home (which you know you probably couldn't even come close)!!! All the courses are spaced timely so that you do not feel rushed nor waiting-leaving your stomach growling! The staff is fun and professional! The time spent there is worth every minute and every penny!"

  • "Easy to park, Great value, it's a pretty set menu with few choices but it is a school. I/we are fairy health conscious so would like to see more Veggies and less butter. The atmosphere is lacking but then it is not a restaurant it's a school."

  • "Nothing quite like the service, food and ambiance of a restaurant school meal. Every detail was superbly executed. We can't wait to come back with friends next time!"

  • "Can't beat the price for a 4 course meal. Food was very good so was the service. Liked that the space was small but the tables were not close together. Plan to go back when I'm in the area."

  • "Food was great by everyone's opinion, my basa fish was cooked to perfection and tasted outstanding. A nice quiet intimate room with few tables and a very attentive wait staff. Will definitely be back. I like that the menu is season adjusted, it's good to enjoy what is fresh at that time of year."

  • "We were with a group of four and no one had ever experienced a dinner at a culinary institute. We were presently surprised. This was the third night of a cycle, and there were some problems with slow service, but to us that was to be expected. After all this was supposed to be a learning experience for the students. The food was much better than expected. Everyone agreed they would return."

  • "This is an institution that trains students to work in the hospitality industry. Students are very sincere and working hard to perform. We appreciated that. The restaurant is quite small. They are booked and not easy to find a table on the date you want. So make reservation way ahead! Parking is off street. We had no problem of finding a spot to park. The little metal chair is a bit hard and cold on my back. Some wooden dining chairs would be nice!"

  • "Took another couple who eat out frequently= we all loved it! Menu, prep, presentation, server - all great. We loved that the tables were generously spaced and it was wonderfully quiet so all could converse easily. We never felt rushed nor ignored. We booked a reservation before leaving - an excellent dining experience!"

  • "We were very disappointed in the food both for the taste and presentation. The two best items were the bread and the dessert. We felt that the food was similar to what you would get at a large banquet hall. The quality of the ingredients and the food preparation were both mediocre."

  • "This place is a school where students prepare the meal. It was absolutely horrible. My wife and I did not eat our food. It was gross. From the appetizers to the main course it was unedible. The dessert, zeppoles and ice cream, was the only thing we ate. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. ...."

  • "Note that this IS an institute--the staff is "in training." If you're the kind of person who appreciates apprenticeship and who has patience with people who are still learning, this is a real treat! The care and attention by all members of the staff (including institute instructors) left us feeling warm and well-treated. They communicated a sincere gratitude for receiving our business. Food was presented well (nothing terribly fancy, but delicious--except for the mashed potatoes!); tiramisu for dessert was particularly good."

  • "This is my second time at JNA. Although I enjoyed the first time more, it was still good. The eggplant rolatini was way overcooked but I wouldn't think of sending it back because these are students and they are all so NICE. Plus, even big time restaurants put out a blunder once in a while. I will still go back. The service is so good."

  • "My sister and I were pleasantly surprised with the quiet ambiance of the restaurant. The presentation and food choices were very good, she had the pork and I had the lamb, both were excellent. The chocolate vesuvius dessert was a delicious end to a lovely dinner experience. We can't wait to come back!"

  • "We had a promo coupon which was responsible for four of us trying JNA. The ambiance was very nice, a smallish dining room with tables spaced comfortably, Although the restaurant was full the noise level was pleasantly low. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The waitress we had was obviously a beginner but was trying hard to do her job and to learn. The Italian theme four-course dinner was nice with some dishes more successful than others. We sampled a good number of the offerings; the winners were the crostini and the cream of carrot soup, the pork loin, and from the desserts, both the chocolate dessert and the biscuit tortoni were outstanding. We will try it again when the menu changes to French in the winter."

  • "The food selection was perfect for most everyone. This was my second visit with different guests And everyone enjoyed their meals and service. The only Problem I see is that the chairs are not comfortable to sit in for Any length of time. Hope that can change."

  • "It was a very pleasant and interesting experience! I would definitely go there again and reccomend it to friends. The food was outstanding and so was the service! The polenta was the only thing I didn't care for... It was too thick and lumpy. My idea of Polenta is the consistency of creamy oatmeal. I would give the ambiance a "B" for effort. It reminded me of a high school gym decorated for a prom. The student and staff's friendliness more than made up for the deficit in ambiance. I definitely plan to return!"
