A word from Jean Georges
Jean-Georges opened in 1997 to critical acclaim. The jewel of Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s empire, the restaurant offers the very best in fine dining. Consistently awarded four stars by the New York Times and three Michelin stars, Jean-Georges presents exquisitely crafted dishes blending French, American, and Asian influences. Chef Jean-Georges is a master at maintaining the essence of ingredients while using them inventively to produce the best flavor. Jean-Georges’ chic and intimate dining room was redesigned by Thomas Juul-Hansen, with striking lighting by L’Observatoire. Impeccable service, tableside preparations, and floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of Central Park and Columbus Circle all contribute to an unforgettable dining experience. Jean-Georges offers a three-course prix-fixe menu and two six-course tasting menus: a traditional tasting of the chef’s signature dishes, and a seasonal tasting featuring fresh market ingredients.

Jean Georges is a culinary genius. The lunch menu is an extraordinary bargain at $28, but this time I went for dinner to celebrate my fiancee's birthday. This was the best meal of my life! And that was before the unbelievably divine dessert odyssey. The crunchy rabbit was heavenly and the desserts were mind-blowing. It's not just food, it's an experience. I fervidly recommend this restaurant to any foodie. The only complaint I can muster is that it was difficult to rest a knife on the dish used to serve the rabbit without have it fall in. Otherwise, absolute perfection!

  • We may have gone on an off
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 11/10/2008
We may have gone on an off day, but the food wasn't that spectacular. We tried two different tasting menus, and were not all that impressed. A couple dishes were too salty, and we didn't get the sense of creativity/inventiveness that we would expect from this price range. The wait staff could be characterized as attentive, and a little strange/sarcastically patronizing. Overall, it was a nice place to eat, however, it feels like Jean George has branched out to other locations and has abandoned his attentiveness, creativity, and attention to detail with regard to this restaurant.

My lunch at Jean-Georges exceeded all of my expectations. Every dish was like a party. My particular favorite was the short ribs - absoulutely outstanding. Please enjoy every moment for me. I will run back there from the airport the next time I come to NYC.

Everything was incredible. The service was impeccable, presentation was perfect, and the food was out of this world. My wife and I have dined at both Nougatine and the formal dining room. Both are so different yet so outstanding. I recommend it to everyone!!!!!!

Spectacular food at very reasonable prices at lunchtime. The wine list is very expensive, but one can get around that by ordering from the "by the glass" section. We will be going back . . . and back . . . and back . . . .

  • The hype over this restaurant
    mjtexasVIP
    Dined on 11/3/2008
The hype over this restaurant was just that for me.... hype. The waitress was very professional but her staff were not, they were neither knowledgeable or friendly. Finally, the food was just ok. The mixture of ingredients was not exciting and 2 of my dishes were overly salted. One of them I couldn't eat at all. I won't be going back.

Service was exemplary, although more SF familiar than NY formal. The dining room was small, but not cozy, with a big ceiling and very cool chandelier. The menu was large, and although we did the fixed price, they seamed very accommodating to food preferences / allergies. The after-concert seating of 1045pm was fine, although we were the last to leave slightly after 1 am. The food was very innovative, although there was no WOW moment, very very enjoyable. The bill adds up fast, especially when you do the wine pariring at $120 per person. A special night out, for sure.

  • This is an outstanding restaurant

This is an outstanding restaurant (I am working my way through Gourmet's top 50 and it ranks in the top 10 easily). The food was exquisite. The service was impeccable. We went early when it was suitably quite too (not true of their more informal restaurant next door which is very, very noisy). My only complaint is that I felt the staff pushed a 'glass' of campaign at the outset (I don't like it as I feel they are trying to run up the bill at a place where the bill already adequately reflects the value) and then pushed 7 bottles of sparkling water at an outrageous price (again, given the overall, superior quality of the food and service, this seemed completely unnecessary and annoying). Otherwise 10 out of 10.

Some restaurants just "get it," and seem to hit the perfect notes on every detail. Jean Georges is one of them. Every aspect of your dining experience is carefully attended - from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. Naturally, the service is exceptional and the entire evening is paced according to your liking. Of course, Chef has a delicate touch and every item on the menu is thoughtful and creative. Take someone you would enjoy spending three glorious hours with, and enjoy this glorious dining experience.

Clearly, JG is one of the best, therefore the expectations are high. Other than receiving a martini with 4 olives on a skewer when I ordered a Gibson (and answered a question that probably shouldn't have been asked - onion or a twist), I'd say that our lunch for four lunch was a big success. I asked if the Chef was going to be able to stop by for a quick Hello and was told that he'd try. Didn't happen - oh well, perhaps next time...

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 10/25/2008
I went there twice in two weekends!! The $25 lunch menu is unbeatable for the level of quality and service that you get. The braised beef was undoubtedly the most popular on the menu. But I also really enjoyed the ribbon tuna with avocados drenched in a subtle curry sauce, as I've never seen anything like it before. The fish dishes were very refined - get the skate for something lighter... it comes with the famous Jean George wine sauce. Get the red snapper if you like butterscotch flavors and a slightly heavier fish. I would say only the chocolate dessert was worth getting though and even then, I wish it came with more of it's mouth-watering lava chocolate cake than all the other unmemorable dessert accompaniments. Overall A+!

If you expect to have a high quality service cuisine, this doesn't happen lunch time Too friendly attendance, making you at the bar which is very noisy and not elegant at all. Once in dinning room, pretty and modern furniture, with a closed menu with courses and prices according to a medium restaurant. About DISHES for example, egg with caviar and the salmon is nothing special. Service is very simple.

Sublime, albeit "edgy" food. Not the place to go if you're into traditional haute cuisine. Tastes can be challenging and unexpected. Ditto for the wine (e.g., one wine pairing with the tasting menu involved de-bubbling rose champagne). Still, it can be great fun and is not to be missed. The formal dining room is elegant and romantic. The (distinctly separate) bar area is a bit "happening", can be a tad crowded and a bit more noisy. Still, the food and supurb service at both are outstanding.
