Diner Reviews
  • "This was the 2nd time we experienced Japonessa. First time was seated at teh bar because the restaurant was full. This time we made reservations for 530pm and glad we did! Still had happy hour drinks and sushi funtil 630p which was amazing! The rolls are large, very beautiful presentation and fresh, crisp tastes! Sashimi plate was nice and pieces generous. I didn't care for the Sundress manhattan on the special cocktail menu but maybe just didn't suit my taste buds. Sake options are plenty so next time I will stick to sake. Service was very quick and server very knowledgable about the menu options. This is becoming one of our favorite places for sushi in Seattle!"

  • "highly recommend this small downtown restaurant. busy but the friendly servers are on top of it, prompt & courteous. food is fresh, fresh, fresh. nice presentations. noise level a bit high as the place is typically jumping. recommend reservations if dining but go early for the great happy hour."

  • "OKAY... SEATTLE IS ALL ABOUT HAPPY HOUR NO MATTER WHAT TIME IT IS!!! That's the exciting part. so, we tried their Happy Hour. Everything was good, well priced, BUT the cuts of fish were very thin -- so mostly rice, but good. spicy tuna wasn't spicy at all, so you have to order extra spicy, and I is just right... they should tell you that. we tried a drink that was like Moscow Mule, but not in a copper cup and with tequila instead of vodka - it was light in flavor, could have used more ginger beer and fresh lime... overall, good sat outside because it was a beautiful evening. loved it, would return."

  • "I come to this place all the time and I'm never let down"

  • "If you are looking for a bowed and ancient itamae presiding at the front of the sushi counter, scowling at his younger apprentices whilst dishing out tuna and salmon rolls, this probably is not the place for you. If you are averse to unconventional marriages, food-wise, and if the thought of snow crab with jalapeño and cilantro just does a number on your head, this probably is not the place for you. But if you are intrigued by hints of Latin flair injected into traditional Japanese fare, and if your palate craves a delicious and imaginative fusion between two unlikely cuisines, then this probably is the place for you. You won't be disappointed."

  • "I was impressed with the food when I first visited this restaurant. I returned after 2 yrs and the food was great. Its very reasonably priced. I will be back sooner than later."

  • "Great people work here, but the menu is laughably complex and it was so loud my ears were ringing when we left. I thought the food was good but I don't see myself going back. I hate to complain about something as silly as decor, but it's cheesy."

  • "We ordered edamane, calamari and 3 rolls. The edamane, calamari and 1 roll came out. Then then we waited, they cleared those empty dishes, waited some more. Then a bus boy came and was going to take away our plates but I said oh no we should have 2 more rolls coming. Then i had to ask or server to confirm we have more rolls coming right? She said oh yes. Then went to check came back and asked us which ones we were missing. Geez do they not keep track? She had wrote it down or order correctly. After about 20mins the rest of the food came out. Clearly they need to work on their system. Not sure if I will return. We had an event to attend and was late. No one needs a 20-25mins break between dishes! Bad service."

  • "We went to Japonessa on 4/2/14 before attending the Lion King at the Paramount Theatre. We made a reservation at 5:00pm and were sat promptly at 5:02pm. One of the bussers came to give us water. Five minutes went by, then 10, then 15 and at 20 minutes we flagged down our server who hadn't even greeted us. When we asked if we could order she said hold on and went to help another table. The tables around us were sat after us and she took their orders before us. After 22 minutes she finally took our drink order and dinner order. She stopped by once during our meal and a second time to drop off the check. We had to ask the manager and bus girl for drink refills and wooden chop sticks because our server, Jessica, was nowhere to be found."

  • "We tried 4 of their Unique Signature rolls. Each one was fantastic. They offer wonderful combinations. Everything was super fresh and presented beautifully. We have eaten sushi all over the country and this restaurant is among our TOP choices. We were not rushed, service was awesome and our meal was priced right. Next time we come in from Austin, we will definitely visit them again."

  • "Second time I've been here and the service at the counter has been horrible both times. Be warned: having a 'reservation' at this place doesn't mean anything. The first time I went with a reservation I was told we were going to have to wait an additional 45 minutes. The second time I went with a reservation for 2, a walk-in cut me off at the front desk and they gave them a table right away. Literally right after, we say we had a reservation and they told us it would be another 20 minutes. Absolutely no apology at all! Honestly, the food is great here but it's tough to enjoy when the service is so poor, ESPECIALLY for the $$$ you will be spending on those rolls."

  • "I have never been disappointed at Japonessa. It has an awesome ambiance. Great for dining with friends, business lunch or first date! Can't beat all day happy hour and creative $6 rolls! You can get a roll, miso soup and side salad for under $10! I send my friends, co-workers and family here any chance I have. Great location on First Ave. You can take the bus tunnel from just about anywhere in the city and walk a couple blocks. Easy access."

  • "This is the second time i've been to Japonessa and this time we had a mix of sushi and sashimi chosen and prepared by the chef. We gave a budget and they brought us a board of such a delicious variety i would most likely not have chosen myself. Everything was amazing andthe fish just melted in your mouth. I would absolutely do the choice of thd chef again. Service was also excellent with very knowledgeable and friendly servers"

  • "The sushi at Japanessa is great, but so were their other foods. We shared a sashimi plate, two rolls, miso soup, udon, and some chicken skewers. All of it was great and the four of us left very full. The total bill before coupon was less than $75. We are definitely coming back for happy hour!"

  • "This is not a "cheap" sushi joint, and the food is worth the price, most of the time. Many things seem well-priced, but sometimes you get the oddball item that's really expensive and you're left wondering how it got the huge price tag. Take their special "salmon sampler" which I thought was one of their big rolls wrapped with four types of salmon for $20. Instead it was "sushi" (I read it wrong), and it was just four pieces (the menu didn't note the lack of quantity included; it came with one each of king, white king, sockeye, & atlantic). $5 for a piece of salmon sushi! The waiter was awesome though and helpfully led me to an option I loved (spicy redhead roll). Lunch has the best deals, except the sashimi, which again is way overpriced."

  • "When we arrived, I informed the hostess that we were here for a reservation. She acknowledged that, however we continued to wait without further acknowledgement. I finally thought to double check. They denied that I had a reservation, so I showed them the reminder emails that I received from their restaurant on my iphone. They all blamed Open Table several times for not sending them the reservation and continued to deny that I had a reservation until I read the email to them, and again showed them the confirmation with date and time. I wonder how they could have my email to send a confirmation but not have it in their system? And to continuously blame Open Table seemed fruitless. Regardless, dinner was good as usual."

  • "Sushi was outstanding, the other items just okay, not bad but nothing compared to the sushi. For service, let me start by the waitress and anyone who waited on me were very polite, friendly and did a good job. What irritated me was the fact that while we were having our drink and debating on if we wanted anything else, our waitress asked if they told me that there was a 10 top they had coming in and asked us basically to pay and leave. In all my years of dining, not anywhere in the country has that happened. I will not be back simply because of that."

  • "Everything is excellent and fresh--recommend the Sashimi sampler and Mexican Ninja roll. Excellent preparation, ambience, and quality of food. Well worth the price. Recommend the happy hour menu around 10pm! Overall delicious--some of the best sushi I've ever had."

  • "My girlfriend had found Japonessa for a place to try on our recent trip to Seattle. While others have said the service can be a bit slow (and it was) the atmosphere and people watching (and food coming out of the open kitchen) made the wait easy. INCREDIBLE flavors of Sushi and Speciality Rolls, with excellent suggestions from our waiter. Even had the kitchen staff come over when I mouthed "What Roll Is That" to tell me what it was and why he liked it. Great location and fantastic for a walk after dinner or a late night spot. Easy Open Table reservations! Greg -- Portland, Oregon"

  • "This is a great place to bring someone who's just starting out with sushi. I had my very first sushi experience here, and I was back again within a week. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the food is amazing. I highly recommend the Super Bad Boy roll, the Sweet Seduction roll, and the Wicked Sensation roll. The Bento box changes daily and works really well as a sampler plate for the newbie or less adventurous diner in your group. The only thing I dislike here is that the tables are too close together. It would be awesome if they had booths, but I understand that with their level of popularity, they need all the tables they can get. Will definitely be back many, many times."

  • "The food was high quality and special accommodations were made for my gluten free requirements, but the sushi rolls were trying way too hard. There was so much emphasis on the sauces drenching them and stuff piled on top that it really wasn't very good. The flavor of the fish was all but destroyed and masked. If I were to go here again, I would stick to the nigiri."

  • "My friends recommended I try Japonessa because it's their favorite. I decided to take my friend here for a date. We both love to eat Japanese food, and I never thought I could find a better place than the sushi place back home. This may have beat it! It is so beautiful inside, very high quality food. I loved the sushi (Seattle/Super Bad Boy rolls). I will definitely be going back here for more."

  • "I took my husband to this restaurant prior to a show the service was wonderful and he LOVED the food and the price was very reasonable. Sashimi was SO tender, yellowtail was superb and I really relished the heat stroke roll, a fabulous combination of delectable flavours in my mouth."

  • "My second time here because I loved it so much I decided to bring 10 of my friends. Katie, our server, was very rude maybe its because we are college students but especially when it came to checking out. Scolded us for wanting to pay separately and when we apologived she just said "yeah". As much as i love your food being treated differently because you're young should not even exist. Shows how fake you are towards your customers just to get tip. Assuming Katie thought we weren't going to give tip, she refused to make us pay separately which is why she gave us a service charge. Third time there, it was just me and a friend. I believe she recognized us for she was still very rude to us. Never smiled or acknowledged us while we were dining."

  • "I have been going to Japonessa for a couple years and their service has been sub-par in comparison to other restaurants around the area. However, this restaurant has really stepped up their game since they took on a new direction in recent months. Their food, service and atmosphere have all exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something different, or for those who are looking for a good sushi place. Also for those that are a little more frugal, come in for happy hour! The food and drinks are steeply discounted. I would recommend the mexican ninja roll, rainbow tartar, spicy redhead and calamari (appetizer)."

  • "Japonessa is a delicious sushi haven. I love their complimentary blends of flavors. Whether you like spicy, sweet, or mouth-melting savory, Japonessa is the place for you! I recommend their spicy tempura shrimp rolls and the tempura brie cheese (that's right!). Book a reservation ahead of time to secure a table for happy hour. $6 for a roll is a great deal!"
