Diner Reviews
  • "I couldn't get a table at Cafe del Rey near home so decided to head into Santa Monica with my wife and two visitors from New York. I wasn't sure where to book, but my wife dined next to a billionaire in JiRaffe recently and I figured her boss would reserve somewhere nice for him to eat. All four of us were impressed with the atmosphere, the food, the wine and the service was first class. We loved the beet salad and the WAGYU carpaccio and this is one of the rare spots on this side of the Atlantic where you can order sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I'm going to stick my neck out and give JiRaffe 10 out of 10."

  • "Raphael Lunetta and his staff never disappoint. First time eating the hanger steak and it was prepared just right and tasted of heaven."

  • "This is a place that has stood the test of time. All of our dishes were very good and we left very happy with use we had. Our waiter was great, but overall service was a little off. Not enough menus and what seem like a little chaos (which could be because the owners kids were helping out that night leading to a nice family restaurant feel about it)"

  • "The food was very good! The jidori chicken and the sweet corn ravioli special were our favorites. The mixed green salad was excellent - not something I would usually review since it's so simple, but it's one of those things that is so easy to ruin. Here it was fresh and light and dressed perfectly. The banana creme pie dessert was amazing too. But even more than the food, the service was top notch. When I first called to revise our reservation time, Bobby was very professional and friendly. He gave us a great table that set a nice atmosphere for the lovely dinner. Our server was also very professional, just the right amount of friendly and available, but not intrusive. Overall, a wonderful evening!"

  • "We had not mean to Jiraffe in awhile and it was so nice to be back. The food was delicious and creative, as always. We had the corn ravioli appetizer that melted in our mouths. My husband had the pork cheek, which was also wonderful. The trout and salmon were cooked perfectly and our daughter had the chicken, which is one of Jiraffe's trademark dishes. The desserts were also fantastic. Our waiter was one of the best we have ever had. This is a fantastic restaurant."

  • "We dined there twice in this past week, and indication that we like the place. Good chef, good kitchen, refined and sophisticated dishes, pleasant old fashioned setting and ambiance. The portions seemed relatively small and prices seemed relatively high but overall the experience was worth it."

  • "I love Jiraffe. If you're a Vegan or Vegetarian, good luck however! I was hard-pressed to find anything (ok, the mixed greens which are delicious). However, in cheating and through past experiences, you won't find better food. Anything with mushrooms is to die for, the gnocchi, salads ... all superb. Petite french portions, great service, outstanding wine and a lovely vibe. Still 5 stars to me even though I'd wish they'd add more veggie options :)"

  • "Small older restaurant just off the noise of Santa Monica shopping area. We felt a bit under dressed (nice shorts and sweater for me, jeans and heels for wife) as other patrons had jackets and dresses, but staff didn't bat an eye. Looks like a place where the locals go. I recommend it."

  • "Dinner was great, except two of the dishes could have been hotter or at least warmer. The onion soup and the Halibut appetizer. My Salmon was very good and so was the trout and John Dory we all happened to have fish!!! Which was prepared perfect. Cocktails are very good too!!!"

  • "The expanded menu is welcome and adds variety and subtlety to long-time favorite appetizers and entrees. Still at the top of their game. An excellent meal."

  • "We were looking for a relaxed place where we could hear one another and would not feel hurried. Unfortunately, the noise level was quite high. The food was very good, but almost from the start I felt we were being hurried along by the wait-staff. Next time I'd go somewhere else."

  • "Very good - not great - but I'm picky. My only real criticism is that the wine list seems to lag the food. But we had a lovely evening and at the end of the day, that is what matters!"

  • "The food was unique and delicious. The lamb was purely exquisite. They also gave a free mushroom soup that wasn't on the menu but was unbelievably delicious."

  • "This was my second visit to JiRaffe. On the first occasion the Chef / Owner spent a lot of time in the restaurant interacting with his customers which i thought was great. This time he had the night off and the food was still outstanding and the service very friendly and attentive and our waiter had the confidence to interact with us in a friendly but humorous way. Next time i am in Santa Monica I will be back to JiRaffe."

  • "This is my place for special occasions, we will drive the 45 mins to have dinner here. I LOVE the mushroom cappuccino, I wish that was part of the soup menu. Its a great teaser for the scrumptious food that will be served. "

  • "This was my first time at JiRaffe. I took my girldfriend for her birthday and we had a great time. The ambience was great and the food was delicious. the cuisine was definitely something new for us. Our server was very friendly and helpful. The only thing I did not like was that i had noted that it was my girlfriend birthday on the special request box, and I also mentioned it to our server, but nothing at all special was done. I usually dont expect a song or anything big at any of the fine dining places i have been to, but at least some sort of assortment with a candle would've been nice. I most certaintly recommend this restaurant, just not for any special occasion."

  • "Every dish is prepared so well and with such creativity that even if it's something you don't normally like, you'll love it here! Case in point: their beet salad appetizer and also the ahi tuna appetizer, not normally high on my list in general, is amazing here!! Other notable dishes: the trout in brown butter sauce is everything, lamb chops and pork chops are meaty and delicious. I world only halt at the beef filets, they are very small (but incredibly tender and flavorful), and served under corn. If your extremely hungry for beef, it's just not enough food, go for the steak for two that's on the menu. Also the owner is a kind and handsome guy who comes to every table with the sous chef to give him a run down of the satisfaction level."

  • "We travel often, and love to eat at locally-owned restaurants wherever we go. We heartily recommend JiRaffe - the food is delicious, with much attention to detail, the service is excellent, and it is a delightful and charming restaurant. All in all, we recommend it without any hesitation. Bon appetit!!"

  • "Have been meaning to check this place out for a while and finally did with some family in town. I wasn't that impressed, actually. The waiter was fairly good and attentive, but didn't tell us the specials. I had the lamb and the pieces were good sized mad pretty tasty, though the sauce was a little heavy. The best part of the meal was dessert. The wines I had were nothing special. The clientele seemed like mostly tourists and elderly regular types, so no particularly fun or "happening" vibe."

  • "We have been going to JiRaffe since they opened many years ago. We mostly go on special occasions, but I did take business people there for dinners a few times. We had not been for about a year. The food and service where very good and outstanding as noted above. The big surprise was that the size of the portions have shrunk and the prices have increased. While we did enjoy our anniversary dinner, unfortunately we will not be returning because the value for the price is not their."

  • "Hadn't been to JiRaffe in years and thought we'd try it again. Food was outstanding. I had the crab cakes and half rack of lamb. Both were fabulous and some of the best I've ever had. My boyfriend had the onion soup and the halibut. Great flavors. We'll definitely go back."

  • "Was 3rd date dinner, so wanted a special place.. An excellent glass of Champagne to start and then the waiter sold the steak salad starter so amazingly well we could not say no.. The Steak was perfect and the salad and dressing was perfect, almost as good as the waiter had sold us! We both had the lamb, from NZ, and it was perfect and matched brilliantly by the Petit Syrah.. The service, atmosphere and ambiance was just what I had wanted.. A great and perfectly sized desert finished off a great meal.. "

  • "6 people of them service team running around all the time, including the Chef, who rather should be in the kitchen. Very noisy and hectic, not relaxing at all. The receptionist was arrogant. Food was good. Would not recommend this place, have overall been there three times, and now the last time."

  • "We'd heard about Jiraffe for years so when we found ourselves in Santa Monica Saturday looking for a place to treat our son (who's at LMU) to an early dinner to help him through final exam prep we gave it a shot. We were greeted so warmly by the maitre'd I wondered if we'd met years before and I should know him by name. After describing our son we were seated upstairs and when he joined us he asked if the maitre'd was a family friend for the same reason. Drinks (cumquat gimlet, blood orange cosmo and chateauneuf du pape) were excellent as was the sweet, savory onion soup. a light and delicious tomato burrata tart, rack of lamb and angus beef, both perfectly done. Our kid went back to study refreshed and grateful and we drove home happy."
