With brand new enhancements, designed by the timeless Jeffrey Beers International, our restaurant features two distinct dining rooms and among the new and exciting additions to our dramatic yet classic 10,000 sq. ft. space are a sushi bar backed by an open kitchen where Chef Morimoto’s signature omakase menus are prepared and Shochu / Sake bar which features Chef Morimoto’s own line of shochu,
sake and craft beers.

  • "Our experience at Japonais was outstanding! This was a new experience for my husband and I since we were not terribly familiar with this type of cuisine. Our waiter Nathan was very helpful and explained all our options to us and even made sure he served each course to us in the proper way. Very attentive! All in all it was a great experience."

  • "We live out of town so you know we have a large selection of restaurants when we come to Chicago. The fact that we selected Japonais for a special family dinner tells it all. Friends took us there last year and we were eager to return. Consistently excellent. Sea Bass, Cod, sushi, cocktails--all visually and appetizingly fresh, colorful and delicious. We will go back again--crazy? No, it's that good."

  • "... and good variety on the menu - loved the wagyu on the hot rock, etc. Would have enjoyed sitting outside by the river but had a choice of either a table blinded by the sun (7pm) or lounge type seating further in. The other ouside deck by the street was deserted (lot of traffic noise?) so we enjoyed eating inside. The staff where extremely accomodating as we wandered about deciding inside or outside! Once seated, Daniel did an outstanding job guiding us through the menu and excellent sake selections. Some reviews called Japonaise pretentious - absolutely not so. Classy, relaxed. We had a blast."

  • "Food was delicately prepared by various special methods although the taste of the food may not be exceptional. The braised pork appetizer was good as it not too greasy and the eel roll was good. I got the lamb and it was a bit tasteless with a salty sauce. However, it did not have the strong odor that normally comes with lamb meat, which is a plus. The sea bass was nice, but again a little under seasoned. The dish was beautifully presented nonetheless. We got air cheese cake and a chocolate dessert. Cheese cake was too light and chocolate dessert was too thick. But overall, the service was good and ambience was nice."

  • "Sadly, the food was not particularly creative; a re-run of tired Nobu dishes from 10 years ago. And it was far too pricey for quality and service received. And the wine list - like all too many restaurants these days - was another effort to extort the customer. Why should it be necessary to pay $65 for a bottle of modest wine I can buy retail for $15? Disappointing to say the least."

  • "The food was great but for the $ we spent expected stellar service & got nothing close. We got seated 1/2 hour after our res. with no apology, just "get a drink at the bar and we'll let you know when your table's ready." In my open table reservation I requested an outdoor table. We were seated indoors with no apology or acknowledgement of the outdoor request. Ordered a bottle of wine at the bar & had to ask several times for it once we were seated as we sat with empty wine glasses. Waitress had another large party so our table of two was neglected. She never checked back on us. Someone brought our sushi but no soy sauce & we had to wait a long time to catch anyone's eye to get some. Tried to get her & she barked "can you give me a minute?""

  • "TABLES: two person table with one person on banquet was very low. Table was just below chest and base of table left nowhere for your feet. SERVICE: started well and then we were missing on entrée and the service of getting second entree took over 25 mins. By the time the missing entree arrived the other person was finished with dinner. Waitress did not keep us in the loop or check on us during the 25 min wait. Ended up canceling entree a couple minutes before it arrived (just taking too long) and ended up at Sable to have the second dinner. CHECK: a round of drinks was on the house which was nice gesture but it didn't make up for the bad experience. BIRTHDAY: Was my birthday dinner and it was a total bummer"

  • "While I'm not a fan of sushi, I went with my brother and his girlfriend. I had only heard about the sushi at Japonais, but there is a surprisingly large selection of non-sushi items. The Iron Chef chicken noodle soup is Amazing! All of Morimoto's dishes have such complex and deep flavors. It is definitely worth a trip!"

  • "The food was wonderful and the decor was just as great. Perfect riverfront view for romantic sunsets. The only flaw I found with the restaurant was the lack of nonalcoholic drinks on the menu, but the great food made me forget all about that. I highly recommend every one try this spot at least once, Im hooked!!!"

  • "I ordered sushi at the sushi bar instead of dining at the table. While the sushi was of a very good quality and the service was impeccable, I can't give Japonais more than 2 stars. The first draw back is the level of the music, at 5pm was so loud that I had to ask the waiter to turn it down twice, I find that unacceptable for a restaurant that is attempting to position itself as once of the premier restaurants in the competitive food scene. While the sushi was of good quality, the pieces were extremely small; smaller in size than most of the other restaurants of the same caliber in town. I spent close to $100.00 for sashimi for one person and tea. I don't see how this restaurant is going to survive. I will not be going back."

  • "I was impressed with Japonais. We sat downstairs in the Blue Room, and were treated to a fantastic sunset with pleasant weather. The sashimi and rolls tasted fresh and complex. The bar features a nice cocktail list, but I was not impressed with the St. Thomas, which has ingredients that normally attract me. I was also a bit disappointed with the black cod, a dish that I order whenever I see it on a menu. Its preparation was similar to what I see often, but I did not care for the cut. Despite these reports, I would definitely recommend it to a friend. Well done, Morimoto."

  • "Hadn't been in quite a while and didn't know the menu had been redone. What a fortuitous change. The expanded menu was fantastic. The sushi of course was spectacular but we also tried the lamb shank which was melting off the bone, the miso cod which was like sweet butter and a few other new entrants and everything was terrific. So recommend. May be long in the tooth at this point but always worth revisiting."

  • "Best part was the bar experience. Stellar--Superb drinks, fresh ingredients, plus bar tender gave us a quick lesson on her magic ingredients. Really fun! Dinner was good, but I missed some of the old specials…spicy tuna tartare especially. The current version was not really interesting, and a bit cookie cutter. Shrimp appetizers, Tasmanian sashimi and rolls were very tasty, as were the tacos."

  • "The food was fantastic. It combined a lot of flavors that were different enough to be interesting but familiar enough to be comforting. The service, however, was atrocious. Our water glasses sat empty for long stretches, even after we asked to have them refilled. There was an hour gap b/t our sushi course and our entrees due to a kitchen error. The wrong side was brought with our entrees, and when we asked to just cancel the one we had ordered, it was "too late". They did bring us a dessert for our anniversary, even though we had declined dessert. But when the bill came, the dessert was on it (they took it off), we were charged for the more expensive, incorrect side, and there was no attempt to apologize for the long delay in our entrees."

  • "The food is amazing, the staff does their best to keep up, sometimes lagging when a large group dominates their time. They are VERY knowledgeable about both the food and drink menus. The outdoor areas are nice, the outdoor furniture upstairs is not well thought out (form over function) and can get uncomfortable. All in all I would go again and sit outside. (I prefer uncomfortable to loud, energetic is a misnomer)"

  • " Open Table is to blame here as well! A great food experience should not have to suffer this infernal idea that a place so very loud has to be suffered in order to enjoy some great food. It was impossible to have any conversation what so ever without bending across the table. Open Table contributes to this foolish notion by changing the word loud or nosy to "energetic"! Maybe in a world of texting at the table and not interacting with your table mates."

  • "I've been to Japonais several times, but this is the first time I've been since it's association with Morimoto (who I got to meet!). We dined downstairs outside at a table overlooking the river. They have a different menu than the main floor, but the food was great. The carrots/goat cheese/bacon dish was wonderful as well as the brussel sprout dish. The sushi was fresh and very good. We arrived about 5:45 and were seated immediately with reservations, but service was a bit slower than I would prefer; however the service staff was great. Drinks from the bar were very good, but I'd like to see a larger specialty cocktail menu than they had. We'll definitely be going back to try it again."

  • "Service was slow and we went on a Tuesday. Ambiance was not great and it was really loud, we could not have a good conversation. Food was good, but pricey for the portions. Sushi was fresh but presentation was lacking. I guess we were expecting more from the Iron Chef. Dessert was amazing! I would definitely recommend this place to check out and try, but not a place I would frequent."
