  • "Excellent food, quite noisy. Difficult to talk to person next to you."

  • "Jar is where we go to celebrate all our family birthdays and other special occasions. We love the standards, but we occasionally try the evenings specials and it's always delicious! Always have to have the mussels though and must end with the butterscotch pudding."

  • "Friends who visit LA raved about Jar, but I found the food to be mediocre. It was good, but there was nothing about the experience that was outstanding."

  • "Seems that the chef is out and about chatting with her regulars most of the time. I have experienced that the past two times. I think it's fine for a chef to come out and make the rounds briefly. But, she comes out and only chats with the people she already knows and stays out for what seems like most of the evening. Also, they have an overly strict corkage policy. Even if you buy an expensive bottle off their list, they will not waive the corkage fee for a bottle you bring in. That is not the typical policy these days. And, they don't seem to have a sommelier. So, given that it seems like a place for regulars, was quite loud, and had an annoying corkage policy, I won't be returning. The food was good but hardly great."

  • "What a terrific place: everything I like about going out to dinner in Los Angeles is present at Jar. The folks there are as friendly as could be. The wait staff, especially the young woman who took care of us on Saturday, exemplifies what the combination of professionalism and personal contact can be. My friend had been dining at Jar for years, so he guided us on the menu. I found a superb Bandol Rouge, at a price that made the wine even more delicious. Halfway through our meal the lighting in the restaurant was so dim, people near our table were using flashlights in order to read the menu. Is this always the case? Will be going back, to check out the Weekend Brunch, often and happily!"

  • "Food is sooooooo yummy. But, at this price point, I would expect either an amuse bouche or a "check treat" -- just something small to show an extra touch."

  • "I have been to Jar at least 25 times and Saturday 3-30 is the first time I have left disappointed. We had a 8pm reservation and did not get sat down until 9pm despite asking several times about our table. To add to the disappointment, I had invited a prominent couple that I was hoping to do business with to dinner and every minute that went by I got more and more embarrassed. At 8:45 and on complaint #3, the restaurant did bring some deviled eggs to the bar for us and promised to have some of our dinner comped. This did not happen. We had brought our own wine and we were still charged corkage fees. I have loved Jar over the years, but will be rethinking dinning there. What was supposed to be a fun night was soured by the wait."

  • "You can't go wrong by going to Jar. Always good and low key. Notably, the wine list has a terrific array of wines at several price points, but all are excellent selections. As well, some of the popular menu items are things you love but nobody else sells.....go ahead, choose them!"

  • "This was our first time at JAR, and it won't be our last! Service,Food, ambience was beyond great! JAR is not a big restaurant, it's very intimate.."

  • "I went here to celebrate a birthday. The service was impeccable as fine dining should be. The decor was mid century modern yet with a comfortable vibe. My dirty martini was one of the best I have had in the city. It had blue cheese stuffed olives (which I normally don't like) but they complimented the drink perfectly. Like most steak houses the sides were extra but the portions were large and delicious so It didn't bother me as much as it usually does. My steak was well cooked and well seasoned that I didn't even need the dipping sauce but the Bearnaise that came with it was heavenly so I could't resist dipping. The crowd was a bit old school but that is exactly what I am looking for in a steak house. I will definitely be going back."

  • "first, the good. service was unimpeachable. can't complain. now the bad: 1) while the chicken for the coq a vin was good, the sauce was regrettable. i am used to a thicker sauce--much like a gravy. of course, everyone has a different interpretation, and i'm not going to say any one interpretation is the "right one". however, i do know what i like and i prefer the interpretations with thick sauces. the sauce here had a watery consistency, which also lacked in flavor. the bacon in the dish, instead of being the crispy fried or baked kind, was braised--so it came off like boiled ham. they should have said the dish contained applewood smoked pork belly (it's still bacon technically, i know) 2) if only the cream on the choclate cake was sweet"

  • "The chef was out on the floor & actually greeted us which was kind of fun. We were seated immediately & had wait staff at our table right away. Our waiter was great. There was some misinformation around the quantity on our appetizer orders but when we brought this to the waitstaff's attention it was remedied immediately. We ordered a round of manhattans - first of 3 - they were great and the staff had them at the table quickly on each round. We split the Porterhouse for 2 and this is where I was very disappointed. We ordered it medium rare but it was basically seared & I would classify the cook temperature as rare. On top of that it had an excess of gristle & fat - it was hard to cut - NOT what i would expect for a 120 dollar steak"

  • "Jar was crowded but a party atmosphere--in a good way, not a messy/noisy party feel but a fun, warm, and friendly one. Brought first time Los Angeles visitors and they raved about their evening at Jar. Start to finish, really was the perfect meal and service was, as always, really pretty incredible. We've had a lot of meals at Jar and have honestly enjoyed every bite."

  • "I've eaten at Jar several times over the years -- rustic farm-to-table, then somehow Asian fusion -- my least favorite, then back to rustic home cooking you could never, ever achieve at home. I love the place, pot roast you eat with a fork, a little horseradish on the side. They listed an olive oil cake that Chef found too dry and had it remade! Actually it was some Mandarin/pistachio olive oil cake with a pistachio semi-freddo. I carried it home, it travelled well and I ate it, licking the spoon."

  • "Open Table lists Jar's hours until 11PM. We made a 10:00 but didn't arrive until 10:15 due to street closures. We were told that the kitchen had already closed, and that they had called us - which they hadn't. Disappointing!"

  • "Service was great, the bar had a good range including several good microbrew and interesting international ales (Saison Dupont, for instance). The appetizers and main dishes were interesting and very good with the exception of my lamb shank - it was large, and very tasty, but had a very large amount of fat that had to be trimmed out for me to be able to eat it. I know it's possible to cook one of those so it's not fatty. Desserts were good, but, not as wonderful as the food. I would have expected a chocolate cake or maybe a bread pudding in a restaurant like this one. I'd go back, just wouldn't get the Lamb Shank again."

  • "The dry aged rib eye special and the pot roast were stellar but it was difficult to hear each other across the table. the server was fair but the support wait staff were on top of their game."

  • "Want to thank everyone at JAR for a incredible experience!! The four of us arrived a little late (30 mins) but got seated anyway even tho' the were busy! Ordered a couple of appetizers...deviled eggs and beet salad ( VERY YUMMY ). Two ordered the pot roast ( had to ) , another order the lemongrass chicken ( ANOTHER YUMMY ) and another the duck that was on special. Each of us order some sides...creamed corn, the fries, ( BOTH SOOOOO GOOD ), mashed potatoes, yams, and the special peas. Then we had desert but only ordered two, that we shared. Gotta say that the service was excellent and the food was delish. THANKS AGAIN"

  • "I can think of no better place in Los Angeles for a special occasion. Last Friday, I proposed to my partner at dinner. The staff at the restaurant was so amazing. They had a special dessert brought out with "Will you marry me?" written in chocolate. Everyone could not have been more generous with their time. Even before the proposal, the evening was perfect. We had the best oysters in the world followed by abalone then the best pot roast I've ever had. Our server Tomak was a total angel and made our night even more special. Thank you Jar for the best night of my life."

  • "While visiting my niece who lives in Los Angeles, I wanted to experience fine dining in a five-star restaurant. Jar fulfilled that experience for me on every level. Living in Iowa, fine dining is rare, so I try to take every opportunity I can when on vacation. I ordered steamed mussels which where amazing, the mashed potatoes and coq au vin were to die for, and the specialty dessert was olive oil cake with candied oranges and pistachio semi-freddo was unbelievable. Overall Jar was the best dining experience I have ever had."

  • "Went with a group of four. We ordered apps, main courses, sides, desserts-you name it. Everything was delicious. Tried the famous pot roast-it was great but since we shared I must say the bone in filet was my favorite. They also had a scallop special that evening which was wonderful. Would absolutely recommend but bring your appetite!"

  • "A very good friend of mine has always recommended Jar to me. I decided to take her up and made reservations on a Friday night. The atmosphere was great, and the food was delicious. Only draw was we got there around 7:15 and were seated fast, but didn't actually start eating our main course till 8:45. But i will say this, the steak was well worth the wait. I had 3-Generals and every one was amazing. Will definately go back a second time."

  • "My wife and I have been coming here for years and never disappoints. It's very rare (especially in LA) that a restaurant can even stay open for more than a few years let alone continue to deliver the quality that Jar does. I think they know what they do well and have never tried to deviate or reinvent themselves. Don't ever change... you nailed it."

  • "We dine strictly paleo, so it nice to go out somewhere that had food and a kitchen staff able to accomadate us. The service was a little off that night, the server had to deal with a crisis at another table. She did not go over that evening's specials either, but on the whole managed our experience fairly well."

  • "With the possible exception of spotty service, the evening at Jar delighted. For a night to remember share the pot roast and the coq au vin. Then inhale, eat as slowly as you can force yourself and savor the nearly smoky scents of the chicken, the tender, intensely flavorful beef and dip that bread into the juice. You can stop right there. But there's more. The Brussels sprout concoction is crunchy, savory and lovely. Any of the starters will round out the meal. We had no room for dessert, but I'm sure it's great. Oh and the martinis were spicy and fun."

  • "My husband and I went to Jar for our anniversary. We had cocktails, which were very good, and all of our food - from the pot roast to the sides - were made well and tasted good. If money is not a consideration, this is a great place to get a traditional steak or similarly meat-based meal. However, if money is a consideration, I don't think this is the best place to spend it. We're happy to spend on a special occasion (obviously), but in this instance, it didn't feel like the value was equal to the expense. Everything was good, but nothing was innovative or particularly memorable. And the service, while professional, was perfunctory, becoming more so after we skipped appetizers."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "It's pricey, but the beef is good. Very nice wait staff, no attitude and let me tell you, their butterscotch pudding, will change yo life. Everything was good, but that pudding knocked my socks off, AND it's a big portion, great for splitting. I'm serious, I can't stop thinking about that pudding...."

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his 40th birthday. We are from out of town and this restasurant came highly recommended. We asre both foodies and hard to please, but everything here was amazing an impeccable. We will definitely visit again when we are in town."

  • "This visit the vibe was much different. Very loud, crowded, later diners waiting for tables. As the dinner progressed, the noise level became excruciating. Our server, Melissa, was excellent but there were blips that were not an issue last time. One, two of our steaks were woefully undercooked. Rare, not medium as requested. Two, please Jar, if something is smoked, put that information on the menu! I would not have ordered the salad w blue cheese if I'd known it was smoked. Loathe smoked cheese. Third, one in our party ordered one of the day's "specials" a filet on the bone. 67$. It is awkward for guests to ask the price. So ... Give the price of the specials. Repeat. Give the price of the specials. Not nice."
