  • "Service was terrible. Took 25min to receive bar drink and then I was asked if I wanted to straight up or on the rocks ! Either over worked (appeared to be alone)or the wrong person for the job. Asked for some bread to accompany lunch. My companion is diabetic and couldn't eat the the sweet bread. " we don't serve bread til dinner ". I insisted that if bread was available at dinner then certainly they could toast a slice for her. The bread did not show up. I asked one of gentlemen helping her and it was out immediately."

They have a small, well thought out menu of delicious American comfort food -- love the pot roast and baked salmon -- served in a room that looks like it's straight out of MadMen. Really great cocktails & desserts, too. The highlight of this visit was our waiter -- I relied on him to make several choices for me. He was friendly, attentive, very decisive in his advice and didn't steer us wrong."

  • "The best Manhattan in town! The Kansas City steak (bone in) is always cooked and seasoned to perfection, if you enjoy it med-rare. The motif in the dining room is minimal with a hint of retro. Nice ambient lighting in warm tones create a relaxed yet spirited vibe. Our server Nicole provided exceptional service. (pretty , great smile knew the menu) My love-story and me shared a few dishes that she recommended, when the food arrived she severed our dishes so gracefully that we commented on how she would glide from table to table so effortlessly…serving, pouring wine and taking drinks to and from…We didn't realize she was at the table. ( the Serving Whisperer) We will return most definitely, one of our favorite restaurants. Yummy!"

  • "Though I have heard others claim the quality has slid over the years I can find no evidence of that and had a wonderful meal there on Friday. The dry aged bone in filet specila was excellent as was their coterie of sides. I will continue to recommend this place."

  • "NO wonder Jar is on Jonathan Gold's list of best 101 LA restaurants. The salads (white peach/manchego) and calamari were very fresh with beautifully balanced flavors. The Asian-inspired pork chop was the best pork chop I've ever had. My husband loved his steak and chocolate decadence dessert. The butterscotch pudding lived up to its high recommendation. Our server Nicole was very knowledgeable about the food and made great suggestions. The entire experience was outstanding."

  • "The staff need to be more observant, care a little more about what they're doing and communicate more effectively. We were not offered bread and when we asked for some, it still did not arrive. Menus and wine list sat on our table through the first course. When the server asked if I'd like ground pepper on my salad, he gave the peppermill one turn and went on to the next person at the table. My credit card fell out of the sleeve when the server was taking it to ring up my check. The host found it, brought it to my table, telling me it was on the floor by the bar. My server waked up, grabbed it and said she'd been looking for it. Little details like this cause the diner to wonder if the staff know what they're doing."

  • "The food at jar is amazing! The fish, pork and beef entrees are all delicious and there is a wide variety of appetizers and side dishes to choose from. You can't go wrong with any of them but the purple yam, brussel sprouts and French fries are particularly good. You can't leave with out trying the butterscotch pudding as an end to the meal. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a delicious and interesting meal."

  • "Food is the star for me. It's a tad too dark although I didn't mind but my Australian guest had a hard time reading the menu. If the lighting were to remain the same I suggest a menu with more contrast so that the words jump out rather than blend in with the color of the paper. It feels stuffy (although it was not) because of the lack of windows. Service and food are superb. Valet service a little snooty for my liking. Would definitely come back to try something else. And Chef Tracht came to our table and my 8year old was giddy a chef came to our table. "

  • "My husband and I originally had dinner here about 3 years ago, and the meal was so wonderful that it stuck with us all these years. We finally had an opportunity to go back with some friends this Memorial weekend, but we all left a bit unsatisfied. The appetizers (oysters and crab deviled egg) and sides (sauteed pea shoots and garlic fries) were tasty, as was the dessert of butterscotch pudding. However, we were all underwhelmed by the entrees, and the signature flourless chocolate cake was dry and tasted somewhat tinny (too much cocoa powder, perhaps?). We're hoping that it was just an off night, and not a decline in the quality, as I still can't get the memory of the braised lamb shank from 3 years ago out of my head!"

  • "Jar was my favorite restaurant for years. But subtle changes over the past year bother me, the most notable was a ballsy bait and switch - sauteed chanterelle mushrooms were a special, but when we ordered them, we received shiitakes and the waiter's insistence that they were chanterelles. Bad. And unethical. This last trip, everything was a miss. The duck fried rice used undercooked rice and there were more shiitakes (hmmm...) than duck. The "cowboy ribeye" was $72 and even medium rare, was the dryest and most tasteless steak I ever ate. The wine list is getting shorter and shorter, with odd selections and crazy mark-ups - the sommelier long gone. Bread is now brought on request. One might conclude the restaurant is in wind-down mode. "

  • "First,the ambiance of this restaurant in the evening is lovely. During the day, not so much as it is really all about the lighting that makes the ambiance here. The brunch was boring. No energy in the restaurant, few patrons and most old. Valet parking is $6 and street parking if available is a two hour max for $1/hour. Brunch menu also boring. Ms. Tracht is known for her pot roast, I ordered the pot roast hash. Very disappointing. It consisted of scrambled eggs, a few potato chunks, lots of pepper slices, some pot roast and roasted garlic. Mainly, it just LACKED flavor. I was hoping for FLAVOR and found NONE. We paid $6 for bottled water and got filtered tap in a jar that they wash and refill regularly, TACKY. Can't recommend."

  • "The food at JAR is fantastic. If you want a great steak this is the place to go. This visit the service started out lackluster, we waited longer than I would like to for first contact. After that our waitress was better. My main issue is the loudness. I don't mind an energetic place, but it really gets too loud for conversation across the table."

  • "I happen to love Jar. Brunch is usually a delight. The pot roast hash is delicious and unusual. I would be remiss if I did not comment that I was annoyed that my bloody mary was $14 - a dollar more than my brunch item. TO make matters worse, I ordered a bagel on the side - ok it was $4, but what was a travesty was that it was a generic tasteless supermarket (e.g., Sara Lee perhaps?) bagel. One would expect Ms. Tract who serves only the finest to serve a reasonable bagel or pull it for the menu. It was a crime against foodies."

  • "I saw the mixed reviews, but decided to give it a shot anyway. For fine-dining, the service was abysmal. I waited 30 minutes for my glass of wine (ordered upon sitting), then had to eventually stand and wait for my waitress to finish her spiel to another table where the maitre d' eventually spotted me and asked if there was a problem. She took care of it immediately (still 35 minutes after I had ordered it). We didn't see (our perfectly lovely) waitress until halfway through our entrees. The meats were good and the sides where below average. Really can't recommend this place at all. Oh, and, despite a reservation, we waited 20 minutes for our table. You can't charge fine dining prices and then not run a respectable dining room. "

  • "Seems that the chef is out and about chatting with her regulars most of the time. I have experienced that the past two times. I think it's fine for a chef to come out and make the rounds briefly. But, she comes out and only chats with the people she already knows and stays out for what seems like most of the evening. Also, they have an overly strict corkage policy. Even if you buy an expensive bottle off their list, they will not waive the corkage fee for a bottle you bring in. That is not the typical policy these days. And, they don't seem to have a sommelier. So, given that it seems like a place for regulars, was quite loud, and had an annoying corkage policy, I won't be returning. The food was good but hardly great."

  • "What a terrific place: everything I like about going out to dinner in Los Angeles is present at Jar. The folks there are as friendly as could be. The wait staff, especially the young woman who took care of us on Saturday, exemplifies what the combination of professionalism and personal contact can be. My friend had been dining at Jar for years, so he guided us on the menu. I found a superb Bandol Rouge, at a price that made the wine even more delicious. Halfway through our meal the lighting in the restaurant was so dim, people near our table were using flashlights in order to read the menu. Is this always the case? Will be going back, to check out the Weekend Brunch, often and happily!"
