With brand new enhancements, designed by the timeless Jeffrey Beers International, our restaurant features two distinct dining rooms and among the new and exciting additions to our dramatic yet classic 10,000 sq. ft. space are a sushi bar backed by an open kitchen where Chef Morimoto’s signature omakase menus are prepared and Shochu / Sake bar which features Chef Morimoto’s own line of shochu,
sake and craft beers.

  • "The food was fantastic. It combined a lot of flavors that were different enough to be interesting but familiar enough to be comforting. The service, however, was atrocious. Our water glasses sat empty for long stretches, even after we asked to have them refilled. There was an hour gap b/t our sushi course and our entrees due to a kitchen error. The wrong side was brought with our entrees, and when we asked to just cancel the one we had ordered, it was "too late". They did bring us a dessert for our anniversary, even though we had declined dessert. But when the bill came, the dessert was on it (they took it off), we were charged for the more expensive, incorrect side, and there was no attempt to apologize for the long delay in our entrees."

  • "I've been to Japonais several times, but this is the first time I've been since it's association with Morimoto (who I got to meet!). We dined downstairs outside at a table overlooking the river. They have a different menu than the main floor, but the food was great. The carrots/goat cheese/bacon dish was wonderful as well as the brussel sprout dish. The sushi was fresh and very good. We arrived about 5:45 and were seated immediately with reservations, but service was a bit slower than I would prefer; however the service staff was great. Drinks from the bar were very good, but I'd like to see a larger specialty cocktail menu than they had. We'll definitely be going back to try it again."

  • "The food is amazing, the staff does their best to keep up, sometimes lagging when a large group dominates their time. They are VERY knowledgeable about both the food and drink menus. The outdoor areas are nice, the outdoor furniture upstairs is not well thought out (form over function) and can get uncomfortable. All in all I would go again and sit outside. (I prefer uncomfortable to loud, energetic is a misnomer)"

  • " Open Table is to blame here as well! A great food experience should not have to suffer this infernal idea that a place so very loud has to be suffered in order to enjoy some great food. It was impossible to have any conversation what so ever without bending across the table. Open Table contributes to this foolish notion by changing the word loud or nosy to "energetic"! Maybe in a world of texting at the table and not interacting with your table mates."

  • "Service was slow and we went on a Tuesday. Ambiance was not great and it was really loud, we could not have a good conversation. Food was good, but pricey for the portions. Sushi was fresh but presentation was lacking. I guess we were expecting more from the Iron Chef. Dessert was amazing! I would definitely recommend this place to check out and try, but not a place I would frequent."

  • "The service and sushi bar folks are outstanding. The food was a bit of a disappointment. I am Japanese, so from home cooking etc, I'm biased on flavor profiles. I will give them credit for gorgeous plated presentations, all a bit unusual and skillfully done. But flavor wise was disappointed. The Wagu beef was outstanding though. Its costly, and for the $ I spent just not worth it."

  • "We had not been to Japonais for over a year and were very pleased on our return visit. The food is outstanding, especially the Waygu on the hot rock, self cooked at tableside. The sushi was wonderful, fresh and flavorful. The lower level along the river is the place to relax and enjoy the food and drink weather permitting. We are anxious to go back."

  • "I took my Japanese girlfriend here for a romantic dinner expecting a quiet evening of trying new things. We left staying within her comfort zone of eating primarily sushi, which by the way is possibly the freshest sushi in town. However, some dishes like the kakuni and wagyu beef carpaccio (despite the menu faux pas which translates as "Japanese beef" beef) were out of this world whereas some of the dishes were rather unimpressive (braised black cod: the same as my girlfriend's version at home and the karai chicken: just so-so). We came to be wowed by the presentation and ambiance, but left let down by the fusion. If you want to have a conversation, go elsewhere. If you're coming for Japanese-fusion, you'll be disappointed."

  • "The food was very good and the wait staff service superior...particularly Robert and also the wine steward. Only hiccup had to do with wanting to get a drink overlooking the river while our group assembled. I think no less than 4 hostess-type people asked us 7 or 8 times about moving to our table. I appreciate the fact that a business has to move diners along but they were so over the top pushy and with an unpleasant air of superiority that it got the evening off to a very poor start. I am sure that this restaurant is regularly filled but when you are with 3 other people and therefore prepared to spend meaningful amounts of money then I think I heightened level of professionalism can be expected."

  • "This used to be a crazy happening place. It is now very toned down now. Getting a seat outside on a Friday by the river is now an actual possibility (and they encourage it after dinner). The food is good to OK - the popcorn shrimp is amazing, the maki rolls are bland. We tried to order appetizers but were told that they serve over 1,000 people at a time and it was best to order everything at once so the "timing" would be right. It just wasn't that crowded (the basement level was empty) so there was no reason for this. To me, something was missing and they were not trying to fix it. It almost feels like they have lost their Mojo."

  • "We went to The Blue Room (I thought we were going to Japonais so was surprised when the menu read The Blue Room? But I guess that is what they call the Riverwalk area?) Saturday night. We were excited to sit along the river and enjoy good food. Good was certainly enjoyed, however, the service left much to be desired. There didn't seem to be a shortage on staff, however, we waited a good while before we were asked if we wanted a drink. Service seemed to get better as the night went on."

  • "Went this past weekend, and did the omakase tasting menu. The 7 courses ranged from excellent to good, exceptionally fresh, and unique. Service was solid and friendly, yet efficient. I definitely feel like we got a little more attention since we did order the omakase. The table next to us ordered a few sushi rolls, and left looking underwhelmed. Unless you're going to go all out and order the tasting menu, I would say to find a more affordable spot for sushi rolls. When waiting for a cab after, we got hounded by a full on crazy homeless woman right outside, as did other people going in and out. Fully realize this is out of the restaurant's control, but definitely marred the dinner, as valets and staff seemingly ignored the situation."

The space is still great, had good spicy tuna and taco apps, but friend tried the chicken noodle soup which she left behind as it was slimy. not how you want your soup. i was disappointed as we live in the neighborhood so was hoping it was going to be better, but underwhelmed. I'll give it another try though! "

  • "I can not begin to tell you how disappointed I was in this restaurant. I was visiting chicago on business and had heard good things about this place and decided to take a japanese client there. The service was terrible, the waiter brought us the wrong appetizer, the wrong drink and the food was at best, similar to grocery store quality sushi. In addition, the presentation looked like the dish had been dropped! My client an I were both disappointed! "
