  • Excellent and unique sushi

Sushi with a jalapeño flair. All of the food is beautiful and delicious. It can be very expensive ($20 for a Mr. Wonderful roll), but if you stick to the Happy Hour menu (and it's almost always Happy Hour), you can find a great sampling of rolls, sushi, sashimi, bento and the best miso soup around (only $1). This is where we always bring our out-of-town guests, to show off the heart of Seattle and then the very best sushi. Difficult to get in for lunch. The wait is typically over an hour unless you get lucky and find a spot in the bar. So DO make a reservation!

While we can find good sushi in Omaha, nothing compares to the quality of the food at Japonessa. We've eaten here every time we've visited Seattle since discovering it. Highly recommended. The only negative comment is that the noise level is always very high. We prefer to sit at the sushi bar so that we can carry on a conversation without raising our voices.

  • Great Food, Mediocre Service

The food was good, above average really. This place has got a solid reputation and they deliver. The service was OK, a little slow and not that attentive. Our server must have been moved to another section as he disappeared for a long time, and then apologized for abandoning us. I'll go back, but likely sit in the bar as the Service in the Dining room was underwhelming

I took my husband here for his birthday. We've had good experiences here in the post but this time while the food was good the service was horrible. We barely saw our server. She didn't write down our order. She missed my husband cocktail and my roll never came out. She claims she put the order in and the kitchen missed it but she never came to check to see if it came out. It was extremely frustrating because I want to rave about this place but I can't.

My first time there and my initial thought was; is this a funeral? The hostess' looked as though they were being tortured and were very unfriendly. Not one smile or a bit of conversation..just a head nod to "follow me" and again to sit! The actual server was pleasant and did help take a bit of the distain from my mood. Sushi just ok, nothing speacial. Will definitely not be returning. There are plenty of wonderful sushi restaurants in Seattle...even the hole's in the wall offer better food and service!

If you are a sushi fan and like variety and different kind of sushi, you have to try this place. If you like it spicy, I dare you to try Diabla Say and if you are in a mood for something crunchy and just delicious, you must try Seattle Crunch.

The happy hour was the best happy hour in Seattle hands down. No where else can you find such great sushi at such and affordable price. I'm on a college budget and took my girlfriend there and did not feel like I was getting scammed, like some other sushi restaurants. Prices were very good, my only complaint is where we sat. For two people it seems like they just toss you aside right by the door and the menus were almost as big as the table we sat at not leaving much room for anything else. Overall, it was a great dinner though.

I loved that the have uni on the menu, and for my first time having it, I loved it. But I ordered the spicy bad boy sushi roll with eel, and when I bit into the roll and a bone dug right into the roof of my mouth and got lodged between my gums and my tooth. When my husband told the waiter, he didn't care, he just dropped off the check for us to pay and get out. My mouth is still hurting, and I don't think I will return.

I love Japonesa. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. The sushi rolls are a good size and those on the happy hour menu are priced well. The happy hour menu also has a lot of choices. My office mates and I often go to Japonesa for celebratory lunches or with out of town visitors. I would recommend it (and have!) to anyone who loves sushi!

Recommended by hotel concierge as Asian with a latin twist. Delicious use if cilantro in the appetizers and the sushi rolls. Thw Habenero sushi rolls were appropriately hot from the decorative sprinkles on top to the actual peppers rolled in with the tuna. Fun combo, but be warned to order extra rice!

Went into Seattle after the Mariner's game to the Japonessa. We were 1.5 hours ahead of our scheduled reservation but the hostess arranged a table for us. We were there in time for the happy hour food menu which offered fantastic rolls and sushi at very good prices. Victor our waiter was very attentive. Put Japonessa on your list if you love Japanese food.

Had someone visiting the office from out of town. Food was good and he was impressed with the price for 4 of us. I've been here many times and only had slow service once, more than a year ago. Doesn't open until 11:30, and they don't unlock the door until then. Can often be busy, so usually best to make a reservation.

We sat at the sushi bar. While the food was good, the "chefs" did not put a lot of care in making the sushi. They were concerns about pumping food out ASAP. A lot of thef fish was already pre-cut in containers ready to go and the sliced rolls were cut inconsistently (some thick and some thin, noticeably so).

Of course, one of our favorites for sushi. The unique and extensive list of sushi rolls always pleases our palettes. The service started off a little slower this time, than usual (we sat waiting for service for quite awhile), but recovered quite well once we had a steady waiter. Nonetheless, this was an anomaly from our past experiences, so can be overlooked. The food is worth it! Go...and it is a great deal during their Happy Hour!

The food here was excellent, the service was attentive and prompt, but the kitchen was incredibly slow. It may have been a fluke, as people who came in after us were served quite rapidly, but in our cohort the delivery was a bit crazy slow. Sashimi took an hourish to arrive. Once the food got coming though, everything was really great, so that went a long ways to make up for it. I will be back, and expect to be well impressed. Tres Diablos was great, the Seattle Crunch Roll won over a non-sushi eater, and the happy hour menu looks great.

One of my favorite spots in the West End of Seattle. An innovative and delicious twist on the familiar Japanese fare. Took some friends from out of town and unfortunately we were a table of all women and our lack of service proved the bias..... We finally got our appetizers after the meal arrived..grrrrrr. As a former server and good tipper this is something I am really tired of enduring.

There are many excellent choices for sushi in Seattle. Time & time again, we go back to Japonessa. It is beautiful food that tastes even better than it looks. The Super Bad Boy and the Spicy Redhead are our two favorite rolls. The sake & Japanese whiskies are a lot of fun. Sometimes the service is a little spotty--but the food ALWAYS makes up for that. We have been here probably a dozen times, and have never once been disappointed. Make a reservation, tho--or be prepared to wait!!

The food is great. Rolls are large but might not be worth the price; however, two rolls are enough for two people to share. There is a 9 piece sashimi appetizer for $12 that is great. Service was good but they are so busy that it isn't really attentive. Note: If you might have someone joining your party, let the staff know right away. Japonessa has some of the best sushi in Seattle! If you like spicy, this restaurant offers many creative ways to spice up their rolls with a variety of different sauces and ingredients. Also, I am not a huge fan of tempura rolls, but love the tempura rolls at this restaurant. Some of my favorite rolls include the Barcelona Sunset and King Midas. The drink menu is also outstanding. The service from the server was excellent; very professional and knowledgeable. The only improvement I could see to the experience was the service from the hostess; was not real friendly and service-oriented as I would expect.
