Diner Reviews
  • "This Sushi restaurant is upscale in both prices and quality of product served since it caters to Japanese guests staying at the Hyatt Honolulu. It has terrific food and good service. I always gravitate to the sushi bar where I often meet other single guests at the hotel and can engage in interesting conversations. The scorched Hamachi is one of my favorites."

  • "Japango has some great food and great service. This was the first place we went to the night we landed after we got here form japan. The fish entres and apps were good. We also ordered the coconut creme brûlée was amazing."

  • "Truly the best dinner you can get in Hawaii. The chef, Jon Matsubara refined his craft in New York under Jean George and it shows. His expertise in the kitchen shines through. We had a special chef's tasting menu made especially of us. The taste of all the dishes were sublime. The dishes were original and executed to perfection! I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants top quality dishes."

  • "Great food, service and ambiance. Don't forget to get the Scallop Butter Yaki. Melts in your mouth!!! Went with a group of 8. Perfect setting for a larger group. We will be back!"

  • "This place MADE SURE as a local couple we were treated as if we were 1st time diners. The ambiance was PERFECT & the service was EXQUISITE."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the $49 tasting menu and hope that you continue to serve this. We've been to others and yours is by far the best for taste and value. Even the complimentary glass of wine was good!"

  • "My husband and I decided to go to Japengo, because first of all, it was our Anniversary, but mostly because we knew of chef Jon from two other outstanding restaurants. Well, we were treated like royalty the minute we got seated, and chef Jon did a "personalized" menu just for us with the best fresh sushi, and seafood that I have had in years, not to mention this yummy coconut dessert. From the bus help, server, manager to the kitchen, this was a fabulous dinner and we will go back again as soon as we can!"

  • "We were celebrating Girls' Day, and decided to try Japengo. We generally avoid going into Waikiki because of the traffic, but since the newspaper write-up on the restaurant was enticing, we went there. A Kama'aina Tasting Menu was offered and it was very well put together. The hamachi appetizer was fresh and tasty, the seafood cioppino was excellent; but the filet mignon was a tad tough (which surprised me, since it was a filet), and I opted to take home the flourless chocolate bar since it looked heavy, although I did partake of the surrounding strawberries and cream and gelato----they were marvelous. The waiters were very attentive and non-intrusive. Noise level was moderate. All in all, it was a memorable dinner....5 stars."

  • "Japengo has great food and service. Super facility for groups of 8-12. They have nice fixed meni options which makes a group order pretty easy. If you are in Honolulu for business, take your group there!"

  • "Difinitely would go back. Excellent food. Went back again before I left vacation."

  • "First of all, it's impossible to find tucked into a far corner of the third floor. The hostesses at the door are very nice, but the decor is cold and feels dated, the menu is impossible to understand and the prices go from reasonable for the appetizers to $49 a la carte for Singaporean chili crab. There were some good looking entree plates passing by our table, but they seemed very expensive for the ambience of the room. The service was spotty and confusing. The whole place seems tacky and in a time warp."

  • "We were very pleased at the high quality of sushi and japanese fusion food served at Japengo's. We loved everything we ordered. Not cheap but excellent food. We sat at the sushi bar and during happy hour their prices on selected dishes are half the normal price. A good deal for sure."

  • "Service was a little slow for us. First course came and we had to wait awhile for the second course. The table next to us came in later, got their first course and the second course came when we got ours. Service was much faster for them."

  • "This dining experience DID NOT live up to the hype and my expectations. We paid $75 for a four course meal and decided to splurge on a $140 bottle of wine for a "romantic" Valentine's Day dinner. We were not through our appetizer before we heard dishes and silverware being slammed around in the kitchen. The live guitar player couldn't drown out the noise! The menu was not worth the cost. The best part of the night was the wine and my date doing his best to stay positive despite the offensive ambience. This restaurant will not have my business again."

  • "The chef put together an amazing four-course meal for Valentine's dinner. Each course was exquisitely balanced in flavors and textures, and appealed to a wife range of tastes and pallets. The staff was professional but warm as well, and the location and decode was inviting and intimate."

  • "The food was awesome and so was the service, very friendly and attentive. Love how there is a tasting menu helps you decide real easy. The desserts are to die for I tried everyone on my stay. Definitely coming back and recommending to friends and family."

  • "Their tasting menu and 4 course meals are worth it. The service was great. Our waiter, Arnold was very attentive and timed the food appropriately. It's nice place for a low key date as well a groups. Overall, it is worth trying."

  • "Came here with a group of foodie friends from the mainland. Nice, spacious, modern interior. Limited and pricey food and drinks menu but to be fair its Waikiki and prices are on par with restaurants that are similar. Problem is the menu items are very similar to what you can get somewhere else, but other places do it better for the same or less cost than Japengo. Staff were efficient but there was a gentleman (I think a manager?)who would sneak up to random members of our party and other parties to encourage them to order certain things on the menu...it was a bit intrusive nearing pushy. Overall it wasn't a bad experience, but nothing that really stands out and we left feeling a bit let down."

  • "Really enjoyed and nice casual place for dinner. Very relaxed. Believe it or not... try the Fried Chicken! It was theold chef's grandmother's recipe -- Fried Chicken with an Asian twist."

  • "This review is based off of the New Years set three course meal and should be only taken as a sample of what the restaurant can do. The food was very well done. Tuna sashimi with guacamole was refreshing and new, and the steak melted into perfection. However, the price of two meals was three hundred bucks with out tip. The meal included only one drink, sparkling champagne, and water thereafter. Long story short - the chefs are artists, but the management are thieves. The food is not worth the price."

  • "For a Christmas dinner, it fell a bit short. 4 pieces of sushi, half a lobster tail and half a steak for $100 (with dessert). Would definitely pass next year."

  • "I am always a little weary of holiday set menus, but our experience at Japengo made me a believer! Each course was delightfully prepared, fresh to death, and utterly scrumptious. The sushi course was light and fresh while the steak course was hearty and well-cooked. What's more is that one member of my party even had a lobster allergy and the staff and chef de cuisine was more than accommodating. Well done! Well done."

  • "We hosted our annual Christmas Party for a party of 9 in one of the private rooms ( arranged by Poletti) and it was a HUGE success. We are not an easy group to serve, as we needed multiple separate checks, with some people ordering a full course menu, and others ordering ala carte. Pam & Arnold managed to keep everything flowing in a great succession of courses for everyone. Chef John Matsubara is a great addition to this restaurant , and we were very happy to sample his Restaurant Week Menu at $55 per person which was outstanding! We are so impressed , we are going to return for the special New years Eve menu!"

  • "This was our first time dining at this restaurant and we were very impressed with the quality of the food and the service. We like to say that our server was very helpful with helping us with the menu and our choice of selections. I wish I could remember the young lady's name sorry for that. But she was really nice and helpful."

  • "Excellent!! We went for restaurant week and was surprised that after eating out for the past 5 nights at restaurant week we thoroughly enjoyed Japengo the best. The service was excellent and the food was out of this world. I think this is my new favorite spot for special occasions. Loved the whole restaurant week menu at Japengo. We will definitely return. It was the first time I used open table to book my reservation and it was so easy."

  • "Ordered several different dishes including sushi. One item came with unlimited rice white or brown. They did not have brown rice available so they had to get it from another restaurant which took 40 mins and all the food was eaten. The sushi was ok but the slices were cut too large and did not start together."

  • "Reviewed this restaurant on yelp. Came here to enjoy the menu for rest week. Absolutely enjoyable! The food, service, and ambience was top notch. Love it!!!"

  • "Food was good but it won't be enough to make me come back. Although the decor is tastefully decorated, it lacks of certain finesse. Too commercial for my taste, huge dining space and it gets loud when filling up. Doesn't feel too upscale to me but the prices is pretty much high end. Not a good value."

  • "Everything about the restaurant is very polished. There were quiet couples celebrating and some private groups having a good time. Our waitress was just the right amount of attentive and the service was stellar overall. Food was delicious and came out at the right pace. We chose to split a set meal and added on an appetizer and it was just the right amount. Unlike some fancy establishments that charge high prices, I feel that the prices are pretty reasonable and are definitely worth it for the food quality and atmosphere."

  • "We had an enjoyable meal. bit were very distracted by the jarring music. After our request for a change of music, the volume was turned down, but the canned rhythms persisted. We would have preferred Hawaiian or Japanese music or something calm. We have eaten at Japengo before, but now we hesitate to go back."
