Josh Ernst is the heart and soul of the Jax bar. The cocktails and small batch, house made sodas at Jax are the height of good taste and purposeful preparation.
Beginning January 2013, Jax is bigger, better, fresher and luncher. We’ve doubled the size of the world famous Oyster Bar and brought the kitchen into the dining room with made to order chowder, stews and steamers, prepared before your very eyes.

  • "Jax Fish House is far from fine dining, and is really nothing more than a bar with overpriced bar food. I was very disappointed with the prices in contrast to the portion size--the muscles were about the size of a fingernail. The oysters were exceptional, but at $3.50 each, much overpriced. As for the interior, the long bar is the focal point with tables packed in against the walls as an afterthought. The bar was so packed at 5PM that people standing at the bar were pressing up against the tables. In short, the incredibly noisy environment coupled with people's posterior ends pressed up against you is very unappealing. Even when dining on overpriced bar food, I expect to do so at my own table without my personal space being invaded."

But that's not been our experience in the past. One thing that is consistent: Jax is very loud. Would go more often if not for the loud 80's music."

  • "I brought my uncle here while he was in town for a couple days. He is from Maine and was skeptical of a gosh place in Colorado. He was blown away! He got the steelhead trout dish and told me I should bring him here everytime he's in town. I got a non fish dish in order to keep prices low for the evening, but I wish I'd gotten a fish, even though my pasta was pretty alright (not amazing though). Great dining experience, great waiting staff and awesome wine! If you get there before six, you'll get some nice happy hour options."

  • "Took my wife and friends there for her birthday. She had never had oysters before, the waiter did a wonderful job suggesting a variety for us to try. We enjoyed them very much. Also, they have incredible bread with honey butter. The meals were well presented and cooked nicely. The only critique I have is I felt the entrees were a bit overpriced. It is downtown Denver though, so higher prices can be expected. I would still highly recommend! Seems like a wonderful night spot and a great place for dinner."

  • "The food was very very good. We had the Poke appetizer and the Buttermilk bread. I had the grilled Mahi Mahi and my wife had the fish and chips. Both meals were excellent! We also had the key lime pie for dessert. Very good key lime pie. The restaurant was VERY VERY loud! The music was turned up so loud that it was difficult to converse with my wife. This is really my only complaint."

  • "I made a reservation for 2 at 5:45 because we had a comedy show to go to and the doors opened at 7pm. We got there and were not sat until 6:10 because of happy hour, which needless to say I was not so happy about. The manager Kelly came over and apologized and bought us a round of drinks. The waiter also gave us the Happy Hour pice for some of our food. I really appreciated how much they wanted to make my experience great. "

  • "Jax is one of our favorite happy hours which usually turns into dinner with friends...but they like to turn and burn tables...I've had menus taken...like the wine and drink list that the table is set with, had 3 wait staff ask in a matter of one minute if we were done, the table completely cleared while we are eating including 1/2 empty drinks or food we are still working on...I find this practice rude. "

  • "No need to go to Landry's (er... M&S) across the street. Hit up this younger, hipper spot for superb seafood. Crowded without being cramped, loud without making you shout, you feel like you're in a popular place. The menu is not vast, but big enough to have a few good choices. Everything we tried was excellent: Staples like crab cakes, chowder, and the exceptional house "emersum" oysters were all executed to perfection. We also had the "salmon belly" special which was a salty piece of fish heaven with an excellent remoulade and delicious early season tomatoes. Sides and desserts were good - the "german chocolate" cake had great coconut icecream and candied pecans, though the cake was a bit too light. Wine list was short but well considered."

  • " What can we say? A great selection of fresh fish and oysters, served by friendly, knowledgeable servers. The setting is both comfortable and funky. Try to get there during the daily happy hours, between 4 and 6, where select oysters go for $1.50 each. Sit at the marble counter and watch the shucking first hand. The menu is excellent, but watch for the daily specials, which can be awesome, e.g.fresh lobster ravioli with buerre blanc sauce. If you are a key lime pie lover, don't miss the house made product. Reserve ahead."

  • "My husband and I have always loved Jax. As long as we plan far enough ahead to get a reservation. This last visit we had fantastic food, as always, though it seemed extra loud and I felt like we had to shout to actually hear each other. While we both love lively and energetic atmospheres while we are out without the kids, this past time was a little over the top. We will definitely go back, though we may ask to be seated further in the back next time."

  • "We had to be in Denver overnight between Skiing Breck & flying home. I am a foodie and needed quality food and atmosphere while being able to feed my 2 active boys. I found it! We popped in, they sat us in a small booth alongside the wall, behind the bar ... so great view to people watch and view the evening action unfold. We had prompt service, our waiter, Eric, was attentive to us and our boys. We chose a variety of oysters -so fresh! We got the burger for the boys, which I had to take a couple bites of and then I ate the Mahi and my hubby got a Lobster dish ... both YUM!! The decor in Jax is very modern, Tadich-Grill cool but more bright and hip-lively. I have already referred local Denver friends to it. Kristin"

  • "We went there on opening day, forgetting that it was when we made our reservations. Though the restaurant was very crowded we were blown away by the experience! We had oysters to start, which were delicious! Let your server recommend the best to you; they know what they are talking about! I had the Seared Ahi which was melt in my mouth amazing! My boyfriend had the Trout, which he enjoyed very much! I can't believe it took us so long to get here, but now that we've been once, we'll certainly be back soon!"

  • "The service was good, but I was not a fan of the food - it was too.....funky. For a restaurant with the name "Fish" in it, I would have expected a large list of fish to choose from. Instead, you had to pick from oysters, calimari, clams, and other things that not everyone loves. Also, the noise level was extremely loud, and barely any room for the waiters to even take your order at the tables. Definitely will not be back."
