With brand new enhancements, designed by the timeless Jeffrey Beers International, our restaurant features two distinct dining rooms and among the new and exciting additions to our dramatic yet classic 10,000 sq. ft. space are a sushi bar backed by an open kitchen where Chef Morimoto’s signature omakase menus are prepared and Shochu / Sake bar which features Chef Morimoto’s own line of shochu, sake and craft beers.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Sad to have the menu change since the shift to Morimoto. There are fewer special rolls, and the ones they have are less interesting, and the "The Rock" is no longer available. That said, what we had was very flavorful and beautifully presented."

  • "Japonais is a modern American fare. It is not really Japanese food. I have had better Japanese food. We ordered the chef's tasting menu. Tuna tartar was so-so. White fish Carpaccio, a vegetable dish with olive oil- anchovy sauce and mango pudding were the best item- world class, worth of Michelin rated restaurants and an amazing experience. Seafood soup was good but I have had similar or better in Spanish restaurants. Surf and turf items were good too but not extraordinary. I guess I am spoiled by eating in Zagat/ Michelin rated great restaurants all the time. Maître d’ and the seating staff were rude but the waiter was reasonably OK. He took too long to serve the wine, which came after the first course!Great presentation for all courses."

  • "Great experience, fantastic dishes, succulent sushi, and excellent sake to enjoy the evening. "

  • "Anniversary dinner, communicated when making reservations. Special dessert presented at end of meal, great touch. Tables are close together, we were a part of the conversation with two different parties seated next to us. Noise level a little high. Meal was great, quality and innovation excellent. Sushi was high quality (comparable to the best I've had, but not exceptional). A little pretentious. Pricing about where I would have expected for a special occasion restaurant. Craft cocktails very good and creative. Knowledgeable staff."

  • "Second visit to Japonais, and once again it was very good. The menu had changed since the last time we were all there. Everything was great this visit- ingredients all tasted fresh, good presentation, and delicious. We all agreed that we enjoyed our meal last time much more, and our favorite items were no longer available. Maki rolls were great but simple- last time we were wowed by the sushi and this time it was just really good. Service was attentive (weeknight at 6:30 reservation). Though I didn't feel rushed, a couple of us did get the impression that they did not really want us lingering around (as soon as the check came, two of us sat with empty and nearly empty water glasses while the other finished half of a glass of wine). • "This is now the second time I have gone with three people and both times all of us ordered Miso soup which came out at different times. I understand some comes with the entre and others ordered it separate but when we request they all come out together we are told no. That needs to change (that clearly is what the servers are trained to do so it should change from a management level)"

  • "I thought the place was perfect for an early dinner with my honey. The lamb shank wasn't that great, but he sea bass was. "

  • "We enjoyed all of the cold/ hot appetizers and the spicy tuna wrap was so fresh"

  • "Food was average and overpriced. Too loud! Wont come here again."

  • "Our visit to Japonais by Morimoto was unimpeachable! From the waterfall entrance to spacious but sociable seating, from cocktails and appetizers through entrees - and every service person who touched us along the way - the service was beautifully symphonic - nothing I could offer could make our visit better. At the strangely vaunted Blackbird, our reservations were delayed half an hour, our service was rushed, and our food was "just fine for the price." Compare to J by M, a plush dining experience worth every penny we paid, making Blackbird seem overpriced and Japonais a fabulous bargain. It somehow did not pluck that very last heart string but was still a fantastic experience for a sociable, single, or romantic outing."

  • "The drinks and food are a bit pricey. Probably not unusual for Chicago, though. This was my 4th or 5th time dining here. The food has always been very good. Better than good but less than excellent. The atmosphere is great and the service has always been top notch. I've never regretted dining here."

  • "Great food, awesome outstanding presentation. Service was off tonight. We lost our server a couple of times for more than 15 min."

  • "I love sushi and Japonais will now be my go to spot. The freshest I have had in a really long time, especially in Chicago The presentation of some of the dishes we had was spectacular....toro tartare and pork dumplings It's not cheap, but most good sushi isn't."

  • "This was my first non-TV experience with Chef Morimoto's food and it was one of my top-5 dinning experiences in my life. No joke. The white fish carpaccio was ridiculous!!!! Also, the bar has a brilliant Japanese single-malt whiskey selection."

  • "From the moment my car was valet-parked, and I was greeted by the friendly hostess and bar staff - it was an unmatched experience. We shared a variety of appetizers and entrees tapas-style, and they were all outstanding in presentation and flavor. Favorite picks: wagyu carpaccio, hamachi caesar, hamachi bop, grilled sea bass, and the delicious selection of sorbets! Paired perfectly with nigorizake and iron goddess of mercy oolong tea. This was my first experience returning to Japnais after the Morimoto rebranding. I came in knowing I'd be missing the "hot rock" but most definitely was impressed."

  • "Amazingly crafted cocktails. Creative & imaginative dishes. AMAZING sushi. We didn't try any of the entrees, mostly ordered appetizers and sushi combos, and everything was so phenomenal. Wish we didn't get so full so we could eat more! Not to mention the desserts (my favorite part!) Who knew tofu cheesecake with chocolate foam could be so delicious? (Yeah, it's THAT kind of restaurant.) I felt like a judge on Iron Chef America :) Bravo Morimoto!"

  • "Dined at Japonais this past Saturday night with a friend. First time visit as we are from out of town. The restaurant was packed and I mistakening made the reservation for Sunday instead of Saturday but they happily accommodated us at the Sushi Bar. No sooner did we sit down at our spot and there he stands, the Iron Chef Morimoto! What an awesome surprise! We ended up getting to meet him and had a photo opportunity as well as watch him oversee the sushi chefs all thorough our dinner. The wait staff and service was impeccable and the food just amazing. We tried several dishes from the menu and all very beautifully plated and tasted fantastic!"

  • "This is the second time we've been. We went for our anniversary and everything was amazing. Chef Morimoto's cuisine is superb. I highly recommend Japonais by Morimoto as the best restaurant in Chicago! An absolute must for every foodie."

  • "Food was AMAZING!! Our server was very attentive and knowledgable. We were seated by the hostess station/entrance area and was very distracting and very noisy! If we go back I'd request seating in the back or further from where we were. Overall, loved it!!"

  • "My girlfriend just returned to the country after being on a month long vacation over seas. She wanted sushi and one place came to mind. Everything was tasty but even more importantly to us the service was phenomenal. What a great experience."

  • "The food Items were good. But the sushi was pretty bad. Stay away from traditional rolls"

  • "Drinks: vodka with white truffle and grapefruit (cannot recall name). Unique taste. The end note is of a wasabi bean. Though interesting this it is not one I would order in future nor recommend. The menu has decent wine and sake selections. I moved to a Tuscan wine. Appetizer: Toro Tartare & Karai King Crab - MUST!!! Both were excellent. The crab~Divine! Entrée: Duck away from the Duck, Duck, Duck. Though the duck is excellent, it is simply too much! Share the plate if you choose to order. I strayed from sushi/maki this evening and will ensure not to stray again. Reserve your carnivorous habits for a fine steak house. If you stay with the apps mentioned, honestly it's enough food to fill the appetite."

  • "The high prices here reflect the quality of the fish. If you are looking for sashimi presented in a traditional manner this is the place, especially in Chicago. If you are looking for creativity and complex flavors this is not the place. The bop was average. There are many people working here and yet I felt the service was somehow lacking. We had a reservation and still had to wait 15 to be seated. I would not return to eat here, there are tons of things to discover in the area."

  • "The sushi here was just plain old OKAY. Big name, but mediocre food."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Japonais this past weekend to celebrate my new job. The place is romantic and very relaxing. The staff is very friendly. We got seated right away and ordered drinks and appetizers. The pop corn shrimp done two ways was out of this world and the chicken noodle soup made us feel warm and cozy in the cold weather. My boyfriend ordered the filet (medium) and it was amazing! One of the top three that I've tasted in my entire life. I ordered the spicy yellow tail maki roll which was good. For desert, we ordered the mango pudding and the tofu cheesecake. The presentation is amazing! I wish there was more mango pudding but it kept me wanting for more. I will skip tofu cheesecake next time. Great experience overall!"

  • "I am an old school fan of the original Japonais, so the bar is HIGH for me. The renovation, however subtle, is nice. The menu is approachable, and most of the food we had was good, not great. The service was very off. Pace, interaction, attention, etc. If they don't tune that up, it isn't going to be a memorable experience for anyone. Seemed to transactional to me. Highlights were the toro tartare and the crab. Very disappointed in the flagship lobster. Will give it another try once the hype has waned."

  • "We enjoyed the signature cocktails before dinner. The chef's tasting menu was not only fantastic tasting but it was fun and interactive as well. The wine flight was paired extremely well, each course was like heaven in your mouth. The service was good and we had a very pleasant dinner. It was a bit noisy if you are looking for an intimate dinner. There were two families having dinner, each with several kids. The restaurant was very accommodating for the families and the kids were not an interruption or distraction. Overall a great dining experience."

  • "We had a lovely time at lunch. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and passionate about the food. We ate a soft shell crab roll, noodles with 3 types of mushrooms, duck fried rice, and Chef Morimoto's awesome chicken noodle soup. We rolled back to work but look forward to going back soon for an extravagant dinner!"

  • "Chef Morimoto knocked this one out of the ballpark. Everything from the great cocktails and service to the apps, sushi and unbelievably delish dessert. I will be back again and again. We started with the Kakuni which is a pork belly and the tuna pizza. We then had an assortment of Sushi and Maki rolls and finished with this chocolate dessert that was one of the most decadent things I have ever eaten. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "My husband and I went for a romantic weekend and decided to go to Japonais for dinner. We made reservations which was good, I would highly encourage otherwise you will be waiting for hours. The food was excellent, the gyoza dumplings were amazing. We were pleasantly surprised that Morimoto was actually there in the kitchen. Wish I could have gotten a picture but didn't want to be one of those guests."

  • "Went to Japonais for a birthday dinner, sat at the bar while waiting for our table (we got there early). Bar staff was extremely friendly and fun and took care of us with drinks and apps. Loved the popcorn shrimp and the Toro Tartare! We were then seated at an awkwardly small table in a weird section of the restaurant, when we asked to be moved they did so no problem and gave us a huge table so we could lounge on the booth side and it was great! We had the sea bass for dinner and it was amazing! While I'm not a chocolate fan, we had this excellent chocolate dessert! Hadn't been to Japonais in about 4 years, can't wait to go back again!"

  • "This sounds like a great idea. Japonais: amazing. Morimoto: Best. Iron Chef. Ever. What could go wrong? Apparently, a lot. Even if you had never been to the original Japonais, or if you didn't know that you should revere Morimoto, I think that you would still come away from this new hybrid disappointed in the average level of the food. I can't help but think that Morimoto planned the menu and put his name on it but has no idea just how awfully these dishes are being executed. There is a difference between delightfully seasoning a dish with more butter and salt than most can comprehend, as is the case in all great restaurants, and what's happening here. I'll save you and your date $180: cover a stick of butter in a pound of salt, and serve."

  • "This is a great remake of the old restaurant. I most ate sushi, and the toro tartar was great as an appetizer. I also had the hamachi tacos which were also great! It is on the expensive side, but we'll worth it."
