Had an enjoyable Omakase dinner
here. Fun to see what was presented to us since we did not do the ordering. Sad part is we were served our last dish and did not know it until we were done and was told that was your last course. It would have been nice to know up front that we were getting 5 courses and when the last one came to know it so not try and rush through it thinking something else was coming. Other than that we had an enjoyable dinner."

Getting someone to give us water
and the menu took quite a long time. Although when service finally got started it got better."
Dined on 2/23/2014
Nice place, great food. Just had
to wait a bit to be seated. Nice staff."
Dined on 2/23/2014
The food was well made, not the
best...but ok. We had three different servers, which was confusing. The first was unbelievably rude, she obviously disliked her job. The second was fine, normal level of interaction. The third was really nice and bubbly. We got lucky that the third was the one that stuck with us. The poor table beside us got the grinch... I felt really bad for them, you could tell she managed to ruin their meal. Try it out for a quick lunch, but find a better place for a date or a nice dinner."
Dined on 2/14/2014
Sushi and sashimi were very fresh.
After spilling a glass of sake, the waiter made amends in grand style. We had a very pleasant lunch."
Dined on 1/30/2014
The food was worse than mediocre.
The Spicy Tuna rolls at Albertson's have more flavor. The Yellowtail sashimi was very good but that and the sake were the only things worth commenting on. We were so frustrated to be stuck with such a huge bill after that meal, especially since we drove out from West LA for DineLA. The service was fine but please, hire a new sushi chef to design you some rolls with flavor! My tuna sashimi tasted a little fishy too- a major no-no! I don't consider myself a sushi snob but tempura and soy sauce can not cover up poor design with what was probably sub-par ingredients. I will never be back."
Dined on 1/21/2014
very stingy on the serving.
mediocre food. nothing to rave about this restaurant."
Dined on 1/18/2014
A nice little place with some
interesting house special rolls. No cocktails/wine or anything beyond beer and sake though. I think they were short staffed during our visit because the service was incredibly slow. Not a bad Japanese restaurant overall, but not really remarkable in any way either."
Dined on 1/5/2014
The restaurant was mostly empty,
but our reservation wasn't enough to get a table because other reservations were coming later ("we only reserve at the 30 minutes"). Put in the corner instead with food coming out in a trickle, with the hot dish arriving 20 minutes before the sushi."
Dined on 1/17/2014
I ordered the beef tataki, but I
felt that its quantity was really small. If it was a expensive part of the cow, I wouldn't have been able to tell. I'd rather it be chuck, but more, rather than any expensive type of meat. Overall the rolls were pretty good and the Yuzu Chicken was good, but I felt that they should label it as spicy or not spicy since my girlfriend doesn't eat spicy food. Also there's a lot of lemon added to every dish."

high end priced sushi for average
flavors. bought a travelzoo voucher for omakase for 2. our party of 4 ordered extra food. no one was impressed with food quality. service was excellent, however. sorry. can't recommend this place to others."
Dined on 12/27/2013
Always great food an service. We
are long time repeat customers."
Dined on 12/26/2013
The food, especially the sushi, is
very good. No complaints there. It's the service that leaves a little to be desired. Sure, the people are nice, and attentive, but they seem not to communicate with each other very well. We've had our order taken twice, drink orders asked for with drinks freshly on the table, etc. We typically order sushi, a bento for the girl, and when other folks are along, an entree or two. While it isn't super-common for sushi restaurants to time delivery of food tightly, the pacing of delivery is strange. No two things arrive at the same time, even entrees. I still love this place. Just don't ask for anything complicated. Or if you're into sushi, sit at the bar where you can speak directly to the chef."

We happened to find this
restaurant through a deal from Travelzoo. The food was excellent! We couldn't get enough of the garlic edamame or the southwest roll! Service was great and it was a perfect location to go to the Ice House afterward. We would definitely return!"

Had great lunch specials and ended
up leaving with a really reasonable tab!"
Dined on 7/25/2013
It had been a while since I had
dined at Japon Bistro. Recently remodeled, looks great. Greeted personally by the owner. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meal. We all ordered seafood salads and rolls. However, the table next to us ordered the Tempura Lunch and it really looked amazing. Next Time!"
Dined on 10/2/2013
The food was ok, went on TravelZoo
special. A word of advice; clean the sushi bar-it was so dusty and grimy it was embarrassing."
Dined on 9/20/2013
Had the travelzoo voucher, really
great deal. Enjoyed dinner and the different dishes. Nice environment, service was ok, could have been better. One sushi roll took forever to come, had to ask for wasabi. Food was good!"
Dined on 9/9/2013
High quality fish with
correspondingly high prices. No cheap rolls here, but quality sashimi if that's what you're looking for. Portions are small but tasty."
Dined on 7/26/2013
The staff here was great! Very
attentive and courteous! The food was awesome! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!"
Dined on 7/19/2013
This was definitely a great deal,
I'd recommend the DineLA lunch menu to anyone with an appetite. You get a lot of food, and though it wasn't particularly anything "special," the food was tasty and fresh. It seems that most of the waitstaff was new because no one could answer any questions without going back and forth to "check on that." Though the entire waitstaff was polite and charming, it took a long time for our orders to be taken, and to get our drinks... and then eventually the food. Also, we were told that the sushi menu came with certain types of fish which was not the case when the sushi was actually served. The presentation was excellent, the quality was good, and the service was fair. You won't be impressed or disappointed."
Dined on 7/18/2013
We ordered the daily fish special
and choked on bones. The white fish had tons of bones and it was inedible to me because of this issue. We told the waitress and she said she'd tell the chef, but didn't offer me anything else to eat. My husband ate the whole fish and was constantly pulling bones out of his mouth. Very dangerous!"

Japon Bistro has a huge selection
of Sake. Our favorite is the seasonal sake flight, providing a wonderful opportunity to taste 3 sake samples side by side. The salmon skin salad is a real green salad that is jam packed with salmon skin. The seared scallop appetizer is to die for. This is a slightly off the beaten path delight."

Helpful, honest servers. Wonderful
food. Will definitely go back again. Thank you!"
Dined on 6/19/2013
Staffs greet you once you open the
entry door with a friendly smiles and very attentive through out my dining period."
Dined on 6/15/2013
They have really fantastic sushi -
fresh and delicious, and beautifully prepared. They also have amazing sake - seasonal sake samplers that change every season are a wonderful compliment to their food. And every now and again, sake pairing dinners (like a wine pairing dinner) where you learn all about sake and how it pairs with foods - mostly with sushi and Japanese dishes, but also with other dishes (Claude Beltran of neighboring restaurant, Noir, has been a guest chef several times). Service here is always friendly, and they really like to get to know their customers, so if you come regularly they will address you by name (a nice touch). Probably our favorite restaurant in Pasadena at this point!"
Dined on 11/10/2012
Owner and waitresses were super
friendly with excellent service. Unfortunately, I cannot give a good score on food though. Food was well-prepared, but they got something missing compared to other Japanese restaurant. Perhaps they focused too much on fusion but lost the essence of Japanese authentic taste. I'd rather not go there unless they seriously consider changing menu or chef."
Dined on 4/28/2013
Really good neighborhood sushi
restaurant with really helpful sushi chefs and pleasant service. Great selection of saki. Close to the Boston Court theater. Reasonable prices and good selection."

We've been wanting to visit Japon
Bistro but, finally came with some friends last weekend. The service was very good and attentive, almost to the point of annoyance as one person will ask about refiling our ice tea about three minutes after another person did just that. I guess I prefer this as oppose to having our server disappear for like our last dinner at Mccormick and Schmidts. The food just didn't blow us away. My wife ordered salmon teriyaki and she got this tiny piece of salmon on a big plate with three florets of broccoli and three little chunks of carrot. For $15, it wasn't worth it. For less than $15, we use to get a two item combo at Zono Sushi down the street. Too bad Zono has closed for good. We prefer Go Sushi over this place"

Pasadena Restaurant Week Menu was
a fantastic deal!"
Dined on 4/22/2013
Food was outstanding, however the
service was despicable. We went to lunch for Restaurant Week and I believe our server was the manager, or at least the lead server for that shift. He paid no attention, forgot things, and was generally rude. There was a sweet guy who was brand new and he will be a great asset to the restaurant. Not sure we will be back. And I will"
Dined on 4/22/2013
We have been to Japon Bistro
several times and have enjoyed their food each time. We enjoyed the Pasadena Restaurant Week menu that evening. Staff is always friendly here."
Dined on 4/21/2013
I went to Japon Bistro w/ a group
of friends for the 1st time for Pasadena Restaurant Week. For a place that was recommended by Zagat in the past, it wasn't very crowded. I ordered from the prix fixe menu that included 2 appetizers, an entree & dessert. I got the Koji's tower (kind of like a mini tostada) & the crab cakes as appetizers. It wasn't as much food as some of the other appetizer choices. I followed that up w/ a sushi / sashimi platter & mochi ice cream. It was a nice meal; I'd consider going back again. I appreciated it when I was told I could park at International Golf for free since it's out of business."

Spectacular, lovely food and
drink. Always our favorite place for a date night! Always making us feel welcome!!"
Dined on 4/19/2013
Only place i've been to with Sake
sampler, and believe me unless your a sake Fan, you'll be tanked after those 3. 2 people, well fed 40$/head (with tip), Dinner. Oh, and they are SUPER friendly and informative about everything, especially the Sake, which is their specialty."
Dined on 4/5/2013
I'm not sure what happened. I like
this place A LOT. But the other night service was totally off: waiter was new, but still, can I order my drink? Can you not be so awkward during every conversational exchange? Can I have some silver ware or sushi dishes or do I have to walk around and get them myself? How could he miss that in a place that is so accustomed to detail? Speaking of detail whats up with the revamped chicken teriyaki: bland wedding chicken at best. Lastly, it took 30 min to tell me they were out of sea bream, which they weren't cause they offered it to the table nearby. Can't you just say you forgot instead of lying? I want to go back again just to make sure that I had a one off night but I dunno..."
