  • "Like many high end restaurants Jax is serving big plates w. small portions. The Shrimp & Steamed PEI mussels appetizers were disappointing, gumbo & oysters were excellent. My 4 oz. meager portion of salmon looked great but had few veggies & lacked the typically delicious burst of flavor. My wife's Ahi was wonderful. Dessert: Key Lime Pie + a Snicker's Cake, both delicious. For 3 people we had 4 appetizers, 3 entrees, 2 desserts + drinks. Had we not ordered as many appetizers as we did, we probably would have left hungry. Jax should revisit their portion sizes. The service was slow. Usually every dish is consistently superb. The wait staff didn’t look familiar. We wondering if, because we went on a Monday evening, did we get the "B" team?"

  • "I had the blackened catfish on sweet polenta, and my wife had a crab cake. Both were superb. I didn't try the raw oysters because they are just a bit too spendy for us, starting at around $3.50 each and working upwards. However, we did get the snickers cake dessert, which was quite tasty. My wife said she would go back for the dessert alone. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Upon informing them that it was my wife's birthday, they provided her with a birthday card that included a discount for her next meal there, and they took the dessert off our bill. It's small and noisy, and I strongly recommend reservations, but I give them a strong 4/5 stars for anyone who lines great food and excellent service, however cramped and noisy."

  • "Despite being a half hour early for our reservation, we were seated promptly by a friendly hostess. Parking and a sudden downpour made getting there a challenge but it proved worthwhile! Our waitress recommended a great white wine and everyone enjoyed their entree. The calamari appetizer was outstanding as we're the crab legs and lobster roll. We split 3 desserts and agreed the portion of gelato was skimpy but the key lime pie and snickers "cake" more than made up for it. Loved Jax!"

  • "This is simply a great seafood restaurant, prices are on the high side, but we are in the mountains. The oysters were fresh and not slimy as they are in some places. There are some very good wines on the list and the choice of seafood is very nice. This would be a good seafood restaurant on the coasts, but it is here in Boulder. The one here is smaller than the one in denver, but just as good. If you like seafood, you must try Jax."

  • "We visited Jax on a whim, being tourists to Denver and knowing nothing about the restaurant. Our server was very warm and friendly and clearly was well versed on the menu and the ingredients. High points were the calamari appetizer, especially due to the unique sauces served as opposed to the typical marinara. I ordered the swordfish, which was cooked perfectly and the fingerling potatoes and creamed spinach were nice accompaniments. My sister ordered the salmon, which was beautifully presented in a tomato broth. While she liked the salmon, she isn't a tomato fan, so that probably wasn't the best choice for her. The star was the halibut, with citrus foam - a gorgeous dish and quite delicious. The portions aren't huge, but satisfying."

The only drawback was that we were placed right at the kitchen door, which was a bit distracting.   • "Waited over 10mins to be even greeted by our server, not a good sign. Ordered the crab cake the start off with which was disappointingly portioned given the high price. For dinner, my wife had the lobster roll which consisted of a small amount of lobster surrounded by bread and chips. Cheap carbs and carbs. I had the blackened catfish with a spicy char served on top of house made sweet cornbread. The catfish was overshadowed by the monstrous slice of cornbread, so more cheap carbs here. For the taste and atmosphere, there are many other superior establishments in Boulder if you're looking for upscale, gourmet offerings. First and only time eating here; we will definitely not be back!"

The space is small but they squeeze in what they can so the atosphere is full of energy. The bad Environment - not real cozy or private if you are looking for a place to take a date. Happy hour - looks great but make sure you are early. It fills up! It's a good sign of a good happy hour though. I hope to catch it early next time. "

  • "We had a great dinner at Jax. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and full of great suggestions. One of the hosts/managers came over and shared his extensive knowledge on oysters, which was fun for the four college kids with us to learn about. Two guests had the lobster roll and one kept sighing happily as he ate noting,"This is the best meal I have ever had in my life." They ran out of two entrees we ordered, but there were so many other delicious choices, no one cared! Jax goes to the top of our list---we will return! "

  • "Jax was okay...service was spotty and food left a lot to be desired. Two people at our table ordered the lobster roll and there were only 3 small pieces of lobster in the sandwich, it was pretty much all lettuce and bread. I ordered the crab legs, which were good. The other person was a vegeterian and had planned to order two vegetable side dishes, but our waiter offered to alter one of the fish dishes and remove the fish and add more veggies - which sounded like a great idea until we got the bill and they charged the same amount just without the fish...just didnt seem like the "right" thing to do on the restaurants part. The location is cool and restaurant has a great feel, but I left very underwhelmed."

  • "The menue and service are great and very geared to fresh seafood. If you want a great selection of fish Jax is where to go but be sure to have a reservation, even for happy hour. Their house infused vodkas are great and IF you can snag one if two tables on the patio for happy hour be sure to try an infused vodka with lemonade and done oysters. ( hint- if you really want oysters but don't want to pay as much hit up Boulder Cafe at happy hour, they have their oysters delivered by the same company and are half the price and if you want Caviar try the Kitchen Upstairs for similar reasons) I would not recommend it for groups with small children because it is a small and tight resturant with limited space for high chairs ect. "

  • "We had a really good dinner. But, there is always a but. The portions were smallish. Our server told us our special was accompanied by a radish salad. The radish salad turned out to be maybe a radish with small bits of greens. The fish was excellent and fresh. However, we all thought the food, though good, was very expensive. Will we go back? Probably not."

  • "Enjoyed a great meal w/excellent service on a very busy Sat nite. We arrived earlier than our reservation, but the friendly hostess was able to figure out how to seat us immediately. Atmosphere was lively,w/soft lighting,&exposed brick walls. Although we didn't try the oysters,I was impressed with the selection.Worth having is the calamari appetizer.Pieces were tender&had great flavor.Unfortunately the kitchen forgot to make a side dish, but again the restaurant excelled in service-both our savvy waiter&his partner were very apologetic, informing me immediately that the dish would be comp'd. Cauliflower arrived shortly&was worth waiting for.I would definitely recommend Jax.They sincerely care about the atmosphere, food&service they provide."
